Euro Fantasy Football – The Best Budget Enablers in Each Position

This article will go through the best ‘budget enablers’ in each position on the official Euro 2020 Fantasy game. I have included forwards up to the value of €7.0m because I really think there is a lack of budget options there.

Goalkeepers (€4.5 or under):

Lukas Hradecky (€4.0) was probably the easiest pick on this list. He will have plenty of saves to make and plays in a conservative side. Finland kept three clean sheets in their six Nations League games, and have shown their ability to cause an upset with their shock 2-0 win away against France.

Defenders (€4.5 or under):

Image

Nico Elvedi (€4.5) has scored 5 goals for Borussia Mochengladbach this season and Switzerland have a decent opener vs Wales in terms of clean sheet potential. He is the cheapest starter of the Swiss defence, who have kept 2 clean sheets in their last 4 competitive fixtures and only conceded twice (including tough fixtures against Ukraine and Spain).

Welsh wing-backs Neco Williams (€4.5) and Connor Roberts (€4.5) provide both a decent attacking threat and cover into a fairly solid defence. Williams has a goal and assist in his nine caps, and can play on both the right and left side if needed. Swansea wing-back Roberts is accustomed to playing at wing-back, where he has totalled an impressive record of five goals and seven assists in the Championship this season. Wales have boasted a decent defensive record of late. They kept five clean sheets in their six Nations League ties, and six of their eight qualifying games involved two goals or less.

Danish left-back Joakim Mæhle (€4.5) is very kindly priced and offers the most goal threat of the back four. He is very likely to start, and can play both left and right back if needed. He has scored two goals in eight caps and has a goal and six assists this season domestically. He also has a fantastic opening fixture against Finland.

Dutch left-back Owen Wijndal (€4.5) is a cheap way into a decent defence. He is likely to start at left-back, where he has two goals and six assists for club side AZ Alkmaar this season. Furthermore, he has a decent international record, with three assists in seven caps!

North Macedonia’s wing back Egzijan Alioski (€4.5) is generously classified as a defender. He takes the penalties and some of the set-pieces! Also, he has four goal involvements in nine international appearances this season, and 18 in his 41 caps. There’s the added (albeit unlikely) chance of clean sheet points too.

Slovakian left-back David Hancko (€4.5) has scored 7 goals for club Sparta Prague in just 27 appearances this season. Significantly, he has a genuine chance of taking penalties as he does for his club side. However, it is unclear who in the Slovakian side will take that responsibility. In addition, he also gets forward for corners, which is unusual for a full-back. Clean sheets are very unlikely, however.

Pau Torres (€4.5) looks set to start for Spain. The Spaniards topped their strong Nations League group (with Switzerland, Germany, and Ukraine), keeping three clean sheets out of a possible six. However, Spain have failed to keep a clean sheet in their three World Cup qualifiers, despite facing minnows Kosovo, Georgia, and Greece. Sergio Ramos started in the three Nations League clean sheets, whereas all the goals conceded in the World Cup qualification occurred when he wasn’t on the pitch. Ramos isn’t in the squad so I am worried about their defensive security. Torres is a great pick if you think Spain will cope alright without him.

Midfielders (€6.5 or under)

Image

Domenico Berardi (€6.0). We will know if he starts in match-day one. He is Italy’s top scorer this season with 4 goals in 5 games. He also has 16 goals and 6 assists this season for mid-table side Torino in the Serie A. However, he faces competition from Federico Chiesa. Berardi has the second most passes into the penalty area in Europe’s top five divisions (only beaten by Messi), and ranks tenth in the charts for most shots per 90.

Image

Yusuf Yazici (€5.5) has 7 goals and 4 assists in Ligue 1 this season, in only 1000 minutes. He has the potential to play out-of-position and assisted 2 goals in the last international break. He looks very likely to start after winger Cengiz Under had a disappointing season at Leicester. Furthermore, he gets a share of the set-pieces and has formed a strong partnership with club team-mate Burak Yilmaz. Not only that, but he even plays a very attacking side

Czech Republic winger Jakub Jankto (€6.0) will get more of a share of left-footed set-pieces after his set-piece partner Lukas Provod was ruled out of the Championships. Jankto has a goal and three assists in his last 4 caps. Those indirect free kicks can be useful given the height of the centre halves, Schick and Soucek. Jankto often finds himself in central positions and loves a shot from deep. In a team that I expect will score quite a few goals, Jankto is the stand-out option in my opinion, and he’s priced very decently.

Wales winger Dan James (€6.5) has the most goal involvements for Wales this season with two goals and two assists. He’s also nailed to start. He will be a big threat on the counter-attack, particularly against possession based Italy.

Image

Croatia’s Nikola Vlasic (€6.5) scored 3 times in 6 qualifying games. He has 11 goals and 5 assists for CSKA Moscow in the Russian League this season. He was Croatia’s joint top-scorer in the recent Nations League campaign, with 2 goals and an assist after starting all 6. Generous price.

Forwards (€7.0 or under)

Image

Forward Marko Arnautovic (€7.0) was Austria’s top scorer in qualifying with 6 goals in 8 starts. He is expected to take the penalties too. Coronavirus travel restrictions banned him from joining up with the squad in recent international breaks. He continues to score goals in the Chinese Super League, with 19 goals in 28 appearences. He does face pressure from Sasa Kalajdzic, who has impressed in the Bundesliga this season, with 15 goals, but I think he’ll start. I really the look of the opener against North Macedonia.

Jonas Wind (€6.0) handy price makes him an interesting option. He has three goals and an assist in less than 300 minutes of international football and looks like he might have cemented down a starting place. He plays his football in the Danish first division and has 15 goals and seven assists in all domestic competitions this season. Moreover, he has a fantastic opener against Finland.

Image

Teemu Pukki (€7.0) is the go-to Finnish pick. He scored 10 of their 16 goals in the qualifying and in his last four international starts, he has scored five of the six Finland goals so it is fair to say he is their talisman. He has been on fire once again in the Championship, scoring 26 goals for Norwich. Unsurprisingly, he is the Finnish penalty taker.

Image

Ukraine forward Roman Yaremchuk (€7.0) plays his football in the Belgium first division and has 22 goals and 7 assists in 40 appearances in all competitions this season. He was Ukraine’s top scorer in qualifying with 4 goals and 2 assists in 6 starts. However since qualifying, he only has 3 goals in 11 appearances. Still not a bad record, and one to consider.

Scottish forward Che Adams (€6.5) only declared himself to the national team in March, so only has 3 caps. However, he started impressively with a goal and assist in his only two starts. Furthermore, he racked up 9 goals and 5 assists in a decent Premier League campaign. Scotland start the competition with a fixture against a leaky Czech defence.
