One FPL Differential Pick From Each Team Ahead of GW1

The new FPL season is just a couple of days away, and managers must be close to what will be the squad that they would want at the start. Everyone is looking for that one or two differentials who would be an X-factor to their teams. In this blog, we bring you one FPL differential option from each team to consider for your squads.

Note: Ownership mentioned is at the time of writing and subject to change.

One FPL differential pick to consider from each team

Arsenal – Gabriel Magalhães, £5.0, TSB : 8.4%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Arsenal - Gabriel

Arsenal have very good fixtures to start of the season. Six of their first eight fixtures have an FDR rating of 2. The Gunners had the sixth-best defense in the league in terms of xGC and kept the fifth highest number of clean sheets with 13.

Very interestingly though, Arsenal had a terrible start to last season, losing each of their first three games. Gabriel wasn’t part of any of those games. Post the start, Arsenal had the fourth-best defense in the league in terms of goals conceded (39). Essentially, Gabriel was the difference maker!

Enough of Arsenal, let us talk about the player. The Brazilian scored a whopping 5 goals last season, the most by a defender in the league. He was the fourth most for shots in the box among defenders in the league (27), since GW 4.

With Gabriel Jesus signing, the Center backs of the opponents will be busy marking the striker from set pieces. As a result of the other Gabriel, the Gabriel we are talking about may have more freedom in the box. Given his knack of winning balls in the air, he might get more opportunities to score goals.

Aston Villa- Ollie Watkins, £7.5, TSB: 3.9%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Aston Villa - Watkins

The forward position was a major stumbling block for FPL managers. Those who cracked that puzzle went on to do well. This season as well, the position could pose challenges, as players are mid-priced and can become really tricky to get to. Ollie Watkins, we believe is one FPL differential option managers must consider in their teams.

The Englishman finished last season really well. He scored 4 goals and further assisted another in the last 8 Gameweeks. It was his most productive period of the season. He was third highest for shots in the box and eight best for xG during that period. He has also scored 1 goal and assisted 1 during the preseason so far.

Each of Aston Villa’s first three fixtures have an FDR rating of 2. After that, the going gets tougher. Therefore, if you are looking for a reliable option up front in the initial weeks, Watkins could be the best option.

Pro Tip: Watkins could be an alternative for someone like a Mount or a Diaz in the initial weeks. You can replace your £4.5 forward with him, and replace Mount or Diaz with someone like Leon Bailey, who is one red hot form in pre-season. Oh, and we mention Bailey here as he would be our alternative pick from Villa, Steven Gerrard we are pretty sure, would concur!

Bournemouth – Philip Billing, £5.5 TSB: 0.3%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Bournemouth - Billing

It is always difficult to pick players from newly promoted clubs. However, having seen Bournemouth just a couple of years back, we have an idea as to how some of their players can fare at the top level. Philip Billing has been a consistent performer in the Premier League. But has ever been an FPL asset? not really, but this season could be different.

Billing had 20 goal contributions (10 G 10 A) in the championship last season. This attributes to 44% of his career goal contributions. The last time we saw him in the Premier League he was still playing as the disruptor in the middle of the mark, and to be fair to him he did a tremendous at that.

Billing also scored 8 goals and registered 4 assists in the championship in the 2020-21 season. If we compare that to the 15-16 season and 16-17 season in the championship, he registered 3 goals and 0 assists combined. Therefore, the last two seasons are not necessarily down to playing in the championship alone. There has been a clear shift in role for the Danish midfielder. Therefore, we believe that he is the best FPL differential from Bournemouth.

Brentford- Pontus Jansson, £4.5, TSB: 2.9%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Brentford - Jansson

Brentford were the tenth best in the league defensively, with regards to xGC (56.4). That for a newly promoted club is quite remarkable. They were ninth best for big chances conceded (68) in the league. To put things in perspective, that is better than the likes of Manchester United and Leicester.

One of the key players in the Bees’ defense was Pontus Jansson. He registered 3 goals and 4 assists last season, and scored 122 FPL points. Brentford has really good fixtures to start the season. Six out of their first nine games have an FDR rating of 2. It would be wise to have one of their defensive assets in your teams.

Here is an eye-catching stat about Pontus Jansson. He had 8 big chances last season, more than any other defender in the league last season!

Brighton – Lewis Dunk, £4.5, TSB: 1.8%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Brighton - Dunk

Another team that has been extremely reliable defensively over the past two seasons has been Brighton. Last season, the Seagulls were the sixth best in the league for goals conceded (44). In the 2020-21 season, Potter’s men were the third best in the league defensively, in terms of xGC. Going into the new season, as a result, once again, managers would turn towards the South-coast side for defensive assets.

FPL managers have normally gone in with Robert Sanchez in goal. This season, however, he has an ownership of 14%. This is significantly less by his standards. This reduction in ownership is down to the cheap pricing of some of the big-name goalkeepers. This, as a result, opens the door for Lewis Dunk as an FPL differential option at the back.

Dunk has been one of the most reliable performers in FPL over the years. Last season, however, he had a dip. The Brighton captain scored only one goal last season. However, he did score 10 goals in the three seasons prior to that. With good fixtures at the start, with consistency in minutes, Dunk can be a good enabler at the back for managers.

Chelsea – Kalidou Koulibaly, £5.5, TSB: 5.2%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Chelsea - Koulibaly

Chelsea had an up and down season last year and barely scrapped into the top 4. However, one thing that remained constant throughout the season was a solid defense. The Blues kept the third highest number of clean sheets last season (16). Furthermore, they were the second best for NPxGA (34.8).

Granted, they have lost some key defenders this season. However, with N’golo Kante having a proper pre season, alongside Chilwell and James, who both missed games last season, is a massive boost. On top of that, the arrival of Kalidou Koulibaly makes the defense stronger, despite losing Rudiger.

The Senegalese International scored 12 goals in his last 5 seasons in Seri A. 3 of those came last season. With the quality delivery from set pieces from the likes of Mount, James, and Chilwell, the center back is likely to get more chances in front of goal.

Koulibaly is an alternative to someone like Thiago Silva, who might be rotated more because of his age factor, with a World Cup looming. Koulibaly has shown consistency in terms of fitness during his Napoli stint. He therefore can be a reliable FPL differential option.

Crystal Palace – Wilfried Zaha, £7.0, TSB: 7.1%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Palace ~ Wilfred zaha
Zaha ⚽ 🦅

Crystal Palace had a pretty extraordinary season last time around. Given the fact that they had to get over this “Ageing squad” crisis, finishing 12th was a pretty commendable effort. In fact, they were by far the best team in the bottom half of the table. Furthermore, only 6 teams ended the season with a better goal difference than the Eagles (4).

One of the big reasons for Viera’s men doing so well was their talisman, Wilfried Zaha. The Ivorian had his best FPL season, scoring 150 points, and registering 14 goals and 2 assists in the process. The key stats back his form up too. Zaha had his best season for Big Chances, xG, and second best for shots in the box in his FPL career.

The Crystal Palace man has been on fire in pre-season too. He has been involved in 7 goals (4G 3A) so far. The South London side, however, has some tough fixtures to start the season. Therefore, it would be wise to stay away from their players for the first 4 GWs. After that, though, Zaha must be one of the go-to players for managers.

Zaha – Key Stats

  • Top for goals and xG among midfielders below £8.0.
  • Second highest for shots in the box among such players
  • Is on penalties

Everton – Dominic Calvert-Lewin, £8.0, TSB: 1.9%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Everton - Calvert Lewin

We are going to be extremely honest here, Everton are one of the teams you would want to stay away from, at the start of the season. They have been in a bit of a mess since the start of last season. They have also lost their talisman, Richarlison, to Spurs.

So why DCL, you ask? Well, that is because of Everton’s fixtures from GW 2 to GW 5. After facing Chelsea on opening day, the Toffees have four consecutive fixtures with an FDR rating of 2. Over the years, we have seen Calvert-Lewin perform really well in such games.

Despite missing two-thirds of last season, Calvert-Lewin was second best for almost all key stats, after Richarlison.

Richarlison vs DCL comparison ~FFHub

Quite interestingly, DCL comes out on top for key stats per start. Therefore, it is obvious to note that when he plays, he can be a devastating player, especially against weaker opponents.

Fulham – Harry Wilson, £6.0, TSB: 0.8%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Fulham - Harry Wilson

Andreas Pereira has been the most popular pick from Fulham, given his cheap pricing. Granted, he is the best bench fodder in the game at the moment. However, if Fulham end up performing well, if we are looking for a more concrete option Harry Wilson could be man to pick for us FPL managers.

Whilst Pereira is unproven in the Premier League, Harry Wilson isn’t. Despite playing only half of the 2019-20 season, the youngster registered 7 goals and 1 assist in the league, while playing for Bournemouth. He registered 17 goals and 30 assists in the championship, over the past couple of seasons. In fact, he registered the most assists(19) in England’s top 4 tiers across all competitions, last season.

The Welshman has been involved in two goals (1G 1A) in 3 pre-season matches. The Cottagers, however, do have a tricky start to the season. They also have a history of dropping down to the championship immediately after getting promoted. Therefore, it is a wait-and-watch as far as spending so much money on a Fulham player. Having said that, do keep an eye on Harry Wilson.

Leeds- Illan Meslier – £4.5, TSB: 3.2%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Leeds -Meslier

Leeds are another team to stay away from for FPL managers in our opinion. However, 8 out of their first `10 fixtures have an FDR rating of just 2. Therefore, their players can be considered.

Leeds’ opening fixtures

Leeds have lost two of their best players, Raphinia and Phllips. So, in all honesty, they are in bit of a mess. They would be looking up to their third best player, Meslier to come up trumps to help keep them up in the league.

Meslier topped the charts in the league among goalkeepers for saves and indeed baseline BPS. Interestingly, each of Meslier’s 5 clean sheets last season came against teams with FDR rating of 2 or 3. This springs hope for FPL managers to consider the Frenchman as an option for the first 10 GWs.

Pro Tip: It is best to stay away from Leeds’ players. However, if you are so keen on having a player from them, Meslier is the top pick.

Leicester – James Maddison, £8.0, TSB: 5.8%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Leicester -Maddison

We still can’t get over the fact that James Maddison is owned by a mere 5.8% of the managers. The Leicester man was the fifth highest scoring midfielder in the league last season, with 181 points. This was also his personal best in FPL, despite playing significantly lesser minutes than some of his other seasons.

One thing FPL managers may have missed out on is the lack of European football for Leicester this season. Because the Foxes went all the way to the semi-finals of the Conference League, they had to rotate a lot of their players throughout the campaign. However, this season they are free from such commitments. This will make a huge difference, as they still have kept hold of all their key players, with all their key players having a pre-season.

Leicester’s fixtures at the start of the season seems tricky. However, after the initial games, they have a clean run all the way up and till GW 13. Maddison has been in good form in pre-season, adding a goal and 2 assists to his tally.

James Maddison – Key Stats

  • Third best for assists (11) last season among players under £8.0
  • Fourth best for bonus points (24) among such players
  • Top for goal involvements (23) among such players

Liverpool- Joel Matip, £6.0, TSB : 2.7%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Liverpool -Matip

We are going to be very honest here, it wouldn’t be a wise idea to look for a differential option from Liverpool. Just go ahead with 3 out of the 4 best options we have from the Reds.

Despite that, if you are still looking for an alternative option from Liverpool, Joel Matip is the man to look at. The Cameroonian international registered 3 goals and 3 assists last season and most importantly played 2790 minutes in the Premier League. Believe it or not, that is by far the most he has played in his Liverpool career.

Liverpool has been using Konate for cup matches, Matip has been a constant feature in the league. With Trent’s quality deliveries from set pieces, plus Matip’s ball-carrying ability, he can get more attacking returns this season, whenever he plays.

Manchester City – Riyad Mahrez, £8.0, TSB: 6.0%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Man City -Mahrez

One of the biggest problems managers have had in the past with Mahrez has had nothing to do with Mahrez himself. The Pep Roulette has been the problem. However, this season, at least as it stands that problem might be resolved.

While Mahrez signed a new three-year deal, the other players who normally feature on the right flank, Sterling and Jesus, have moved on to greener pastures. Therefore, we pretty much have a situation where Mahrez has no competition. Of course, Alvarez or someone else may play there every now and again. But at least, in the initial weeks, Mahrez has a clean run.

Man City players stats per 90 from last season
Man City players stats per 90 from last season ~FFHub

Mahrez is top for big chances per 90 among his compatriots and is also top for goal involvements per 90. That is extraordinary considering the season KDB had. Fixtures has never been a player for Mahrez or Manchester City. We will get a better understanding once the community shield is over. However, as it stands, given that his place is no longer under threat, Mahrez, dare I say, is not just a differential option, but the best Manchester City asset in FPL.

Manchester United – Anthony Martial – £7.0, TSB: 7.0%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Man United ~ Martial

It has not been a good time for Martial in the last couple of seasons. He tried to move out on loan to a new league, that didn’t quite work out either. As a result of which FPL has been really kind pricing him at £7.0, considering someone like a Rashford is priced at £6.5 despite having just one bad season.

Martial has been on fire in pre-season for Manchester United. The Frenchman has registered 3 goals and 1 assist so far and has looked close to his best as well. When he is on form, we know Martial is an explosive FPL asset. We saw that in the 2019-20 season when he registered 17 goals and 9 assists, with 200 FPL points.

Another key reason why Martial could become an option is the uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo. The United talisman has made it clear that he wants to leave. Although he is still at the club, he may not be in the right space to start until the transfer window is over. Plus he has had no pre-season. Martial, therefore, is the first-choice striker going into the new campaign.

Newcastle United – Nick Pope, £5.0, TSB: 4.9%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Burnley ~ Pope

Pope has been one of the most consistent performers in FPL over the years. The Englishman has registered 130, 144, 170, and 152 points in his four previous full seasons in the top flight. Quite remarkable considering the fact that he has been part of a team that has largely been languishing towards the bottom half of the table.

Pope has finally earned his move to a team with bigger ambitions than Burnely. Indeed, Newcastle have ambitions to reach the European positions in the near future. The Magpies have added one of Europe’s most touted defenders, in Sven Botman, to their ranks. Furthermore, Kieran Trippier is once again fully fit and has had a proper pre-season.

Since Eddie Howe joined Newcastle, they have improved dramatically. Having conceded 30 goals in 14 matches prior to his arrival, they gave away just 32 goals in the remaining 24 matches. Each of their 8 clean sheets also came during this time. In fact, had the season started after Eddie Howe joined Newcastle, the North East club would have finished sixth in the table!

Seven of Newcastle’s first ten fixtures have an FDR rating of 2. We all know how explosive Pope can be as a goalkeeper. As a result, he can be a set and forget option for managers.

Nottingham Forest – Jesse Lingard, £6.0, TSB: 4.7%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Nottingham Forest - Lingard

As mentioned earlier, it is always difficult to pick players from newly promoted clubs. Here, we have a player who has proven in the past that he can deliver FPL points if he plays regularly. That is something he will get at Forest.

As recently as in the 2020-21 season Lingard registered 9 goals and 5 assists, getting 106 FPL points in the process. In fact, in the time in which he featured for West Ham in that season, nobody else had more goal contributions (14) in the league.

7 of Forest’s first 12 matches have an FDR rating of 2. In fact, they only face two of last season’s top six during this period. Lingard, therefore, if he shows glimpses of the form he showed a year and a half back, it would be wise to bring him into your teams.

Southampton – Kyle Walker-Peters, £4.5, TSB: 1.3%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Southampton - Walker-Peters

Southampton are one of those teams with good fixtures at the start of the season. This bodes well for us FPL managers. We get a good 4-5 weeks to have a look at their assets. One player who we believe you must keep an eye on Kyle Walker-Peters.

KWP registered 1 goal and 3 assists last season, picking up 7 bonus points in the process. He also created 5 big chances last season, the joint second most among defenders priced £5.0 or under. Furthermore, he had 20 shots in the box, Cash and Canos were the only other fullbacks to have registered more. This makes him not only a player who can provide assists, but also threaten the goal now and again.

Southampton over the years has lacked stability in goal. Constant chopping and changing of goalkeepers have hindered them. However, with the signing of the talented young keeper in Bazunu, they might have turned a corner. With a solid shot stopper, their defense will become stronger, thereby, increasing the prospects of keeping more shutouts. KWP being the bonus point magnet that he is, he is bound to benefit from this transition.

As mentioned earlier, Southampton’s fixtures aren’t good in the initial weeks. Gameweek 6 is when they have a swing and that is when we should be looking to bring in Walker-Peters. By then we would know how the new goalkeeper has taken it to the league.

Spurs- Dejan Kulusevski, £8.0, TSB: 7.9%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Spurs ~ Kulusevski

One of the key reasons as to why Spurs turned their season around, was Dejan Kulusevski. Yes, Son and Kane were brilliant, but they were there already in the team. Kulusevski’s addition, however, gave Spurs a deadly front three any opposition would fear.

Indeed, since his debut, only five players (Kane, Son, Matip, Robbo, and KDB) scored FPL points than the Swede (99). In this time, he had 14 goal contributions (5G 9A). Only three players had more in that time. So why do managers all of a sudden think he isn’t a good option?

Having performed way better than the likes of Saka, Mount, and Luis Diaz, managers still have a doubt towards the Swedish international. This could be down to the signing of Richarlison. But, Richarlison out of all the three front positions is least comfortable on the right-hand side. So, there is a possibility that he is just a backup for the main front three which could again be Son, Kane, and Kulusevski.

Richarlison is suspended for GW 1. Kulusevski, therefore, is a sure starter for GW 1. It wouldn’t at all be a bad idea to pick the Swedish international ahead of other £8.0 midfielders.

West Ham – Jarrod Bowen, £8.5, TSB: 8.5%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Wolves ~ Bowen

FPL is a funny game. We have to pay more if we want high returns. 12 goals, 17 assists, 206 points, third most number of goal involvements. Fourth highest for points. These were Bowen’s numbers last season. Yet, we think he is overpriced this season.

West Ham aren’t hanging around in the transfer market. They have gone and signed Gianluca Scamacca, one of Europe’s most touted forwards. It is clear to see the Hammers are on the up and have high ambitions this season.

It is, therefore, not so wise to think that Jarrod Bowen is overpriced. We don’t need to give you in-depth stats on Bowen to make him part of your FPL teams. Everyone knows he had an astonishing season last time out. It is in the minds of the managers.

Out of players priced £8.5 or under (excluding Cancelo, Trent, and Robbo), Maddison was highest for points with 181, which is still a good 25 away from what Bowen registered last season. The Hammers have a good run of games after the opening day. Each of their three fixtures post-Manchester City has an FDR rating of 2. Not to forget, he scored a brace against City at the London stadium not so long ago.

Wolves – Rayan Aït-Nouri, £4.5, TSB: 2.5%

FPL differential pick for GW1 of 2022/23 season from Wolves - Ait Nouri

Last, but not the least, we come to arguably the most talked about team in the FPL community. Indeed, Wolves have had an attractive pre-season, scoring goals left, right, and center. The Black country side has been playing with a new 4 at the back formation, and looking formidable as an attacking unit.

Ait- Nouri has been bombing forward down the left flank, getting an assist in the process. In the absence of Semedo, the full-back is pretty much nailed to start in the initial weeks of the season.

The young full-back was among the best players for the Midlands side last season. His tally of 0.49 bonus points per 90 was second only to Hwang among his compatriots. Furthermore, his goal involvement per 90 was only bettered by Jimenez, Hwang, and Podence, among his teammates.

Wolves have a good run of games in the first six gameweeks, with 4 of the games having an FDR rating of 2. Given the fact that Wolves are ever reliable defensively, it would be wise to go into the opening fixtures with a Wolves defender in your teams.

To be honest, there isn’t much to choose between Jonny and Ait-Nouri, it is like a flip of a coin. However, I believe that Ait-Nouri has the edge as he is also on set pieces.
