Brighton 2021/22 Season Overview

Brighton exceeded all expectations last season and finished 9th following on from 16th in the 2020/21 season. Pretty impressive considering they sold Ben White to Arsenal for 50 million. How did they do this? Their strength last season was in their defence which only conceded 44 goals compared to Arsenal’s 48 and Manchester United’s 57. Therefore, this made Brighton hard to beat, and it worked perfectly away from home, as the home team pushed for that elusive winner, and on multiple occasions last season Brighton would, in fact, get that winner, Brentford or Tottenham come to mind. As a result, Brighton had the fifth-best away record in the Premier League.

What has changed? I feel I need to whisper this but clubs haven’t cottoned onto how good goalkeeper Robert Sanchez is. Sanchez made his debut when he was 22, has made 64 Premier League appearances, 21 clean sheets, and outperformed his ‘post-shot expected goals’ again for the second season in a row. Sanchez has only played 64 Premier League games but his progression is vast.

If you saw the Groß goal vs Manchester United where Sanchez distributes the ball 70 yards to Cucurella and after this goal is scored the players run to Sanchez as they understand his importance to the team. Furthermore, and an underrated stat is when Mathew Ryan the previous Brighton goalkeeper was playing for Brighton he didn’t command his area and any cross had to be dealt with by a Brighton defender.

However, under Sanchez, no goalkeeper in the Premier League stopped more crosses last season at 11.7% (FBref) and this allowed quick counters through Lamptey or Cucurella. Can a goalkeeper change your position by 7 places? No, but can he breed confidence? Yes, and with the addition of Cucurella Brighton’s defence has significantly improved. Can Brighton finish 9th again? They’re well equipped under Potter to finish 8th – 12th.

Brighton Fixtures

Brighton FPL Fixtures

Which team has the most difficult start to the Premier League season? According to the Atheltic, Brighton has the joint 8th easiest opening fixtures. The data is weeks 1-5. As mentioned above, the strength is in Brighton’s defence, look at fixtures 6-8! Leicester at home, Bournemouth away, and then a guaranteed 3 points at home to Crystal Palace right? The opening eight fixtures make a Brighton defender very attractive from an FPL perspective. Why? They’re so cheap and they enable you to improve the quality of the rest of your FPL team. Furthermore, with those three extra fixtures above that means Brighton avoid playing Champions League opponents until week 9.

Brighton Predicted Starting XI and Formation:

Brighton Predicted Starting XI and Formation for the 2022/23 FPL Season

Trying to predict Brighton’s starting XI or formation has proven to be difficult in the past for Brighton fans and this stat will show you why; Data from FBref shows Brighton started the 38 league games last season with seven different formations: 3-5-2 (11 times), 4-4-2 (9), 3-4-3 (7), 4-2-3-1 (7), 4-1-4-1 (2), 4-3-3 (1), 3-4-1-2 (1). However, Brighton finished the season in scintillating form with a 3-4-3 and preseason indicates that Brighton will line up with this formation.

Why this formation? At times Lewis Dunk was finding himself as the only CB in this formation, risky? Not to Potter as he fully trusts his captain and CDMs to cover if required. This allowed Cucurella as a LCB to join attacks and overload the left-hand flank. Using the Brighton vs Manchester United game as an example Manchester United could not cope and 3/4 of Brighton’s goals came from this flank.

Now add a fully-fit Lamptey and Webster to the equation on the right-hand side and you can see the appeal. Furthermore, the form of Trossard and Groß couldn’t be ignored. It was rumored that Groß would be heading back to Germany and then his end-of-season form was quite simply outstanding. Groß created 2.6 chances per 90 minutes last season and this was only bettered by Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kevin De Bruyne. Having Trossard and Groß next to Welbeck is an exciting thought and a 5-1 win vs Espanyol on Saturday only heightens expectations and excitement. (Trossard hat-trick)

Brighton FPL Assets to Target and Avoid:

Robert Sanchez:

Brighton best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Sanchez

Are you looking for a set and forget 4.5 million goalkeeper? It has to be Sanchez, he scored the most FPL points for a 4.5 goalkeeper last season with 126 and that’s only 4 points from Edouard Mendy of Chelsea who’s featuring in a lot of FPL teams for the upcoming season. Thomas Tuchel has stated that Chelsea won’t be ready for the start of the season and I advise picking Sanchez or David Raya 4.5 at Brentford.

Sanchez Verdict – Target! The best 4.5 goalkeeper in FPL

Tariq Lamptey vs Lewis Dunk:

Brighton best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Lamptey vs Dunk

Lamptey featured in 30 Premier League matches last season and accumulated 74 points vs Dunk’s 29 Premier League matches and 92 points. On the surface, it looks like Dunk is the better value? However, Lamptey only played 1,547 minutes vs Dunk’s 2,573 minutes. Therefore, it goes down to you as an FPL manager, do you want to gamble on Lamptey’s attacking potential? Or play safe with Dunk’s consistency?

More information needed? Tariq Lamptey burst onto the scene in 2020 and what an FPL gem he was. Lamptey would dribble past opponents with ease and has been touted for an England call-up. However, in 2020 Lamptey suffered a hamstring injury and we didn’t see him play for Brighton again until October 2021. Lamptey’s first 90 minutes came in December 2021, a year on from his hamstring injury. Lamptey featured 30 times for Brighton last season but only completed 90 minutes 7 times. When Brighton hit form Lamptey was being used as an impact sub. Looking at preseason the signs are that Lamptey will be starting at RWB and that’s amazing FPL news. But if you pick Lamptey, it’s a gamble, but is it a calculated gamble? Lamptey gets more points per minute and crucially if Lamptey gets taken off after minute 65/70 you keep any clean sheet points.

Lewis Dunk:

Brighton best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Lewis Dunk

Lewis Dunk picked up 92 points from the 29 Premier League matches he played last season. If Dunk had not picked up a knee injury that would have been roughly 120 points. This can only be bettered by Pontus Jansson’s 122 points and Marc Guéhi’s 123 points. I know it’s theoretical but it must be considered when evaluating 4.5 million defenders.

Tariq Lamptey vs Lewis Dunk Verdict – Avoid Lamptey. Buy Dunk.

Leandro Trossard:

Brighton best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Trossard

Trossard finished 12th for midfielders in FPL last season with 141 points and that’s ahead of Foden, Mahrez, Ødegaard, Barnes, and Benrahma. Trossard at 6.5 million offers incredible value and he’s in emphatic form after scoring a hat-trick vs Espanyol in Brighton’s last friendly. In addition, Trossard will be playing off the striker and this will lead to more shots on goal. Trossard scored 8 goals last season and registered 4 assists and 16 bonus points. Trossard is 27 years old, it’s the World Cup in December and Trossard will be eying up a starting spot in that Belgium team. Trossard will be in your thoughts at some point and be ahead of the crowd. Target fixtures 4-8 as Trossard could be your hidden differential.

Trossard Verdict – Target.

Deniz Undav:

Brighton best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Undav

Unfortunately for Undav, he has an in-form Welbeck ahead of him and Potter likes to slowly integrate players into his first team. Therefore, I’m expecting Undav to feature from the bench initially and it’s unsure whether Undav or Maupay would be the second-choice striker. If Brighton needed a goal who would Potter turn to? What we do know is Undav is clinical in front of goal! Undav won the Belgian Division A Golden Boot last season with 26 goals in 37 appearances. This is exactly the sort of player Brighton have been after due to their infamous love-hate relationship with ‘Expected goals’ (xG).

Undav Verdict – Avoid.

Brighton FPL Assets ~ Ones to Watch:

Brighton best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Cucurella
  • Marc Cucurella
  • Karou Mitouma / Jermey Sarmiento / Julio Enciso
  • Danny Welbeck

Why Marc Cucurella is one to watch? Is Cucurella off to Manchester City? Will he start the opening game for Brighton? At 5.0 million he’s a must if Cucurella moves to Manchester City. Cucurella created 38 chances from open-play last season and that was only bettered by Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold and this shows Cucurella’s attacking prowess. With Brighton’s favourable opening fixtures Cucurella is an exciting FPL asset to watch.

Brighton best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Karou Mitouma

If you don’t support Brighton I expect a lot of people would not have heard of Karou Mitouma £5.0 Million, Jermey Sarmiento £4.5 Million, or Julio Enciso £5.0 Million. Three exciting direct wingers who are all looking to make an impact. Mitouma had an outstanding loan at USG in Belgium as they went on to win the Belgian League and Mitouma scored 8 goals in 20 appearances.

Sarmiento made his full Premier League debut last season vs West Ham but suffered an unfortunate hamstring injury and went on to make 5 appearances in total. However, with a preseason behind him, I would back Sarmiento to make the biggest impact out of the three players mentioned, and at only £4.5 million he’s one to watch.

Enciso signed this summer and was rumored to be leaving Brighton on loan but has impressed Potter so much in preseason that Enciso will now be staying with the squad. With 5 subs being introduced this season keep an eye on all three of these players. They’re cheap and they’re fantastic for your FPL drafts if you’re playing that as well.

Have you seen Danny Welbeck lately? He’s in the shape of his life and he’s going to lead the Brighton strike force from the start of the season. We all know what Danny Welbeck has to offer and at 6.5 million could Welbeck be the explosive differential your FPL team requires?

Verdict on Brighton FPL assets:

As mentioned above, I would be targeting Brighton defenders and with the FPL prices, this gives you a cheap route into the Brighton defence. You could either set and forget Sanchez as your goalkeeper, take a risk on the explosive Tariq Lamptey or play it safe and go for the ever-reliable Lewis Dunk. With the sixth-best defence in the Premier League last season this should not be ignored.

As for the attackers, the signs are promising, however, I would watch the likes of Trossard and co and make judgement calls from week 4. Brighton scored 13 goals in their last 5 matches of the 21/22 season and beat Espanyol 5-1 in their last preseason game. One thing is for sure, you’ll be targeting Brighton players to get into your FPL teams at some point this season so revert to this article if you feel unsure or need further clarification or send me a message on Twitter(@TomTomwarren16).
