Best FPL Midfielders at Each Price Point for The 2022/23 Season

This article is written by Sankalp Nanda(@UnderstandingF8) who finished with an Overall FPL Rank of 355 and India No.11 in the 2021/22 season. This article will be a part of 4-article series titled- “Winning the Battle of Price Points“. In the third part of the series, he will be analyzing the “Best FPL Midfielders at each price point for the 2022/23 season” which will be followed by articles on midfielders and forwards in the coming days. Read the first one: Best FPL Goalkeepers at each price point for 2022/23 Season, Best FPL Defenders at Each Price Point for The 2022/23 Season.

I remember a long time back in the middle of an interview for a consulting role, the interviewer asked me which sports I loved? Pretty quickly, I answered back, “Football”.

The next question was which role do you think the executive management plays on a football field.

I took a few seconds to think & answer- “Midfielders of course”.

When asked why, I replied, “The role of a midfielder is to set the tempo of a game, to decide when to attack or defend & to provide the tools for your forwards to score just like an executive management doesn’t actually work on its business goals but provides the tools for their employees to do so”. I am sure there can be other interpretations but I cleared my interview round successfully.

In the game of FPL, the role of midfielders has become paramount as we have seen time and again, the Top 200 & 150+ club being dominated by midfielders. A number of times our first XI structure is determined by our choices in midfield as we balance options in other areas as per the chosen midfield strength. This season though has started out differently, it seems most popular drafts are now determining their structure by their defensive choices and this has more or less limited the choices for most FPL managers as we see price points from 4.5-6.5m becoming more popular. As was the case in the last 2 articles, we will however explore every price point and look at the popular choices and whether it makes sense to go for the same.

Looking at the utmost importance of the midfielders, we decided to use a detailed FDR comparison created by our wonderful folks at Net That Haul.

Now let us start with the price points for the midfielders, given the vast range of price points ( 4.5m to 13m), I will keep the remarks shorter than in the rest of the series in cases where an analysis is not required.

Best FPL Midfielder at Each Price Point for the 2022/23 Season

13 Million FPL Midfielder

Best 13 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Salah for the 2022/23 season

The only player in this bracket, King Salah needs absolutely no introduction to FPL managers, having started his Liverpool FPL career with a record-breaking 303 points. Salah ended last season as well as a topper with 265 points and given the fixtures, seems an easy choice to start with. Salah is also a premium captaincy choice given his consistency & tendency to start the season strong. Liverpool face 2 of the promoted sides, Palace & Newcastle at home & a fresh United side in an away match that still refreshes GW 9 memories of the Havertz captainers. Don’t overthink, stick to Salah.

Winner- Salah ( by default and pure logic)

12 Million FPL Midfielder

Best 12 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Kevin De Bruyne for the 2022/23 season

A couple of seasons back KDB was considered a real prime asset of the game but given his injury issues over the last two seasons, his ownership has plummeted ( currently sitting at just 16%). KDB did end the last season on a high with 196 FPL points despite a sluggish start & a per start return lesser only to  Salah & Chilwell. With his pre-season fitness looking absolute, those 4 beautiful Wolves goals still fresh in my mind, and fixtures that only get complemented with new striker Haaland, KDB is one to watch out for.

His opponent in this price bracket is another overlooked prime FPL asset, last season’s Golden Boot Winner with 258 points- Heung-min Son with just 26% ownership. Like KDB, Son was an absolute beast at the end of the season and under Conte has looked a different beast. Spurs look behind only Liv & City in attacking FDR making this decision difficult.

In this case, however, I do recommend going with Man City midfielder KDB. They are facing 2 of the promoted sides at home in addition to Crystal Palace and apart from a tricky opening day, fixtures looks great for them. While there is a bit of concern on how Haaland’s presence affects KDB’s goal-scoring potential but given Haaland’s prone to a bit of rotation, I feel this is worth the risk. Overall in a threemium model, I think I prefer a Kane/KDB combo over Haaland/Son one.

Winner- KDB

10 Million FPL Midfielder

Best 10 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Sterling for the 2022/23 season

The two available options are Sterling & Bruno.

Ideally, both are high potential options playing in a new setup. Personally, I am very excited about Sterling’s arrival in Chelsea as Tuchel’s system and an elite winger like Sterling is a match made in heaven. Combine this with Havertz playing as false 9, Sterling can get back to his 200-point days.

Bruno is playing as a no. 10 in a 4231 setup for Ten Haag’s United. His ability to provide returns in such a role is well known, however, he has not set the stage alight so far. Given the underpricing for the two wingers, Sancho & Rashford, ideally, I would go there if I am looking for United’s player.

WinnerSterling

Note- Ideally, I would recommend avoiding this price bracket as the sub-prime options at 8m are comparable as things stand now, also for Chelsea given the sudden lack of defenders, we are still not sure about the setup that Tuchel uses, and hence, I would recommend a wait and watch approach in this price bracket.

 8.5 Million Midfielder

Best 10 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Bowen for the 2022/23 season

Bowen had a belter of a year in the 21/22 season coming out as a surprise 200+ player from West Ham United. With the signing of Scamacca almost complete, it would be interesting to see how Bowen links up with the new man & whether he is able to replicate these numbers. Overall, the FDR however points us away from West Ham, and given the attractive assets in 8m price bracket, I would recommend waiting it out than jumping on Bowen. However, I do have my eyes on Bowen on Wildcard 1 as their fixtures become more attractive and the new attacking partnership has been deciphered as well.

Winner- Bowen ( by default)

8 Million FPL Midfielder

Best 8.0 Million FPL Midfielder- Stats, Comparison and Verdict

This has been the most heavily contested price point with the following options available- Saka, Mount, Maddison, Diaz, Mahrez, Foden, Kulu

FDR definitely favors Luis Diaz who is a maverick and often found himself in the scheme of things in 2nd half of the season since his arrival. What hurts Diaz’s cause is the third Liverpool asset tag with Robertson being a strong alternative at 1m cheaper. Currently, however, Diaz remains the most popular 8m asset with 28% ownership. The only con here is we still don’t know how he combines with new signing Nunez who will occupy central areas.

Best 8 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Saka for the 2022/23 season

Saka is the second most popular asset with 17% ownership. He ended last year with 179 points and got a steep price rise as a reward. Saka like Diaz is fighting with his own team selections- the most popular of which is blue-eyed, Martinelli at an attractive 6m. Saka though retains a strong chance of penalties & given the fixtures and lack of competition at RW is a supreme choice in this bracket. To add, the pre-season-friendly form of Arsenal and the new fluidity of Arsenal, Saka might make a sensible no-nonsense choice.

Best 8 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Mount for the 2022/23 season

Mount- One of my biggest regrets of the last season remains Mason Mount & I would really like to correct it this season. Mount is a very un-sexy pick compared to the likes of Diaz & Saka but is a perfect player to target as he is very predictable with his returns. Mount’s returns against bottom 5 teams are normally exceptionally high as he plays a free-roaming role around the false 9 guy.

While Chelsea face a normally unnerving away Everton match followed by spurs at home. The fixtures on paper and attacking FDR looks extremely strong. With just 9.2% ownership, it is ideally no justice for the kind of return potential we have from Mount but we do need to accept, there is a possibility Sterling now takes away some of the glorious chances or the fact that front 3 needs a deeper look before jumping in as they did not look settled yet in pre-season. He is on my firm watchlist for sure as things stand now.

Kulu- Kulu closed last season with 99 points despite having been signed on loan in the winter window. At 7.9%, Kulusevski is a strong differential for managers unable to go to son at his premium price. The Pro here is you can go for a balanced triple spurs with Kane, Kulu, and a Spurs defender perhaps Perisic. Given the attacking FDR, we know Spurs look to be the third best-attacking team and Kulu is the perfect guy for the assists to both Kane & Son. Con- Richarlison comes into the team from GW2 onwards and Kulu is prone to early substitution.

Foden/Mahrez- At just around 6-7% ownership, City boys definitely have second-best attacking FDR to their advantage. The only con here remains Pep Roulette. To be honest, Mahrez always starts off as an attractive asset but his xMins have been a huge concern and he has plenty of off-the-bench performances as well. Foden is the logical alternative at this price point despite having not traveled to US.

While Grealish takes over and plays on LW, Foden does have the capacity of playing on the right as well. The issue with any city attacker is the fact that the combination of goals is so varied, it is very very difficult to predict who gets the bigger share in a particular match/ set of matches. This is where players like Mount and Saka ruled last season as most of the chances were either created by them or for them resulting in a good proportion of FPL points.

Best 8 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Maddison for the 2022/23 season

Maddison- A really really attractive asset given how he ended the season. The lack of Europe means we should not see a lot of rotation.

Attacking-wise, Leicester are a very good squad. Fixtures are good but get better around potential WC-1. I feel we can wait and watch on Maddison but there is every bit of chance, he explodes and carries on his strong run.

Think this is easily the most complex price point to decide on given all the players have strong pros at the same time, cons including players from the same team who are attractive as well. Ideally, given the start of the Pre Season, I feel it will be closer between Saka & Kulu who will benefit from two teams looking very solid and ready for the PL season. Between them, I would go for Saka purely coz I feel he will still end up on the losing side of many passes and will score more compared to Kulu who will perhaps assist more. Also, Saka still has no direct competition in the team, unlike Kulu who has a serious contender in Richarlison and has lower xmins.

 Winner- Saka

7.5 Million FPL Midfielder

Best 7.5 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Sancho for the 2022/23 season

Available options are Sancho &  Gundogan

I think the answer here is very easy, we need to find the right timing to approach Sancho who has been looking great in the new ETH system of 4231. Gundogan ideally should be off the bench player for Pep and has a ceiling perhaps of 120-150 points. Sancho can have returns of around 180 points and looks value addition for me.

Winner- Sancho

7.0Million FPL Midfielder

Available options are Coutinho, Zaha, Barnes, Grealish & Bernado

Coutinho- Currently the most owned player in this price bracket with 18% ownership, Coutinho dazzled FPL managers with his returns early into Aston Villa tenure. This however was followed by an array of disappointing performances that saw him benched/rested towards the end of the season. Buendia would ideally look to give strong competition to Coutinho this season as he ended the season much better. This combined with an attacking FDR that looks low and a structure that is more or less expected to continue in a similar fashion, I am not very gung ho on Coutinho at the start of the season.

Needless to say, City players are very attractive in this price bracket with a strong chance of starting in initial fixtures. Bernado (8% ownership) is perhaps the most settled City asset to go to as an FPL player, he is unreliable and can deeply frustrate you with his pre-assists or on his day, surprise you with a brace out of nowhere. Grealish (5.1% ownership) does have the higher upside of the two as his partnership with Haaland is someone to look out for. I expect Grealish to have a strong price hike during this season.

Best 7.0 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Grealish for the 2022/23 season

Zaha- Traditionally, I look at him as an FPL trap- someone I really tend to avoid getting into. Zaha has an uncanny ability to score points when you don’t have him. Overall, an inconsistent asset and given the fixtures- despite a 7.2% ownership- a NO GO for me.

Barnes- Barnes has looked really really sharp in the pre-season friendlies and this combined with a break from Europe, feels like a really good opportunity. Barnes is traditionally a player who takes a lot of shots in the box, last season he struggled with injuries, form, and rotation but I feel Leicester will be far more focused and consistent in their team selection this season. Definitely, someone to watch out for.

Winner- Grealish.

The club bias does come out here though I feel it is very close between Barnes and Grealish, ideally given the fixtures I would go min 3 weeks with Grealish before taking a final call. Barnes would be very high on my list during my WC-1 alongside Maddison.

6.5 Million FPL Midfielder

Best 6.5 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Rashford for the 2022/23 season

Some of the popular options are Rashford, Odegaard, Ward Prowse, Saint-Maximin, Trossard

Rashford- Rashford is currently the most popular option in this price bracket (13%). He is someone who like Grealish, has a strong potential price rise over this season. He comes into this season into a new system and reasonably fit unlike the last 2 seasons and hence, I feel is a logical choice at this point. At his best, he can be a solid 180+ pointer but we do need to see how well he does in a possession heavy 4231. Eriksen is also in this price bracket but considering him a huge rotation risk, I would pick Rashford from the two.

Odegaard- With around 11% ownership, managers have tried to circumvent the Martinelli/ESR dilemma to start this season with 0.5m extra. While he played much deeper last season and hence, was devoid of much FPL points- the new arsenal system as seen in pre-season has him more thoroughly involved with the attacking half of the team than the defensive half. I expect a strong uptick in the endpoints for Odegaard and hence, he is not as bad a choice- FPL Twitter would like you to believe.

Ward Prowse- A solid season of 21/22 with around 160+ points has shown JWP come to this price point with an ownership of 10%. A very very good player in his own right and easily the best free-kick taker in the league, JWP is a long-term pick in a season we want to go for strong short-term ones. Fixtures don’t help his case either for now. I would recommend not going there in your first draft and relooking at the situation in WC 1.

Saint-Maximin- Newcastle have not really added to their attack after failing to close the Ekitike deal. A lot of focus from their coach has been on supplementing the form of Saint Maximin during the pre-season. ASM is a very exciting player upfront but the same does not reflect in his end product as he often focuses on showboating rather than providing the final end product. Fixtures for Newcastle include matches with City & Liverpool as well, so for me, he is a solid avoid for now.

Trossard- Trossard has been waiting to evolve as a strong FPL asset for a couple of years now, will this be his year? Last year he ended with 141 points and was behind only  Bernado and Zaha in this price bracket by a small margin. Trossard is a form player and tends to pick up strong bonus points unlike the other midfielders in this bracket. I really like him as a pick but the only issue is I would like to jump on him after a haul rather than picking him in my first draft.

Winner- Rashford

I think all the picks at this price feel a little punty to me but Rashford stands out with a possible new manager wave to back him. ETH is a strong coach and a fit Rashford has a very high upside.

6.0 Million FPL Midfielder

Popular options are Martinelli/ESR, Buendia, Gallagher, Wilson, Bruno G, Benrahma

Not surprisingly, the exciting finish to last season has Bruno Guimares’ ownership shot up and leads this category with 16% ownership. Bruno’s exciting runs into the box made him a player to watch out for. A quality midfielder who will definitely do well on the field, the fact that he is fighting in this category against some wingers has still not dampened his owners. Very difficult to call this one out hence, I feel I will take some time before jumping on him.

Best 6.5 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Martinelli for the 2022/23 season

Martinelli/ESR- With around 15% ownership, Martinelli ship is sailing well. He has had a strong pre-season after some involvement with the national squad. In an ideal world, Martinelli would like to repeat Saka’s last season- he has the goods and potential to do it. ESR’s injury niggles mean Martinelli has a head start, combined with fixtures, Martinelli feels a really strong asset here.

Buendia/Benrahma- Both these assets are going to make a case as a differential this season. Benny faded away after a top start last season, and Buendia did the opposite. Wait and watch solid assets.

Gallagher- I love how FPL has priced some of these midfielders with late into-the-box runs at 6m. Last season, Gallagher showed how good he is with this, and am sure this season, he can build on it. However, the idea I get is Chelsea will revert back to a form of 343 before they settle down with a solid defender base. This means Gallagher will not be able to do a lot of bombing runs into the box if he starts. At 343, I feel there is going to be an if. Gallagher is a good plot for this formation. So, hold off your horses, till you see Chelsea move to a back 4.

Wilson- Harry Wilson had 10 goals and 19 assists last season and is someone I have an eye on. While a lot of us have jumped on Perreira and are hopeful to see his promising talent translate into goals, Wilson is already doing this since last year.

Winner- Martinelli

5.5 Million FPL Midfielder

Available options are Neto, Pepe, Billing, Wissa, Lewis Potter, Eze/Olise, Aaronson

Best 6.5 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Neto for the 2022/23 season

Neto is currently ruling this price bracket thanks to Wolves fixtures, and injury-free pre-season. Wolves are looking to solve their attacking crisis of last season with a move to a Lage preferred 4213/352 and it is already looking a bit more mobile. Without Jiminez, a lot of focus will be on faster-attacking transitions. To be honest, I was a bit 50-50 on Neto till I read this great piece by @FPLBlackWolf

Do give it a read to get a complete sense of what to expect from Wolves assets:-

Eze/Olise- Two of the creamiest talents that we would start noticing soon and Palace have the luxury of educating them. Olise has been looking promising in the matches he played last season but the fixtures initially have killed any logical prospects to start with Palace.

Wissa/Lewis Potter- I somehow had managed to end my season with Wissa last year, Lewis Potter has been added as another attacking option this season and he plays in the same area as Wissa. This makes it difficult for us to go for 1 player as we still are not sure who is a mid-term target. I like Brentford fixtures but no Eriksen and a competition like this needs to be looked at for a team starter.

Pepe- Just a nonstarter sadly. If he went to another middle club, he can become a very strong FPL asset, given his penchant for goals but at Arsenal, it’s an easy skip.

Aaronson- Pre-season, he was looking good. He follows up on runs, and looks to get into good positions. I think we have to take a bigger look at him but given the amazing fixtures, he is one we can jump early on if he clicks.

Winner- Neto (Too attractive a pick not to go for)

5 Million FPL Midfielder

Best 5 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Leon Bailey for the 2022/23 season

Available options are Rice, Bailey, Kante, Moutinho

An easy winner FPL-wise seems Bailey despite the risky nature of the pick. 5m this year seems to be the price point for defensive midfielders. The decent alternatives here are Baily and Elanga. Bailey has an explosive history in Bundesliga and given his pre-season form and Gerrard’s comments- think it makes sense to go there.

Winner- Bailey

4.5 Million FPL Midfielder

Best 4.5 Million FPL Midfielder ~ Andreas Pereira for the 2022/23 season

Popular options are Perreira, DaSilva, Colback

I think the easier pick is Perreira, he will be there to support Wilson as they look to create for their main man, Mitrovic. DaSilva is a good player who should give decent returns for Brentford. He had pretty good stats in Championship but he is yet to be tested in a PL environment. If we are going for 2 4.5m midfielders as I see in plenty of drafts, these two are easy picks as they are fairly attacking midfielders.

Colback- Known for plenty of yellow cards and does not have a lot of attacking involvements, so an easy skip.

Winner- Perreira

Next up, we get into the final part of this series is forwards but that for some reason hasn’t been as attractive this season as last season’s bias continues to kick in.
