Best FPL GW17 Budget Enablers

Budget Enablers Goalkeepers (£4.5 or below)

Finding the right budget GK is about finding a team with a defensive system that takes on poor shots frequently, and a performing defense. It is often hard to find both traits in a 4.5m/4.0m player, as a result, the keepers with a weak defensive line are valued less. I like to target keepers with strong save pts potential in order to counter fewer clean sheet pts. Below are my two recommendations:

Danny Ward (4.0m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Danny Ward

As we have seen in the first half of the season, Ward is a permanent fixture in that LEI backline, and capable of big returns. After a poor start of 8pts in 8 GWs, Ward picked up 52 pts in the next 8 games. GW 9-16: 3.125 saves/p90, 6.5 pts/pg, 8 bonus pts in 4/8 fixtures. Incredibly good numbers, attributed to a Rodgers revival after sitting in relegation spots early on. I found LEI to often get quite lucky to get clean sheets over this run of good form, expecting numbers to fall, but he still represents the go-to GK budget enabler.

Fixtures (GW 17-21): NEW, liv, FUL, nfo, BHA

Jordan Pickford (4.5m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Pickford

My recommendation to pair w/ Ward would be Pickford. Despite Everton struggling to find form, Lampard’s system is perfectly set up for Pickford to rack up save pts. Pickford has only managed 3 CS’s in 14 GWs, but ranks 2nd (60) for saves just behind Raya (64). Pickford picked up a save pt in 10/14 GWs so far, getting 2 save pts on 3 occasions. Everton will continue to concede shots as a result of their tendency to sit in deep; if CS numbers can improve, Pickford’s save potential plus an improvement on their 21% CS rate, could make him a very sought-after 4.5m option.

Fixtures (GW 17-21): WOL, mci, BHA, SOU, whu. Worth noting, pairing Pickford/Ward will mean playing liv/mci in GW18.

Jordan Pickford vs Danny Ward (via FFFix): stats p/90

As previously mentioned, Pickford has strong numbers for saves p/g, but his defense is letting him down. Danny Ward dominates Pickford in every aspect except saves, but do we expect him to keep it up? At 4.0m, there is no reason to not pick Ward, but I would be surprised to see LEI collecting CS’s at the same rate. Due to semi-difficult fixtures for both LEI & EVE from GW17-21, it may be worth looking at more expensive GK assets like Ramsdale (4.9m) or Pope (5.3m).

Budget Enablers Defenders (£4.9 or below)

Nathan Patterson (4.0m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Patterson

Patterson has had a comfortable introduction to PL life, and has confidently cemented his starting spot at RB/RWB. At 4.0m, Patterson offers a consistent stream of points with the potential for the odd CS + attacking return. 0.15 xGI p/90 for a 4.0m DEF asset is more than expected from someone of that price. Additionally, Patterson’s heatmap shows his ability to get down the right wing for EVE, but his presence in the box is limited. In my opinion, best set and forget DEF enabler asset.

Hugo Bueno (3.9m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Hugo Bueno

The alternative or possible double-up to Patterson is Bueno (3.9m). Bueno cemented his starting spot prior to the WC break, and hasn’t looked back! Wolves just hired Lopetegui over the break, a very good manager who I expect to improve that WOL side. Whether Bueno continues as a starter is sort of unknown due to the managerial switch, but at 3.9m, it may be worth the risk. He has been playing over the WC for wolves, scoring 1G in a 1-1 draw vs Empoli. 90 mins in the cup vs Gillingham seems promising! Patterson > Bueno for now, but worth monitoring.

Fixtures (GW17-21): eve, MUN, avl, WHU, mci.

Diogo Dalot (4.8m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Diogo Dalot

A more expensive ‘budget’ option, but at 4.8m, Dalot represents incredible value. Ten Haag plays Dalot as an inverted right-wing back, and he is instrumental in MUN’s build-up. I believe due to his passing involvement, Dalot has immense bonus point potential. So far, in the 22/23 season, Dalot has accumulated 3 bonus pts on 4 different occasions. Tripper the only DEF asset with more.

On top of Dalot’s BPS potential, MUN has improved immensely at the back, and I expect them to consistently pick up CS’s over the 2nd half of the season. 0.14 xGI is nothing special, but once you add in CS + BPS potential, Dalot could consistently haul. Dalot accumulated above 8 pts on 4 different occasions this season, in all 4 fixtures he picked up maximum Bonus points.

The most attractive factor is when MUN keeps a CS, Dalot will likely receive Bonus Points. It’s worth noting, Dalot was missing from training recently so it may be assumed he’s recovering from an injury.

Fixtures: NFO, wol, BOU, MCI, ars

Honorable Mention:

White (4.7m), Botman (4.4m), Perraud (4.4m)

Budget Enablers Midfielders: (£6.0m or less)

Miguel Almiron (5.8m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Almiron

Almiron was the star budget option for the first half of the season picking up 93 pts over 15 games, the most of any MID. 8 goals. 2 assists, and 9 bonus points is incredible value for someone who started at 5.0m. Almiron has accumulated 0.4 xGI p/90 so far, taking 2.63 shots p/90, and 0.78 attempted assists p/90. 8 goals from 4.64 xG is overperforming, so I expect him to contribute less in the 2nd half of the season; however, at 5.8m, a nailed Almiron playing for an in-form NEW is a very exciting prospect. Almiron’s heatmap proves how he takes 1.85 SiB p/90, and I expect his penalty box presence to continue.

Fixtures: lei, LEE, ars, FUL, cry

Andreas Periera (4.6m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Andreas Pereira

Periera has been a brilliant budget option so far this season, accumulating 2G & 4A. You can expect to him to pick up hauls every now and then, with a guarantee of minutes. He is on corners, some set pieces, and as shown below in the heat map can get into dangerous spots outside of the box. Periera picked up 2.23 xG & 1.89 xA, quite in line with his stats so I expect him to give similar returns. 0.30 xGI p/90 is very solid at 4.5m, especially as his minutes are secure.

Unless you want 5 expensive midfielders, Periera should likely be your 5th midfielder. 0.36 SiB p/90 means he rarely gets into the box, but from the eye he is often in dangerous spots and always invovled near the final ball. Additionally, 2.52 attempted assists but only 0.29 BC tells us most of his chances created are from less dangerous areas. DGW in GW19!

Fixtures: cry, SOU, lei, CHE, new

Crysencio Summerville (4.4m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Summerville

Summerville is a very interesting punt, and could provide a much more explosive alternative to Periera as a 5th mid. For comparison, Summerville has 5 attacking returns in 467 mins, and Periera has 7 in 1240 mins. Periera’s benefit is a guarantee of minutes which Summerville may or may not have. Summerville got his first start in GW12, and went on to register 33 pts from GW13-GW16 prior to the WC break.

Summerville registered 0.47 xGI p/90, strong numbers, especially with mixed minutes; however, most notably, he has picked up 2.09 shots p/90, 1.71 shots in the box, and 0.95 attempted assists p/90, incredibly strong numbers and shows his explosive impact in the final third. He was recently injured in a friendly this month but is only doubtful. I would continue to monitor Leeds’s forums for information on his chances to start, but if available and likely to start, I believe he can be an explosive enabler. Fixtures: MCI, new, WHU, avl, BRE

Honorable Mention:

Xhaka (5.1m), Rodrigo (4.9m), Benrahma (5.6m)

Budget Enablers Forwards: (£7.0m or less)

Anthony Martial (6.7m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Martial

Martial has been an ‘option’ at random points throughout the season, but now Ronaldo is gone, it may be the best time. Martial started up top in both of MUN’s winter break friendlies, grabbing 1G against Cadiz. MUN lost both games, but you’d expect with a full squad back their good form will continue. Martial, alongside Rashford, are both very attractive options. Despite only appearing in 5 games with limited minutes, Martial scored 2G from 5 shots, and created 3 KP, accumulating  2.33 xG & 1.20 xA. When he is on the field, he is dangerous, and if Ten Haag remains confident in him he could be a great option. If interested in taking a punt, Martial’s next 3 fixtures provide a great opportunity to return big.

Fixtures: NFO, wol, bou, MCI, ars

Eddie Nketiah (6.5m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Nketiah

As a result of Gabriel Jesus picking up an injury at the World Cup, Nketiah will likely be Arsenal’s no9. We’ve seen in previous seasons his ability to score and provide value for FPL managers. It may be a prudent pick, but he started their past 3 mid-season friendlies and most ARS fans would expect it to remain so. It is possible ARS pick up an ST in the January transfer window, but for now, Nketiah’s minutes seem secure. Nketiah has featured in 14 games this season all from the bench providing 0 returns. Despite no recent form, he’s the clear backup, and I’m likely to put my faith in him.

Dominic Solanke (5.8m):

FPL GW17 Budget Enablers ~ Solanke

Solanke might not be the most exciting option, but if you can’t find a 3rd striker, and want to play safe, Solanke should tick a long over the season. Currently, 7th highest scoring FWD (57pts), while BOU also showed they are capable, netting 18 goals in 15 games. Solanke’s numbers are quite strong for a budget FWD option, accumulating 0.25 xG + 0.12 xA = 0.37xGI. At 5.8m, it seems reasonable, even if boring. 2.17 shots with 1.67 SoT, meaning, when Solanke does shoot it is often in good positions. With CHE (A) & MUN (A) in the next 3 fixtures, there is no rush, but with a good 5th midfielder/5th defender, it is very possible to bench Solanke over these 2 and play him against the likes of CRY (H), BRE (A), NFO (H).

Fixtures: che, CRY, mun, bre, NFO. In my opinion, Martial > Nketiah > Solanke
