Salah, Son, Haaland, Alexander Arnold, Cancelo- These are the first names you expect managers to put on their Fantasy Football team. But to have these premium players in your team, you need to have the £4.0 defender or the 4.5 midfielders who will help you facilitate these moves. It is important to find these 4.0 defenders(who are likely to start) nice and early & have them on your bench so that they can chip in when required. In this article, we take a detailed look at the Best £4.0 Million FPL Defenders for the upcoming 2022/23 season who are likely to start most games.

Best £4.0 Million FPL Defenders for the 2022/23 season
Neco Williams- Nottingham Forest
On top of this list is Neco Williams who should be the most nailed 4.0 defender in the game. Nottingham Forest have signed Neco Williams from Liverpool for a fee up to £17 million. He spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan at Fulham starting 14/14 league games fetching 2 goals, and 2 assists in the process.
Position
Nottingham forest have operated with three at the back last season along with 2 wing-backs. They started with a back three of Mckenna, Steve Cook, and Worall with Colback(Left) and Spence(right) as the wing-backs towards the end of last season. They are expected to continue the same way. Nottingham Forest managed to keep 17 clean sheets last season. With Spence(Spent 2021/22 on loan at Forest) moving to Tottenham and Williams being bought for a huge amount, this could mean only one thing- Williams nailed as the right wing-back this season for Nottingham Forest. His versatile nature means he could also cover in as a left full-back if required.
Williams stats from last season
- 2 goals, 2 assists from 14 games for Fulham averaging 1.4 shots and 1 key pass per game playing as right full-back.
- In the first half of the season when he was with Liverpool, he started 2/4 League Cup games where he picked up an assist. In the Champions League, he started 2/3 games which means he has the experience playing against the big boys too.
Williams pre-season form:
- 2/2 starts since his move to Forest has been confirmed.
- Looked really impressive, took up good crossing positions and got the pre-assist in 3-1 win over Hertha Berlin.
- Lineups, updates and commentary of all the Nottingham Forest’s pre-season games available here.
Verdict
Should be the best 4.0 defender in the game at the moment as he is nailed and has attacking potential.

Nathan Patterson- Everton
Patterson was signed by Benitez during the January window of the 2021/22 season from Rangers. Lampard wanted him to adjust to the pace of the Premier League and made him play the Under-23s. By the time he was ready for Premier League football, he sustained an ankle injury in April which required surgery and ruled him out for the rest of the season. With Patterson being fully fit now, he should challenge the aging Coleman for the right-back slot.
Patterson in pre-season
- Started all 4/4 pre-season games so far.
- 2 assists in the 4-2 win vs Blackpool
- Lampard used a 3-4-3 formation with Patterson playing as wing back which resulted in the two assists.
- Lineups, updates and commentary of all the Everton’s pre-season games available here.
Verdict
He might even be the best 4.0 defender with Everton’s better defense potential and better fixtures than Forest(Neco Williams). Might be nailed from the start itself due to Coleman injury and Patterson’s impressive performance in pre-season friendlies. Pre-season friendlies of all 20 Premier League teams along with lineups, stats, and other info are covered in detail here.
Nathaniel Phillips- Liverpool*
Nathaniel Phillips is heavily linked to a loan/permanent move to Bournemouth. If the move gets confirmed he should be a nailed starter for Bournemouth at the center back, the club where has was loaned out during the January window of last season. During his spell at Bournemouth, he started 17 games in a back four of Zemura-Phillips- Kelly- Smith(Left to right). Bournemouth kept 21 clean sheets last season and Phillips could serve as a perfect 4.0 defender if he joins Bournemouth.
Phillips has also proper PL experience against the big teams- 1455 minutes, 1 goal, 1 assist, and 7 clean sheets in the 2020/21 season for Liverpool. This should also push him for regular playing time via his move to Bournemouth.
Verdict
Go for Nathaniel Phillips only if his move to Bournemouth gets confirmed. Else he is a avoid.
Update- Avoid as he is still at Liverpool.

Eric Bailly- Manchester United*
There has been multiple reports linking Bailly with a loan-to-buy option at Fulham. But it looks like the injury-prone talented defender wants to fight for a first-team spot under Eric Ten Hag. 636, 148, 915, 216- These are the Premier League minutes played by Bailly over the last 4 seasons which shows how much injured he has been.
Update: He got two assists in two games in pre season. But he is not the first or second choice CB at Man United and the move to Fulham hasn’t picked up yet.
Verdict
He will be a decent option if he moves to Fulham where he should play regularly. However given his injury record, there might be more safer 4.0 defenders come GW1 as mentioned above.
Update- Avoid as he is still at United.

Toti- Wolves
Under Bruno Lage, Wolves are known to play the back 5 with three center backs. Over the majority of last season, Coady, Boly, Saiss, and Kilman were the four first-choice CBs competing for the 3 spots. With Saiss leaving to Besiktas, Toti Gomes should be the 4th choice center back at the club. Towards the end of last season(GW22- GW38), Toti managed to get 4 starts due to injuries to other players and looked really impressive.
Verdict
Might not be nailed initially but would fight for his starting spot. Have a close watch on the pre-season friendlies of Wolves. A good option to consider only if Wolves don’t sign a center-back this window or there is an injury scare to either of Coady/Boly/Kilman.
Update- Wolves have singed centre back Nathan Collins from Burnley which puts down the appeal of Toti.

Vestergaard- Leicester City
Injury to Fofona for the most part of last season meant that Evans, Soyuncu, and Amartey shared the majority of center-back duties last year. Vestergaard was overlooked for the most part of last season despite injuries to main center backs. With no European football also this season and considering the current form of Leicester players Fofona, Evans and Soyuncu should be the 3 first-choice center-backs at the club.
Verdict
A few injuries to Leicester Center backs might make a case for Vestergaard to start, but is a wait-and-watch at the moment. A move away from Leicester to any of the smaller clubs could work out well for Vestergaard as an FPL option.

Brandon Williams- Manchester United*
With Manchester United signing Malacia and looking to retain at least one of Telles/Shaw for the LB spot, this might be another season where Brandon Williams might not feature at Manchester United. During his loan spell at Norwich last season, he started 23 Premier League games and has the ability to play on either side.
Verdict
Option to consider if Williams gets a transfer/loan move to smaller PL clubs where he could get regular action.
Update- Avoid him. He is still at Manchester United.

Joe Rodon & Tanganga- Tottenham*
Romero, Dier, Sanchez, and Davies. Now adding Lenglet to this list after his loan move from Barcelona would mean 5 good center-backs competing for 3 spots at Tottenham. This suggests that both center-backs Joe Rodon and Tanganga could be out of Tottenham this season to get regular playing time. Tanganga can almost forget competing for the RB spot at Spurs with Doherty, Spence, and Emerson Royal competing for one slot.
Rodon is linked to a move to Roma/Swansea while Tanganga is rumored to move to Bournemouth/Southampton.
Verdict
Strictly avoid them if they stay at Tottenham. Can consider them if they move to other Premier League clubs.
Update: Avoid both, Rodon has joined Rennes on loan while Tanganga is still at Spurs.
