Ishaan @hobbes3103 2021/22 OR: 3754 here, Another season of FPL has been launched and with the GW1 deadline less than a month away, it’s the perfect time to start thinking of which FPL forwards shall make it into our FPL GW1 team.
For ease of analysis, I’ve grouped the forwards into 3 buckets: Premium ( 9.5-11.5m ),
Mid-Price ( 7.0-9.0m ) and Budget ( 4.5-6.5m ). FPL Towers has been very generous in pricing forwards this year, having probably observed last season where there were hardly any options for long stretches in the mid-price range, more on that below. Who are the best FPL forwards & what should be the optimum striker combination?

FPL Team Structure for Forwards
Team structure & Price points has meant that the forward combinations which are most popular in early drafts are one of the following :
- Option A : 1 x Premium + 2 x Budget
Eg : Kane/Haaland + 2 x 4.5 OR Kane/Haaland + 1×6.0 + 1×4.5 - Option B : 1 x Premium + 1 x Mid Price + 1 x Budget
Eg : Kane + Jesus + 1×4.5 - Option C : 2 x Premium + 1 x Budget
Eg : Kane + Haaland + 4.5
With this in mind, let us dive into a Bucket-wise analysis of the Forwards on offer.
FPL Premium Forwards ~ Bucket: 9.5m – 11.5m
Erling Haaland (11.5m)
Predictably, the hottest young sensation in world football right now playing for the most attacking team in the league has meant that Erling Haaland (11.5m) has already been selected by a whopping 64.8% of teams so far, despite being the most expensive forward in the game.
Man City scored 99 goals last season with an xG which was second only to Liverpool & Haaland himself has an average of ~26 G+A in his last 3 seasons at Borussia Dortmund, therefore it is understandable that FPL managers expect Haaland to make an immediate impression given Man City’s kind initial fixture run (3 of the 1st 5 games at home, 2 of them against newly promoted sides).
Haaland has played 135 minutes in pre-season playing against Bayern and Liverpool. Scoring one goal vs Bayern.

Harry Kane (11.5m)
With most of the attention on Haaland, it has meant that Harry Kane (11.5m) has totally flown under the radar. In fact, he isn’t even in the top 2 most popular Spurs assets with Perisic & Son having far more early backers. In my opinion, Spurs can be the template breakers simply because they now have a world-class manager in Antonio Conte who will be getting a full pre-season to work with his squad. Kane is well positioned to have a stellar season once again after finishing as the highest points-scoring forward last season.
He scored 21G & notched 11A, actually underperforming his xG for the 1st time in his last 5 seasons and with Spurs’ excellent transfer business this year, one can expect him to have an even better season with a strong supporting cast behind him. Kane is a legitimate captaincy shout in GW1 with that Home fixture vs Southampton. Apart from Chelsea in GW2, their opening fixtures are decent with Spurs playing 2 promoted sides in the first 6 gameweeks.
Kane has been in prolific form in pre-season scoring 5 goals and assisting one in just three games.
Jamie Vardy (9.5m)
The other 2 options in this price bracket are Cristiano Ronaldo (10.5m) and Jamie Vardy (9.5m). Despite Ronaldo finishing 21/22 with 18G, 3A, and 2nd best xG of 16.47 (amongst forwards), he is a firm avoid for GW1, he is yet to turn up for training to Carrington or join the Man United squad on their pre-season tour as of writing & there are rumors of him wanting a move away from Man United. Moreover, it would be interesting to see Ronaldo fits into the pressing style that Erik Ten-Haag prefers.
Vardy has had a price drop this year. He needs no introduction, we all know his calibre & that he starts a season well. Vardy’s 5.9 points per start in 2021/22 was the best amongst all forwards. However, 9.5 is an awkward price point in terms of team structure and Leicester have a mixed start in the first six weeks, they play 3 of last year’s top 6 ( ranked 14th as per FFScout’s Att FDR ) hence he is an avoid for me for now. That said, Leicester with no midweek European football are firmly on the watchlist for me & Vardy may come into my team later when their fixtures ease a bit.
Vardy has looked sharp in pre-season scoring two goals for the foxes.

FPL Mid Price Forwards ~ Bucket: 7.0m – 9.0m
Darwin Nunez (9.0m)
Liverpool may start this season with an entirely new front 3 and it is yet to be known how Klopp sets up with Diogo Jota(Injured now), their new signing, Darwin Nunez (both at 9.0m) or Bobby Firmino (8.0m). Liverpool slots are hard to come by and with Trent Alexander-Arnold & Mo Salah locked into most teams, managers would be better served by picking Luis Diaz or Andrew Robertson instead of going for one of the forwards atleast to begin with.
Having said that, it is to be noted that Jota had his career-best season last year with 15G, 7A, 3rd best xG of 14.54 (amongst forwards) and an xA of 6.91. He’s currently injured which doesn’t give a lot of options in the Forward role for Liverpool’s extremely appealing initial fixture run of FUL(A), CRY(H), MUN(A), BOU(H), NEW(H), EVE(A). Either Nunez or Firmino are the current options for Klopp.
Darwin Nunez also had his best season for Benfica last year scoring 26G but he did overperform his xG and with him being new to the league, it would be a risk to start with Nunez in your GW1 team.
Nunez has scored five goals in the pre-season and assisted one goal with four of them coming in one game against Leipzig and the other one against Man City in the shield game. In both games, he came in as a sub for Firmino.
Richarlison (8.5m) having moved from Merseyside to London is suspended for GW1. He was Everton’s talisman last season (0.36 xG90 and 0.16 xA90) and a large part of why they managed to avoid relegation although it is to be seen how Conte utilizes him in this Spurs setup since Kane & Son are undroppable in the 2 positions Richarlison has played at Everton in.
Kai Havertz (8.0m) is favoured to start in the CF role at Chelsea with Lukaku having left for Inter Milan. Havertz had 20 G/A last season ( 12 G/A in the PL ) and 0.55 G/A per 90 in all competitions, which aren’t spectacular but there are reasons for that which are well known. Havertz was also the Chelsea player who had the most big chances falling to him. He did look encouraging when he got a sustained run in the team in the 2nd half of last season and this year, if he can make that striker role his own then he would represent outstanding value for money.

Gabriel Jesus (8.0m)
The FPL forward of choice at the moment is new Arsenal signing – Gabriel Jesus (8.0m). His stats from Man City’s 2021/22 season are middling – 0.48 xG per 90 & 0.28 xA per 90 and expectations can be tempered since Arsenal are not an attacking machine like Man City and Jesus always underperforms his stats.
Gameweek: | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
ARS | cry | LEI | bou | FUL | AVL | mun | EVE |
But his very friendly price, his nailedness, the fact that he may share penalties with Saka and Arsenal’s kind opening fixture run till GW7 [ CRY (A), LEI (H), BOU(A), FUL(H), AVL (H), MUN(A), EVE (A) ] make him a very enticing option.
Jesus is the highest-scoring player in pre-season, scoring seven goals in just five games. He’s also the most owned player in FPL atm with an ownership of 67.4%.
After GW7, Arsenal drop to 19th on the fixture ticker and it is an opportune time to move on Jesus to other striking options namely, Wilson and Watkins/Ings with Newcastle & Villa moving to the top of FFScout’s Attacking FDR.

Callum Wilson (7.5m)
Newcastle have a tough start to the season, they face MCI & LIV in the first 5 gameweeks, sandwiched between away trips to BHA & WOL. Hence Callum Wilson (7.5m) could be a solid buy post that when their fixtures become better. He missed a large part of the season in 2021/22 but when he did play, he did not disappoint Fantasy owners with 8 goals in 16 appearances , that is 0.52 goals every 90 mins (including a brace in GW38 ).
His last season goals per 90 stat is beaten by only Ronaldo & Vardy and his points per stat is beaten by only Ronaldo, Vardy & Kane all of whom are considerably more expensive. Newcastle also became a better side overall after the January transfer window, with a big jump in their team xG per 90 from 1.0 to 1.4. The above facts make Wilson a decent pick to own, ofcourse, if we account for the fact that he usually overperforms his stats relying on his clinical & cool finishing. He becomes a solid FPL pick more importantly if he can keep his hamstrings intact and get a sustained run in the team.
Wilson looks sharp with a full pre-season and scored in the last friendly for Newcastle vs Athletic Club. A well-taken striker’s goal.
Ollie Watkins (7.5m)
Ollie Watkins (7.5m) finished last season well with 3G/1A in his last 5. Aston Villa have okay fixtures from GW 1-4 ( BOU (A), EVE (H), CRY(A),WHU(H) ), then they face Arsenal and Man City in GW 5-6 before their fixtures ease up again.
Gameweek: | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 |
AVL | bou | EVE | cry | WHU | ars | MCI | lei |
Watkins had a decent run out in pre-season scoring one goal. But looked sharp overall.
Ivan Toney (7.0m)
Brentford sit at 5th in FFScout’s Att FDR for the first 6 gameweeks and that has increased the appeal of Ivan Toney (7.0m) for a lot of managers. Last season, Toney amongst forwards was 3rd for Chances Created (CC), 2nd for Big Chances Created (BCC), 3rd for Goal Attempts, 3rd for Shots in the Box (SiB), 1st for headed attempts, 1st for xA, and 3rd for xGI.
These indicate that he could pick up this season where he left off, however, a massive caveat to that is the impending departure of Christian Eriksen to Manchester United. Toney’s stats were much worse without Eriksen in the side and it is to be seen whether the loss of the Danish midfielder will impact Toney this season as well.
Other options in this price range are a wait and watch. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (8.0m), Michael Antonio (7.5m) and Danny Ings (7.0m) all finished last season poorly. Patrick Bamford (7.5m) played only 557 minutes in 2021/22 and remains on ‘a cautious trajectory’ back to full fitness. It is unclear how Eddie Nketiah (7.0m) fits into Arteta’s plans with Jesus around and the same can be said of the returning Tony Martial (7.0m). Raul Jimenez (7.0m, injured now) also falls in the same category and although he has a good set of opening fixtures, we have to be mindful that Wolves were 19th for xG amongst all teams in the PL last season.
There is also the fact that many premium defenders in the 6.0m-7.0m bracket represent much better value and ‘explosiveness’ this season than forwards at this price point.

FPL Budget Forwards ~ Bucket: 4.5m – 6.5m
The first names that jump out in this price range all come from the promoted teams: Bournemouth, Fulham & Nottingham Forest.
Aleksandr Mitrovic (6.5m)
Aleksandr Mitrovic (6.5m) – Despite Mitrovic being a huge flop the last time Fulham were in the Premier League, it is impossible to ignore his & Fulham’s stats from the 2021/22 Championship season which were nothing short of outstanding. Mitrovic scored 43 goals & recorded 7 assists last year, averaging a return every 76 minutes with an expected goal involvement (xGI) of 0.94 per match.
These are incredible numbers. He won the Golden Boot & became the all-time record goalscorer in the Championship. The reason he isn’t walking straight into my GW1 team though is twofold :
- Fulham’s tough start to the season – they are 18th on FFScout’s Attacking FDR
- Whether Fulham are creatively impacted with the sale of the dynamic Fabio Carvalho to Liverpool.
Mitrovic is once again the talisman for Fulham in pre-season scoring three goals and assisting one in just two games.
Dominic Solanke (6.0m) – Another PL flop who also had a stellar season in the 2021/22 Championship. Solanke scored 29 goals & recorded 7 assists last year, averaging a return every 113 minutes. He was second only to Mitrovic in the Golden Boot race. However, Bournemouth have the toughest start to the PL season – they are 20th on FFScout’s Attacking FDR and we can wait on BOU/Solanke till their fixtures ease.
Solanke has bagged two goals in pre-season, but Bournemouth have looked poor overall.

Taiwo Awoniyi
Both of Nottingham Forest’s strikers are priced at 6.0m. Brennan Johnson was the first choice forward in their promotion season scoring 18 goals and recording 10 assists for a return every 150 minutes. But NFO have broken their club record transfer fee this window by signing Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin. Awoniyi finished with a personal best 20 goals in 43 appearances becoming the club-record goalscorer in the Bundesliga.
NFO’s fixtures are decent to begin ( 9th on FFScout’s Att FDR ) with but it will be interesting to see how Steve Cooper sets up with both Johnson & Awoniyi at his disposal. NFO play in a similar system to Union Berlin & Awoniyi along with Max Kruse was Bundesliga’s most compatible strike duo last year hence those managers looking to bring in a Forest forward should monitor their pre-season matches closely.
A notable mention here to Man City’s new signing Julian Alvarez (6.5m) who was bought by the Cityzens in January 2022 but only joined them in June after completing the season with River Plate. A quick glance at last season’s per 90 comparisons between Alvarez & Haaland show that Alvarez pretty much matched Haaland for stats – G+A/90 of 1.36 (Alvarez) and 1.41 (Haaland) with the competitiveness of the Bundesliga vs the Argentine Primera Division an obvious caveat.
Although it can be assumed that Alvarez will be preferred in the domestic Cup competitions when Haaland needs a breather, his versatility of being an out-and-out striker who can also play on the left wing may get him some minutes in the Premier League. An interesting choice surely.
Alvarez scored his first goal against Liverpool in the community shield game.

Bryan Mbeumo
Two other popular picks from last season are priced at 6.0m in this category – Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo who has received a positional reclassification & Newcastle United’s Chris Wood. Engaged FPL managers will be aware how frustrating owning these two players was at times last season and their fellow strikers, Toney & Wilson represent better value & better underlying stats at just 1.0-1.5m more.
Four goals in pre-season for Mbeumo and he seems to be in good form playing as an RW in the 4-3-3 system of Frank.

Deniz Undav (5.5m)
Elsewhere, Brighton’s entire forward line is in this category with Danny Welbeck & Neal Maupay the most expensive (6.5m) and Julio Enciso the cheapest (5.0m). The one that catches the eye the most is Deniz Undav (5.5m) signed from Belgian side Union SG after scoring 26 goals for them in the 2021-22 season. Brighton, albeit having a good start to the season, but are an avoid at this moment since we know Potter’s propensity to tinker & are yet to know his preference amongst BHA’s many options.
Undav scored once in pre-season and is the preferred choice over Maupay from reports.
The rest of the picks in this bracket do not stand out whatsoever. Leicester City’s Iheanacho (6.5m) & Daka (6.0m) do not have a security of minutes which is also the case for Crystal Palace’s Benteke, Edouard & Mateta, Leeds United’s Joe Gelhardt, and Southampton’s Adam Armstrong (all 5.5m). A special mention for Fantasy favorite Kienan Davis back from his loan at Nottingham Forest, who has received a 1.0m price bump & is now 5.5m despite having played only 11 PL mins in the entire 2021/22 season.
Daka has had a good pre-season for Leicester scoring three goals and grabbed an assist. One to watch out surely!

Cameron Archer (4.5m)
Finally that most elusive of FPL picks – a 4.5m playing striker seems to be a dead spot this season as well. Leeds United’s Sam Greenwood is one to monitor though, having started in the No.10 role in their most recent pre-season friendly. Aston Villa’s Cameron Archer (also 4.5m) scored twice in Aston Villa’s pre-season but he is firmly behind Watkins and Ings in the pecking order.
Ideal FPL Forward Combinations for 2022/23 Season
Having gone through the analysis in detail above & taking note of the 3 striker combination options mentioned above :
- The 1st question on everyone’s mind is Haaland OR Kane OR Both – As good as Kane is or will be this season, backing against a heavily owned Haaland, who is likely to be the most captained asset in GW2 when MCI play BOU (H), seems to be an unnecessary risk to take this early in the game. Another option would be to start GW1 with Kane ( SOU (H) ) and then book a transfer to Haaland in GW2 but again, booking transfers is not a strategy I am personally fond of. Hence, Option A or B is more preferable to start with.
Of course, those opting for a threemium structure of 2 premium strikers Haaland & Kane along with Salah/Son (Option C) do not have this conundrum if they are okay with the compromises & inflexibility that would inevitably arise with the rest of the squad ( which is okay since the three Wildcards effectively on offer between GW1 & GW17, act as multiple get-out-of-jail-free opportunities in case this strategy backfires ). - If it is then down to one of Option A or B, the next question is whether to go for Option A ( 2 x Budget strikers ) or Option B ( 1 x Mid + 1 x Budget )
As of now, all budget strikers from the promoted teams i.e. Johnson / Awoniyi, Mitrovic & Solanke can be avoided till when their fixtures ease up around GW 6 / GW 8 and we get to see how well the teams have accustomed to the top flight. The other budget options are unattractive for various reasons as detailed above. Hence, picking a Budget striker as a starting slot from GW1 onwards does not seem to be the ideal option ruling out Option A.
Those opting for a threemium strategy with 1 premium striker and Salah + Son will inevitably end up with a structure where the other 2 forwards are 2×4.5m dead spots.
- Hence the preferred strategy to begin the season with is Option B ( 1 x Premium + 1 x Mid + 1 x Budget )
The advantage of picking a mid-price forward in the 7.5-9.0m bracket is that it allows us the flexibility of jumping on and off forwards depending on their fixture run. AllAboutFPL did a Twitter Thread where they analyzed rotating Watkins/Ings, Toney, Wilson, and DCL meant a great fixture run through to GW16.
With Havertz, Jota & Darwin Nunez also being in this price range it will allow for managers to hop onto these assets in case of a favorable fixture swing or run of form without requiring too much surgery to the team. This also allows us to change team structure easily by moving to the plethora of options in the 8.0m MID range in just two transfers.
The mid-price forward of choice is Gabriel Jesus. He was Arteta’s top target having worked previously with each other at Man City. Jesus seems up for the challenge and is eager to be the focal point of a top 6 side after years of playing second fiddle at the Etihad.
Arteta seems to know Jesus’ qualities well – he has good movement, a good work ethic, and good link-up play. What remains to be seen is if he can be clinical in front of the goal. At only 8.0m and with those fixtures, it feels like a low-risk move to find that out by selecting him in our GW1 team.
