Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million) | 22/23 Season

Ishaan @hobbes3103 2021/22 OR: 3754 here, In my first pre-season article on all FPL forwards, I had based the analysis from the standpoint of Team Structure, and building on that logical premise in this article, we will look at the “Mid-Priced Midfield” options, specifically in the £6.0 Million to the £7.5 Million range. The Team Structures that provide for most flexibility & coverage are such that they require a minimum of 2 of these £6.0 Million to the £7.5 Million Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders.

The hallmark of any successful FPL season, as the community legends would tell you, is to fix the premium ‘permanent’ signings and spend our precious 1 Free Transfer (FT) per week on the Mid-Priced options to jump on & off potential hauls as and when the fixtures turn or the form shows. For example: Transferring IN & OUT Benrahma, Mbeumo, Smith-Rowe, and Gallagher last season at the right times would have got you 200+ points over the season at a £6.0 Million budget.

Of course, knowing the right time to make this transfer is easier said than done hence the purpose of this article is to identify which FPL Midfield options in this price range should or should not make it into our GW1 FPL team so that we can give a boost to the start of our season, and then take it from there.

Bear in mind that with the 4 Unlimited Transfer periods effectively on offer, this season is one of short-to-medium term thinking and this article will approach analysis accordingly. We will be going teamwise so you can also scroll down to your team of choice for a better understanding.

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders in the £6 to £7.5 Million Range

ARSENAL

Arsenal last season were a totally fixture-dependent team – they were flat track bullies against teams in the second half of the table whereas Arteta preferred a more withdrawn, defensive setup versus top 8 teams.

In pre-season, Arsenal have looked extremely fluid and a team that finally understands what their manager wants from them. This represents a departure from last season exemplified in the blank look evident on the players’ faces in this “high performance” team talk from Arteta clipped from the “All Or Nothing” documentary

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Martinelli

Two vital cogs in their attacking machine, Martin Ødegaard (£6.5 Million) ) and Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0 Million) both fall in our price range of interest. Gabriel Martinelli could be an explosive FPL asset, has a high ceiling and has had a full pre-season to improve his fitness levels to hit the ground running. Some facts from the 21/22 season –

  1. He was 1st for No. of Big Chances in this price bracket
  2. He was the Arsenal asset with the highest rate of big chances
  3. He was 2nd only to Jarred Bowen (who is now 8.5m) for minutes per xG
  4. He was 1st for SiB (Shots in the Box) among all midfielders in this price range
  5. NPxGI  (Non-Penalty Expected Goal Involvement) was a very healthy 0.52
  6. Penalty duties – In GW38, he took & scored the penalty despite Saka being on the pitch. However, Saka won & took the penalty in the pre-season friendly vs Sevilla.

With new signing Gabriel Jesus making a nuisance and occupying the opposition CBs, it could leave space free for Martinelli to get into threatening areas. Case in point, this below image from the pre-season friendly v Chelsea. Gabriel Jesus chases down & almost nicks the ball off Chalobah, who recovers at the last minute. Had Jesus managed to dispossess Chalobah then Martinelli was through on goal. In any case, this passage of play immediately led to Arsenal’s 1st goal scored via Jesus.

Below is the screengrab from Arsenal’s 2nd goal, with Martinelli spotting Odegaard’s run and splitting Chelsea’s defence wide with a perfectly weighted throughball.

A word of caution here: Arteta has also explored a pre-season formation where Nketiah & Jesus start together and that has linked up well. With Saka being undroppable, it makes Martinelli the fall guy in this formation, and some Arsenal fan forums have suggested he is one bad performance away from being dropped. Even then, his price point means that he is easily movable to a similar-priced midfielder in case any bandwagon emerges or even a 2-move transfer to a premium defender such as the likes of Reece James, Ben Chilwell or Ruben Dias. Even so, this season is primed for Martinelli to make an impact and take it up a notch.

Ødegaard’s role in this setup is primarily to ‘assist the assister’ with occasional late arrivals into the box (Arsenal’s 2nd goalscorer in the screengrab above). He is a safe but not explosive FPL asset. In my opinion, there are 5 better Arsenal FPL assets than him at the moment. In fact, Martinelli had triple the xG per 90 as compared to him in the 21/22 season.

Martinelli has 1G and 4A in pre-season whereas Ødegaard has 1G.

Emile Smith-Rowe (£6.0 Million) and Martinelli were interchanged for the same LW position last season but given ESR’s fitness concerns and him not having started a pre-season match yet, it is safe to say that he is not a threat to Martinelli for the 1st few weeks.

New signing, Fabio Vieira (£6.0 Million) has just started light on-field work while recovering from a minor fracture and till we see him on the pitch in Arsenal colours, the jury is out on how Arteta integrates him into the setup and he is an avoid.

ASTON VILLA

Philippe Coutinho (£7.0 Million) is currently the most owned asset in this Price Bracket with 18.7% ownership. That is an unexpected outcome since he had such an underwhelming end to the 21/22 season blanking in 10 of his last 12 gameweeks.

The only factor in Coutinho’s favour are Villa’s initial fixtures with the defensively suspect Bournemouth & Everton up in the first 4 gameweeks. This bodes well for Coutinho as last season he was a flat-track bully with 3 of his hauls coming vs Leeds twice & Southampton once.

If we consider his fixtures coupled with the fact that he is nailed + has had a full pre-season + is possibly on penalty kicks despite missing his pre-season penalty vs Leeds (side note: if you haven’t watched Illan Meslier’s double save, please do so ) and there is probably some sort of logic to his relatively high ownership.

Emi Buendia (£6.0 Million) is the other Aston Villa asset in this bracket but with Gerrard really hyping up & throwing his weight behind Coutinho in his pre-season comments, it is not yet known how Buendia will be integrated into the setup since Gerrard prefers one creative mid behind the striking duo upfront. Even if he prefers two, it seems that Leon Bailey (5.0m) has played himself into contention with his stunning pre-season form.

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Trossard

Leandro Trossard (£6.5 Million) had a barnstorming end to the 21/22 season with 4G and 3A in the last 6 gameweeks after Graham Potter shifted to a 3-4-2-1 and put Trossard in a hitherto unknown LWB role from where he could cut into the box while Cucurella created an overload by providing the overlap. The sample size is too small to know if the formation & the consequent success will be replicated this season but it could definitely be a punt worth taking since the fixtures are so good for Brighton – in the first 9 GWs they do not play any of last season’s top 5.

An additional note here is that Brighton have started their last 3 friendlies in pre-season in the aforementioned formation with Trossard playing LWB from where he scored a hattrick and put in a MOM performance with 3G & 1A in BHA’s 5-1 drubbing of Espanyol on 30th July.

CHELSEA

All of Gallagher, Jorginho, Pulisic & Ziyech (£6.0 Million) are at this price point but they are a firm avoid since all of them with the possible exception of Jorginho, do not make it into Chelsea’s strongest 11.

CRYSTAL PALACE

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Zaha

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0 Million) enters the 22/23 season having clocked his personal best goals tally in the 21/22 season and would have also clocked his personal best assists tally had it not been for the wasteful finishing of the Palace strikers. His Expected Goal Involvement (xGI) of 0.49 was the highest he has ever recorded since his debut. Added to the fact that he is Palace’s talisman involved in close to 50% of his side’s goals, is nailed, is on penalties & has racked up 5G & 4A in 4 pre-season matches should make him a shoo-in to our team except for the fact that Palace have an awful start to the season playing ARS (H), LIV(A) and MCI (A) in the first 4 gameweeks.

Crystal Palace have also had a split pre-season where half their first team were on tour and the other half where training separately at Selhurst Park so it remains to be seen whether this has any impact on the cohesiveness of the team off the block.

EVERTON

No Everton assets fall in this Price Range.

FULHAM

Harry Wilson (£6.0 Million) had an excellent season in the Championship in 21/22. Both his creative metrics of 18 BCC (Big Chances Created) and Key Passes Per Game of 2.6 ranked at the top but as is with newly promoted teams, it is not known whether these stats will translate to a similar level in the Premier League. There are better assets in this range.

LEEDS

Leeds have a raft of options in this price range. Their new signing, Luis Sinisterra is (£6.5 Million) whereas old boys Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Dan James are all (£6.0 Million). However, I wouldn’t go close to Leeds’ assets now despite them having a favourable start to the season for the simple reason that Jesse Marsch’s playing style and identity are not clearly known at the PL level.

Last season he took over in February and termed his new role as a ‘band-aid project’ meaning his entire goal was to survive from match to match and save Leeds from relegation. It will take some time to see how well he has imposed on the current squad his favoured tactics of counter-pressing & breaking lines with vertical passes into the final 3rd while at the same time integrating new signings such as Marc Roca & Sinisterra to replace the departed Kalvin Phillips & Raphinha – two players absolutely integral to the Leeds team since they achieved promotion.

LEICESTER CITY

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Barnes

Harvey Barnes (£7.0 Million) is not a bad pick at his price with Leicester having free midweeks with no Europe involvement albeit a middling Fixture Difficulty in the initial part of the season – they play ARS (A) CHE (A) MUN (H) in the 1st 6 gameweeks. Barnes has looked extremely sharp in pre-season scoring 3 goals and clocking the most minutes of any Leicester asset. He finished the 21/22 season strongly as well with 6 returns in the last 4 gameweeks.

A word of caution here since Brendan Rodgers frequently likes to switch his formation, often playing with a back 3 and two strikers in Vardy / Iheanacho / Daka up top and Maddison behind them. Barnes becomes a rotation risk in this formation and even if he plays, his numbers drop significantly compared to if Leicester play in a 4 at the back formation.

Personally, if one can afford the 1.0m rise up to James Maddison then he is far and above the Leicester asset to go for. He has been in scintillating form ending the 21/22 season with 73 points in the last 8 gameweeks, a number only bettered by the much more expensive Kevin de Bruyne & Heung-min Son. Maddison is central to everything Leicester does, he is on all set pieces and is the asset to go for.

Youri Tielemans (£6.5 Million) has been linked with a future away from Leicester and is not someone to consider in your GW1 team with better options in around.

LIVERPOOL

MANCHESTER CITY

Gundogan (£7.5 Million) – He is a minutes risk with Bernardo Silva being preferred in that midfield two along with Rodri, with competition for places being further increased with the arrival of Kalvin Phillips. He has also not got a single minute in the 2 pre-season friendlies that Man City have played.

Bernardo Silva(£7.0 Million) is a reliable starter in Pep’s 4-3-3  if last season is to go by – he started 33 of 38 games . He hit a purple patch around GW10 and was a popular transfer in but his low minutes per xGI caught up with him and he had only 6 attacking returns from GW17 to GW38. De Bruyne’s playing reduces Bernardo’s impact since De Bruyne is given the free, roaming, creative role reducing the influence of Bernardo Silva who has to play in a more withdrawn role.

There is some conjecture that Bernardo can also play in the RW position where he has played before since Mahrez + Haaland together wouldn’t be an effective setup for the counter-press and Alvarez is new to the league. But till he actually starts playing there with accompanying numbers to show for it, his fantasy appeal does not stand out.

Rodri (£6.0 Million) is a player who is as nailed as can be working within the assumption of Pep roulette. He scored a solid & bankable 127 points last season, in fact, he scored more goals than Salah in the last 5 GWs of 21/22 but is definitely not the City asset you would block a spot for.

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Grealish

Pre-Community Shield, Jack Grealish (£7.0 Million) has played 157 of 180 preseason minutes for Manchester City at LW and looked to be the odds-on favorite to start GW1 with his main competition for the spot – Phil Foden, unable to travel to the US due to his vaccination status and thereby not getting a single minute of pre-season in him.

However, with both Grealish and Mahrez (£8.0 Million) hooked for Foden (£8.0 Million) & Alvarez (FWD) after 58’, Man City now have 4 available wingers for 2 spots. It is uncertain which player Pep will finally pick & therefore, it would be wise to steer clear of  Grealish at least for GW1.

Prior to the Community Shield match, this wasn’t the case with Grealish putting up a strong case for inclusion basis his performances in the two prior pre-season matches. He was not a regular starter for Man City last season with only 22 of 38 starts. While he had only 6 returns to show for, it has to be noted that he created a chance every 36 minutes for Man City. That puts him at 2nd spot for most chances created per 90 among all PL midfielders – after only De Bruyne.

He was simply outstanding versus Bayern Munich in the pre-season friendly, picking up the MOM award. He completed 7 of 9 dribbles, created 7 Chances out of which 2 were Big Chances, had a 92% pass accuracy, and assisted Haaland for the solitary goal of the match.

With Cancelo playing as an inverted LB who cuts in on his preferred right foot, Pep has always liked his LW to maintain width and stretch the pitch. It would thus be assumed that Grealish would be doing the same and therefore be away from the action. The reality is far from the truth as evidenced from the screengrabs below.

Time and again, Grealish found himself in promising positions close to goal and at one instance he was also in the 6-yard box attempting a header! These are all encouraging signs and if he strikes form for the Cityzens, could be an absolute bargain at 7.0m playing for the foremost attacking side in the league.

It is a known fact that “Second Season Syndrome” is a very real thing for all Pep Guardiola signings wherein they embed into his philosophy in their 1st season before really making a mark in the 2nd season. I fully expect Grealish to continue this trend, and Man City’s kind opening fixtures where they play 2 promoted sides in their first 6 certainly help and therefore, it would be interesting to see which wingers Pep ultimately picks and monitor their gametime security.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Any statistics from last season for Manchester United are completely irrelevant since Erik Ten Haag represents an evolution in their style of play and hence it would be better to analyze United’s options on the strength of their pre-season so far.

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Sancho

Jadon Sancho (£7.5 million) on pre-season evidence is slowly becoming the 1st name on Manchester United’s teamsheet. He missed the friendly vs Atletico Madrid with a slight illness but in the previous 4 games, he scored 3 goals, ranked 1st among all United players for expected Assists (xA), 2nd for crosses, 2nd for key passes, 3rd for SiB, and 1st for dribbles completed. He has also set up a good understanding with Dalot at RB and looks to be the fulcrum through which United can channel their attacking play.

Marcus Rashford (£6.5 Million)

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Rashford

had an appalling season in 21/22 and ended up having a 3.0m price drop this year. He has come into pre-season a different player evidenced by his physical transformation as well as his determination levels – full of running & chasing down loose balls in the pre-season friendlies. He has netted 2 goals in pre-season, played a key role in both of  United’s goal in their last pre-season match vs Villa, and although not up to top speed yet, he is getting there. His capability when on song is not in doubt and if he can get there, would be excellent value for his price point.
While the news that Ronaldo is back at Carrington may threaten Rashford’s minutes ( Martial could compete with him for the LW slot), we know that Ten Haag will take time to integrate Ronaldo into his patterns of play, and hence Rashford looks safe for the 1st few gameweeks at least.

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Eriksen

Christian Eriksen (£6.5 Million) is an all-time FPL great, creating the 3rd most chances per 90 with Brentford. However, at Brentford he was the main playmaker whereas his fantasy potential with Manchester United remains unknown since he is yet to debut with them – Atletico Madrid will be his 1st match in red. Scouring fan forums it seems that Ten Haag might play with 2 No. 8s – Bruno & Eriksen and till he settles into the system, Eriksen is a wait-and-watch.

Depending on budget or team structure, it is definitely not a bad shout to go with either Sancho or Rashford. The FDR puts Manchester United’s fixtures at middling difficulty with only ARS (H) and LIV (H) being the top 6 sides that they play in the first 8 gameweeks whereas all other teams finished 8th or below last season. Manchester United’s midfielders represent excellent value and we can expect their price to sky-rocket if they show the same form that they have in pre-season.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Saint Maximin

Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5 Million) is the creative centre of Newcastle but somehow, I have always got the impression that he flatters to deceive. From the 21/22 season as well as from pre-season, it is evident that ASM links up and has a great understanding with Callum Wilson and his FPL returns are directly proportional to Wilson staying fit.

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ Bruno Guimares

Bruno Guimaraes (£6.0 Million) is the epitome of a perfect box-to-box midfielder – he has aggressive pressing, excellent awareness to make those late runs into the box as well as positional intelligence to track opposing runs. However, his xGI is decidedly poor and it is not yet known if he will be taking up the advanced positions he was found in at the end of the 21/22 season when he became an instant FPL hero with that brace versus Leicester in DGW33.

Joelinton (£6.0 Million) converted into a midfielder from a striker by Eddie Howe does not have any FPL pedigree whatsoever.

7 of Newcastle’s first 10 fixtures are rated “2” on the FDR (1 being the easiest) with Man City, Liverpool, and West Ham being the only top teams they face and Brighton, and Palace being the other good defensive sides. Any Newcastle asset, if chosen, would be a great differential option if they return.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Jesse Lingard (£6.0 Million) having found himself in the cold back at Manchester United, after his wonderful loan spell at West Ham has finally secured a permanent move to Nottingham Forest. He could just be what NFO require since their manager, Steve Cooper prefers a 2 striker formation. With both the forwards stretching the opposing Centre Backs, Lingard could be the one making those runs into the penalty area unmarked, much like he did at WHU and hence could prove to be the bargain signing of the summer and a great FPL option. For now, he is on a firmly wait-and-watch list though, with further evaluation needed around GW8.

SOUTHAMPTON

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million ~ James Ward Prowse

James Ward-Prowse (£6.5 Million) might be the best free-kick taker in world football (not my words but Pep Guardiola’s) but is definitely not the most attractive option in fantasy football (my words). He is the ultimate set and forget option – nailed for 90 minutes, on all set pieces, on penalty duty, and finished in the top 10 among all midfielders in FPL for the 21/22 season. However, in a season that is broken up into 4 mini-seasons courtesy of the WC & Unlimited Transfers at play, it is better to go points chasing than picking a set and forget at this price point. The fixtures are also quite awful – they face 3 of last season’s top 6 in the first 5 gameweeks.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Lucas Moura (£6.0 Million) has recently signed a one-year contract extension at Spurs but is seen as more of a squad player according to Spurs’ fan forums. He has dropped down to 3rd in his favoured RW position behind Kulusevski and Richarlison and some fans believe that he may also be converted into a RWB by Conte, in much the same way that he converted Victor Moses into a RWB at Chelsea. This uncertainty severely dents his FPL appeal.

Further Read: Best Spurs FPL Players | Spurs Preview | 2022/23 FPL Season

WEST HAM UNITED

Said Benrahma (£6.0 Million) represented the early season bandwagon in this price range in the beginning of the 21/22 season. This time around he has played 65.6% of WHU’s preseason minutes with Fornals and Antonio being the only attackers having played more minutes. With West Ham’s fixtures though – they play 3 of last season’s top 4 in the first 6 gameweeks and the lack of security of his minutes, Benrahma at this stage would be a risky pick.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

Hwang Hee-Chan (£6.0 Million) might get a look in now with Raul Jimenez injured for a month but all of Podence, Neto & Morgan Gibbs-White at 0.5m less represent better options. Wolves have put up very poor attacking numbers in 21/22 (they have a median xG and xGA which rank in the bottom 5 of all PL teams) and taking a punt on a 6.0m asset from such a team who does not have the security of minutes is a significant risk.

Conclusion on the FPL Midfielders in the £6 to £7.5 Million Range

Having gone through each team in detail, which midfielder(s) you choose to include depends on your team structure, your strategy for the start of the season, and ultimately your risk appetite since by definition, this is a price point that comes with inherent unknowns.
