Now let’s take a more in-depth look at these games separately.

Denmark VS Finland:

The Danes are my dark horses for this year’s euros. With the likes of Schmeichel, Christensen, Eriksen, Delaney, Dolberg, and Poulsen, this team is full of big names and something a lot of people haven’t noticed is that they play all their group games at home. In their first game, they are facing a very inexperienced, lackluster Finland side that has been defeated by Estonia, Sweden, and Switzerland in their last three games. The Teemu Pukki party doesn’t seem like continuing this summer and if we take a look at their historical head-to-head results, things get worse for the Finnish. Denmark won 2 and drawn 1 of their 3 games played. I expect Eriksen’s side to win this game with ease and I am even considering placing my armband on the ex-spurs player over a Belgian player, let’s see why.

Russia VS Belgium:

The first thing to point out from this game is, despite the fact that it’s presented as a Belgium-at-home fixture, this game is actually played at St Petersburg. The majority of managers expect the red devils to not face much opposition but there are two main reasons that make me question the attacking potential of this game.

The first is that KDB is missing this game and Hazard is coming out of an injury, having struggled with them all season. Hazard is no longer the player that we saw in the last world cup and this obviously affects the red devils’ attacking potential.

This brings me to my second worry, the hostility of the Russian crowd. As we have seen in the previous tournaments, the hosts, carried by their supporters, always seem to over-perform. South Korea reached the semi-finals of the world cup in 2002. Russia, more recently, beat Spain to reach the quarter-finals in the 2018 World Cup. The home advantage can’t be denied.

Historically, this is a game dominated by the Roberto Martinez’ men. 2 wins and 1 draw, with an astonishing 13 goals scored among the two teams in the 3 games. The most recent of these games was Belgium’s 4-1 win in the qualifiers, back in November 2019.

Personally, KDB’s and Hazard’s injury worries, put enough doubt in my mind to make me think one Belgium attacker(Lukaku) is enough for this game and that my armband is better placed in the Copenhagen game.

Spain VS Sweden:

La Roja’s recent friendly against Portugal really impressed me. As usual, Luis Enrique’s men dominated possession and if they had a more lethal striker in Morata’s place they would have smashed Portugal. According to Draft Hound, Spain has the biggest chance to win their opening game of all teams. Taking into account they are playing at home against a dodgy Sweden side, I tend to agree. Past results have seen Spain storm the Nordic, 4 wins in 4 games, having scored 9 goals against Sweden´s 0. Ferran Torres is my favorite asset in this game.

Hungary VS Portugal:

Now my team, Portugal. Like I’ve previously mentioned, I didn’t enjoy our performance against Spain, at least from an attacking point of view, and I fear that the typical lack of creativity in the final third will hurt us. I expect this game to be tight! I don’t see a world where the 3-3 from the 2016 Euros is repeated. Bernardo’s return will certainly improve the overall quality of play but I still wouldn’t predict many goals. However, I do like this game for our defensive assets, a clean sheet looks likely, especially in Szoboszlai’s absence.
