Rotation Free FPL Assets Based on Previous Season Minutes

Hello everyone! Gameweek 1 is around the corner, and many FPL managers have already started planning and building their teams for the 2022/23 season. This will be a slightly different year in terms of schedule because of the FIFA World Cup being played out in November & December this year. Plus, introducing five substitutions will make this season challenging for FPL managers.  In this blog, we’ll look at rotation free FPL assets with the most minutes and starts from last season, covering all positions, i.e. goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards across all Premier League teams.

Interestingly, Manchester United’s David De Gea and Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris were the only two goalkeepers among the top 6 teams who played every minute (3420) last season. Ederson and Fabianski were next, having played 37 out of 38 games and only missing out on one occasion. Liverpool’s Alisson was 4th with 36 appearances as he missed out on two fixtures because of a hamstring injury. Ramsdale and Mendy were tied for the bottom spot among the top 6 teams’ goalkeeper options. Ramsdale only made his FPL debut in GW4 and became a mainstay in the Arsenal backline. Mendy also made 34 appearances playing a total of 3060 mins for Chelsea in the 2021/22 season.

Talking about budget options, Brighton’s number one keeper, Robert Sanchez, who is also the most owned 4.5m option right now, missed out on one game as he was sent off against Newcastle and clocked 3329 minutes on the pitch. Jose Sa, who could be another potential FPL option this year, had an impressive season with Wolves and just finished behind Sanchez. He was rested against Norwich City and got substituted at half-time in the season’s final game against Liverpool because of a knee issue. Pope, a Newcastle player for the 2022/23 season, played for Burnley last season, featuring 36 games.

Goalkeepers suffered a fair amount of injuries in the 2021/22 season. Guaita and Dubravka only played 30 and 26 games, respectively. The former still looks to be Palace’s number one choice in goal. Brentford’s David Raya, who is already the 5th most owned keeper for the new season, could only manage 24 appearances after suffering a left knee injury that ruled him out for four months. With Thomas Strakosha signing for Brentford on a free transfer from Lazio, it will be interesting to see if Raya can retain that number 1 spot. Strakosha, who started 23 games for Lazio in Serie A last season, will compete with David Raya. He has been Brentford’s first choice since 2019.

Rotation Free FPL Assets ~ Meslier

Other options which may not be very popular this season include Meslier from Leeds United, who played 38 games but failed to complete the full 90 minutes in Gameweek 30 against Wolves as he was substituted after suffering a hip contusion. Kasper Schmeichel was right behind, playing 37 games. Surprisingly, he was dropped in Gameweek 37, ending an impressive run of 150 consecutive starts to give some game time to Danny Ward, who had been Leicester’s number two goalkeeper. Everton narrowly missed relegation, and their goalkeeper Jordan Pickford came in next, playing 35 games and a total of 3150 minutes last season.

Among newly promoted teams, Mark Travers from Bournemouth played out the majority of the Championship games for his team. He finished with 45 appearances accumulating 4050 minutes of playing time. Fulham’s Marek Rodák comes in next, playing 33 games in the Championship last season, but Leno is rumored to move to Fulham which would make him second choice. Nottingham Forest’s new loan signing, Dean Henderson, looks to be their number one choice and could be an alternative in the 4.5m price category. He didn’t feature for Man Utd last season, but he could do well with Forest.

Defenders with the most minutes and games last season

Defenders with most minutes and games last season
Stats via FFFix

Among the top 6 teams, Cancelo made an impressive 36 starts and finished the season with 3328 minutes, most by a ‘top 6 team defender’. Laporte was ranked 8th among the top 6 team defenders for minutes last season and came in second for Man City. He finished the season with 2834 minutes and 33 starts. Ruben Dias, who made 31 appearances last season, still looks to be the first CB option at Man City. Stones, who could share some game time with Laporte, especially if the latter is not fit to start this season, only managed 14 starts after having a great 2020/21 season. Nathan Ake, who only played 920 minutes, could also become the first choice left back with Cancelo playing on the right. An alternative could also be Cancelo shifting to the left with Walker, who got 20 starts last season(1755 minutes), playing on the right.

Rotation Free FPL Assets ~ Trent Alexander Arnold

The mighty Trent Alexander-Arnold was ranked 7th among the top 6 team’s defenders with 32 appearances. He was behind Van Dijk among Liverpool defenders and played a total of 2854 minutes for the Reds in the PL. Matip was relatively consistent for Liverpool and featured in 31 games last season. Another explosive option from Liverpool was Andrew Robertson, who played 29 games (2541 mins). He missed out because of injury concerns and a periodical rest given by Klopp.

Thiago Silva from Chelsea was the most consistent CB for the Blues as he started 28 games and made another four appearances off the bench. He finished the season with 2651 minutes on the pitch, which was the most by a Chelsea defender after Rudiger, who left the club on a free transfer to Real Madrid. It was not the same story for attacking wing-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell. James managed 26 appearances for Chelsea playing a total of 1865 mins (only 25th among the top 6 club defenders). Chilwell, on the other hand, suffered a horrific ACL injury that limited him to only seven starts in the Premier League last season.

Tottenham’s wing-backs Emerson Royal and Reguilon struggled to get consistent game time. They finished way behind with 2289 and 1922 minutes, respectively. There could be a lot of competition in the Tottenham ranks as their new signing Ivan Persic could play in a wing-back role. Last season playing for Inter Milan in Serie A, he started 35 games and lasted 2843 minutes on the pitch. There are doubts about his current physical state and whether he will become prone to early subs considering the five substitutions rule, but he is one to look out for. Lenglet has also signed for them; he made 21 appearances in La Liga for Barcelona but mostly were sub appearances.

Rotation Free FPL Assets ~ Gabriel

Arsenal’s Ben White made 32 starts and played a total of 2880 mins for the Gunners. His CB partner Gabriel led the ranks with 35 starts and was ranked 3rd among all ‘top 6 club defenders’ for minutes played. Left-back Tierney had another injury-hit season racking up only 22 starts. Right-sided defender Tomiyasu who has become quite a popular FPL pick for the 2022/23 season, finished with 21 appearances and 1682 minutes on the pitch.

Dawson clocked the most minutes by a West Ham defender in all 34 games. All this could change with West Ham’s new signing, Nayef Aguerd, who started 31 games for Rennes in Ligue 1. Attacking defenders Cresswell and Coufal could only manage 31 and 28 starts in the PL for the Hammers.

Manchester United defenders Maguire and Lindelof ranked highest among United defenders for starts and minutes on the pitch. Other options like Varane, Dalot, Wan Bissaka, Telles, and Shaw lacked consistency and fitness. None of them reached the 25 games mark for the 2022/23 season.

Rotation Free FPL Assets ~ Matty Cash

No defender managed to play every minute of the 2021/22 campaign, but a couple outside the ‘traditional six clubs’ came close. Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash missed 40 minutes of Premier League action all season. In comparison, Wolves defender Conor Coady missed 57 minutes of action. They were the only defenders to start all 38 Premier League games last season. Other budget options like Jansson, Mitchell, Guehi and Mings played most of the season, all clocking more than 3000 minutes.

With Zinchenko joining Arsenal this summer, there are rumours about Marc Cucurella joining Man City from Brighton. He was pretty consistent and was ranked among the top 10 defenders for most minutes played in the 21/22 season. Another potential FPL option is Lewis Dunk, who is quite attacking and finished 3rd highest for minutes played among Brighton defenders behind Cucurella and Veltman.

Newcastle’s fullbacks, Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett (both 5m), were on set-pieces last season. Target was top among Newcastle defenders for minutes played. In contrast, Trippier, who was signed in the January transfer window, got injured a lot and only featured for 429 mins.

Rotation Free FPL Assets ~ Ait Nouri

Wolves attacking wing-back Ait-Nouri (4.5m), who could be a potential option, had 20 starts to his name, clocking 1827 minutes last season. Suppose Semedo remains unfit at the start of the season. In that case, Jonny (4.5m) could come into play, having only played 1000 minutes last season.

There could be some merit in going for differentials like Lucas Digne, who made 29 starts and managed close to 2500 mins on the pitch. Even the Leicester City defence could be settled this season without European commitments. Last season Soyuncu clocked in the most minutes (2497), followed by Castagne (2124) and Amartey (2118). Attacking options Justin and Pereira both played less than 1000 minutes because of recurring injuries but could see a sharp increase in game time if they can stay fit this season.

There are few viable FPL defender options from promoted teams, given that there are some interesting known budget names from better clubs. Nottingham Forest’s new signing Neco Williams (4m) could be a great budget enabler. He was on loan to Fulham last season and made 14 starts for them.

Midfielders with the most minutes and games last season

Midfielders with most minutes and games last season
Stats via FFFix

The only player to feature in all 38 games from the top 6 clubs was Bukayo Saka, who clocked in close to 3000 minutes last season. The following best was Bruno Fernandes for Man Utd, who featured in 36 games but played more minutes than Saka (3118).

David Moyes didn’t make many changes in attack, and Bowen was next, making 35 starts for the Hammers. Despite West Ham’s European commitments, he had a great season and finished with almost 3000 minutes on the pitch. 5.5 Million West Ham midfielder, Fornals also made 36 appearances and played 2799 minutes.

Tireless midfielders Odegaard and Bernardo Silva were in the top 6 for minutes played among the premium teams.

Benrahma was another cheap midfielder option that caught a lot of attention early in the season. He finished the season with 27 starts and 32 appearances, playing over 2000 minutes for West Ham.

Man City midfielders Foden and Mahrez(both 8m this season) made 28 appearances each. Foden started 24 of those fixtures, whereas Mahrez only got 15 starts and was preferred in other competitions. With Sterling and Jesus gone, one can expect Mahrez to start more regularly and improve on those minutes stats. The same can’t be said about Foden, as his position remains a bit unknown, especially with the likes of Grealish and Haaland on the team.

Liverpool had a few decent midfielders in Diogo Jota (who is forward this season) and Luiz Diaz, who started well. Jota played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s front three, starting 27 games with an additional seven appearances off the bench. He played 2372 minutes, and seeing these numbers shows that he was substituted quite often, averaging only 68 minutes per appearance. Liverpool signed Diaz in January, and he fit right in, making 15 appearances out of which 13 were starts.

In the mid-range price category, Mount (8m this year) made 32 appearances (27 starts) for Chelsea. He completed just a little less than 2500 mins on the pitch, making him a decent option in that price range. Other Chelsea options Ziyech and Pulisic, struggled with injuries. When fit, they were not regulars in Tuchel’s setup as both only made 23 and 22 appearances respectively for the Blues, out of which nine were from the bench.

Tottenham attacker Kulusevki who has received a significant price rise this year, was brilliant for Tottenham. Despite signing in the January transfer window, Kulusevski played the majority of games making 22 appearances and finishing the season with 1265 minutes. Arsenal’s other budget midfield options saw rotation as Emile Smith Rowe and Martinelli were rotated with one another. Smith Rowe made 33 appearances, out of which 12 were from the bench. In contrast, Martinelli featured in the league 29 times, and 8 of those were from the bench.

Man Utd players had a season to forget and their midfield options, Sancho and Rashford, failed to create any significant impact. Sancho was more regular among the two starting 20 times and making nine more appearances off the bench. Rashford struggled to cement a starting place, and though he featured 25 times in the PL, 12 of those appearances were from the bench.

Among the premium options, Both Son & Salah had an excellent season and made 35 appearances in the Premier League last season. Interesting, Son played a little more than 3000 mins, whereas Salah clocked 2761 mins for the Reds. KDB was the 4th highest scoring midfielder in FPL last year but started only 25 games under Pep. He averaged around 70 mins for his total 30 appearances in the league, which was relatively less for an elite FPL midfielder. Sterling was a similar story as he also just started 23 games, making 30 appearances. His minutes were identical to that of KDB. This season could be a different story as he has signed for Chelsea and is expected to play more regularly under Thomas Tuchel.

Rotation Free FPL Assets ~ Son

Relevant midfield options from other teams include Ward Prowse from Southampton, who was a consistent starter for the Saints and started 36 matches, completing 3217 minutes on the pitch. Trossard from Brighton also had a consistent season with 34 appearances and clocking in 3210 minutes on the pitch. Maddison had probably his best season for Leicester as he made 28 starts and a total of 35 appearances and gave a lot of value to its FPL owners. Barnes wasn’t far behind with 24 starts and 32 appearances overall. January signings Eriksen, Coutinho, and Guimaraes all played well and finished the season with appearances in double figures. The latter two crossed 1000 minutes for the season and could be viable FPL options at some stage this season.

There are some exciting options from promoted teams worth mentioning here. Bournemouth has a couple of budget players in Billing and Anthony. Billing made 40 appearances resulting in 3310 minutes on the pitch in the Championship last year. Anthony was their breakout star finishing with 45 appearances and 3264 minutes on the pitch. Fulham has Harry Wilson, who started 39 games for them, playing for 3486 minutes. Fulham could also have a very cheap playing option in Andreas Pereira (4.5m). He made 13 appearances for Flamengo and played for only 791 minutes in the Serie A.

Forwards with the most minutes and games last season

Forwards with the most minutes and games last season
Stats via FFFix

Forwards had a tough FPL season last year, and choosing a consistent forward was challenging for all FPL managers. Kane was the only forward among the top 6 teams who crossed 3000 minutes on the pitch. He finished the season with 37 appearances (36 starts) and 3232 minutes played. Antonio was the next most consistent player racking up 34 starts and making another two appearances from the bench. He finished the season strongly with 2975 minutes on the pitch, his most consistent season in the PL to date. Man Utd’s Ronaldo, rumoured to leave the club, started 27 games and clocked close to 2500 minutes on the pitch.

Nketiah was a surprising name that cropped up last season. With Aubameyang leaving in January and Lacazette no more being the first choice, Nketiah ended the season very strongly with 13 starts and a total of 21 appearances. Jesus played for Man City last season and made 21 starts for the Cityzens. He has moved to Arsenal this summer and should get more game time under his new boss Mikel Arteta.

One of the most significant transfer moves of the summer has been Haaland joining Man City. City will now be playing with a proper no9 this season. Last season, he made 24 appearances for Dortmund, out of which 21 were starts. He missed a total of 10 games due to injury. It will be fascinating to see how he links up with other City attackers and how Pep uses him in the Man City setup. We also have Darwin Nunez, who joined Liverpool for the 2022/23 season, talking about new signings. He featured in 28 games for Benfica, completing 2000+ minutes on the pitch.

Rotation Free FPL Assets ~ Ollie Watkins

Among options other than the top 6 teams, Watkins was the standout pick in terms of consistent game time as he finished the season with 33 starts and 2955 minutes. Brentford striker Toney was close behind with 32 starts. Wolves struggled a lot to score goals last season, and it is no surprise that Jimenez has not been the same player since his severe head injury. He did manage to start 30 games for Wolves last season but was not very effective. Everton had an abysmal season, and they would have gone down if not for Richarlison scoring those crucial goals. He did well for Everton, making 30 appearances (28 starts) and managing 2526 minutes on the pitch. This year he has switched teams and now plays for Tottenham. We are yet to see how his game time gets affected, but there are chances that he might see limited minutes with Tottenham duo Son and Kane in play.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy was the 3rd highest scoring forward behind Kane and Ronaldo but could only manage 25 appearances (20 starts) and a total of 1805 minutes on the pitch. Aston Villa striker Danny Ings had a tough season as he only started 22 games and eight appearances from the bench. There are rumours that he might leave the club this season.

Crystal Palace strikers Edouard and Mateta shared minutes on the pitch, and both could only manage 18 and 13 starts, respectively. Leicester forwards Iheanacho and Daka had a similar story. They, too, could muster only 13 starts each and had to depend on bench appearances for most of the season.

Wilson, Calvert-Lewin, and Bamford all had injury-ridden seasons, and none of them could manage to start even half the games last season. Wilson got the most game time among the three with 16 starts and 1388 minutes on the pitch. Bamford was the worst of the lot and could only be fit enough in 9 games throughout the season for Leeds United.

Talking about promoted teams, we have Mitrovic from Fulham, who had an impressive goal-scoring season last year. He made 44 appearances and clocked 3836 minutes on the pitch. Dominic Solanke was Bournemouth’s star man, playing 46 games for them in the Championship, clocking an impressive 4000+ minutes for the 2021/22 season. Nottingham Forest’s new signing, Taiwo Awoniyi, started 29 games for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga and completed 2000+ on the pitch.
