Euro Fantasy Football | Group – B~ Review, Analysis, and Top Fantasy Assets

A couple of days after looking at the options from Group A, it’s now time to explore another four teams taking part in the summer festival. In this blog, we take a look at the top fantasy choices from Euro Group B.

Euro Fantasy Football Group B analysis:

🇧🇪 Belgium:

Belgium are a formidable side ~ Euro Fantasy Group B assets
Belgium are a formidable side

FIFA World Ranking: 1st
Qualification Record: W10, D0, L0
Goals For: 40
Goals Against: 3

Defense: Belgium have won their qualification group easily, conceding only 3 goals (joint least) in 10 games. No one would question the quality of this Belgian squad and the fact that they are likely going to dominate most of their games means less pressure on their defense and higher chances of clean sheets. Belgium are most likely going to line up in a 3-4-3 formation and the RWB/RM role will be with either Castagne or Meunier – both classified as defenders and it’s safe to say that whoever nails that spot will be fantasy gold. Denayer is 4.5M and is expected to start but his attacking threat is limited, both Vertonghen and Alderweireld will fill the remaining pieces in this defense and have a more attacking presence than Denayer but are priced similarly to Castagne/Meunier so would leave us with a safe vs explosive dilemma.

Attack: It is safe to say that Belgium have the best set of midfielders/attackers in Europe and have scored 40 goals across the qualifiers, more than any other team. Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku represent two fantasy monsters and will be represented in a lot of teams. De Bruyne is the best midfielder in the world in my opinion and could line up in an advanced position (especially if Eden Hazard is not fit enough to start) which further increases his appeal, add to that the fact that he is on all set pieces (except penalties). Lukaku (on penalties) had an exceptional season with Serie A Champions Inter and has an excellent international record. Mertens is a viable option who should play a lot of minutes for those who can’t afford the big man, while Thorgan Hazard is expected to feature in the LWB/LM role.

General Thoughts: This could very well be the last chance for the Golden Generation of Belgium to claim a major trophy, and having the likes of De Bruyne, Lukaku, and Hazard (if he is fit and firing) should give them an edge overall opponents. They were unlucky to be eliminated by France in the last World Cup semis and expectations are even bigger this time. I personally expect them to score a lot of goals and go far in this tournament.

Top Euro Fantasy Choices from Belgium

🇷🇺Russia:

Russia group B euro fantasy analysis
Russia will look put up a good fight in this group

FIFA World Ranking: 38th
Qualification Record: W8, D0, L2
Goals For: 33
Goals Against: 8

Defense: Russia had no difficulties in finishing second in their qualifier group to book their presence in the elite tournament this summer. In those qualifiers however, they got beat badly by Belgium (who they will face again in group stages) 1-3 and 1-4. The Russian backline faced a noticeable drop of form after the retirement of veteran goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev and top defender Sergei Ignashevich. Mario Fernandes is your best bet from this defense due to his attacking threat (likely starting in a RWB/RM role) but unfortunately he is priced at 5.5M which is a lot for a Russian defender in my opinion. Other options are Dzhikiya and Kudryashov who are likely starters at 4.5M but again the defensive stability of this Russian squad is highly questionable.

Attack: The Russians have impressed attacking-wise recently and their star striker Artem Dzyuba has been in fine form scoring 20 goals in 27 games for club Zenit and 9 goals in the 10 qualifier games for Russia (plus assisting 5). Another talent to look at in this team is Alexsandr Golovin, who made a breakthrough at the World Cup and is currently having a fine season at Monaco getting himself involved in 14 goals over 20 games. Aleksei Miranchuk is a player to monitor but his starting role isn’t guaranteed and has been classified as a forward in the game which further limits his appeal.

General Thoughts: Russia has scored a lot of goals against the lesser sides, but have always struggled against better opposition. We have seen how vulnerable their defence can be, conceding 3 goals and 5 goals against Turkey and Serbia in the most recent Nations League, so an improvement in this department is imminent. On the other hand, Dzyuba and Golovin need to be at their best if they want to keep Russia’s hopes of making the knockout phase alive.

Top Fantasy Choices From Russia:

  • Dzyuba (Forward 8.5M)
  • Golovin (Midfielder 7.5M)
  • Fernandes (Defender 5.5M)

🇩🇰Denmark:

Denmark group B euro fantasy analysis
Denmark are an exiting team with good fantasy potential

FIFA World Ranking: 10th
Qualification Record: W4, D4, L0
Goals For: 23
Goals Against: 6

Defense: Denmark had an impressive qualification campaign, but what was more convincing is their Nations League performances where they more than held their own against two of the continent’s giants, England and Belgium. Defensively, the team has a strong spine represented by Kasper Schmeichel in goal (who likes a penalty save every now and then!), supported by Simon Kjaer and Andreas Christensen in the heart of the defense. Both Simon Kjaer and Joakim Maehle are kindly priced at 4.5M and should represent good value, the former is almost guaranteed to play every minute, while the latter is a bit more fun pick as he provides more attacking threat.

Attack: Denmark haven’t lost a single game in the qualifiers and have been scoring a lot of goals recently. The man in the heart of all their attacks is no one else but Christian Eriksen, the ex-Spurs star deploys a free roam role behind the striker and has a monopoly over all set pieces including penalties. The only downside is him being given a hefty price tag (9M) but with fantasy managers implementing different chip strategies, he could very well be a strong option for MD1 against Finland. Thomas Delaney and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are excellent football players but both are not attacking enough in my opinion. Jonas Wind (6M striker) had an impressive season with Copenhagen and should be one we keep an eye on in the next friendlies, but for now, he is far from nailed so keep it as a watchlist material.

General Thoughts: While the team is implementing a more stylish brand of football recently, I can strongly say that I tip Denmark to surprise a few this summer. This team has a world-class goalkeeper in possession, has been very resilient at the back, and got one of the most creative footballers in the world. The only weakness in this team is the lack of a proven striker, and if either Dolberg or Wind manages to hit a streak of form, then don’t be too shocked to see them pulling up some extraordinary results.

🇫🇮Finland:

Finland group B euro fantasy analysis
Pukki and Finland will look to go big this year

FIFA World Ranking: 54th
Qualification Record: W6, D0, L4
Goals For: 16
Goals Against: 10

Defense
: Finland has made it to their first major tournament and must be in a state of excitement to try how it feels like. Their qualification path was mixed between good performances at home and less than average performances away, but all in all, it was their home defensive form that made the difference, keeping four clean sheets in five games and only conceding to Italy. Goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky at 4M will grab respectable interest especially for those that prefer not to spend much on keepers, and is expected to be kept busy and accumulate some save points. Defenders Joona Toivio and Paulus Arajuuri were consistent starters during qualifiers and both are kindly priced at 4M too so could be decent squad fillers if you are trusting this Finnish side to cause any sort of upset.

Attack: Unfortunately, Finland are lacking in this department and their main sort of threat is presented by last season FPL dear Teemu Pukki. The Norwich City striker was crucial in Finland’s journey during qualifiers scoring 10 goals out of a total of 16 scored by his side. He also enjoyed another good season at club level scoring 26 goals and helping the Canaries earn their promotion back to the Premier League. Unfortunately, he sustained a recent ankle ligament and is currently undergoing recovery, yet he was selected in the preliminary Finnish squad and will hopefully be fit for the summer showpiece. Robin Lod (5.5M) is the other player worth a mention here given his eye on the goal and potential set-piece contribution.

General Thoughts: Although Finland’s mental strength particularly in defense has allowed them to achieve notable results against established European teams, I do believe this is a big step up for a team whose members have very little experience in European club competitions. The team will be over-reliant on talisman Pukki to carry them through and with the “injury scare” and the lack of other game-changing players, it will be really difficult to imagine Finland making it past the group stages.
