Best Spurs FPL Players | Spurs Preview | 2022/23 FPL Season

Best Spurs FPL Assets

Hi Folks, @FalcoFPL, here.

There’s a great atmosphere at Tottenham. With Champions League football, a top quality manager, and a host of new signings it’s no surprise that fans are optimistic for a competitive, dare I say trophy challenging, season. In this team preview, I will look at the stats, opening fixtures and best assets to own. Spurs finished the 21/22 season with a bang, and there’s an expectation they’ll start the new season strong.

Spurs FPL Preview- 2022/23 FPL Season

Playing Style

Antonio Conte will continue his preferred back three formation, 3-4-2-1. The players have a strong understanding of their roles and this will only have strengthened during pre-season. Spurs like to play out from the back, looking to find pockets of space as the attacking wingbacks push high and wide to stretch the opposition. Creating overloads on the wings draws attention away from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane, who look to find space in dangerous areas.

Team Data

  • Since Conte joined, Spurs rank 3rd for Expected Goals(xG), Non-penalty Expected Goals(nPxG), Big Chances and Goals scored. Only Liverpool and City ahead of them.
  • Defensively, Spurs rank 3rd for Expected Goals Conceded.
  • Across the entire season – Spurs are 3rd for NPxG+xA per90 (2.91), above Chelsea (2.83) and only behind Liverpool (3.78) and Man City (3.73).

Fixtures

Spurs rank 8th for fixtures from gameweek 1-8 on FFHub’s fixture ticker.

It’s quite a favourable run for Spurs. Four decent home fixtures, three of which make Son and Kane good captain options. The away fixtures are much tougher. Chelsea usually have our number, so that tie isn’t ideal GW2, but there’s opportunity for points at West Ham and Man City who will attack Spurs, which gives Son and Kane opportunity for counter-attacks.

Spurs New Signings

Spurs have strengthened their squad considerably and there’s some exciting options for FPL.

Fraser Forster (4.0m)

A backup for Lloris, will see very few minutes.

Clément Lenglet (5.0m)

Spurs couldn’t get the world-class LCB they wanted this window, so they’ve opted for a season loan in Lenglet. A smart, low-risk signing who suits a back three. He’s looking to rejuvenate his career, similar to Kulusevski and Bentancur. Ben Davies(5m) has an injury, so Lenglet may start the season in LCB.

Yves Bissouma (5.0m)

Spurs have bolstered their midfield and have many quality options. I think Bissouma will nail a spot in the starting XI, but it’s difficult to tell how early this will happen. He isn’t an option in FPL, so avoid him and the other Spurs CMs.

Ivan Perišić (5.5m) –

The most exciting signing in FPL terms. Perišić is likely to hold the left wingback position and link up with Son. Currently, Perišić only has featured in only one pre-season match, so Ryan Sessegnon (4.5m) may start the opening game against Southampton.

Djed Spence (4.5m)

Another exciting FPL asset. Spence may be the preferred right wingback in time, but it all depends on how quickly he adapts to the PL. It’s unlikely he starts as the main RWB to begin with.

Richarlison (8.5m)

A great, versatile, signing for Spurs. Richarlison can cover Kane in the forward role and operate on the wings. He is a very determined player who will not want to ride the bench, so keep an eye on him as he could break into the starting XI.

Gianni Vio

Okay, this one isn’t a player, he’s a set-piece coach, but Gianni deserves a mention. He is renowned for his in-depth analysis of set pieces. Spurs often struggle against low-block teams, but with the addition of Gianni, I believe Spurs will improve in breaking teams down.

Spurs Starting XI and Squad Depth

Gameweek 1 predicted line-up:

* Predicted team to start the season. Davies carrying an injury.. Richarlison banned GW1. A small chance Bissouma starts over Hojbjerg.

Set Piece Takers

Penalties – Kane

Free Kicks – Kane • Son • Dier (Attempts at goal are up for grabs. Kane is greedy and takes most of them, but he isn’t good at them. Dier is the best taker, but doesn’t get many. Potentially, set piece coach, Gianni Vio, will give them to someone else or help Kane improve.

Corners – Son

Best Spurs FPL Assets

Hugo Lloris (5.5m)

Best Spurs FPL Assets- Lloris

Since Conte joined, Spurs have kept 13 cleansheets in 28 games, ranked 3rd for Expected Goals conceded(xCS). Behind only Liverpool and Man City with 15 CS’s each. Hugo is nailed and will play every minute possible. Spurs will be stronger defensively, so there’s potential for more CS’s this season.

Ivan Perišić (5.5m), Djed Spence (4.5m), Matt Doherty (5m), and Ryan Sessegnon (4.5m)

Best Spurs FPL Assets- Spence

The best defensive Spurs asset will be whoever locks the wingback position. The expectation is Perišić (5.5m) and Spence (4.5m) will become the number one choices in time, however, Doherty (5m) and Sessegnon (4.5m) are most likely to start the season. They have a chance to nail their place in the team.

From Gameweek 24-38, Sessegnon (4.5m) was first for Expected Assists per 90 minutes (0.32), ahead of Liverpool’s, Trent Alexander-Arnold (0.31). If Perišić nails down the spot, I believe we will see similar numbers. Alternatively, if Perišić gets injured or Sessegnon nails down the position, he will be the (4.5m) bargain of the season. Currently, the Spurs wingbacks are a wait-and-see until we know how often Conte will rotate his players.

Heung-min Son (12m)

Best Spurs FPL Assets- Son

Son will be as deadly as ever, and his new 12m price tag shouldn’t put anyone off. Across the entire 21/22 season, Son was ranked 3rd for NPxG + xA per 90 (0.73). Teammate, Kane, was joint 3rd (0.73). Kane looks sharp in preseason, which means good things for Son.

Dejan Kulusevski (8m)

Best Spurs FPL Assets- Kulusevski

Kulusevski has been impressive since joining and seems to have great chemistry with Kane and Son. He should be a fantastic asset at 8m and an affordable way into the Spurs attack. Richarlison (8.5m) hasn’t joined to ride the bench though, so there’s a chance he takes minutes away from Kulusevski.

Harry Kane (11.5m)

Best Spurs FPL Assets- Kane

Since Antonio Conte’s arrival, Kane is top for NPxG (15.14), xG (18.21), Big Chances, shots, and shots on target. Kane has been sharp in the preseason. I think he will be challenging both Golden Boot and Playmaker of the Season this campaign.

Differential Picks

Best Spurs FPL Assets- Doherty

Harry Kane (11.5m) currently has less than 20% ownership. This makes Kane a tasty alternative to other premium players and a great captain option.

Alternatively, Kulusevski (8m) has under 10% ownership and will definitely hit the ground running. His chemistry with Kane and Son has looked very good preseason, and it will only develop as they more play together.

Matt Doherty (5m) looks set to start the season. He is owned by only 1.4% of managers. Keep an eye on Doherty as he is a differential pick with big upside.

Spurs FPL Watchlist

  • Wingbacks. When we know who the preferred options are, jump on them straight away, or risk missing out on the fun.
  • If you are one of the crazy managers going without Son and Kane, make sure you have a plan/route to one of them if they pop off out the gate, which is a strong possibility.
  • Kulusevski is nailed to begin with and is a fantastic, under-the-radar option. While Richarlison will fight for his spot, Kulu’s impact on Kane and Son is just too great to not start. He would need a bad run of games to fall out of favour.

Verdict on Spurs FPL Assets

There’s lots of FPL potential at Spurs. Currently, I believe Spurs assets are overlooked for the opening fixtures. There’s an opportunity to get ahead if you pick the right players. Across the season, It’s likely both Son and Kane aim for the 200 point mark. The wingbacks are cheap and crucial to Spurs’ attacking play, so I’m confident that they’ll be good assets. We’re just a little unsure who will start the season and for how long.
