Euro Fantasy | Matchday 3 Limitless Team Selection

The plan to play my limitless chip in Euro Fantasy Matchday 3 hasn’t been perfect so far, but it hasn’t been bad either. I was hoping that the Netherlands would clinch the top spot so the likes of Depay, Wijnaldum, and Weghorst would face the North Macedonia defense, but that wasn’t to be. Meanwhile, as I was strapped for cash on my Wildcard, I had to save cash by going for Ruslan Malinovskyi over Andriy Yarmolenko, and Artem Dzyuba over Memphis Depay. On the flip side, I opted for Domenico Berardi over Lorenzo Insigne and avoided Mario Fernandes to save money. Going forward, Roberto Martinez’s revelation that Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne will start against Finland is good news. They are now locked into my side.

My current side

I am planning to open Matchday 3 with double Italian defence pairing Emerson and Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri. Italy’s set-up allows the left-back lots of attacking freedom, with the right back playing more reserved. As well as that, Italy boast one of the best defensive records, playing a Welsh side that aren’t that potent in front of goal. Just before the tournament, Wales failed to score against both France and England. I’m slightly tempted by Federico Chiesa, who enjoyed a fantastic domestic season, but he only has the single goal in 27 caps. In the other game, I think I’m going with Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri.

He is arguably Switzerland’s talisman, takes direct set-pieces, loves a shot and I don’t think he’d be subbed off when the side needs a goal. Not only is the game a must-win, but also comes against Turkey – arguably the worst team in the competition. Gareth Bale could have had a hatful on Wednesday, and Wales totaled a ridiculous 3.71 xG. I also like Breel Embolo. He has really impressed me. I would say he was the only positive to come out of the Italian game and looked great against Wales. He seems like the type of player to try and do things on his own when things aren’t going to plan. Another option worth considering is penalty-taking wing-back Ricardo Rodriguez, who also gets a good share in set-pieces. However, I actually see Turkey scoring.

The following day sees Ukraine face Austria, which should see goals but doesn’t appeal to me that significantly. Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk should fare well against Austria’s high line, whilst Ruslan Malinovskyi has thoroughly impressed me. His bad lack should change soon. I think there are better assets elsewhere though, and I like picking players who are involved in a high percentage of their team’s goals.

On simultaneously is Netherlands’ nothing-game against North Macedonia. They should field a completely second-string side (if you want to see my line-up predictions, check out my pinned tweet @CoysFPL). Forward Donyell Malen will want to put himself into knockout stage line-up contention and scored 27 goals for PSV last season. I’m not thinking twice about including him; North Macedonia have conceded the most big chances of any side so far. I also like wing-back Owen Wijndal.

The wing-backs play nice and high, as we’ve seen from Denzel Dumfries. You’d have to argue that the Netherlands have a decent chance of a clean sheet. Joel Veltman should start in place of Dumfries, but Wijndal’s attacking numbers for the club are superior and Veltman is at risk from dropping into the back three. Luuk de Jong and Davy Klaassen are also two nice options. The former had a poor domestic season but scored three in three in March’s World Cup Qualifiers. Klaassen scored 16 for Ajax last season so is another good option.

Later that day, I’m backing Belgian attacking pair Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne, who Martinez has confirmed will start. The former is on penalties and some set-pieces, whilst you only need watch a few seconds of de Bruyne’s second half display against Denmark to justify his name in my side. Thibaut Courtois is the best defensive option in my opinion. There is a chance Thomas Meunier starts due to the injury of Timothy Castagne, making him one of the best options of the Matchday. There aren’t many defenders in game that match the attacking prowess of him. Dedryck Boyata and Thomas Vermaelen should also start, but their attacking threat is minimal, so I suggest going for other more attacking defenders.

In the key encounter between Russia and Denmark, Daniel Wass is a good option. If Jonas Wind isn’t on the pitch, I think Wass will take penalties. He is also taking set-pieces and playing as a wing-back. They play at home against a Russian side that haven’t impressed me. Pre tournament, Denmark boasted one of the best defensive records of the 24, with three clean sheets in League A of the Nations League, and a further six clean sheets in the other seven encounters since September.

The following day sees Czech Republic face England and Croatia face Scotland. The Czech Republic – England game doesn’t really appeal to me. England’s best attacking options aren’t on form. The likes of John Stones and Jordan Pickford do appeal to me, but I think the Czech’s will provide the most attacking threat of England’s three Group Stage opponents. Despite Scotland impressing against England, I still think Croatia will come out on-top in their encounter.

Ivan Perisic and Luka Modric are the best options for Croatia in my opinion. Modric is on penalties and set-pieces, whilst Perisic is probably the Croatian’s main goal threat. Both are expected to play 90 minutes. Perisic was involved in the joint-most goals in the qualifying campaign, with three goals and two assists in eight, and scored Croatia’s only goal of the competition so far. I think their are better options across the Matchday, but it is wise to cover players on every single day.

The final day is the most intriguing from a Fantasy perspective. Spain and Germany face Slovakia and Hungary respectively, both needing to win. For that reason, Jose Gaya, Gerard Moreno, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller and Robin Gosens make my side. Enrique has suggested that he will rest Jordi Alba for one of the group games, so Gaya makes my side. The Slovakian game looks great in terms of clean sheet potential, and Gaya has two goals and four assists in 14 caps, and made seven goals for Valencia last season. Gerard Moreno might not make my final side due to the uncertainty of him starting, but should he start, he looks a fine option. He scored a whopping 30 goals for Villarreal last season, and should get the majority of Spanish chances.

Not only that, but he should be the designated penalty taker – he took twelve for Villarreal last season, boasting a perfect record. Robin Gosens is one of the first players in my side. Firstly, he faces a Hungary side that despite shocking France will struggle for goals, and secondly Gosens is probably the most attacking defender in the game. He scored 12 goals and assisted eight for Atalanta last season, and scored and assisted in the last friendly pre-tournament.

Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller are the most prominent figures in the attack. Gnabry has a great international record with 16 in 21 caps (at time of writing), and loves a game against weaker opposition. He was the top scorer in qualifying, with eight in seven, and is playing out of position as a centre forward. Meanwhile, Muller totaled a remarkable 15 goals and 24 assists last season for Bayern Munich and should play 90 minutes.
