After 5 seasons of pissing half a billion pounds up the wall on short-term, overpriced and over-the-hill player, the chickens have well and truly come home to roost at Goodison Park. Before I give some hot takes on our frankly limited squad, I want to equip readers with context about why Evertonians will give Frank Lampard more than a fair crack of the whip for this upcoming season.
From the outset of the 21/22 season, many of us Evertonians knew the fella in charge would not make it through the season. Many of us did not want Benitez, those who did were few and far between but it would be fair that most match-going fans were of the opinion, “Well, he’s here now. Let’s get behind him”.
I didn’t. I couldn’t. We had not been able to attend a football match for 18 months. When the chance finally came we had a man at the helm who caused division within the club, waved goodbye to James Rodriguez, and replaced him with Solomon Rondon.
I wouldn’t take my seat until Z-Cars had finished and that useless blow-hard had disappeared into the dug-out.
Nonetheless, I was not blinkered to the financial constraints placed upon him. Demari Gray for 1.7m and both Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic arriving on a free underlined just exactly what kind of season we were facing.
Another issue was with a fan base so split on his appointment and so partizan that when Benitez inevitably had a bad run he would find himself up shit creek without a paddle.
Our ill-advised owner kept backing him publicly through interviews with Sky Sports’s Swish Tony, Jim White all while Benitez reportedly managed to push out the Director of Medical Services, Danny Donachie, and Director of Football, Marcel Brands. He froze out Lucas Digne, eventually selling him to Aston Villa before himself finally getting the bullet.

A Cloud Lifted
When Benitez left, it was like a dark cloud had been lifted from the stands. We knew we were in trouble but at least that internal fan-base division had gone and we could rally around the lads whoever was appointed.
Roll forward for what seemed like forever as the list of potential managers got smaller and smaller and eventually, Frank Lampard got the job.
For as much as we Evertonians bemoaned the football at times Ancelotti and Benitez they both had a blueprint that our squad could follow; defend deep, knock it long and wide, and get it into DCL.
Frank’s initial mistake was not recognizing the limitation of our squad and tried to have them play further up the pitch and play out from the back. Other than beating an awful Leeds 3-0 away from home we were utterly toothless. Mina being out for long spells meant we relied on Holgate, one of the worst defenders in the division at passing alongside a shell-shocked Michael Keane. In front of them a rotating patchwork of Allan, Gomes, Doucoure, and Donny Hide and Seek.
Weak as anything. You can have all the width in the world but with a developing Mykolenko and an aging captain, a ball popped over the top or a runner between the lines and we were torn apart.
Add to that the lack of height and a calamity of defending…. well, you get the picture.
But Frank adapted. That’s the main message. He dropped the line more deep, packed the midfield, and tried to have us create through Gray, and Gordon centrally with width from the fullbacks.
Blood, thunder, and a bit of running around! We can get behind that. We started arriving early, welcoming the players as they arrived by lining the streets. Started waiting by the training ground to cheer them off to the away matches. By the time the Crystal Palace match arrived the streets were full, blue smoke filling the sky and singing for hours before kick-off. Magic!
Pre-season Everton Summary:
- Arenal 2 – 0 Everton
- Everton 0-4 Minnesota United
- Everton 4 – 2 Blackpool (Dele Alli brace, Mykolenko and Ben Davies)
- Everton 3- 0 Dynamo Kyiv (DCL, McNeil brace)
New Signings
- James Tarkowski
- Dwight McNeil
- Idrissa Gueye (tbc)
Everton Formation
3-4-3 / 3-4-2-1 is what we have seen pre-season with the exception of the 4 – 0 drubbing at Minnesota United when Everton went 4-3-3. The main issue is personnel, we do not have enough central midfielders or forwards for that matter now with DCL injured.
We look solid with Tarkowski in the backline. The armband can be on anyone but make no bones, on the pitch Tarkowski is the captain. The graphic below assumes Mina will be fit. He won’t be. It will be Keane, Tarko, and Godfrey.
Attack and Defensive Data
I do not consider the full season 21/22 data to be that much value when it comes to predicting Everton’s performance over the upcoming season. We have sold Richarlison who got us the goals in DCL’s prolonged absence towards the back end of the season. We have Tarkowski in at centre half, the first reliable organiser of a back line since Phil Jagielka left us. Irrespective of any other transfer, it’s clear we are going to be conservative home and away.
Our away form was appalling last season. I suspect this season we will be out to work hard, and keep clean sheets both home and away with Frank looking to bring on Dele in the second half of most matches to make an impact.
McNeil should nail down a position fairly quickly. For me, Gordon does not produce enough end product and I would hope that the extra competition will spur the likes of Gray and Gordon on.
Iwobi at centre midfield will surprise many but he works hard and is disciplined enough to hold his position and he like to make forward passes. Assuming Gueye lands I suspect he will get in or at least offer a challenge to Allan.
Patterson over Coleman will happen over a season. Initially, Patterson will take the wing-back berth ahead of Coleman who has yet to return to full fitness on the eve of the season starting. If anything this helps Patterson’s development. He has looked a little naïve defending in a 4 at the back so it’s the best of both worlds.
One weakness at the back could be the space in behind Mykolenko. A lot of the attack is down our right-hand side. That leaves a lot of space for him to cover over on the left and I would expect Vinagre will be quite active. McNeil will help and I note that Dele drifts in when playing on the left and if he makes his way into the starting 11 it may end up with a 3412 alongside DCL.
Everton Set Piece Takers
- Gordon and Gray are on free kicks. I expect McNeil will get in one some too.
- DCL is on penalties.
I would be interested to see who is on penalties in DCL’s absence. Gray potentially but there’s nothing at the time of writing to confirm.
Best Everton FPL Options
Patterson – 4 Million
2.7% owned, basically, if Neco Williams is sold in droves you’ll be on a 3.8m defender. Patterson will have a good month to stake a claim to a starting role. Coleman is not getting any younger so 4 Million is a bargain.

Pickford – 4.5 million
The England number 1 in a world cup year will be doing all he can to keep his position. I do not expect Everton to score many goals this season but I expect our formation will force a lot of shots from distance. Potentially we are looking at saves points and bonus points if we keep a clean sheet.

Mykolenko – 4.5 Million
Myko is getting into shooting areas more regularly. He’s grown in stature towards the last few months of 21/22 and his shooting has been quite notable and he arrives late into the box. If we can get a bit of momentum then he is one I will move on but probably not until GW13.

One to Watch
Dele – 5.5m. Dele can be creative but moreover, it’s his ability to find space and has a decent rapport with Gordon and Gray. His movement sparks the other player’s movement and including Rondon. If he can get regular game time Dele could become an essential player for Everton in a season where goals may be thin on the ground.
DCL update:
Lampard said: “We are assessing Dom’s injury. No timeframe has been confirmed and we are pretty sure what level it is so we are hopeful it is not long-term.
“We’ll miss him for Chelsea. He was looking in great physical condition and was training really well. It was a freak injury in training, which does happen. It’s a shame but we have to find the solutions to keep ourselves strong without Dominic before he returns.”
Frank Lampard on DCL injury from the official Everton Website
The other striker Rondon is suspended for GW1 due to the red card he picked up against Brentford towards the end of last season.
Everton Fixtures (first 8 weeks)
I would swerve Everton perhaps with the exception of Pickford for the reasons outlined above.
GW3 to GW5 is an okay short run if moving away from say Villa, Wolves, or Newcastle but it’s not appealing until GW13.
Verdict
The Old Lady is rocking and we are backing the lads all the way.
No game will be easy at Goodison Park this season irrespective of the opponents. Unlike last season, where as early as October our defenders and midfielders were ball watching in the opposition half waiting to be beaten by a simple through ball, this season we will expect the effort they put in from the moment Frank took charge with the added steel of Tarkowski.
We need a forward. If we can get that over the line along with a central midfielder I think we will be fine. Not top half but a season of stability.
In summary, an early punt on Pickford could work out well and have Patterson for 4m to protect value. Later in the season give the other lads a viewing.
