Euro Fantasy – Imaginary Limitless side for Matchday 1

The limitless chip is the chip that acts like a free hit, but with unlimited budget. Although you can’t actually use the ‘limitless’ chip in Matchday 1, this article will be what my limitless side would be if I could. It is aimed to help make the tougher decisions for your initial squad.

Matchday 1 ~ Goalkeepers:

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Gianluigi Donnarumma matchday 1

Italy have arguably the best defence in the competition. They have kept 16 clean sheets in their last 21 encounters, and didn’t concede more than one on any of the other five. Kicking-off the tournament on their own patch will also boost their chances. I am only covering the Italian defence with one defender though, as I think Turkey provide tough opposition and love a goal or two. Moreover, Donnarumma has a remarkable penalty record, and Turkey’s attack should mean a couple of saves; the likes of Hakan Calhanoglu and Burak Yilmaz love a long shot.

Kasper Schmeichel

Denmark’s opening fixture is likewise in their own stadium, and against a weak Finland side a clean sheet looks likely. The Danes also boast an excellent defensive record: they have kept 12 clean sheets in their last 18 ties, including the whole League A Nations League campaign. Remember to pick goalkeepers that play on different days!

Matchday 1 ~ Defenders

Ricardo Rodriguez

Rodriguez matchday 1

Rodriguez is one of the rare defenders to take penalties, and kicks off the Euro’s with a promising tie against Wales. The Swiss have a relatively strong defence, which goes well with Wales’ lack of goals. The Welsh have only completed in two games with over two goals in their last 12 competitive fixtures.

Joakim Mæhle

As mentioned, Denmark come into the tournament in excellent form and have a very appealing home opener. Mæhle is the Dane’s best attacking defender. He assisted six times for Atalanta this season and has two goals in only nine caps (at time of writing).

Leonardo Spinazzola

Italy go into the competition with the best defensive record and play on the first day – handy for manual substitiuions. Also, Spinazzola is Italy’s most attacking defender – he scored twice and assisted eight for Roma this season.

Maciej Rybus

Polish wing-back Rybus gets a share of set-pieces and finds himself in advanced positions. Poland have kept clean sheets against Italy, Bosnia and Ukraine this season and kick off with a kind opener against Slovakia. Even though it was over two years ago, the Poles also kept the most clean sheets of any team in qualifcation.

Joao Cancelo

Cancelo is Portugal’s most offensive full-back alongside Guerreiro, yet is €0.5m cheaper than Guerreiro and is certain to start. Even though the money doesn’t matter I’m going to pretend it does due to the fact the limitless chip can’t actually be played. Portugal play Hungary, who are without key-man Dominik Szoboszlai, and go into the match as massive underdogs. That being said, Hungary topped their League B group and come into the tournament with nothing to lose and in good form. Portugal have also conceded against Serbia and Luxembourg in shaky performances this year. However, I still think Cancelo is the stand-out premium defensive option this Matchday.

Matchday 1 ~ Midfielders

Eden Hazard

Belgium’s attack appeal most of any side to me in Matchday 1. They face a Russia side that they put seven past in two qualifying games and have a poor defensive record. The Russians have only kept two clean sheets since qualifying and they were against Hungary and Moldova. Belgium scored the most in qualifying and the Nations League top-tier. De Bruyne looks set to miss Matchday 1 after his collision in the Champions League Final, making Hazard the stand-out Belgian midfielder. Hazard is on penalties and scored a brace in both qualifying ties against Russia. Those four goals went toward his tally of five goals and seven assists in only eight qualifying appearences. He is a bit of punt though, having struggled this season with Real Madrid.

Christian Eriksen

Eriksen matchday 1

Christian Eriksen, like Hazard, has struggled this season domestically but still plays an integral part in his National Team sides’ attack. He has a very nice opening fixture, is on all set-pieces and penalties and was the Danes’ top scorer and top assister in qualifying with five goals and four assists in eight qualifying starts. Eriksen also has five goals this international campaign.

John McGinn

John McGinn scored seven and assisted two in seven qualifying starts and scored three in the March international break. He finds himself in the box much more than he does for club side Aston Villa. Scotland’s first game comes at home in front of the Tartan Army which is something to bear in mind. Czech Republic’s weakness is their defence and that was even before they lost their best centre half Ondrej Kudela to a long-term ban. Scotland also did the double over the Czech’s in the Nations League. Czech Republic only have one clean sheet in their last 15 ties, and just conceded four to Italy in an international friendly.

Georginio Wijnaldum

Gini Wijnaldum matchday 1

Georginio Wijnaldum has three goals and three assists in his last six Dutch caps, and smashed qualifying with eight goals and three assists in only seven starts. Ukraine have only kept two clean sheets since 2019, and in 2020 conceded 4 in an away tie against Spain, 7 away to France and 3 away to Germany.

Diogo Jota

Diogo Jota has found himself a spot in the Portuguese line-up after an excellent domestic season and six goals in six National starts this season. He managed a goal every 135 for Liverpool in all competitions this season: an excellent record. He also covers points somewhat for Ronaldo, who hasn’t made my side. Portugal go into the Hungary game as dominant favourites.

Matchday 1 ~ Forwards

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku was the first name in this team. He faces a weak side, is the focal point in a fantastic side and has a fantastic record of 14 goals and 5 assists in his last 13 caps. Not much more needed to say, just get him.

Robert Lewandowski

Robert lewandoski matchday 1

Robert Lewandowski is probably the biggest talisman of any side in the tournament. He scored 48 in only 40 appearances for Bayern Munich this season, as well 5 goals in 6 Polish starts. Slovakia are probably one of the weakest sides in the competition. In qualifying, they lost 4-0 and 5-1 to Croatia and this season have conceded 2 or more in a single match against Czech Republic, Israel and Malta.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane is by far England’s main goalscorer. He has had a phenomenal season and faces a Croatian side in questionable form. Croatia actually let in the second-most goals in the Nations League top tier, conceding 16 and will also be without their best centre half, Dejan Lovren. Kane got a goal and an assist in the most recent home game against the Croatians. He is deservedly one of the favorites to lift the tournament’s golden boot.

Notable options that missed out:

Gareth Bale, Lorenzo Insigne, Xherdan Shaqiri, Memphis Depay, Marko Arnautovic, Stefan Lainer, Cristiano Ronaldo, Che Adams.
