It is time to move on and look at four new teams as we prepare our teams for the big event that kicks off in just 8 days. In this blog, we explore Euro 2020 Group C and what it has to offer us in terms of fantasy potential.

Euro Fantasy Football Group C analysis:

Euro Fantasy Group C ~ Netherlands review and top fantasy assets
Netherlands are back in a major tournament

FIFA World Ranking: 16th
Qualification Record: W6, D1, L1
Goals For: 24
Goals Against: 7

Defense:

Netherlands is back after surprisingly missing out on successive major tournaments. While the squad is largely settled heading into the competition, Frank De Boer has received a huge blow in the middle of his defense after Virgil Van Dijk was ruled out of the tournament and will now need to decide between Stefan de Vrij and Daley Blind to partner Juve’s Matthijs De Ligt. In fact, this decision could also impact Owen Wijndal (4.5M) who is facing competition from Blind for the LB spot. It’s worth keeping an eye on Denzel Dumfries who has been heavily involved in goals and assists at PSV, yet I don’t see him as a guaranteed starter. Goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen has been excluded from the squad and that opens up the doors for Tim Krul (4.5M) to nail down that goalkeeper position and potentially offer exceptional value.

Attack:

The Flying Dutchmen have always had a reputation of playing entertaining football, and this generation is no different. Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong is a maestro in midfield and a locked-in starter, yet is not a preferred fantasy option for me due to his “defensive responsibilities”. On the other hand, Georginio Wijnaldum is an interesting pick given his role at the country level is completely different from what he does at Liverpool, and that is illustrated in 8 goals scored during qualifiers. Memphis Depay will lead the attack, the Lyon striker is currently enjoying a fine spell of form scoring 20 Ligue 1 goals and assisting 10, and is the first name to cross the mind when the men in orange score.

General Thoughts:

After failing to qualify for both the 2016 Euro Cup and the 2018 World Cup, the team will be eager to bring back the good old days of Netherlands. The absence of team captain Virgil Van Dijk will no doubt hinder the progress of this side in the tournament and that hole was clearly exploited by Turkey back in March in their World Cup qualification game that ended in a 4-2 loss. However, I still can see the “Oranje” finishing on top of their group.

Ukraine:

Ukraine Euro Fantasy Group - C review and top euro fantasy assets

FIFA World Ranking: 24th
Qualification Record: W6, D2, L0
Goals For: 17
Goals Against: 4

Defense:

Ukraine won their qualifying group without defeat, leaving holders Portugal in second place. They have shown some resilience at the back and have only conceded 4 goals in 8 qualifier games. The two picks that stand out from their defense are Oleksandr Karavaev (5M) and Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko (5.5M). Karavaev is an attacking RB/RWB while Zinchenko is an out-of-position prospect as he usually fills in a midfield role with his country. Mykola Matvienko (4.5M) is usually a starter that can be considered if budget doesn’t allow a move for the aforementioned duo.

Attack:

One of the weaknesses in this Ukraine’s side is that they don’t score often and their recent World Cup qualifiers underlined such problems, being held to 1-1 draws with both Finland and Kazakhstan. A man in form is Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovskyi, who has 8 goals and 12 assists in Serie A this season and should be on most set pieces. Andriy Yarmolenko is always capable of moments of magic, yet he hasn’t played much club football this season and question marks could be raised on his sharpness. Roman Yaremchuk who had a respectable season scoring 20 goals and assisting 7 for his club Gent will lead the attack and is worth keeping an eye on especially for that North Macedonia game.

General Thoughts:

After being eliminated from the group stage at both Euro 2012 and 2016, losing five of their six matches in the process, Ukraine will arrive at Euro 2020 aiming to prove that they can reach the knockout stages. I personally believe that Shevchenko’s Yellow and Blue troops have a good chance of progressing and if their attack turns out to be more clinical than they have shown of late, they will be even capable of making life difficult for some “bigger” sides.

Austria:

Austria will look to fancy their chances in this group

FIFA World Ranking: 23rd
Qualification Record: W6, D1, L3
Goals For: 19
Goals Against: 9

Defense:

Austria has finished as runners-up to Poland in their qualification group and will enter Euro 2020 aiming to earn their first-ever win at a Euros tournament. The Austrian squad does include some quality names but it is fair to say that their defense has been leaky and resembles a major weakness for this team. Austria have defeated group-stage opponents North Macedonia home and away in the qualifiers but failed to keep a clean sheet in either game. Martin Hinteregger (4.5M) is a decent cheap choice for anyone expecting an improvement in this department as he offers the security in terms of starts and is a decent threat from set plays. Stefan Lainer (5M) is more expensive but is also a nailed starter and an attacking-minded right-back who has already contributed with 2 assists in the three recent World Cup qualifiers.

Attack:

The Austrians have genuine quality in midfield and attack and should not struggle to score goals. Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer should feature regularly and can fill in multiple positions, he had an average season at club level scoring 8 and assisting 3. David Alaba is classified as a midfielder in the game and that is where he plays most of the time with the national side, unlike at Bayern where he usually takes up the LB/CB spot. He is kindly priced at 5.5M and takes his fair share of free-kicks and corners.

Marko Arnautovic hasn’t been with the team for a long time due to travel restrictions, but was their top scorer in the qualifiers and has enough quality to shine this summer. Austria could also have one of the tournament’s breakout stars in Sasa Kalajdzic who has translated his club fine form into the national side over the last international break.

General Thoughts:

Despite their recent struggles, Austria should be favored to beat North Macedonia on their first outing, and that should enhance their position in making it through to the knockout stages. However, work on defensive stability is imminent if the Austrians are to progress beyond that level.

North Macedonia:

Elmas will look to continue his goal scoring run
Elmas will look to continue his goal scoring run

FIFA World Ranking: 62nd
Qualification Record: W4, D2, L4
Goals For: 12
Goals Against: 13

Defense:

North Macedonia had a very average qualifying campaign but managed to book their place in the summer showpiece by winning through the Nations League D playoffs. Defensively, the team only managed to keep 2 clean sheets in their 10 qualifiers and that clearly identifies a weakness for this side. Left-back Egzijan Alioski (4.5M) who is having a spectacular season with Leeds United in the Premier League is the standout pick here, mainly for his attacking style of play as well as being on penalties. Right-back Stefan Ristovski (4.0M) is also a decent pick if the extra 0.5 couldn’t be found for the obvious better pick Alioski.

Attack:

There is attacking potential on this team, as only Poland managed to keep a clean sheet against them in qualifiers. Napoli’s Eljif Elmas is the creative hub of this team (4 goals and 1 assist in qualifiers), while Levante’s Enis Bardhi (2 goals and 2 assists in qualifiers) supports the attack immensely so those are the two I would look at if I wanted a Macedonian midfielder. All eyes will be on 37-year-old Genoa striker Goran Pandev who holds the national goal-scoring record, and his recent goal against Germany shows that he still can be classified as a poacher regardless of his age.

General Thoughts:

After recently turning heads with their World Cup qualifying win away to Germany, the North Macedonians will be very excited to see if they can cause further upsets next month. Having some attacking talent, and being placed in an open-looking group will provide them every chance to believe. However, it is worth noting that clean sheets are rare for this team and their vulnerability at the back could kill their slim chances of making it through to the knockout phase.
