FPL Player in Focus: Jack Grealish | Time to Back Grealish in FPL?

Jack Grealish has been attracting some attention in the FPL community during the preseason. In this article, I explore why the Englishman could be a viable asset that Managers should consider. Article penned by (rey_qur) for The FPL Way.

Grealish’s first season at Man City

It’s fair to say that Jack’s performances last season were quite underwhelming. With a huge 100m transfer to his name, and a previously stellar season with AVL, a lot was expected in his debut season.

From an FPL perspective, it was a poor season from the talented midfielder. Just the 6 returns from 26 appearances.

If you were to look at the previous seasons with Aston Villa where Jack returned with 33 G/A over two seasons, it was well below what FPL Managers would have expected from the Englishman.

Grealish is not high on the projected points either over the first 4 fixtures. Not difficult to argue with considering his poor form last season.

Why could Grealish be the hidden gem in FPL this season?

So the question is “why” do I feel Grealish could be the hidden gem we all search for at the start of every FPL season?

In this blog, we take a look at Grealish and make a case for him to be a viable FPL option to consider from Man City for the 22/23 season

1. Jack’s last 4 appearances of the season started to peak my curiosity. His movement and positioning were much more advanced, whilst also being a lot more direct with his dribbling (rather than cutting back and slowing play).

The shots and touch maps also lean towards more aggression in offensive areas which garnered a goal and an assist.

2. With the sales of Sterling and Jesus respectively, this opens up a lot more opportunities for Grealish to start and dictate matches as he did previously for AVL.

3. The preseason matches

Performance vs Club America

The above image shows his direct dribbling which was a trademark during his time at AVL, which attracted MCI to spend the 100m. This is one of the multiple examples of Jack’s dribbling during the match.

Grealish continuously ran into space to receive the ball. Traits of a confident player. There was a level of comfort in Jack when I was watching the game. He seemed to understand the best movements in order to get in the most penetrating areas of the pitch.

This is what should excite FPL managers. Grealish was making the inside runs to try and score off the ball. This is behaviour that was rarely seen last season, another example of understanding his role in the team and the LW expectations.

Performance vs Bayern

Jack setup the goal for Haaland by making the aggressive run into space and trusting he’d receive the ball from KDB, and then squared the ball for an easy tap-in.

Another example of attacking the area from the left off the ball and nearly scoring from a header. I sincerely hope this is a trait that Grealish continues on a consistent basis.

The below is another example of Jack’s confidence in dribbling, despite the number of defenders. The midfielder was constantly a threat from the left wing with his direct dribbling.

How Grealish fits in my FPL team

With his inclusion, I still feel there’s a good balance of assets, whilst having the ideal price points for squad flexibility.

Concluding thoughts on Grealish as an FPL asset

In his second season, I believe Grealish will be a much better asset for FPL managers to consider. The preseason form has really propelled the midfielder up my watchlist.

The risk will always be the dreaded “Pep Roulette” as Grealish will be battling with Mahrez, Foden, and perhaps Alvarez as well. However, this will always be the case with top teams, strength in depth.
