Best £5 & £5.5 Million FPL Defenders
Kieran Trippier
The first on the list of best £5 & £5.5 Million FPL Defenders is Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier. Despite playing only 6 games last season, Trippier contributed with 2 goals. He had an xG of 0.25 and an xA of 0.46. The right-back is known for his attacking prowess and had 62 touches in the final third, averaging around 13 per 90. If you look at his heat map, you can see how high up the field he operates.
In these 6 appearances, he also created 7 chances, which is an average of 61 mins per chance created. He also on free-kicks and corners, adding an extra bonus to his already high point ceiling. Priced at 5 million with an ownership of 16.5%, Trippier can be a great addition to your team.
He also got Two assists against Benfica in pre-season and looks in good form linking up well with Almiron who seems to have established himself at RW.

Ivan Perisic
Next on our list of best £5 & £5.5 Million FPL Defenders is Tottenham’s Ivan Perisic. Priced at 5.5 million with an ownership of 30.2% already, if Perisic can remain fit, he can be a true FPL gem this season.
In the 35 games, he played last season for Inter Milan, Perisic scored 8 times and assisted a further 6. He had an xG of 0.16 and an xA of 0.25 per 90. The Croatian averaged around 27 touches in the attacking third and 5.24 in the opponent’s penalty box per 90, making him a credible attacking threat.
However, Perisic has played only time in the pre-season and is untested in the Premier League. Ryan Sessegnon is rumored to start the season for Spurs, so Perisic will be one to watch for, rather than one to have in your team.

Matty Cash
Next on our list of best 5-5.5 million defenders is Aston Villa’s Matty Cash. Priced at 5 million with an ownership of 20.6%, Matty Cash is a popular pick in this price range.
Cash played all 38 games for Aston Villa last season, scoring 4 times and assisting thrice, while having an FPL goal involvement of 14. He also helped Villa keep 13 clean sheets. He averaged 14 touches in the attacking third and 3 in the penalty box.
In total he created 28 chances, averaging one every 121 minutes, and 3 big chances. He also scored 147 FPL points last season, fourth-highest among full-backs and highest for defenders priced 5.5 million or lower.
With Aston Villa’s first four fixtures being kind to them, will Matty Cash make it into your fpl team?

Marc Cucurella
Last year’s Brighton player of the season who was linked with a move to Man City has now joined Chelsea where he could play at LB and LCB roles in Tuchel’s three-at-the-back system with Koulibaly expected to play RCB which guarantees James will be playing RWB. Cucurella registered 126 points last season and could have definitely had more. At 5 Million he could be a great option to consider from Chelsea.
Luke Shaw
Next on our list of best 5-5.5 million defenders is Manchester United’s Luke Shaw. Shaw has played three games in the pre-season, pointing towards him being a starter in Ten Hag’s United. He has been taking corners also and has had one assist during the pre-season.
Shaw played 20 games last season and had three assists. He averaged around 22 touches in the final third and had a FPL Goal Involvement of 10. He created one chance every 41 mins and 5 big chances in total.
With Manchester United looking quite good attacking wise under Erik Ten Hag can we see an improvement in Shaw’s numbers this season?
With an ownership of just 1.1%, Shaw can be a gem this season if United sort themselves out defensively.

Kyle Walker
Next on our list is Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, who is priced at 5 million and owned by only 5.9%. Walker played 20 games last season and contributed with 2 assists. He averaged around 16 touches in the final third per 90 and one in the penalty box per 90.
As you can see from his heat map, Walker also tends to drift in a little centrally offering some more room to create chances.
He also had a FPL Goal Involvement of 5 last season. With Zinchenko sold and Cucurella moving to Chelsea, Walker could be a nailed on starter, at least in the beginning few weeks of the season.
At such a low ownership, would you consider Walker for your team?

The Ukrainian made only 15 appearances last season, but was still able to contribute with 4 assists. He averaged around 30 touches in the final third per 90 while averaging around 2 touches in the penalty box per 90.
He also had an FPL goal involvement of 8. He created a chance per 66 mins that he was on the pitch, while also creating 3 big chances in total. He was also on set-piece duty at Manchester City.

Lucas Digne
For the last full-back on this list of 5-5.5 million defenders, we go back to Aston Villa and look at Lucas Digne.
Digne, unlike Matty Cash, has a pretty low ownership of only 3.9% at the same price. Digne had 29 appearances last season and contributed with 4 assists. In the last pre-season game against Rennes, he picked up an assist.
He averaged around 21 touches in the final third per 90 and 1.5 touches in the penalty box. He also had an FPL Goal Involvement of 11. Digne was also on set-piece duties last season.
With a low ownership, Digne can be a player of great value. Is he part of your plans?

Kalidou Koulibaly
The first of the two centre-backs on our list is Chelsea’s Kalidou Koulibaly, priced at 5.5 million with an ownership of 6.3%.
Kalidou Koulibaly played 27 games for Napoli last season, scoring 3 times and assisting once. He created 0.77 shot-creating actions per 90, while also creating 0.15 goal-creating actions per 90.
Koulibaly is pretty good in the air and can be a threat during set-pieces as he wins around 60% of his aerial duels.
Koulibaly is set to be a nailed starter for a large part of the season at least as Chelsea are pretty thin in the centre-back department. At 5.5, he is a cheaper route into the Chelsea defence compared to James and Chillwell.
At 6.3% ownership, is he part of your team?

In 35 appearances last season, the Brazilian scored 5 goals for the Gunners. He had around 3 touches in the opposition third and around 1.3 touches in the penalty box per 90.
He also had an FPL Goal Involvement of 8. At just 8.5% ownership and guaranteed minutes, Gabriel can be your route into the brilliant Arsenal defence which performed beyond expectations last season. Is he part of your plans?
