The pricing for the 22/23 FPL season has been among the more intriguing over recent years. It feels as if the vast majority of players have come in at considerably cheaper prices than many would have predicted. As a result, a plethora of options could emerge as being more valuable than ever before. Below, we’re going to be looking at the three best value FPL players in each position that could prove to provide excellent value.

Best Value FPL players ~ Defenders
Andy Robertson £7.0M:
If his teammate Trent Alexander Arnold wasn’t so popular, Robertson would be attracting far more attention than what he currently is. As it so happens, Robertson’s ownership of 10.1% is absurdly low compared to that of his fellow fullback.
Robertson’s tally of 186 points from last season was bettered only by Joao Cancelo and the aforementioned TAA. That number also gives him a superb point per million tally of 26.5.
For those of you gambling on going without Salah, Robertson should be a cert in your squad as the third Liverpool player. Even if you’re including the Egyptian in your teams, there’s no reason as to why Roberson shouldn’t be in your squad. As it so happens, he outscored Alexander Arnold over the last 12 games of last season and there’s no reason why he can’t do the same at the start of this season. If you’re one for going for a differential over the higher-owned asset, having Robertson as your only Liverpool defender is by no means a terrible idea.

Ivan Perisic £5.5M:
This one requires little explanation. Tottenham’s new signing came in unexpectedly cheap. A seriously impressive return of 8 goals and 7 assists last season speaks volumes about the attacking threat he has developed into from that wingback position in recent years.
Couple that with Tottenham becoming a sturdier outfit under Conte likely resulting in more clean sheets for the upcoming campaign, Perisic could be of incredible value. His ownership of 40% before he has played a minute of preseason speaks to as much. He’s arguably been priced at least £0.5M too cheap, hence his lofty ownership.

Matty Cash £5M:
Aston Villa’s opening fixtures combined with Cash’s exploits in the final stretch of last season make Cash a very interesting option from the outset. A return of 4 goals and 3 assists last season, including one mega 29-point haul has seen Cash rightly come in at £5m for this time around. His 147 points, at a rate of 29.4 PPM are by some distance the best of his Villa teammates. With their opening run, it’s worthwhile to have at least one asset and at this moment in time, Cash appears to be the best option.

Best Value FPL players ~ Midfielders
Dejan Kulusevski £8.0M:
Kulusevski was one of the finds of the January transfer window and arguably the reason for Tottenham securing a top 4 finish. Having signed from Juventus, the 21-year-old made 18 appearances, 16 of which were starts. In that time, he provided 5 goals and 8 assists.
It’s broadly accepted that going with a Tottenham attacker is somewhat of a necessity given their opening fixtures and their form towards the back end of last season. Most will be looking at Heung Min Son £12.5M to fill that spot after his exploits last season in which he won the golden boot. Son returned 30 times in 35 matches, more than justifying his £12.M price tag. However, Kulusevski’s 13 returns in 18, though a smaller sample size, almost match his teammate in terms of returns per match.
The Swedish international was returning as well as any premium in the game at the back end of last season and there’s nothing to suggest he won’t be able to do the same or even surpass that. If you feel like you can invest the £4M saving on Kulusevski over Son elsewhere, it’s a more than conceivable strategy to only go with the Swede.

Jadon Sancho £7.5M:
Sancho’s highly anticipated arrival to Man United last season was met with much excitement. It’s fair to say he underwhelmed in his first season at Man United. Due to a number of factors, Sancho wasn’t able to replicate his form for Dortmund in the two seasons prior to the last one.
Towards the end of last season, however, Sancho showed glimpses of his immense quality and that has certainly carried on in preseason under Ten Hag. Though his statistics from last season don’t particularly justify his pick, if he can somewhat rediscover his form for Dortmund he may quickly be in numerous teams. Jumping on him early whilst his ownership is as low as it is could be hugely beneficial.

Josh Dasilva £4.5M:
This went largely under the radar when the prices were revealed but it came as a pretty big surprise to me to see Dasilva come in at £4.5M: When Brentford were promoted, the former Arsenal man came in at £5.5M following his 5 goals and 4 assists in the Championship in the previous season. By all accounts, those numbers didn’t do justice to how pivotal he had been for the bees in their promotion campaign. As it so happened, a combination of injuries and untimely red cards have resulted in Dasilva suffering a £1M price drop compared to last season.
Seeing as Christian Eriksen is no longer at the club, Dasilva will in all likelihood start the majority of games, though it should be noted that they have recently signed Keane Lewis-Potter who could potentially take some of Dasilva’s minutes. As Brentford’s creative hub, Dasilva may be the best £4.5M midfielder
What’s more, given his ownership is fairly low at 1.2%, he’s unlikely to suffer a price drop. With the majority on Pereira at Fulham, a few blanks may see his price take a dip but this shouldn’t be the case with Dasilva.

Gabriel Jesus £8.0M:
It says something about the way FPL priced Jesus that his ownership is currently at a staggering 59.3%, second only to Haaland. At the very least, he has been priced £0.5M too cheap and that is reflected in his ownership. Moreover, 4 goals and an assist in Arsenal’s preseason games thus far is a testament to how well he has settled at Arsenal. Now that he is out of the shadow of some of the players around him at City, it could be a real breakthrough season for the Brazilian.
What’s more, Jesus managed 16 returns (8 goals and 8 assists) in 24 starts last season for City, in a team where he was far from the focal point. Arsenal will be more reliant on him so these already impressive numbers are likely to increase significantly. If for argument’s sake he starts 35 games this season, sustaining the same return rate would see him 24 goal involvements. At £8.0M, it’s difficult to see a better value player out there.
Arsenal’s opening run is also as good as any team’s so everything points to Jesus starting really well and not selecting him could be quite costly given his enormous ownership.

Callum Wilson £7.5M
Were it not for his injuries last season and throughout his career, Wilson may have been priced higher than what he is. In a Newcastle side transitioning into one that will be looking to challenge for European places, Wilson will in all likelihood still be leading the line. Despite his time out last season, he scored 8 times in 18 appearances. In the season prior, his first for Newcastle, he provided 12 goals and 5 assists in 26 appearances. All in all, that’s 20 goals and 5 assists in 44 appearances at a rate of better than 1 return in 2. Wilson is also a near guarantee to take all three bonus points any time he scores, making his returns even more valuable.
Providing he can stay fit, he may be one of the most valuable players in the game. Even when he does get his inevitable knock, the plethora of options around that price point dictates that it won’t be particularly to come off him.

Anthony Martial £7.0M
As is the case with his United teammate, the appeal for Martial is very much based on historic success. Though his time at Old Trafford has been inconsistent, his 2019/20 campaign, in which he scored 17 times and provided 6 assists in 31 starts showcased what he’s capable of.
Unfortunately for him and for United fans, he’s failed to recreate that form. However, the arrival of Erick Ten Hag as manager appears to have given Martial’s United career may have a new lease of life. Looking somewhat back to his best, he could end up being an absolute steal at £7.0M. Rarely does a starting striker come in so cheap and from what Ten Hag has said in preseason, Martial will be going into the season as the first choice.
It goes without saying that going both United assets discussed in this article is probably overkill, even for the more optimistic United fans among you. The one you go for, if either, will come down to your preferred formation, and what you’re able to do with the rest of the team. Based on the brief amount we have seen of them under the new manager, both are very viable options as it stands.
Three goals and an assist in pre-season for Martial
The eagle-eyed among you will have picked up on the fact that there are no premium midfielders or forwards. Though they were undoubtedly among the highest-scoring players, if we’re going purely on value, the mid-priced players probably come out on top. Whilst the premium options provide the reliability of consistent returns, the mid-priced players can match them on their day, thus making them more valuable assets. In theory, jumping on and off these assets at various points of the season can actually be more beneficial than sticking with one premium. Obviously, it very much depends on how successful your transfers are, but it’s without a doubt a viable strategy
