2022/23 FPL Players to Target

Man City fixtures (CAPS home/Small away)

We will start off by looking at the Champions of the premier league. Manchester City, like much of the top six, have a great start to their campaign.

This is what their first 8 GWs look like: West Ham (A), Bournemouth (H), Newcastle (A), Crystal Palace (H), Nottingham Forest (H), Aston Villa (A), Tottenham (H), and Wolves (A). (Further Read: Initial Reaction to Top Six PL Teams Fixtures for the 22/23 Season)

FPL Players to target from Manchester City:

Erling Haaland (11.5 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Haaland

The new signing for Manchester City arrives with great expectations into England. Haaland is a known goalscorer. At Molde, he scored 14 goals in 39 appearances, at RB Salzburg he scored 17 goals in 16 games and then at Borussia Dortmund he scored an incredible 62 goals in 67 appearances

His non-penalty goal contribution per 90 is at a whopping 0.93 per 90, with an npxG of 0.67 and xA of 0.26. Half of his shorts on target result in goals and around 44% of his total shorts are on target. This means Haaland scores with almost every fifth shot that he takes!

He is a proven attacker and at 11.5, he is (at the time of writing) the third-most-expensive player. A strong captaincy shout from GW1 itself, Haaland should be in everyone’s fpl team.

Kevin De Bruyne (12 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Kevin De Bruyne

The all-time reliable Kevin De Bruyne is priced at 12 million this season, the second-highest at the time of writing. If you plan to have both Haaland and Salah in your team, squeezing in KDB can be a little difficult.

Last season he averaged 0.52 goals per 90, with an xG of 0.25 and xA of 0.37 per 90. He also played 3.47 key passes per 90, while 5.68 shot-creating actions and 0.58 goal-creating actions per 90.

KDB also averaged 4.54 touches in the opponent’s penalty box, showing his attacking instincts.

Kevin De Bruyne has always been a reliable top-six player and this season will be no different. However, can you squeeze him into a team with Haaland and Salah this season?

João Cancelo (7 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Joao Cancelo

Priced at 7 million, Joao Cancelo is a very good option for any team. He can be one of the two premium players alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold in defence.

Unlike most of Manchester City’s players, Cancelo’s position in the team is more or less cemented. The 28-year-old featured in 36 out of 38 games last season, missing one of them due to suspension.

Playing for the best defence in the league, Cancelo offers a lot of promise while attacking. His npxG + xA last season was 0.28 per 90, while averaging 2.04 shots per 90 with 0.6 of them being on target.

He also created 2.90 shots creating action per 90 and 0.44 goal-creating actions per 90. He also played 7.35 passes into the final third per 90.

Honorable mention: Ruben Dias

Liverpool

Gameweek:12345678910111213141516

Liverpool fixtures (CAPS home/Small away)

Time to look at the second team from the top six, Liverpool. The Reds’ first eight fixtures, just like Manchester City’s, look really good. They play these teams in their first eight fixtures: Fulham (A), Crystal Palace (H), Manchester United (A), Bournemouth (H), Newcastle (H), Everton (A), Wolves (H), Chelsea (A).

FPL Players to target from Liverpool:

Mohamed Salah (13 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Mo Salah

Considered the best player in the world by some, Salah was the highest point-getter in fpl last season as he got the most goals and the most assists last season. With him signing a new contract with Liverpool, Salah is set to terrorize premier league defence for more seasons to come.

In 35 games last season, Salah scored 23 times and assisted a further 13 times. The Egyptian had an expected non-penalty goal contribution of 0.85 per game. He had 4.18 shots per game with 1.65 of them on target. He also averaged around 10.54 touches in the opponent’s penalty box.

He is also the penalty taker for Liverpool adding an extra bonus.

Salah has to be the first name on everyone’s first team as he offers potential captaincy candidacy every single game that he plays.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7.5 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Trent Alexander Arnold

At 7.5 million, Trent Alexander-Arnold is a bargain. Alongside Cancelo, Trent should be a mainstay in your fpl team from the first gameweek. Playing for the second-best defence in the league, Trent, like Cancelo, offers a very high ceiling when it comes to attacking points.

In 32 games last season, Trent scored twice and assisted a further 12 goals. He averaged an expected non-penalty goal contribution of 0.42 per 90, while also averaging 1.58 shots per 90. He played 2.77 key passes per 90, 7.58 passes into the final third, and 2.64 passes into the final third per 90.

He also created 4.50 shot-creating actions per 90, while averaging 2.57 touches per 90 in the opponent’s penalty area.

While we are talking about Trent, it is important that we compare his stats to that of Andy Robertson, who is priced at 7 million.

Trent VS Robertson (per 90)

  • xA: 0.35 vs 0.19
  • npxG + xA: 0.42 vs 0.24
  • Shots per 90: 1.58 vs 0.62
  • Crosses into penalty area: 0.84 vs 0.48
  • Shot-Creating actions: 4.50 vs 3.51
  • Touches in opponent’s penalty box: 2.57 vs 3.02

As you can see Trent beats Robertson in most areas, hence making him a safer pick for most teams. However, Robertson would be a good differential pick for you.

Luis Diaz (8 million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Luis Diaz

With Sadio Mane leaving Anfield, Luis Diaz is set to become the starting LW in this Liverpool squad. We saw a glimpse of what he can do last season but now given a starting spot the sky is the limit for him.

Last season in thirteen appearances in the premier league, he already scored 4 goals and assisted a further 3.

He averaged an expected non-penalty goal contribution of 0.6 per 90, while averaging 3.57 shots per 90. He also created 4.60 shots creating action per 90.

With Jota being named as a forward for 9 million this season, his appeal has gone down, especially with the arrival of Darwin Nunez, his starts are set to be reduced.

Honourable Mentions: Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, Joel Matip, Virgil Van Dijk

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs fixtures (CAPS home/Small away)

Antonio Conte’s first full season at the club is set to begin and Spurs’ first few fixtures don’t look too bad. They start their season off by playing against these teams: Southampton (H), Chelsea (A), Wolves (H), Nottingham Forest (A), West Ham United (A), Fulham (H), Manchester City (A) and Leicester City (H).

FPL Players to target from Spurs:

Harry Kane (11.5 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Harry Kane

Harry Kane is a good choice at 11.5 Million. The English striker despite having a slow start to the season ended up contributing to 26 goals in 37 games.

He finished the season off with 17 goals, fourth behind Salah, Son, and Ronaldo. He averaged an expected non-penalty goal contribution of 0.73 per 90, while creating 3.26 shot-creating action per 90. His conversion rate was not as great last season though as he scored from only every fourth shot on target.

Had his conversion rate been better, Kane would have scored many more this season. Do you see the Englishman getting more this season?

Heung Min Son (12 Million, Midfielder)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Son

The golden boot winner last season with Salah, Son had an amazing season. Scoring 23 goals and giving 7 assists, Son finally got the recognition he deserves.

The 29-year-old averaged an expected non-penalty goal contribution of 0.73 per 90, while averaging 2.57 shots per 90. His conversion rate was really good as he scored with every other shot that he had on target.

He’s priced at 12.0 Million, which might sound slightly expensive but Son is still one to keep an eye on and should be in your first team drafts.

Honorable Mentions: Richarlison, Sergio Regulion, Emerson Royal, Kulusevski

Arsenal

Arsenal missed out on Champions League football last season, but do start their season strong and have made a number of signings. They start their season off by playing: Crystal Palace (A), Leicester City (H), Bournemouth (A), Fulham (H), Aston Villa (H), Manchester United (A), Everton (H), and Bretford (A).

Arsenal probably have the best fixtures in the top six and these are the players you can target to exploit them.

Bukayo Saka (8 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Saka

Saka featured in every Arsenal game last season, scoring 11 and assisting 7 in 2978 minutes. He averaged a non-penalty goal contribution of 0.46 per 90 last season while averaging 2.87 shots per 90.

He also played 1.96 key passes per 90, while creating 4.29 shot-creating actions also per 90. He also averaged 6.92 touches in the opponent’s box last season.

Priced at 8 million, Saka could be one of the mid-priced midfielders in your time and with Arsenal’s fixtures looking really good, he could be a great bet.

Ben White (4.5 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Ben White

Priced again at 4.5 million, Ben White can be your entry into the Arsenal defence. Mikel Arteta’s team was solid at the back last season, keeping 13 clean sheets (5th highest) and conceding just 48 goals (8th lowest).

However, Ben White’s position in the squad may not be guaranteed now that William Saliba is set to return to the club this season. However, if White is able to secure a position in the starting eleven, he can be a great buy.

Honorable Mentions: Aaron Ramsdale, Emile Smith-Rowe, Martinelli, Fabio Vieira, and Martin Odegaard.

Gabriel Jesus (8.0 Million)

Jesus is currently the second most owned striker and the sixth most owned overall asset in FPL this is mainly due to the fact that he’s cheap and is guaranteed to play week in and week out under Arteta.

A striker guaranteed to play 90 minutes every game at just 8 Million, potentially on penalties as well!

He has had at least 10 goal contributions in every season he has played in the Premier League. Last season his xGI per 90 of 0.8 was bettered by only two forwards(Kane & Ronaldo), with Arsenal’s young and improving attack which has been bolstered by the arrival of Fabio Vieira, Jesus will get ample goal-scoring opportunities and could turn out to be a very good FPL asset throughout the season.

Manchester United

The next team we will be taking a look at is Manchester United. Manchester United probably have the worst start from the top six this season. These are their first eight fixtures: Brighton(A), Brentford (A), Liverpool (H), Southampton (A), Leicester City (A), Arsenal (H), Crystal Palace (A), and Leeds United (H).

Cristiano Ronaldo (10.5 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Cristiano Ronaldo

The second-highest goalscorer after Salah and Son at 18, Ronaldo is priced at 10.5 million this season. However, there are reports saying that he is looking to leave Manchester United this season.

If the 36-year-old does end up staying at Manchester United, he could be a good differential striker to look at this season. Most people would be focused on Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah, and Ronaldo under Ten Hag can be a monster this season.

He averaged a non-penalty goal contribution of 0.63 per 90 last season, while averaging 3.81 shots per 90. His conversion rate from shots on target last season was 40%, something we could see improve under Ten Hag if he gets better chances.

Red Devils fans would be hoping Ronaldo stays at Manchester United and continues leading the team like he did last season. And if he does stay, he could be a solid differential.

Bruno Fernandes (10 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Bruno Fernandes

Priced at a whopping 10 million, Bruno Fernandes had been one of the most consistent performers for Manchester United in the past couple of seasons. In 36 games last season, he scored 10 goals while assisting a further 6.

He averaged a non-penalty goal contribution of 0.52 per 90 last season while averaging 2.43 shots per 90. He also played 2.68 key passes on average per 90, while playing 4.51 passes into the final third.

He also created 4.34 shot-creating actions per 90.

With Ronaldo set to leave Fernandes could be a good option for Manchester United, however, at 10 million he is slightly overpriced as an asset.

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Marcus Rashford

One player who could emerge as a differential is Marcus Rashford. Priced at just 6.5 million, he will be eager to impress Ten Hag and improve his performances from last season.

Honorable Mentions: Jadon Sancho and David De Gea.

Chelsea Fixtures(CAPS home/Small away)

The last team from the top six that we will be looking at is Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. Chelsea start off their season by playing: Everton (A), Tottenham (H), Leeds United (A), Leicester City (H), Southampton (A), West Ham (H), Fulham (A), and Liverpool (H).

FPL Players to target from Chelsea:

Mason Mount (8 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Mount

Mason Mount looks like a good shout for a Chelsea player at 8 Million. The 23-year-old scored 11 goals and gave 10 assists last season.

He averaged a non-penalty goal contribution of 0.51 per 90 last season, while averaging 2.61 shots per 90 last season. He also played 2.26 key passes per 90, while creating 4.22 shot-creating actions and 0.53 goal-creating actions per 90.

Mount featured in 32 games last season and will be expected to play a key role again in this Chelsea team.

Reece James (6 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Reece James

Another fellow Chelsea youth academy graduate, Reece James is one to look out for this season if he is able to keep his injury issues at bay.

Despite featuring in only 26 games last season, he scored 5 goals while assisting a further 9. His npxG + xA last season was 0.36 per 90, while averaging 1.90 shots per 90 with 0.57 of them being on target.

He also created 3.72 shots creating action per 90 and 0.49 goal-creating actions per 90. He also played 3.57 passes into the final third per 90. On an average, he put 0.61 crosses into the penalty area per 90.

Will you have Reece James in your squad this season?

Ben Chilwell (6 Million)

FPL Players to target from the top six teams for 2022/23 season ~ Ben Chilwell

Expected to be the starting left-back again this season, if he is able to overcome his injuries Chilwell can be one to look out for.

He played only 542 minutes for Chelsea last season but was still able to bag 3 goals and 1 assist. His npxG + xA last season was 0.36 per 90 while averaging 2.6 shots per 90 with 0.86 of them being on target.

He also created 3.09 shots creating action per 90. If he is fit this season, like Reece James he can be a force to be reckoned with.

Honorable Mentions: Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Timo Werner
