2022/23 FPL Chip Strategy: Guide on What to do with FPL Chips

In a game where gains can often be hard to come by, maximizing the four FPL chips (Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost, and Triple Captain) can be the difference between a good and a bad season. So without further a do, let’s explore the optimum time to deploy each of the chips in this FPL Chip Strategy guide for the 2022/23 Season.

What are the new changes in terms of FPL Chips this year?

FPL chips explained for the 2022/23 Season ~ FPL Chip Strategy

The one difference between this season and the previous one, is the fact that the World cup will temporarily put the season on hold after GW16.

Accordingly, FPL have given us unlimited transfers during that time, so in essence, we have a third wildcard. This will have some bearing on when many are likely to play the other two wildcards.

As we’re all aware, when we deploy our chips is dependent on the landscape of where the blank and double gameweeks will fall. So before getting into the chips, let’s have a look at how the calendar will shape up this season.

Unforeseen circumstances such as Covid and weather aside, there are likely to be three blank gameweeks.

Potential Blank Gameweeks in 2022/23 Season

  • The first of these will be in GW25, due to the carabao cup final where either one or two matches will be postponed.
  • The second will be in GW28 for the FA Cup quarterfinals where up to 8 fixtures could be postponed, but usually, it tends to be 5 or 6.
  • The final blank gameweek of the season will be as a result of the FA Cup semifinals where up to four matches could be postponed.

What’s intriguing about this season, is that there are three potential midweeks for these fixtures to go into rather than the usual two. The postponed fixtures could be put into any of GW29, GW34, and GW37. The primary consequence of this will be that we may not get one big double gameweek as we commonly do.

Purely from a TV perspective, it would make sense for the Premier League to spread these fixtures out to maximize revenue. As such, we may get something like three or four matches put into each of those midweeks depending on how many blanks there are. This will probably affect the bench boost more so than the other chips, but we’ll come on to that a bit later.

FPL Chip Strategy for 2022/23 Season

First Wildcard.

FPL Wildcard chip explained for the 2022/23 Season ~ FPL Chip Strategy

The first wildcard has to be played before GW16 so the above paragraph is largely irrelevant for this bit.

The most important thing to keep in mind when approaching the wildcard is that, more so than any other chip, it’s very team dependent. For example, if after a couple of gameweeks your team is in disarray, it’d be unwise to wait it out just because you don’t want to deviate from your original plan. Inversely, if the majority are activating the wildcard but you don’t really see much wrong with your team, there’s no harm in waiting it out.

FPL Wildcard in GW8

Over previous seasons, there have been fixture swings, both positive and negative, for the bigger teams which have given prime opportunities to activate the wildcard. This season, however, most of the better teams have sustained kind runs followed by slightly more difficult ones simultaneous to each other so there isn’t a clear transition.

That being said, the likes of Leicester, Newcastle, and Aston Villa, all of whom will be hoping to challenge the top 6, have positive swings after GW8. That period also sees the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, and Man United come into more difficult runs so there’s potential to switch between assets from these teams.

Furthermore, GW8 coincides with the first international break, a time when FPL managers often decide to activate the wildcard. GW8 also splits the first part of the season in half so you can set your team up for two sets of 8 gameweeks, once before the season starts and once after GW8.

FPL Wildcard in GW16

The final gameweek we’re exploring is very much influenced by the World cup curve ball. on the surface, GW16 effectively gives you one opportunity for your moves to pay off. However, rather than use the unlimited period as an additional wildcard, playing the first wildcard in GW16 allows you to use it as what is in essence a second free hit, before you can use the unlimited transfers as your wildcard.

In this gameweek, Man United travel to Fulham, Liverpool host Southampton, Man City faces Brentford at home and Tottenham also have a kind home fixture against Leeds. Going all in on these teams for one GW could prove to be extremely fruitful, and it will almost be a differential strategy.

Second FPL Wildcard and FPL Free hit.

The second wildcard has far more riding on it than the first, purely because of the lure of the double gameweeks in the second half of the season. There are a couple of strategies that appear viable at this stage, with the very little information that we have.

For reasons previously alluded to, it’s impossible to gauge which double gameweek will be the biggest and as such the most popular for the bench boost so all of this is heavily caveated. For the sake of argument, we’ll assume that the bench boost will be suited for either GW34 or GW37.

Multiple Chip Strategies

FPL Chip Strategy one: Wildcard GW29 and FH GW32.

This is probably a slightly defensive approach, and dependent on where you’re ranked around the time, may or may not be for you.  In order to play the wildcard in GW29, you’d have to dead end into GW28. In other words, in the weeks preceding this period, you’d have to fill your team with players who play in GW28, before you wildcard them out for those who have doubles in GW29. A GW29 wildcard allows you to walk straight into a double gameweek. You can almost approach it as a bit of a free hit.

Moreover, at this point, you’ll have a decent idea as to how GW34 and even GW37 will play out in regards to the teams that’ll have double gameweeks. wildcarding here would allow you to cover all of those gameweeks with one chip, setting up a theoretical bench boost GW34 team as well.

In this scenario, the GW32 blank, by caused the FA Cup semifinals, would require navigating and that can be easily managed with the free hit. You’d be able to remove the players that aren’t playing in GW32 but still come back to them the following week, so it makes a lot of sense to play the free hit here.

FPL Chip Strategy Strategy two, Free hit GW29, wildcard GW33.

This is definitely the more aggressive strategy out of the two, because of that, its also the option. Free hitting in Gw29 means that you can focus on that GW alone. Rather than having a more even spread of doublers for the rest of the season, you can go all in on GW29.

It also means that, if you wildcard in GW33, you can set up for a bench boost for the GW directly following it. wildcarding in a few weeks in advance of your bench boost can often be problematic due to there being more time for players to get injured, or to have significant dips of form. Given that this strategy nullifies that for the most part, it may well be the more favorable of the two.

The above all being said, BGW32 will be a problem here. Whereas with the first strategy, you can cover it with the free hit, you’re essentially hoping for damage limitation in this case. You’d be relying on a couple of free transfers, plus the gain you’ve made from deploying the chip in GW29 to usurp the potential loss from when others will be playing it. Therefore, though the second strategy is the more exciting option, there’s also a possibility of it backfiring.

Bench boost and triple captain

Bench boost and triple captain ~ FPL Chip Strategy 2022/23 Season

As is the case with the free hit and wildcard, the deployment is very much codependent on each other. As we touched upon earlier, there isn’t a clear gameweek that can be pinpointed as the biggest of the season, so at this point, it isn’t clear as to when will be optimal to play the bench boost.

As for the triple captain, of the standout options, some of the highlights include the following: In GW34, Man City could face Bournemouth at home and Fulham away. In GW37, Liverpool could face Aston Villa at home and one of Nottingham Forest or Fulham away. Another team whose GW37 potential double could be triple captain worthy is Tottenham’s, as they could face Southampton and Brentford. Obviously, this is all very presumptuous, and it may pan out completely differently, but based on what we currently know, these are the most appealing combinations. The week that presents the best opportunity for you to play the triple captain chip may ultimately dictate when you play the Bench boost. If the aforementioned Man City double transpires in GW34, GW37 would be a prime opportunity for the bench boost, and vice versa. If you’re more inclined to bench boost soon after wildcarding, you may wish to bench boost in GW34 instead.

The one thing to keep in mind is that, ultimately, every team is different. The group think may not be what is best for you and if that is the case, you shouldn’t be afraid to take a less popular route with regards to your FPL Chip strategy for the season.
