FPL Forwards(£6.0-6.5) sorted by FPL Points. Stats from FFHub. Subscribe for more stats, fpl planners, etc at 50% discount here.
  • The great Dom Solanke (6.5) leads the way in terms of shots, shots on target, and even xG over the course of last season. To be noted though, he played much more than most of the forwards on the list and his per 90 stats do not tell such lofty tales, the Cherries frontman continued to tick along and be their talisman as the season panned out.
  • The same reasoning as above aided Solanke’s creativity numbers as well, more minutes saw more big chances created.

We shall take a look at the per 90 metrics to further understand the dynamics, as quite a few names are in line to get more minutes in the upcoming season.

£6.0 & £6.5M FPL Forwards Comparison Table (Per 90 stats)

FPL Forwards(£6.0-6.5) sorted by xG/90. Stats from FFHub. Subscribe for more stats, fpl planners, etc at 50% discount here.
  • As expected, we see Solanke fall to last place in terms of xG when sorted by per90 stats. The often injured Anthony Martial (6.5) leads the way followed by young starlet Evan Ferguson (6) and Man City’s world cup winner Julian Alvarez (6.5).
  • Danny Welbeck (6) and Martial lead the creativity metrics followed by Solanke. Welbeck’s role under De Zerbi has been one of a link up attacker rather than an out & out striker, hence the numbers correlate.
  • Ferguson and Welbeck are on top for shots in the box per 90, with 2.56 and 2.33 shots respectively, further accentuating Brighton’s attacking prowess under Roberto De Zerbi.
  • Alvarez, Martial and Awoniyi (6.5) are top for BPS, closely followed by Ferguson yet again.
  • Solanke, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (6) and Awoniyi are top for %xGI (Expected goal involvement percentage), but Calvert-Lewin drastically drops out of the top 3 when it comes to actual %GI (Goal involvement percentage), highlighting Solanke and Awoniyi’s talismanic nature whereas it also puts into the limelight, Calvert-Lewin’s rustiness in front of goal last term due to perpetual injuries.

Now let’s take a look at some of these strikers individually to understand their impact with regard to our FPL teams.

Best FPL Budget Forwards (6.0-7.0 Million)

Yoanne Wissa (6.0)

BrentfordTOT (H)FUL (A)CRY (H)BOU (H)NEW (A)EVE (H)NFO (A)MUN (A)

The main attraction towards Wissa, and rightly so, is due to his teammate and Brentford talisman, Ivan Toney’s long-term ban. While Mbeumo (covered in the mid-priced forwards article) is the popular pick because of his attributes and penalty duties, Wissa is being majorly overlooked.

During 5 games without Toney last season, Wissa played an average of 82 minutes, scoring 4 goals and providing 2 assists, racking up an xGI(per90) of 0.7. This got him an average of 8.4 FPL points across the 5 games, showcasing his hunger of being involved in the goals.

His minutes are almost as secure as Mbeumo given that Kevin Schade is usually deployed when Brentford plays a back 4, whereas Wissa and Mbeumo both tend to start in either scenario, a back 4 or a back 5.

To top it off, the Bees have a great run of fixtures to start with, including an opening day visit from ‘Attacking Ange’s’ army, who don’t seem to be the most secure defensive unit out there. This is followed by Fulham, Bournemouth, and Everton in the next five.

For our FPL teams, Wissa could be that budget enabler in a 3-5-2 along with Haaland or even as a third striker in a 3-4-3 if one decides to get another midfielder instead of Mbeumo. While the underlying numbers are decent, even the eye test doesn’t flatter to deceive, with Wissa always trying to get in a position to accumulate chances. Depending on team structure, Wissa could be a great cheap striker option to start with.

My rating: 3.5/5

On his day DCL is a proven Premier League goal scorer but the English forward has been struggling with injury issues for the last two seasons. In the 20/21 season he registered 22 goal contributions(16 goals + 6 assists)

DCL has been slowly building fitness and has played 45 minutes each in Everton’s last two pre-season friendlies scoring a penalty in the 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon. Historically, Dyche system always prefers a tall marauding number 9 who is strong aerially and we have seen players like Ings, and Wood all thrive under him. In DCL, Dyche has a well-suited player for his system and if he doesn’t have any further injury issues, he’ll definitely go on to have a great season.

No player scored more headed goals or had more headed attempts than DCL in the 20/21 season

Update:

Dyche has added that it’s unlikely that DCL is ready to start GW1 and he is still building up on his fitness. Not an option for GW1, but should come into FPL reckoning once he’s fit and back!

Julian Alvarez £6.5m

Man CityBUR (A)NEW (H)SHU (A)FUL (H)WHU (A)NFO (H)WOL (A)ARS (A)

Alvarez has started all the Pre-season friendlies for Manchester City and looks to be in good fitness. KDB’s injury concerns, City not signing a Mahrez replacement, his versatile nature(can play anywhere in front 3 and also as a #8 on the right) only pushes up Alvarez’s expected minutes. Alvarez is 4th for FPL points/90 minutes last season only behind Haaland, Wilson and Kane.

Stats from Fantasy Football Hub. Subscribe for more Stats, Player Comparisons, FPL planners, etc at 50% discount here.

In spite of playing only 1448 minutes, the Argentine registered 9 goals and 3 assists last season. in fact, only Haaland had a better xG per 90 and BC per 90 than Alvarez among Man City assets.

Alvarez started only 13 games last season. However, 7 of those starts came when KDB wasn’t in the starting eleven. In fact, Alvarez started 7 out of the 8 games the Belgian didn’t start.

FPL Points/90 among Forwards Last season:

  • Haaland- 8.82
  • Wilson- 7.50
  • Kane- 6.95
  • Alvarez- 6.38

We are not still sure if KDB is fit enough to start games as he had only one sub appearance in Pre-season(in the community shield) which increases Alvarez expected minutes. With Jesus ruled out for GW1 and Nkunku a possible doubt, Alvarez might be a risk worth taking even as a place-holder for these strikers in the first few weeks.

  • Bournemouth Average Goals Scored: 0.97
  • Bournemouth Average Goals Conceded: 1.86

Big Dom was one of the best budget forwards in FPL last season scoring 130 points with 6 goals and 10 assists. But he had 16 goal contributions from an xGI of 13.5 and had an xG/90 of only 0.26. Solanke also has picked up only one assist in pre-season from 190 pre season minutes.

Secondly, the fixtures look a bit tough for the cherries to begin the season with Liverpool, Spurs, Brentford, Chelsea, Brighton and Arsenal from GW2-7.

Solanke could be an early avoid and then should come into reckoning once the fixtures turn for Bournemouth. We also have to keep in mind that the cherries new manager Iraola is a pretty attacking mined coach.

Danny Welbeck £6.0m and Evan Ferguson £6.0m

Brighton youngster Evan Ferguson is argubly the biggest talent Wat Brighton currently. The young forward picked up 10 goals and 2 assists in 25 appeances(All comps) last season. In the PL he had 19 appearences(6 goals, 2 assists) and picked up 6.15 FPL points per 90 minutes averaging 3.41 shots in the box, 1.61 shots on target, 2.56 shots in te box, 0.85 big chances and 0.51 xG per 90.

It’s widely expected that Feguson will feature more regualrly for Brighton this season. But he faced competion from Welbeck last season and it doesn’t look like Welback is number 2 yet which means the cmopetiton for Welback and Ferguson for the one striker spot will continue atleast in the beginning of the season.

Welback himself had 6 goals and 5 assists in the PL last season, but he played double the minutes when compared to Ferguson making 31 appearances and his /90 numbers look considerable lower than Ferguson.

Although Brighton have exciting fixtures to begin the season the lack of clarity who is the clear first choice amongst the two means it’s an avoid for now. But once we know if Ferguson is nailed then he becomes an incredible player from an FPL pov and offers great value at 6.0 Million.

Note: In the last pre-season game before the season, Welbeck started ahead of Ferguson as the striker.

Our Rating: Ferguson: 3/5, Welbeck: 2.5/5

The Nottingham Forest man came to life after the world cup, scoring 6 goals in 11 starts + 3 off the bench appearances. While he significantly overachieved with regard to his xG (2.66), Awoniyi started looking more comfortable in the Premier League.

The fixtures to start with are not the greatest, even though they host newly promoted sides, Sheffield United and Burnley, it is sandwiched between visits to Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City.

The signing of Anthony Elanga (5.0) from Manchester United could provide some much-needed impetus in their attack, especially with worrying rumours of Brennan Johnson exiting the club. Morgan Gibbs White will be a vital cog for their survival hopes and his creative brilliance could also prove beneficial for Awoniyi who will be at the end of his final third passes more often than not. Once the fixtures become favourable, he can be considered but I would tread with caution at the start.

Note: He’s also injured currently and has not featured in the last two pre-season games. Nothing more has been said regarding his absence which is concerning.

The Hammers Dilemma- Ings, Antonio (6.0 apiece)

Both Ings and Antonio are priced at 6.0 Million in FPL this season, both of them have been FPL stars in the past. However, the hammers have been struggling towards the end of the pre-season facing heavy defeats against Rennes and Leverkusen. They are also the only PL club not to make any signing having lost Declan Rice earlier in the window. The emergence of Mubama(4.5 Million forward) further adds to the striker rotation concerns with the talented Hammers youngster picking up 3 goals in pre-season.

Ings vs Antonio(Since Ings Full Debut in GW25)

Stats from Fantasy Football Hub. Subscribe for more Stats, Player Comparisons, FPL planners, etc at 50% discount here.

From an FPL point of view, the Hammers duo of Ings and Antonio are an avoid as we don’t know who’s the first choice currently. Mubama(4.5 Million forward) tho could emerge as a 3rd forward option.
