Euro Fantasy Football | Group – D~ Review, Analysis, and Top Fantasy Assets

It’s time to have a quick look at Euro 2020 Group D as we are only a few days away from the long-awaited event. In this blog, we take a look at the top fantasy choices this group has to offer

Euro Fantasy Football Group D analysis:

England:

is it coming home this summer?
is it coming home this summer?

FIFA World Ranking: 4th
Qualification Record: W7, D0, L1
Goals For: 37
Goals Against: 6

Defense:

England qualified to the summer showpiece with ease, and are one of the bookies favorites to be crowned champions on July 11th. Manager Southgate has a lot of options in each position and that is not ideal for us fantasy managers, however, it is evident that the team is quite resilient at the back and that was reflected in 5 clean sheets out of their 8 qualifiers games. As much as I like the attacking potential of Trent Alexander Arnold (6.5M), he was not a guaranteed starter under Southgate, and unfortunately, he just left the squad with an injury. Both Luke Shaw (6M) and Ben Chilwell (6M) are also attacking but who is favored to start at that left-back position is anyone’s guess. Therefore, it is fair to say that 5.5M Harry Maguire (if passed fit) is possibly the best choice in defense, mainly for the security of starts and his presence/threat on set pieces.

Attack:

England has a lot of talent and quality in the attacking positions and will not struggle to score goals by any means. Harry Kane will be central to most attacks and is a prime contender for the golden boot after topping the goalscoring charts in the qualifiers with 12 goals, and most importantly is nailed to start every game – something that you can’t guarantee for other players. Mason Mount is having a spectacular season at Chelsea and is very likely going to fill in the “more attacking” spot in the 3 man midfield. Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Jadon Sancho, and Jack Grealish will all be fighting for the two winger spots which again is to leave us fantasy managers with selection headaches.

General Thoughts:

Despite a relatively disappointing Nations League campaign, England’s squad depth can’t be matched by any other team in this tournament and this could prove vital for their progress this summer. The Three Lions will hope to stop the years of hurt count and finally bring a trophy back home, and with their aforementioned technical superiority over a lot of the continent nations, fans will have every right to believe in their chances of being crowned champions.

  • Mount (Midfielder 7M)

Croatia:

Croatia have become a european power house
Croatia have become a european power house

FIFA World Ranking: 14th
Qualification Record: W5, D2, L1
Goals For: 17
Goals Against: 7

Defense:

Croatia won Group E in the qualifiers, a group that ended up having 4 representatives this summer. The Croatians need to be more conscious defensively as their qualifying record of 2 clean sheets in 8 games isn’t ideal, however, Croatia has always stepped up in major tournaments and this year could be no different. Dejan Lovren (5M) seems to be a safe pick that starts every game and does provide some threat from set-pieces. Fullbacks Sime Vrsaljko (5M) and Borna Barisic (4.5M) enjoy an attacking style of football, the former presenting experience while the latter joins the tournament after an excellent unbeaten season with Rangers.

Attack:

The Croatians have genuine quality in midfield and attack and it’s no surprise that they managed to score in all their qualifier games. Team captain Luka Modric is the creative hub in this side and is as nailed as it gets. The maestro has 5 goals and 3 assists in La Liga this season and should be on penalties with his national side. Ivan Perisic has a very respectable international record and should feature heavily from the left side attacks. Attacking midfielder Nikola Vlasic (6.5M) is a very interesting option given his price as he joins the team in absolutely fine form scoring 11 goals and assisting 5 this season with CSKA Moscow, noting that he played in 6 games out of 8 in qualifiers, so definitely one to monitor in the next friendlies. Striker Bruno Petkovic was instrumental to Croatia’s qualifying campaign, scoring 4 goals and assisting 1 but has only managed a single goal in the recent Nations League tournament.

General Thoughts:

The 2018 World Cup runners-up will fancy their chances of qualifying from this group, and on their day are capable of making life difficult for most sides. As clinical as they are upfront, the Croatians need to strengthen their defensive capabilities if they are to repeat their 2018 heroics. In my opinion, Croatia will have no difficulties in progressing to the knockout stages.

Scotland:

Scotland will look to go as deep as possible!
Scotland will look to go as deep as possible!

FIFA World Ranking: 44th
Qualification Record: W5, D0, L5
Goals For: 16
Goals Against: 19

Defense:

the Scots will be beyond motivated playing their first major tournament since 1998, yet the team needs to show some improvement on their qualifying form if they are to progress into the knockout stages. The left flank of the team is exceptional with Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson (5.5M) a world-class performer at LB/LWB and Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney (5M) in the back three. Robertson has 1 goal and 7 assists in the Premier League this season, compared to Tierney’s 1 goal and 3 assists. Tierney however managed a hattrick of assists in his last international outing vs Faroe Islands.

Attack:

Unfortunately, Scotland are lacking in this department and their main sort of threat is presented by Aston Villa’s midfielder John McGinn, who had an impressive qualifying campaign scoring 7 times, that is 44% of the total goals scored by the team. Che Adams made his senior debut for Scotland in 2021 and is expected to lead the line after his fine form over the last few months with club Southampton. Ryan Fraser has sparks of talent and his 7 goals and 14 assists with Bournemouth in season 2018/19 should strengthen his appeal. However, he was hit by a couple of injuries this season at Newcastle so question marks will be raised on his sharpness and playing minutes.

General Thoughts:

Scotland is undeniably improving a lot over the last few years, but they still need to step up their game and that is quite understandable when we figure out that they lost 0-7 and 1-6 on aggregate to Belgium and Russia in qualifiers. In my opinion, getting a positive result against the Czechs at Hampden Park is a must if they want to progress beyond the group stages.

Czech Republic:

Czech Republic could be the surprise package in this group
Czech Republic could be the surprise package in this group

FIFA World Ranking: 40th
Qualification Record: W5, D0, L3
Goals For: 13
Goals Against: 11

Defense:

Czech Republic has qualified for their seventh consecutive European Championship, which is a remarkable achievement. They managed to finish second in their qualifying group, just behind England, and in fact, were the only side that beat the Three Lions in that group. Defensively, the team conceded 11 goals (6 of them against England) and only managed 2 clean sheets, which isn’t a good sign going into the tournament. Vladimir Coufal (5.0M) is definitely the standout option from their defense as he joins the team in spectacular form assisting 7 goals for club West Ham. Ondrej Celustka (4.5M) is supposed to be a nailed starter in center back and is a cheaper choice if the extra 0.5M couldn’t be raised for Coufal.

Attack:

The Czechs are not a free scoring team, and the fact that they lost their two Nations League games against Scotland who they are supposedly competing with for a “hopeful” qualifying third place spot is not a perfect sign – however it is fair to say that the Czechs were forced to use a very weakened side in one of those games after a COVID-19 outbreak plagued their squad. The team will heavily rely on Tomas Soucek who has been a monster this season scoring 10 goals for West Ham and grabbing a hattrick against Estonia back in March in the World Cup qualifiers. Vladimir Darida should be nailed in the attacking midfield slot and has assisted twice in the last international break, while Bayern Leverkusen striker Patrick Schick will lead the attack after scoring 4 goals in the 6 qualifier games he took part in.

General Thoughts:

The Czechs team spirit and good organization will be probably their biggest strengths heading into Euro 2020. Soucek is in the form of his life and carries the dream of this nation on his shoulders. However the whole team needs to be more clinical than they’ve shown of late if they want to make it past the group stages, and their opener vs Scotland should shed some lights on their potential stay in the elite competition.

Top Euro Fantasy Choices from Czech Republic:

  • Soucek (Midfielder 6.5M)

My prediction for Group D is as follows:

1- England
2- Croatia
3- Czech Republic
4- Scotland
