Best West Ham FPL Players | West Ham Preview

Hi everyone, I’m Dan (@FPLFella), and as you probably know I am a massive West Ham United fan, and sometimes get some interesting pieces of information about the Hammers. West Ham United FPL preview

The last two seasons have been very successful for the hammers where in 2020/21 they finished 6^th to qualify for the Europa League and this was followed by one of the best seasons in the club’s history finishing 7^th in the Premier League but also having an incredible run to the Semi-Finals of the Europa League beating Seville and Lyon before being knocked out by Eintracht Frankfurt.

There has been minimal transfer activity in the Summer 2021 and January 2022 windows, however, West Ham have made 4 key signings so far as of 29th July including Nayef Aguerd a Centre Back from Stade Rennais, Alphonse Areola has been made a permanent signing after his successful loan period in the 2021/22 season, the third signing to date is the young Flynn Downes who joins from Swansea and finally, the long wait for a new striker comes to end with the arrival of Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo where he scored 16 goals in Serie A.

West Ham United Pre-Season

On the pitch West Ham have not had the greatest of pre-seasons with 2 wins, 4 draws and a 3-1 defeat against Rangers, however off the pitch have added some depth to the squad with Areola signing permanently from PSG, Aguerd joining to strengthen the back line, Flynn Downes to provide some cover in the central midfield positions and the long wait for a new striker has ended with the addition of Scamacca.

8 July v Servette FC (A) – WON 2-0 (Alese, Mubama)
12 July v Boreham Wood (A) – DRAW 1-1 (Benrahma)
12 July v Ipswich (A) – WON 2-1 (Zouma, Chesters)
16 July v Reading (A) – DRAW 1-1 (Vlasic)
19 July v Rangers (A) – LOSS 1-3 (Soucek)
23 July v Luton Town (A) – DRAW 1-1 (Soucek)
30 July v Lens (A) – DRAW 0-0

Injuries/Absences/Fitness issues

Going into the season West Ham have a few issues related to late returns from holiday and injuries. New signing Aguerd picked up an ankle injury which has required surgery and will be out until at least October. There are also doubts over Craig Dawson’s fitness and returning from last season’s injury Angelo Ogbonna requires minutes before he is ready to return to Premier League football.

New signing Gianluca Scamacca is yet to feature in a West Ham shirt having been held back in London for the trip to Lens to work on his fitness but should hopefully be ready for the curtain opening vs Man City.

Due to their Nation’s league involvement, many players returned back to pre-season late including Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen but they too should be ready for the opening day.

West Ham Fixtures

West Ham’s opening 6 fixtures are a mixed bag where they open the season against last season’s champions Man City at home, before a trip to Nottingham Forest in game week 2 with Brighton the visitors to the London Stadium in game week 3. Following these 3 fixtures are tricky games against Villa (away), Spurs (home) and Chelsea (away).

West Ham have a decent run of fixtures between GW8-GW11 where they play Everton (away), Wolves (home), Fulham (Home) and Southampton (away) before trips to Anfield in GW12 and Old Trafford in GW14.

West Ham Formation and Tactics

Last season West Ham played most matches with a 4-2-3-1 formation with a pivot of Soucek and Rice. There have been rumblings of us moving to a three at the back however I believe Moyes will start the season with a similar lineup that produced a lot of success last season. With the addition of a new striker, Moyes could look to play two up two with Antonio and Scamacca but it may take some time for the Italian to get up to speed and be ready for a place in the starting 11.

Unfortunately, the injury to Aguerd has meant that he won’t be pairing Zouma at the start of the season and so will look to Craig Dawson at the back. The reliable Czech Vladimir Coufal will start as our right back with Aaron Creswell starting as left back despite Moyes looking for a replacement in this position.

I believe Moyes will use 3 of Bowen, Fornals, Lanzini, and Benrahma favouring Bowen and Fornals over the other 2, behind Antonio.

Analysing positions

Goalkeeper

West Ham best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Areola

With the permanent appointment of Alfonse Areola, I believe he will slowly become David Moyes’ number 1. I wouldn’t want to take that risk at the start of the season however if you are looking to wildcard early on and Areola has featured heavily then he would be a good option at £4.5M.

With West Ham again in 4 competitions this season goalkeeper duties will be shared but it remains to be seen which will get the nod in the Premier League.

Defence:

West Ham best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Coufal

West Ham’s back four is far from stable at the moment with Coufal and Zouma the only two that are nailed for starts. With Dawson’s fitness and Creswell’s place in jeopardy I feel like West Ham’s defence is currently one to avoid but consider later in the season, especially once Aguerd is back from injury and a new left-back is recruited. However, the aerial presence of Dawson is not one to completely ignore.

Midfield:

West Ham best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Bowen

The obvious choice in West Ham’s midfield is Jarrod Bowen after a successful season in 2021/22, Bowen will want to start quickly to give himself a chance of being on the plane to Qatar in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Other notable FPL assets include Pablo Fornals who at £5.5m could be a great player for your FPL teams if you aren’t convinced with Neto at the same price. You could also consider Benhrama who after a slow start in 2020/21 in Moyes’ team improved last season with 8 goals and could have had many more. I would be concerned about his minutes under Moyes as the Scot likes to bring him off early in games or start him on the bench.

Forwards:

West Ham best FPL assets for the 2022/23 season ~ Scamacca

Forwards are where West Ham are fairly light in comparison to other Premier League teams with Antonio their only striker last year.

The Hammers have added Scamacca to the squad for this season and for me his price point is brilliant if he impresses in the first few gameweeks and could be a great asset come the middle of the season with Italy not having qualified for the World Cup he will receive a lengthy break before the season resumes.

Vladimir Coufal £4.5m
Pablo Fornals £5.5m
