Best Liverpool FPL Players | Liverpool FPL Preview | FPL Flynn

Hi all! I’m Flynn ( or @FPLflynn) and I’m your new Liverpool AllAboutFPL correspondent. This will be my 4th year playing FPL with a strong 20K finish last year. I’ll do my best to help you on both fronts Liverpool and FPL!

Liverpool were 2 games from winning every single major trophy to possibly win. Unfortunately, those 2 games didn’t go to plan but we still walk away with a historic season and statistically THE best season of all time.

Pre-Season has seen the largest shakeup in a few years with long-serving Sadio Mane leaving and Darwin Nunez joining to replace him for a large fee. I’ll do my best to break down and predict the upcoming season to hopefully give you an advantage over your league mates.

 Liverpool Fixtures

Liverpool Fixtures for the 2022/23 Season

From a fixtures standpoint, you couldn’t possibly ask for a better start. I think you’re making a massive mistake if you aren’t tripling up on LFC assets and they’re near enough ‘essential’ and I absolutely despise that word.

Come GW8 we’ve got a significantly worse run with Chelsea, Arsenal, and City in 4 gameweeks with FPL managers looking to wildcard around GW8 it might be wise dropping to a double over a triple up and attack some fixtures swings Leicester, etc but when It comes to the Liverpool’s and City’s of the world they are pretty much fixture proof and don’t matter as much as other teams especially when you have Mohamed Salah in your team.

Liverpool System/Formation and Key players focus:

Liverpool Squad depth and formation going into GW1 of 2022/23 season

In October 2015 Jurgen Klopp joined Liverpool after leaving Dortmund in the Summer and completely changed the dynamic of Liverpool football club following on for Brendan Rodgers. Klopp built up a successful trademark style of play winning 5 trophies at Dortmund. People have labelled the style the
‘Gegenpress‘ which has players playing incredibly high up the people and based on counter-pressing the second players lose the ball they chase (in the words of Pep Lijnders – Liverpool’s assistant coach) the ball down in patterns which are designed to cause problems for the opposition.

The base formation before joining Liverpool was the 4-2-3-1 but as Klopp first looked at the team he thought they’d be more suited to a untraditional 4-3-3 using the False 9 rather than the traditional centre-forward. The system was built around Roberto Firmino who joined 3 months before Klopp did and struggled to break into Brendan Rodger’s side. The £29 million man was an instant hit scoring 11 goals and assisting 11 in his debut season.

With the false 9 dropping deep to interlock the play it allows space in behind the defence for the wingers to exploit and oh they have exploited it. Klopp transformed players who were regarded as rather unsuccessful players and made them world beaters. Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane joined by Luis Diaz recently who all joined from their respective clubs went on a different level under Klopp in this system winning multiple individual awards and were key in the successful Premier League and Champion League winning campaigns and will go down Premier League legends.

With the wingers being so narrow Klopp needs to find width somehow and the sole responsibility in providing that is down to the fullbacks. After breaking into the team in the 16/17 season Trent Alexander-Arnold regarded as one of the best players to come out of the academy drawing comparisons to the great Steven Gerrard has gone on to change the dynamic of the fullback positions forever.

The attacking fullback has got 83 attacking returns in his short career so far and formed a fantastic relationship with Salah down this right side. In the summer of 2017, Liverpool pulled off one of the greatest bargains in Premier League history by signing Andrew Robertson for £8 million. The Scottish fullback has gone on to gather 61 attacking returns so far and has no sign of stopping soon.

With the key individual players done I’ll now talk more overall system based.

Liverpool expected line up and formation going into GW1 of 2022/23 season

When we have the ball we are a very expressive team with roaming positions, especially in the final third. Alisson Becker is the keeper who plays very high and is extremely confident on the ball which is crucial. Our CB’s split when he has the ball usually being Virgil Van-Dijk on the left side and Joel Matip or Ibrahim Konate off the right. When they split almost to fullback positions the 6 or DM in the midfield 3 drops between the centre backs to create almost a back 3 that being Fabinho and all 3 have the license to drive into midfield with the ball.

After the 6 drops in, it leaves the 2 midfielders ahead to either roam and find pockets of space or drop him and keep the ball moving either to the fullbacks or keep the tempo high. Both are crucial in the transition period playing off 2 or 3 touches at all times. Mainly the players you’ll find there are Thiago and Naby Keita being the more advanced of the 2 of the left and Jordan Henderson being allowed to roam and to press. Both are crucial in the first phase of the press with both being tasked to track the midfielders dropping in to give the CB’s options.

Like I said earlier the fullbacks are required to provide the width and on the ball they’re needed extremely high up often occupying the traditional winger position. They’re the main creators in the team and will often put in near 10+ crosses a game or a 50/60 yard diagonal ball which leaves you in awe the majority of the time. Not only do they play so high up offensively they are very much needed defensively and have the very specific task of pressing so high up where they do which people seem to blame both of being ‘out of position‘ as they play THAT high up. These are why they’re priced where they are still both criminally underpriced in FPL; these are of course Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

As mentioned before Roberto Firmino has such a unique role on both sides of the ball. Constantly moving, finding pockets of space ultimately trying to create space everywhere. You need such a unique skill set for this position and luckily for Klopp, he was blessed with ‘Bobby ‘ Firmino. It’s also not just Firmino anymore Diogo Jota and new man Darwin Nunez have shown already they can do the same role and offer more in attacking returns, especially in Nunez’s point. Not just can he drop deep finding the pockets linking the play he also has a huge threat in behind of the defence with frightening pace and superb finishing even Klopp found that out first hand with him scoring multiple goals against him in the Champions League. All 3 giving Klopp different looks for that CF spot.

Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, the latter doing the impossible task of replacing Sadio Mane are the real goal scorers in this team with their respective records speaking for themselves. Their job is simply  to stretch the defence and to find the back of the net

Liverpool attacking setup

That’s been the way ever since Klopp has joined but the additions in Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho bring so much quality and versatility to the side being able to do so many roles and open up certain positions the big one I’ve seen was the start of last Elliott broke into the team really changed the dynamic of the right side. Rather than Alexander-Arnold being the guy who brings the width, it was actually Elliott the furthest out wide and Trent was almost an inverted wing-back at times and making Marcos Alonso runs into the box. After Elliott got the long-term injury Henderson did a similar role but very occasionally expect to see it again when Elliott starts in the RCM position.

Mohamed Salah – £13m – 58.7% TSB – 265pts 21/22

Best Liverpool FPL Assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Mohamed Salah

Come on, stop being stubborn, just get him on your team. He’s the greatest FPL asset of all time and isn’t stopping soon. If you haven’t got the Egyptian King you’re simply trying to be clever.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – £7.5m – 56.9% – 208pts 21/22.

Best Liverpool FPL Assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Trent Alexander Arnold

In 4 years Trent has only had one season with less than 185 points and that being 160 not exactly bad still! He’s the most underpriced asset in the game I would own at £11m. He’s another cert for me. Get him in your team, don’t overthink it.

Andrew Robertson – £7m – 10.9% – 186pts 21/22

Best Liverpool FPL Assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Andy Robertson

The second LFC fullback to make the list and has the same consistency as the first. He’ll always have the output with his role in the system and if he’s getting 0.24npxG as he did last year he’ll carry on getting returns.

Darwin Nunez – £9m – 19.2%

Best Liverpool FPL Assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Darwin Nunez

The new man, after joining Liverpool for £67m this summer after scoring 34 goals last year for Benfica. After some obvious teething issues he’s adapted really well and coming off a goal and assist in a 30-minute cameo in the Community Shield off 0.6xG. He’s had a really good Pre Season with the team getting 4 goals off an xG of 3.3 in 156 minutes of action. A natural finisher and very cheap for a striker potentially starting for the best team in the league. The only thing stopping him from being the 3rd best option is simply his expected minutes. He’s guaranteed to get 30 minutes. I ‘think’ I’d rather Robbo as of today.

Luis Diaz – £8m – 24.6% – 64pts 21/22

Best Liverpool FPL Assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Luis Diaz

After joining in January Luis Diaz has made a huge impact already. Not necessarily in attacking returns yet more his outrageous skill highlight reel and attacking driving runs. As I mentioned, returns aren’t there yet but that doesn’t mean they won’t, which I’m sure they will. There were a handful of games last year he really could’ve walked away with several double-digit hauls and was inches away from doing them. He’s very attacking and loves to shoot which is great and averaged 0.58 npxG per90 last year which are phenomenal numbers. He will get more returns this year. I just think there are better options out there.
