Premier League Players Who’ll be Missing the 2022 World Cup

The 2022 world cup will be held in the middle of the 2022/23 Premier League season & in this blog, we’ll see the list of 30+ premier league players who’ll not be going to the world cup and instead getting a nice break during the middle of the season. We’ll also cover the impacts on each of the 20 PL clubs and the best 11 from the premier league that will not go to the World Cup. Note: It’s only the players who’s national teams have not qualified for the World cup and the list doesn’t involve players that might not be potentially picked in the WC squad.

  • November 21st: World Cup starts
  • December 2nd: End of the group stages
  • December 3rd: Round of 16 begins
  • December 6th: Round of 16 ends
  • December 9th&10th: Four Quarterfinal games
  • December 13th & 14th: Semifinals
  • December 17th: 3rd place game
  • December 18th: World Cup finals
  • December 20th/21st: Carabao cup fourth round(Return of English club football)
  • December 26: Premier League resumes

Premier League players not going to the World cup are now expected to have a 41-day break during the middle of the season.

Players who’ll miss the 2022 Fifa World Cup

Mo Salah, Egypt, Liverpool

Mo Salah will miss the FIFA World cup in Qatar

2021/22 Premier League golden boot winner will not be going to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after Egypt failed to beat Senegal in the playoffs. Salah’s side lost to Senegal on penalties after both the sides for level after two legs. Egypt also lost the Africa cup of nations on penalties to Senegal in Feb which made it a double break for Salah and Egypt. Although Salah not going to the World cup is welcome news for Klopp and Liverpool with the attacker now expected to get a good break during the middle of the season.

Mohamed Elneny, Egypt, Arsenal

Mo Salah’s national teammate Mohamed Elneny(Arsenal) who signed a contract extension with Arsenal will also miss out on a WC spot.

Erling Haaland, Norway, Man City

 Erling Haaland will miss the FIFA World cup in Qatar

One of the most talented youngsters in World football right now, Haaland will not be playing in his first world cup after Norway failed to qualify for the tournament. Haaland has been in sensational form for Man City and the break will be a welcome sign for Pep and Man City as his star player will be getting a much-needed break. This could also mean Pep would play him a lot more until the world cup break which is what all of the 80% plus FPL managers who own him in FPL would want.

Martin Ødegaard Norway, Arsenal

 Martin Ødegaard will miss the FIFA World cup in Qatar

Haaland’s national teammate and Arsenal captain, Martin Ødegaard(Arsenal) will also miss out on his first FIFA World Cup this year. The other players from norway who’ll not be at the WC include Ajer(Brentford), M. Elyounoussi(Norway), K Klaesson(Leeds) and Hjelde(Leeds)

Andy Robertson, Scotland, Liverpool

Andy Ronbertson will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Robertson has been an ever-present figure for Liverpool over the last few years and is one of the most important players for Liverpool under Klopp. Robertson’s Scotland lost to Ukraine in the playoffs and missed the chance to go to the world cup which gives him a nice little break during the season. Klopp has another good news with Robertson’s deputy Kostas Tsimikas(Greece) also not going to the WC after Greece failed to qualify.

Riyad Mahrez will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Man City star Riyad Mahrez will not be going to the World cup after Algeria lost to Cameroon on away goals in the World Cup playoffs. Mahrez had played only one game before in the world cup which was in 2014 against Belgium. He has however scored 26 goals and assisted 34 goals for Algeria in his international career. It’s huge welcome news for Pep as he’ll have two of his biggest attackers not going to the World Cup and instead will be getting a good break.

Saïd Benrahma(West Ham)

Saïd Benrahma(West Ham) national teammate of Mahrez will also miss out on an opportunity to play in his first world cup and will have to wait until the 2026 WC minimum.

Luis Diaz, Colombia, Liverpool

Luis Diaz will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Luis Diaz proved to be the best January signing last season and played a crucial role in Liverpool competing for four trophies till the very end of the season. He has also started the 2022/23 season brightly but Unfortunately, Diaz failed to qualify for the World Cup with Columbia who’ll miss out on the biggest competition of world football after featuring in the 2014 and 2018 editions. Columbia’s loss is Liverpool’s gain with Diaz now getting a break when the World Cup is played later in 2022.

Wilfred Zaha, Ivory Coast, Crystal Palace

Wilfred Zaha will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Zaha who once played for England U21 and England national team switched allegiance to Ivory Coast in 2017. Zaha and Ivory Coast however did not play in the 2018 World cup and also failed to qualify for the 2022 edition. Ivory coast however played all the three previous editions in 2006,2010 and 2018. Zaha is the talisman for Crystal Palace and his absence from the World cup will be welcome news for Palace and Vieira.

Sergie Aurier(Nottingham Forest) and Amad Diallo(Man United) will also miss out on going to his first World cup.

Iheanacho, Nigeria, Leicester City

Iheancho will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Foxes forward Iheancho who played his first world cup in 2018 will miss out on this edition of the World cup after Nigeria failed to qualify for the first time since 2006. Iheanacho played 148 minutes in the 2018 WC but did not score a goal and it looks like his wait for a WC goal is going to take a while with the 2026 edition being his next chance. Leicester City will be huge beneficiaries with Iheanacho along with Nididi, and Lookman all missing out on a WC trip. The other foxes forwards Pakson Daka(Zambia) and Vardy(England, retired) will also be getting a good mid-season rest which will benefit them and the team.

Dejan Kulusevski, Sweden, Spurs

Dejan Kulusevski will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Spurs sensation, Kulusevski will miss the WC after Sweden failed to qualify. In the last edition of the World Cup, Sweden reached the quarterfinals and eventually lost to England. With Son, Richarlison and Kane going to the WC, Conte will be happy that one of his forwards is getting a rest during the World cup.

Jorginho, Italy, Chelsea

Jorginho will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Defending Euros champions Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing to North Macedonia in the European playoffs. Jorginho was a Ballon D’or shout last year following some amazing performances across the club and country. Italy and Jorginho missing out from the biggest football is such a shame and Jorginho admits him missing two penalties against Switzerland will continue to haunt him as it denied Italy to claim the top spot in the qualifying group which would have guaranteed an automatic spot. Italy’s loss is Chelsea’s gain in this case, with a host of other stars expected to be at the World cup, Tuchel will be happy that his influential midfielder will have a break.

West Ham summer signings G. Scamacca and Emerson Palmieri will also miss out on a WC place.

Vladmir Coufal and Thomas Soucek, Czech Republic, West Ham

Vladmir Coufal and Thomas Soucek will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Influential Hammers duo Coufal and Soucek who both play for the Czech Republic will both miss out on a World cup after the Czech Republic failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. It’s, however, welcome news for David Moyes who unlike others doesn’t have a big squad and his two key players missing out of the WC and getting a break is a big boost for him and the Hammers. The hammers will look to win the Conference League this season and the break mid-season will do the Czech duo a lot of good in what would be a grueling second half of the season with a tight schedule.

Michail Antonio, Jamaica, West Ham

Michail Antonio will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Michail Antonio who was eligible to play for England never got a call-up and decided to switch Allegiance to Jamaica in 2021, he has so far played 6 games for Jamaica in the WC qualifiers scoring three goals but he couldn’t get Jamaica to the WC, and will not instead have a good break during the middle of the season. Antonio’s national teammates Leon Bailey(Aston Villa), B. De Cordova-Reid(Fulham), J. Lowe (Bournemouth) and Ethan Pinnock(Brentford) will also not be going to his first WC this year.

Martin Dúbravka, Slovakia, Manchester United

The on-loan Manchester untied goalkeeper who plays for Slovakia, unfortunately, failed to qualify for the World cup and will now have to wait till 2026 to have a chance of going to his first World cup. Fulham goalkeeper and national team goalkeeping compatriot, Marek Rodak will also not be going to the World cup.

Matt Doherty, Ireland, Spurs

Matt Doherty will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Matt Doherty’s Spurs career never seemed like to kick on but the Irish full-back was sensational in the second half of the season after Conte trusted him with a regular place in the starting 11. His great run of form was unfortunately cut off due to a bad injury from which he’s still struggling with early in the 2022/23 PL season. Ireland failed to qualify for the World cup and Doherty will not be going to the WC which is welcome news for Conte who’ll have a lot of other defenders going to the WC including Romero, and potentially Emerson Royal(Brazil), Emerson has the on and off the Brazil squad and missed out on the squad for the Sept’22 & June’22 friendlies so it remains to be seen if he’s in Tite’s plans or not.

  • Seamus Coleman, Everton
  • Caoimhin Kelleher, Liverpool
  • Shane Duffy, Brighton
  • Nathan Collins, Wolves
  • Mark Travers, Bournemouth
  • Gavin Bazunu, Southampton

Jonny Evans, Northern Ireland

Leicester City defender Jonny Evans will also not be going to the WC as Northern Ireland did not qualify for the world cup. Evans isn’t getting any younger and this world cup break would keep him refreshed for the second half of the season. Fellow leicester CB, Ç. Söyüncü who plays for the Turkey national team also misses out of a WC trip.

Naby Keïta, Guinea, Liverpool

Naby Keïta will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Keita has slowly evolved to become a key player for Liverpool over the last few seasons. Naby not going to the World cup is good news for Klopp as the other key midfielders including Henderson, Thiago all likely to play a key role for their national team. A well-rested Keita will be crucial for Liverpool and Klopp to push for the PL title.

Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ukraine, Arsenal

Oleksandr Zinchenko will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Zinchenko and Ukraine were once step away from the Word Cup but lost in the final hurdle against Wales in the qualifying playoffs. This means the highly versatile player misses out on a trip to Qatar and instead will get a break during the middle of the season. Fellow countryman and Everton Fullback, Vitaliy Mykolenko(Everton) will also be getting a break in what will be his first full season in the premier league.

Yves Bissouma, Mali, Spurs

A solid PL defensive midfielder Bissouma who’s been linked with a move to Spurs this summer will not go to the World cup after his national team Mali failed to qualify for the World cup. The main beneficiary would be Conte depending on where he’ll end up this summer.

Joel Matip(Cameroon, Liverpool) will also be another high-profile player not going to the world cup even though Cameroon have qualified for the WC. Matip fell out with support staff in 2015 and has since not played for the national team. Cameroon football president Eto has closed the door for his return to the team, so he’s likely to miss out on a WC spot.

Chris Wood, Newzealand, Newcastle United

Chris Wood will miss the 2022 FIFA World cup in Qatar

Chris Wood missed out on a WC spot with New Zealand narrowly after they lost to Costa Rica in the final playoffs spot for the 2022 World cup. This would mean Wood gets a rest during the season. Chris Wood’s teammate Miguel Almiron is also missing out on a trip to Qatar after Paraguay failed to qualify for the world cup. Julio Enciso another Paraguayan footballer playing for Brighton also gets a break during the World cup.

Y Wissa, Congo, Brentford

Brentford attacker Wissa failed to quality for the world cup with Congo and will be getting a break during the world cup. Toney has been with the England squad and Mbemo with Cameroon squad so Wissa missing out on a WC spot is good news for Brentford. Fellow Congo national team player N Kebano(Fulham) will also miss out on a WC opportunity.

Injured Wolves forward S. Kalajdzic who is out for a long time is also a notable absentee from the WC as Austria failed to qualify for the world cup.

Zimbawean players Zemura(Bournemouth) and Nakamba(Aston Villa) also did not quality for the world cup.

Which PL Teams benefit the most from players not going to the 2022 World cup?

  • Liverpool – Liverpool will be the team that benefits the most with a host of key players missing out on going to the World Cup including Salah, Diaz, Keita, Robertson, Matip, and backup options Kelleher and Tsimikas. Generally, Liverpool are the most impacted team when the Africa cup of nations are held so it’s a reverse of fortunes for them.
  • Man City – Man City will have two of their most important players Haaland and Mahrez getting a break during the WC.
  • West Ham – The hammers will have Antonio, Benrahma, Coufal, Soucek benefitting from a break.
  • Arsenal – Arsenal will see Odegaard, Zinchenko, Elneny, and Tierney getting a break when the World cup is played.
  • Spurs -Spurs also have Kulusevski and Doherty surely not going to the World cup.
  • Leicester City – Leicester have a host of attackers including Iheanacho, Daka, Lookman, and midfielder Ndidi all missing out on a WC opportunity.
  • Newcastle United: Star striker Isak will miss out on playing in the 2022 WC.
