Best Premium FPL Defenders (£6.0+) for the 2022/23 FPL Season

The evolution of fullbacks has not only changed how modern football is played, but it has also had a tremendous impact on how we look at the five defensive spots in FPL. Playing formations with 5 at the back is no longer a cocky differential move; it’s the “template”.

While there is a strong case for stacking all the five spots with premium defenders and cutting corners elsewhere, one might stick to the old ways of having a balance of premium and budget defenders. Regardless of the choice, we all need 2-3 elite FPL defenders to keep racking up the points. In our latest article, FPL Insights ranks the five best premium FPL defenders (£6.0+) for the 2022/23 FPL Season.

Best premium FPL Defenders (£6.0+) for the 2022/23 FPL Season

Here are the 5 best premium defenders to own (in order), based on some of their key stats from the 2021/22 FPL season. The stats have been converted to “p90 minutes” to make it a fair comparison for Reece James and Ben Chilwell, who did not play enough minutes due to injuries. Assuming they stay fit, there is no reason why they should not have the same playing time as the other defenders on this list.

Final Score – It is a combined score using the three key metrics (all p90) listed in the last three columns of the table. The maximum possible value of this is 1. This would happen in an event when the defender in question leads in all the 3 stats.

While the list itself might not be new information, it may well be surprising not to see Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5) at the top and even more so seeing him lose out to Ben Chilwell (£6m). However, it is tough to argue that for the six gameweeks Chilwell played (GW7 to GW12), only Mo Salah bettered his points tally. (BTW Reece James says Hi!)

While the sample size for Chilwell is small, given how well Reece James (£6) went on to perform (in his own injury-ridden campaign), gives enough evidence of fullbacks flourishing under manager Thomas Tuchel. With ongoing pursuits to sign CBs, it looks like Chelsea will retain their playing style and formation from the season gone by. Assuming both Chilwell and James stay fit, there is a lot to be optimistic about the pair.

Best premium FPL Defenders (£6.0+) for the 2022/23 FPL Season ~ Trent Alexander Arnold

As for Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5), there isn’t much to say really. He finished with 208 FPL points which were the highest among defenders. He leads the charts among defenders for expected assists (10.9) and actual assists (12), which is no surprise for a player of his quality. He continues to perform season after season and offers no evidence of slowing down.

Regardless of what the opinion might be, Chilwell, Trent, and James would want to make sure that they put the best foot forward in the games leading to the World Cup. The competition would only benefit their football and FPL managers (of course!)

Best premium FPL Defenders (£6.0+) for the 2022/23 FPL Season ~ Cancelo

Coming at fourth, João Cancelo (£7) was a treat to both watch and own in FPL. He had the highest number of shots on target (23) and expected goals (5.74) across the season among defenders. He was just behind Trent for FPL points at 201 and one of only five players to hit the 200 mark. While one can never be 100% certain, it does look like Cancelo will be starting most of the games in the Premier League.

Best premium FPL Defenders (£6.0+) for the 2022/23 FPL Season ~ Andy Robertson

At the last spot, we have Andy Robertson (£7). Robertson had a slow start to the season due to injury but did more than enough in the second half of the season to finish with 186 points (3rd among defenders). Between GW20 to GW38, he scored 117 points (highest among defenders). He finished the season with 11 assists (only one behind Trent). While he is not the first choice when it comes to premium defenders from Liverpool (TSB – 10%), he can match anyone on the list for FPL returns. If you are tempted to go differential at the start of the season, look no further!

If we could, we would have all 5 of them in our teams. Unfortunately, it won’t be good for the stability of the team and I hope this article helped you clear out some dilemmas while selecting 2 or 3 out of the exceptional pool of talent.
