What is Wildcard in FPL? | FPL Wildcard Chip Explained

With a new season looming over us, it would be great for us FPL managers to sit back and take a look at the FPL wildcard chip.

The Wildcard chip is a chip that allows FPL managers to completely change their entire team from their first eleven to their bench players.

This chip is given to managers twice a season, one in the first half of the season and another in the second half.

A chip that allows FPL managers to make a complete revamp of their team is one really powerful asset that all managers have. However, not all FPL managers use this chip the right way.

In this article, we’d take a closer look at the FPL wildcard chip, we’d also see when and how we should use the wildcard chip.

FPL Rules & Basics

What is the FPL wildcard chip?

The FPL Wildcard chip is the most powerful chip in the game. It is a chip that allows FPL managers to make unlimited changes to their team without incurring any hits. This means that you can make 1-15 transfers without getting any point deduction.

This chip when used the right way, and at the right time can see you have a major boost in your rankings. One other thing that makes the chip very powerful is the fact that you can use it in one gameweek and still feel the effect of it in other gameweeks.

So, if it is played right, you’re setting up your team for long-term success. No other chip in the game allows you to do this. The triple captain chip, bench boost chip, and the free hit, don’t have any long-term effect on your team – they are played with just one gameweek in mind.

FPL Wildcard- How many times it can be used and When?

  • The Wildcard chip can be used twice a season. The first wildcard will be available from the start of the season before the FPL GW20 deadline(3Oth Dec, 13:30 PM BST)
  • The second wildcard will be available after the FPL GW20 in readiness for the January transfer window opening and remain available until the end of the season(GW38).

When is the best time to play the FPL wildcard chip?

Just like with every other chip, we FPL managers try to play the wildcard chips at a time when we can get maximum returns.

Take for example the bench boost, triple captain and free hit chips are played mostly when there’s a double gameweek. Why? This is because they are going to get more returns from those chips at that time.

We want to apply the same logic when using our wildcard chip. We don’t want to play our wildcard chip for the sake of it. But, rather we want to think of the best time to play it in other for us to get the best possible returns.

Some scenarios that could warrant the use of a wildcard

  • When you have to make more than 4 transfers in a single gameweek, then wildcarding could be your next best move.
  • Planning for future gameweeks: whether it is to completely refresh and change your squad, or it’s to get yourself in a good position to use your other chips, then wildcarding would be great.
  • And another quite common scenario is a few gameweeks after the start of a new season. You may wonder, but I only just created my team? The truth is creating a team at the start of the season is very tricky and many a times the players we select might not be performing as we expected. So, instead of doing nothing, it is ok to use your wildcard to rectify it and get in players who are performing.

What should you consider when creating a wildcard draft?

When it comes to creating a wildcard there are a few things to keep in mind; the rules and how to select players for your draft. And that’s what we’d be looking at in this part of the article.

Here are the FPL Wildcard rules:

  • Managers can’t select more than three players from a particular team.
  • Managers must work within their budget – which is a 100 million at the start of the game. and lastly,
  • You must select 15 players.

With those rules in mind, let’s now look at some things FPL managers should keep an eye on before selecting players for their wildcard drafts.

Eye test

Stats they say doesn’t tell the true story. And that’s where the eye test comes into play. If you are new in the FPL space, you might be wondering what is the eye test? It simply means watching a player live either in person or from your TV screen to see just how good he is and whether or not he is worth buying.

The eye test is very important when picking a player for your wildcard because from this you’d see how the player plays, the amount of chances created, the amount of chances he gets and how involved the player is in matches.

If after watching a player he passes the eye test, then he is one that is worth adding to your wildcard draft.

Form

The form of a player is something you want to consider before adding him to your team. If a player’s form is bad, then it’s best you stay clear and go for players who are in red-hot form.

Stats

xG, xA, xGI, goals, assists, chances created, clean sheets, and many others are good useful pieces of information that could make the decision-making process a lot easier.

And here on ALLABOUTFPL, we do that. We break down the stats of various FPL assets and suggest players that we think are worth adding to your team.

And you know what would be much better? using the eye test along with stats. If you watch a player and then take a look at their underlying stats, you’d then have enough information that would help you decide whether or not you should go for a player.

Fixtures

Before picking an FPL asset it is good to take a look at the asset’s fixture difficulty ratings. One way you can do that is directly from the official FPL website or from the app.

Remember that the point of using your wildcard is to have your team set-up for a long period of time and the best way to do that, is to select players who pass the eye test, have good stats, are on form and have easy fixtures.

There you have it our 2023/24 wildcard guide. Be sure to keep an eye on our blog as we’d be creating some wildcard drafts before the season begins.

Who from this top six will be in your team?
