8 Simple FPL Tips For a Good FPL Overall Rank | FPL Paz

With the number of new players each season, securing a Top 1K finish gets more and more complicated. Reflecting on my past season, I developed 8 quick tips that helped me finish 804th in the world. These FPL tips can also help you CRUSH your season goal, whether top 10k, top 50k, top 100k, or just to win your mini-league. LET’S GET INTO IT:

Tips penned by @FPLPAZ who finished with an overall rank of 804 in the 2021/22 FPL season & 60K in the 2022/23 FPL season. He has his own blog as well: profantasytalk.com, do follow him and check out his FPL blog!

8 Simple & Effective FPL Tips

FPL Tip #1: Do Not Waste Transfers

Transfers are a precious commodity in FPL since each costs you 4 points (yes, even a β€œfree” transfer). Each GW, managers fall into the trap of forcing players out or taking multiple hits to bring in a player without properly analyzing the transfer. With every transfer, I ask myself the following:

  1. Why am I making this transfer? (Fomo, good Fixtures, good underlying stats, captaincy)
  2. How will the transfer help my team (e.g., enable another move, take an injured player out, catch up to the template); and
  3. Will the player(s) I transfer in outscore the player(s) I transfer out by 4 points within a set number of GWs (usually 4-6 for me, but you should develop your flexible criteria for each move).

This simple analysis will help you improve your decision-making and truly value every transfer.

FPL Tip #2: Information Is King

The goal of FPL is to make the best possible decision with the information we have available at the time. Information can come in various ways, such as press conferences, training photos, reliable Twitter accounts, waiting until after the midweek games finish, and FPL Data models. This season, I always waited until the last minute to do transfers as I value gathering as much information as possible before the deadline over 0.1-0.2 less in team value. Information is king in FPL, and to do well, managers must fully invest in gathering as much of it as possible for each GW before making any moves.

FPL Tip #3: Don’t Be TOO Reactive

Managers tend to be too reactive in FPL, which leads to bad decisions. There is room to be reactive in FPL, especially early in the season when there is less information on assets. However, I see many managers just transfer in a bad FPL prospect because he just scored a brace the GW before, transfer a good FPL prospect out because he blanked in two straight GWs, or just keep taking unnecessary hits. Be patient, use planning tools for captaincy/fixture turns, and trust your research, so you are not chasing the pack but instead are being proactive.

FPL Tip #4: Judge the Process, Not the Result

FPL is a game that involves a mixture of skill and luck, so sometimes, your good decisions will not work out. For example, a player might have great underlying stats and upcoming fixtures but has not scored recently and ends up blanking in those fixtures. In this case, you did not make a wrong decision; you just had an unlucky result, so you should keep trusting that same process. However, it might be time to change the decision-making process if you pick a player with bad underlying stats and ok fixtures just because of a feeling. The importance here is to judge the process you used to arrive at your decision, trust the process if it works for you, and not quickly become discouraged with that process if the result is not what you expected.

FPL Tip #5: Use a Hybrid of the Eye Test and Statistics

The FPL Community seems to be divided between those who prefer the eye test vs. those who prefer statistics to help them analyze their transfers. However, managers seeking a top-rank finish need to develop a Hybrid of the Eye Test and Statistics to use the advantages of both before making transfers. The Eye Test offers managers the advantage of consuming as much football as possible and supplementing their research with what they saw in the live game or highlights. Statistics provide managers easily consumable objective data to identify undervalued assets, predict form, and interpret football matches. Managers who can find the perfect balance between watching as much football as possible and using objective interpretative data throughout the season will find themselves closer to crushing their season goals.

FPL Tip #6: Captaincy is Key

Captaincy is the most critical decision you can make for each GW, as that decision can make or break your GW. Your captain should be a safe pick who consistently gets FPL points rather than a punt. There is a time to be different in captaincy, such as when highly owned premium options have a tough fixture (e.g., Salah against Man City). This is when you should take advantage and pick your differential (consistent) captain. I also recommend managers to plan (3-4 GWs ahead) to see who their captain will be each GW. This way, if in 3 GWs you do not have the best captain that GW, you can plan your transfers accordingly to bring in that player for captaincy reasons. Following these simple but KEY captaincy principles will massively improve your rank.

Bonus: Do utilize our captaincy metrics which had a 32/38 return record last season.

Tip #7: Know When to Be Aggressive and Defensive

The FPL season is LONG, and with limited transfers, chips, DGWs, and BGWs, managers need to know when to be aggressive and defensive. The GWs to be aggressive are the ones in which you are using a chip, there is a DGW, or the top captaincy option has a tough fixture. In these situations, do not be afraid to make high-upside transfers and pick a different consistent captain. The GWs to be defensive are the ones in which you are not set up well in a BGW/DGW, are not using a chip when other managers are, or do not have the top captaincy option. In these situations, managers need to make damage limitation decisions such as taking a hit for the top captaincy option and bringing in multiple DGW players, or the top options in BGWs.

FPL Tip #8: Be Flexible and Adaptable

The best managers are the ones that are flexible and adapt quickly to the constant changes throughout the FPL season. Mistakes like being too stubborn, having biases against a team/player because they hurt you before, or speaking in absolutes (I never/I always) will just hurt you in the long run. Last season, many managers failed to adapt and be flexible with the amount of DGWs, postponements, and covid uncertainty, leading to disappointing seasons. The reality is that no season is the same, so the more flexible you are, the quicker you adapt to the changes throughout the season, the better you will end up doing.
