In this piece, we will be putting forward one Underpriced FPL Asset from all of the ‘Big Six’ Premier League clubs that FPL may have priced too low and could provide great value for your GW1 team. The ‘Big Six’ include Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Spurs.

One Underpriced FPL Asset from all of the ‘Big Six’
Arsenal – Gabriel Martinelli (£6m)
Martinelli had his breakthrough campaign in the 2021/22 season and nailed down a spot in Arsenal’s XI after Christmas, in fact he started 19 of his side’s final 25 league games of the season. He has amassed solid underlying numbers, producing 0.47 NPxG+xA/90 in the 21/22 season.
There are question marks surrounding whether he will keep his place in the team or whether Emile Smith Rowe, the player Martinelli replaced on the left side of Arsenal’s attack, will be given the nod at the start of the 22/23 campaign. Pre-season will prove crucial in identifying how nailed certain players are, and Martinelli is no different in that respect.
Bukayo Saka is priced at £8m, is more nailed than Martinelli and potentially has penalties but his underlying data last season (0.46 NPxG+xA/90) was almost identical to that of the Brazilian’s. If come GW1 Martinelli looks to be first choice on the left of Mikel Arteta’s attack, it will be hard to turn him down at £2m cheaper.
Chelsea – Trevoh Chalobah (£5m)
There are a few underpriced assets at Chelsea, especially in defence. Reece James and Ben Chilwell in particular will no doubt provide fantastic value. But Chalobah is a name that is not being thrown around the FPL community very much, and he could have a case for being mentioned more.
Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have both departed the club and it looks as though Cesar Azpilicueta could be following them soon with a move to Barcelona being touted. This would leave the Blues with just three senior centre-backs in Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr and Chalobah.
Sarr is left-footed and, if coach Thomas Tuchel continues to operate a three-at-the-back system, it is unlikely he will compete with Chalobah for the same spot in the defence. Silva is nearly 38 and will need to be managed so could see fewer minutes than he got last season. Academy graduate Levi Colwill impressed on loan at Huddersfield but, like Sarr, is left-footed so is unlikely to be a roadblock to Chalobah on the right of the back three.
Chelsea will of course make signings. Nathan Ake, Jules Kounde, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Matthijs de Ligt have all been linked with the club in recent weeks, but it is worth keeping an eye on their defensive situation. If Chalobah looks nailed, being able to get into one of the best defences in the league for just £5m will provide superb value.

Liverpool – Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m)
It is hard to look past Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool’s most underpriced asset. A defender producing forward-like hauls regularly, he has consistently proven himself as one of the best players in the whole of FPL.
The youngster’s underlying numbers, especially creatively, are worthy of a much higher price. After putting up a career-high 0.36 NPxG+xA/90 in the 2019/20 season, it was hard to imagine Alexander-Arnold would better it despite his age and potential. But last campaign his figure of 0.44 resulted in his second 200+ point season in his young FPL career. And still he is priced at just £7.5m.
Of all players to play 1000+ minutes in the Premier League last season, Alexander-Arnold was 1st for xA, 2nd for chances created and 5th for big chances created (all per 90). He is a top two creator in the league, playing for a top two attack in the league and top two defence in the league.
FPL’s reluctance to price him higher has meant he is an automatic pick for most people and there is little debate to be had between him and his counterpart Andy Robertson. It would take a brave manager to back against another 200+ point season at just £7.5m.

Manchester City – Ederson (£5.5m)
FPL seem to have priced the Premier League champions pretty accurately as a whole, but goalkeeper Ederson could be a chink in their armour. Dias and Laporte, while both being nailed, come in at a respectable £6m but they offer very little attacking threat so it is hard to justify going for them when Ederson, who is probably the most nailed player in the side, is half a million cheaper.
The likes of Ederson, Alisson and Mendy were all priced at a hefty £6m this time last year and have received price drops to make them more appealing from GW1 due to most engaged managers starting with a £4.5m goalkeeper each season.
Manchester City had comfortably the best defence in the league last campaign, allowing just 27.2 xGA with their nearest rivals Liverpool on 34.3 xGA, although both teams conceded 26 goals. Kyle Walker also gives managers a cheap avenue into the City defence at just £5m but with talks of a new full-back being signed it is hard to predict how nailed he is.
Buying Ederson can allow managers to double up on City’s defence while still affording a high-quality outfield. Alongside Cancelo, the pair together cost less than Salah. With Pep Guardiola being synonymous with FPL managers for rotating key players, nicknamed ‘Pep Roulette’, it cannot be understated how precious an accessible and nailed defender in the league’s best backline is.

Manchester United – Marcus Rashford (£6.5m)
The Englishman had a hugely disappointing 2021/22 campaign, starting just 13 league games and getting six attacking returns. However with Erik ten Hag now at the helm, there is optimism that the Dutch coach can re-find Rashford’s best form.
With three consecutive seasons of 10+ league goals, including one with 17, Rashford has proved he can consistently perform in the Premier League. His NPxG+xA/90 of 0.32 last campaign was the lowest of his career on record but in the previous four seasons he averaged 0.46; peaking at 0.54 in 2019/20. These are not the numbers of a £6.5m midfielder and FPL could end up ruing their pricing if Rashford emulates his best.
The key question with Rashford is whether or not he is nailed. It is a question we do not know the answer to yet and pre-season will prove pivotal in pin-pointing his place in the United squad. Usually, we can make educated guesses if a manager has been at a club for a long enough period of time, but with ten Hag undertaking a new job we are left with a blank sheet.
One thing on Rashford’s side is his versatility. Cristiano Ronaldo has gone AWOL at United and with Edinson Cavani not getting any younger it could pave a way for the MBE to get significant minutes up front.
As with any team United could make signings but as it stands there is little competition for places in the wide positions. Rashford, Sancho, Elanga and Martial can all play out wide but the latter’s career at the club looks to be coming to an end and both Sancho and Elanga can operate comfortably on the right. The spot on the left of United’s attack could be up for grabs and if Rashford can nail it down he could be a steal at £6.5m.

Spurs – Matt Doherty (£5m)
While one Spurs wingback is getting a lot of love and attention, another one is slowly being forgotten about. Doherty has largely disappointed at Spurs since his move from Wolves in 2020, but his redemption arc in the 2021/22 season reminded FPL players of just how good an asset he can be.
The Irishman was performing at around 0.25 NPxG+xA/90 during his time at Molineux and that figure skyrocketed last season to 0.44 when he found himself in the team under Antonio Conte. The lack of minutes (875) does need to be mentioned but signs of a high-scoring player were there. Under a manager with a proven track record utilizing this formation, and in a side that boasts a top four attack in the league, Doherty’s numbers over a consistent period could be rewarding.
In the time he had in the team last season, Doherty was 1st for big chances, 6th for shots, 6th for big chances created, 1st for xG, and 2nd for xGI amongst defenders in the division who had a similar number of playing minutes or more (per 90).
One stumbling block could be the potential arrival of Djed Spence. No deal has been completed at the time of writing, but the young prodigy is being heavily linked with a move to North London and could compete for a starting spot with Doherty.
