FPL Player in Focus: Mason Mount

The 8 Million Midfielder price point has been one of the most discussed topics in FPL during the preseason. With a litany of options, we seem “spoilt for choice” in regards to viable, high-performing assets. A player that seems to have not gotten the attention within the community is Mason Mount. The midfielder scored a respectable 169 points, which included 11 Goals & 11 Assists from just 32 Appearances. Therefore, Mason averaged a return every 1.45 Apps, satisfactory returns for any asset.

The Englishman has been a consistent performer throughout his FPL history, but perhaps lacks the “explosiveness” that Managers look for in mid-premium assets.

Using data from the whole of last season, Mount predominantly played as the RW (Right Winger) in a 3-4-3 formation for Chelsea. What really intrigued me is the positioning around the pitch during the season.

In most “wide players”, the instruction would be to stay quite restricted positionally. However, Mason had the license to be more free in his movement which assisted attacking situations for his team. This can also be referenced by his average positioning which is more in the ilk of a “Number 10”, thus responsibility in being a main source of creative plays.

The touches also echo the aforementioned points of floating into different areas in order to dictate offensive scenarios.

With an average of 2.4 shots per game, and being more measured in his shooting decisions, Mason certainly backed his performance metrics with a solid FPL score.

Performance vs Udinese (Preseason)

During the game vs Udinese, Mount started as the LW in a front 3. Again, showing his flexibility in roles for the team.

Below, I will share some examples of his effectiveness during the match.

In the above phase of play, Mason was sharp with a one-two and drove into the attacking space, and ultimately set up an opportunity for a teammate that was squandered. Mount showed superb direct running and dribbling which created this opportunity for Chelsea.

If he is able to continue with passages such as the above, the chances for excellent FPL returns will increase for owners.

I expect the front 3 of Chelsea to be fluid during games, thus Mount taking a central spot during this attack is not a surprise to me. Of course, being closer to the goal means higher return potential, a behaviour I will keep a firm eye on during the season for Mount.

This example excites me the most in regards to Mount’s explosive potential. During this phase of attack, Mason ran aggressively into the central position (from the left wing) to score an easy tap-in from the cutback cross. If the midfielder continues this trend, he can be an extremely explosive asset that FPL managers must consider.

I feel Mount is one of the key players in Tuchel’s squad. He has consistently played to a high standard in all roles that have been given to him. With Tuchel also experimenting with a 4-3-3 formation, Mason can easily switch to a central position and perform consistently.

Concluding thoughts on Mason Mount as an FPL Asset

As a footballer, I have always held Mount in high regard. He rarely puts in a poor performance and has starred in key games for Chelsea since firmly establishing himself in the First XI.

He also takes most of the set pieces which have resulted in assists, therefore another attribute to attract potential owners.

However, my hesitancy comes down to three key points;

Chelsea have been very busy in the transfer market (buying & selling), thus it may take time to establish a team dynamic with so many changes to the squad.
I will limit myself to one CHE asset, my preference is Reece James as I think he is the more explosive option and 2m cheaper.
More enticing 8m options. Diaz and Saka are the players that have set roles within their respective teams. I expect each of them to return better then Mount based on the expansive football that Liverpool and Arsenal play.
