Best FPL Assets to Consider from Promoted Teams | 22/23 Season

We are closing on to the 2022/23 Premier League Season and we’ll have three teams who have gained promotion from the Championship last season. Fulham, Nottingham Forest, and Bournemouth are the three promoted teams for the 2022/23 season, Fulham(2020/21 last PL Season) and Bournemouth(2019/20 last PL season) have played in the PL in recent years and are pretty well-known teams amongst FPL managers. Nottingham Forest however are returning to the premier league after a long time(1998/99 last PL season). In this blog, we take a look at the three promoted teams from an FPL perspective including their tactics, style of play, formation, expected lineup, and best FPL assets from these teams. 🏡FULHAM FC🏡

London’s oldest club are back in the Premier League after being in the Championship for a season but this time they look very well-equipped to give it a real go of staying up in England’s 1st Division for atleast another season. Marco Silva took charge of Fulham in the summer of 2021 and credit to him for doing a remarkable job of settling into life very quickly as a Fulham manager and producing results straight from the off. Silva’s Fulham were easy on the eye as they racked up 90 pts from 46 games and they were very potent as a team in front of goal, scoring a mammoth total of 106 goals. They broke quite a few records along the way and in the process won the 2021/22 EFL Championship title, which saw them gain promotion in style.

Now let’s dive into Marco Silva’s tactics & style of play and then we’ll see who are the best fantasy assets from the Cottagers…

📝TEAM TACTICS (FORMATION):

In 43 out of the 46 games last season, Marco Silva used the 4-2-3-1 formation with Mitrovic being the main man up top. He used the 4-3-3 and the 4-1-4-1 formation in the other remaining games. The Portuguese tactician mostly likes to stick with his preferred starting XI.

FPL promoted team analysis ~ Fulham style of play and expected formation for 2022/23 season

⭐STYLE OF PLAY:

  • Attacking, possession-based
  • Pressing and counter-pressing
  • Building & playing out from the back
  • Finding various ways to arrive in the opposition box

Marco Silva is an attack-minded manager who favours a dynamic style of play and loves to stick with his philosophy in any given game. While attacking on the opponent’s half of the pitch, Fulham push their entire structure very high which sees their two CB’s operating as two deep-lying playmakers in possession. Their front-footed approach under the Portuguese is to be admired but it remains to be seen how they cope up as a team at the back.

In the PL they need to be more efficient on the ball when playing out from the back as the quality of opposition is higher otherwise they’ll pay the price. In the Championship last season, Fulham conceded 43 goals in 46 games, third best defensive record behind fellow promoted teams, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest. The only criticism for Marco Silva as a manager is that he is not well known of having a good defensive side so it will be interesting to see how he builds a stable base at the back which is really important for any PL side wanting to stay up…

🧲 Key Signings:

  • João Palhinha (From Sporting)
  • Andreas Pereira (From Man Utd)

🗣 EXPECTED STARTING LINEUP:

Fulham Expected Line up for the 2022/23 Season

Fulham were linked to Leno but that deal has stalled so as things stand, Rodak should start in goal, Robinson & Mbabu/Tete as fullbacks, Tosin Adarabioyo will definitely start but I’ll be very surprised if the Cottagers don’t sign a CB to partner him. Palhinha & Reed will play in the defensive midfield position with Cairney offering a backup option. Fulham have quite a few options in the left wing position so it will be interesting to see who starts in left wing, but I feel it will be the new signing, Andreas Pereira who starts there. Manor Solomon is Fabio Carvalho’s replacement in the number 10 role. Harry Wilson on the right flank & Mitrovic up front are nailed on to start!

💰 FPL ASSETS to Consider from FULHAM FC for the 2022/23 FPL Season:

♦ Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m FWD)🇷🇸

FPL ASSETS to Consider from FULHAM FC for the 2022/23 FPL Season ~ Aleksandar Mitrovic

Mitrovic? Isn’t he a trap? Tbh, I don’t think he is. Yes, he’s had a reputation of being a trap in FPL previously but this is a different Mitrovic altogether. To be fair to him, he’s had an 11-goal & a 9-goal season in the PL with Fulham & Newcastle respectively and since we’ve already seen that he’s too good for the Championship, surely he’d love to make a name for himself in the big stage and have a 15-goal season under his belt in the PL this season and show all the doubters what he’s capable of!

He’s the first-choice penalty taker for the club and seems to fancy himself from some direct free kicks as well which is an added bonus. Mitrovic needs to have a great season if Fulham want to stay up this time around though. The only problem with Mitro is that he has disciplinary issues, so you’ll be left frustrated some weeks where he’ll end up with a 1 pointer but it would be all about patience when owning him.

♦ Harry Wilson (£6m MID)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

FPL ASSETS to Consider from FULHAM FC for the 2022/23 FPL Season: Harry Wilson (£6m MID)

The Welshman is the chief playmaker in this Fulham side. Very unselfish, darts in from the right side & always looks to find a teammate. At every opportunity, he tries to have a go at goal with his wonderful left foot as well. Takes most of the corners & indirect freekicks and is the main freekick taker for the Cottagers so at £6m he could prove to be an FPL gem this season.

He’s 25 now, was with Liverpool for 17 years(academy years included), had quite a few loan spells where he did quite well, and is at a stage of his career where he’d love to have a 15+ goal involvement season. Remember what he did at Bournemouth in the 2019/20 PL season? He showed signs that he probably belonged to the PL level at that point of time. So, 2-3 years later, you’d think he’s more equipped to play in the PL now & showcase his talent in the best league in the world.

♦ Andreas Pereira (£4.5m MID)🇧🇷

FPL ASSETS to Consider from FULHAM FC for the 2022/23 FPL Season: Andreas Pereira (£4.5m MID)

Fulham’s new signing offers great value at only £4.5m… He can play in various attacking positions but since he’s started in the attacking midfield position & at left wing in Fulham’s preseason friendlies against Benfica & Estoril respectively, he should be fairly nailed on to start. He was fantastic in the U20 World Cup way back in 2015 but just couldn’t kick on and break through the Man Utd ranks after that. He had a decent loan spell at Flamengo last season though.

Marco Silva will give him many opportunities for sure so he’d love to grab the opportunity by impressing the manager. There’s no doubt about his quality! There are quite a few players at that £4.5m price bracket who’d start most games, but I think Andreas Pereira might be one of the best, if not the best option at that price. If he has a good couple of games, he could rise in price very quickly so be aware if you don’t start with him.

👀 SOME PLAYERS WHO SHOULDN’T BE OVERLOOKED:

Antonee Robinson(£4.5m DEF)🇺🇸,

Kevin Mbabu(£4.5m DEF)🇨🇭,

Manor Solomon(£5.5m MID)🇮🇱

Robinson is an attack-minded, strong left-back who recorded 2 goals and 2 assists in 36 apps last term! The American created 41 chances, made 47 successful tackles & 61 interceptions all of which boosts his chances of getting bps when he gets an attacking return or when Fulham keep a clean sheet. But there were some rumours that Marco Silva is looking for a new left-wing back so I would be cautious and see what happens there and decide on Robinson later! Certainly one for the watchlist for now.

The new signing from Wolfsburg, Kevin Mbabu is a pacy right full-back who could be a gem if he starts ahead of Kenny Tete! He is not that good at defending situations & wasn’t nailed for Wolfsburg in the last few seasons + he’s lost his starting place in the Swiss national team recently as well so it will be interesting to see how Silva uses him. He is quite injury-prone which doesn’t help but Tete is no different too. So, if he is a 2nd choice RB behind Tete, you’d expect him to get his chance at some point. If he shows his potential then he could be a short-term punt at any point in the upcoming season!

The 23-year-old Israeli attacker, Manor Solomon is a fine addition to Silva’s Fulham! He’s known for his ball control & very good playmaking abilities. Solomon is an exciting young talent & is another one to watch in FPL!

🍒AFC BOURNEMOUTH🍒

Bournemouth are back in the Premier League after a 2 year hault! The Cherries enjoyed an amazing season in the Championship, finishing as runners-up with 25 wins, 13 draws & 8 losses in 46 games, accumulating 88 pts. The Cherries had the best defensive record in the league letting in only 39 goals & lost the fewer number of games than anyone in the division. Scott Parker joined Bournemouth last summer after he left his post at Fulham by mutual consent.

Fulham actually got relegated from the PL 2020/21 season under him but they weren’t that bad tbf. The 41-year-old Englishman helped the Cherries get promoted in his first full season in charge & has the ingredients of guiding Bournemouth to survival this season… Let us take a look at how tactically good Scott Parker is as a manager!

AFC BOURNEMOUTH ~ FPL promoted team for 2022/23 Season

📝TEAM TACTICS (FORMATION):

Scott Parker mostly used the 4-3-3 formation last campaign with that system changing to a 4-2-3-1 when in possession utilizing a double pivot & with Billing playing further up the pitch, just behind Solanke. Parker is known for making tactical adjustments various times when in need over the course of any game.

AFC BOURNEMOUTH manager

⭐BOURNEMOUTH STYLE OF PLAY:

  • Pressing
  • Possession-based
  • Passing out from defence
  • Switching play from one flank to the other quickly
  • Defensive solidity

Bournemouth are a tactically astute side under Parker & all of their players work very hard on and off the ball. They are a very athletic team with too many young players in their squad so certainly they won’t be that tired in the closing stages of a game. The Cherries look to keep possession well and control the game. It will be hard for them to replicate these in the Premier League but Parker is tactically a very flexible manager so I’d expect him to have other ideas which would be more suited to them this time around.

They were the best defensive side in the Championship last season letting in only 39 goals in 46 games. Teams will find it difficult to break Bournemouth down the way Parker sets his team up. Back in the 2020/21 season, we saw Fulham being decent at the back despite getting relegated. Fulham found goals hard to come by in the other end though, which led to their downfall. It will be interesting to see how Solanke steps up in the PL on the back of a great Championship season!

🧲 KEY SIGNINGS:

  • Ryan Fredericks (From West Ham)
  • Joe Rothwell (From Blackburn)

🗣 EXPECTED STARTING LINEUP:

AFC BOURNEMOUTH expected lineup for the 2022/23 season

The 23-year-old Irishman, Mark Travers is Parker’s first-choice goalie so he starts in goal. They have quite a few options at right back so it will be interesting to see who starts there(Adam Smith/Fredericks). Rumours going around that Nat Phillips will sign for Bournemouth on a permanent deal. If that deal goes through, then he should start alongside Lloyd Kelly at the back.

Zemura should start at left back. Either one of Joe Rothwell(the new signing from Blackburn) or the Colombian, Jefferson Lerma will partner Lewis Cook in the double pivot. Jaidon Anthony & Ryan Christie are first-choice wingers with Phillip Billing playing just behind Solanke who’ll lead the line. In some games though, Parker may opt to use Billing in a central role, so in that case the Cherries’ will shift to a 4-3-3 formation!

♦ Dominic Solanke (£6m FWD)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

FPL ASSETS to Consider from AFC BOURNEMOUTH for the 2022/23 FPL season: Dominic Solanke (£6m FWD)

Solanke’s goal scoring exploits is one of the key reasons why Bournemouth are back in the Premier League. The Englishman scored 29 goals and provided 7 assists in 46 apps in the Championship last season & he was involved in 48.6% of Cherries’ goals. He took 164 shots(119 from inside the box) both of which were team-leading totals. He has scored a couple of goals in the preseason and looks pretty sharp. He is the main penalty taker for the team. At only £6m he provides great value & is the best fantasy asset from Bournemouth!

♦ Philip Billing (£5.5m MID)🇩🇰

FPL ASSETS to Consider from AFC BOURNEMOUTH for the 2022/23 FPL season: Philip Billing

Billing as an FPL asset? Are you crazy? You might think so but I’m not joking at all. Scott Parker got the best out of the Danish midfielder by playing him in an advanced central role! Billing enjoyed his best-ever campaign last term as he scored 10 goals and supplied 10 assists in 40 apps! He also missed 11 big chances & created 13 big chances which shows that he was unlucky not to be involved in a few more goals. He’s on some set-piece duties as well so he can become a good all-round FPL prospect and at only £5.5m he’s one to watch if Parker continues to play him in an advanced role!

♦ Jordan Zemura (£4.5m DEF)🇿🇼

FPL ASSETS to Consider from AFC BOURNEMOUTH for the 2022/23 FPL season: Jordan Zemura

The 22-year-old Zimbabwean enjoyed his breakthrough season last term helping Bournemouth secure promotion! The marauding left full-back scored 3 goals, provided 1 assist, and kept 15 clean sheets in 33 apps which shows his points potential at both ends of the pitch! 7 big chances created & 2 big chances missed suggests that at only £4.5m, he needs to be on your watchlist at least for now! He missed a fair few games due to injury last season otherwise his numbers would’ve been even better.

👀 SOME PLAYERS WHO SHOULDN’T BE OVERLOOKED:

Ryan Christie(£5.5m MID)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿,

Jaidon Anthony(£5.5m MID)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿,

Mark Travers(£4.5m GK)🇮🇪

Ryan Christie has the potential to become a great FPL asset! The 27-year-old Scotsman was signed from Celtic last summer where he enjoyed great success for several years! He is a very versatile player on the attacking end of the pitch but Parker mostly used him on the right wing where he is most suited to play! Double digits for attacking returns last season + on some set pieces as well, one to keep an eye on for sure!

Like Zemura, Jaidon Anthony also had a breakthrough season last term where he scored 8 goals & provided 7 assists in 45 apps! He provided 71 key passes and took 61 shots which shows that he can be a valuable fantasy asset too!

The young Irishman, Mark Travers enjoyed an amazing season in the Championship last term keeping 20 clean sheets in 45 apps and winning the 2021/22 EFL Championship Golden Glove award in the process. He made 122 saves & made no errors leading to a goal which shows how perfect a season he had.

After becoming the 1st choice gk for the Cherries after Parker joined, he has become one of the vital member’s of the squad. As discussed earlier, Parker’s team can be tough to break down at times, so expect a fair few clean sheets and save points from him!
Costs only £4.5m in FPL & on the back of his breakthrough season I expect Travers to back it up in the tougher league and have another good season under his belt!

🌲NOTTINGHAM FOREST🌲

Nottingham Forest are back in the big time after 23 years!!! They beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 in the play-off final to secure promotion. Massive credit should go to Steve Cooper for resurrecting the Tricky Trees! Cooper took charge of Nottingham Forest back in the September of 2021, replacing Chris Hughton who managed only 1 win in their first 8 games at the start of last season which saw them being rock bottom in the standings.

The 42-year-old Welshman came in and transformed the ethos of the club. All the players gelled together straight away and Forest became a winning machine since then! Under him, Forest averaged two points per game in 38 matches which is the best in the division since he took charge. Forest also knocked out Arsenal and Leicester in the FA Cup before losing to the eventual winners, Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

Now let’s see what formation Cooper used and how he instilled the winning mentality in this group!

NOTTINGHAM FOREST ~ FPL promoted team

📝TEAM TACTICS (FORMATION):

Cooper usually sets up his Nottingham Forest team in a 3-4-1-2 formation which looks like 5-3-2 without the ball and often like 3-4-3 with the ball. On some occasions, he also deployed the 4-2-3-1 formation. His players are very comfortable with on-field positional interchanges, especially in the final third!

⭐ STYLE OF PLAY:

  • Possessional play
  • Fast transitions & quick counter-attacks
  • Defensive solidity

Steve Cooper has always been a manager that likes his team to dominate the ball & control possession. In the middle of the park, one central midfielder is deployed as a box-to-box midfielder while the other hangs back and acts as a deep-lying playmaker. The number 10 is allowed to roam into free spaces, especially to help cause overloads on the flanks with an attacker or two and charging wingbacks on either flank. On the flanks, the wing-backs bomb forward with purpose when on possession and get back to defensive work when they’ve lost possession.

Cooper’s Forest were the best counter-attacking team in the Championship last season. They move the ball extremely incisively and their movements are very smooth. Without the ball, they look to cramp the centre of the park to leave spaces for the wing-backs to cause havoc on the flanks! They were the second-best side defensively last season conceding 40 goals in 46 games. Overall, they are a very well-drilled side!

🧲 KEY SIGNINGS:

🗣 EXPECTED STARTING LINEUP:

Forest needed to have a great transfer window and boy they have. More than 10 new signings sees them having a solid balanced core of players which can challenge to finish atleast mid-table! Henderson is expected to start in goal. Hennessey is a solid backup goalie to have. Back 3 should consist of Worrall, McKenna and the new signing Niakhate with Steve Cook and Biancone as backups.

Biancone can also play in the right wing back role as he’s shown in the preseason but Neco Williams is expected to start in that position. It will be interesting to see who starts between Toffolo and Richards when the latter gets fit. Both are equally very good left-wing backs.

In the midfield, the new signing from Huddersfield, Lewis O’Brien(replacement for Garner) will act as a deep-lying playmaker. Yates was deployed as a box-to-box midfielder last season so Cooper will stick to that. Former Newcastle man, Jack Colback is a backup in midfield and in the left wing-back position. Lingard will operate in the number ten role where he will be allowed to roam into free spaces to help cause overloads on the flanks. Awoniyi and Johnson are expected to start up front! Surridge & Lyle Taylor as backup options in the forward positions…

💰 FPL ASSETS to Consider from NOTTINGHAM FOREST FC for the 2022/23 FPL Season:

♦ Brennan Johnson (£6m FWD)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

After having a breakthrough season last term, Brennan Johnson was handed his first international cap for Wales and it didn’t take him long to impress as he scored a couple of goals in the UEFA Nations League last month. At only 22, he was one of the main reasons why the Tricky Trees did so well last season, his pace, agility, and stamina all were key components to him winning the Championship’s Young Player of the Season award.

He only attempts around 2 shots per game but his clinical finishing is one of the biggest attributes he has. He took quite a few penalties last season in Grabban’s absence so it will be interesting to see who takes them this season now with Awoniyi joining the club from Union Berlin. He takes some set pieces as well so at £6m, he’s one of the best budget forward options in FPL and I can see him backing up his last season’s form by having a good season in the PL!

He’s equally good on both the full-back positions so that versatility should help him play most of the games! He’s very attack minded and shoots quite often so at only £4m he offers a variety of routes of getting fantasy points!

♦ Jesse Lingard (£6m MID)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Forest have pulled off an extraordinary signing by securing the services of the 2020/21 season West Ham hero, Jesse Lingard. Moyes got the best out of him by playing Jesse in the roaming number 10 role and he ripped up most of the defences in the PL during the second half of that season. He scored 9 goals and supplied 5 assists in 16 appearances during that loan spell. Forest play in a different style to West Ham’s but they play in a system which he could thrive on too. Zinckernagel had a great season playing in that free number 10 role last term so I expect Lingard to have a super season as well. At only £6m, I feel he’s one of the best if not the best FPL asset around that price bracket!

👀 SOME PLAYERS WHO SHOULDN’T BE OVERLOOKED:

Taiwo Awoniyi(£6m FWD)🇳🇬,

Scott McKenna(£4.5m DEF)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿,

Dean Henderson(£4.5m GK)🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

The 24-year-old Nigerian international, Taiwo Awoniyi enjoyed a great couple of seasons in Germany with Union Berlin after securing his permanent move from Liverpool in the 2020 January transfer window. He was one of the first signings which Cooper and his backroom staff made this season and it looks to be a shrewd bit of business. He scored 15 goals & provided an assist in 31 apps in the Bundesliga last term while he also missed 16 big chances which shows he could’ve maybe had a 20-goal season in the German top flight if he was a bit more clinical. He is expected to line up alongside the talented Welshman, Brennan Johnson upfront & it will be interesting to see how they link up play together and build the chemistry between them.

Scott McKenna is a tall 6’2” centre-back who is an ever-present in the Forest backline. Very good in the air, the former Hibs man scored 2 goals & supplied 3 assists last season which shows his attack potential from set pieces! Not the best fantasy option with Neco Williams and the left-backs offering more attack potential but when fixtures turn & you look for a differential then he could be a good asset to own.

Dean Henderson was one of the best GKs in FPL when he was on loan at Sheffield Utd. The England shot-stopper earned 160 FPL points in the 2019/20 season with the Blades, keeping 13 clean sheets, making 97 saves, and providing a cheeky assist. He was good for bps as well… A similar sort of thing is expected from Henderson as Forest will be set up well at the back by Cooper so I feel he’s one of the best £4.5m GKs in the game!

Conclusion of our FPL Promoted Teams Analysis:

Out of all the 3 teams, Nottingham Forest have the best team on paper. But tbf, all these 3 teams are equally capable of staying up in the PL this season. 3 very different managers with different philosophies and different ideas so they certainly won’t be easy to beat! This is by far one the toughest season’s to predict the 3 teams who’ll get relegated… We’re in for yet another cracker of a Premier League season!!!
