Best FPL Goalkeepers to Consider From FPL GW17 | GK Analysis

As the World Cup has come to an end and the Premier League is set to return, attention for FPL managers is turning to finalising our squads ahead of the resumption. One of the areas in which there has been some debate over is the goalkeepers slot. You could conceivably make the case for a number of players and in this FPL GW17 Goalkeepers article, we’ll put forward our arguments for each of them.

David De Gea £4.9M, TSB: 7.3%

United’s fixture run has been highlighted as one of the better ones, if not the best. They start with a run of Nottingham Forest (H) Wolves (A) and Bournemouth (H). Many will be starting with Diogo Dalot, but in what is likely to be a very congested template, a differential strategy may be to double up on the United defence. Martinez and Varane likely won’t be back for the first game due to their World Cup participation and with the congestion of fixtures, there may well be rotation at left-back. Therefore, De Gea is probably the only member of that defence besides Dalot who is nailed.

Prior to the World Cup, United kept 3 clean sheets in 6 so their defence is far more trustworthy than what it was last season. That being said, it’s still not entirely penetrable and De Gea still has his fair share of saves to make.

Beyond the immediate run, United play Man City and Arsenal back to back, however, it’s another long stretch of green after that so all in all he should be a great pick.

Man United are also defeinsvely better at home with all of their last three clean sheets coming in home games. In the next 6 games, Man united play at home 4 times, with only Man City a tricky fixture with the other three games being Forest, Bournemouth and Palace.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, £4.5Million, TSB: 2.3%

Best FPL Goalkeepers to Consider From FPL GW17 ~ Kepa Arrizabalaga

Before we broke for the World Cup, it was thought that Kepa would start in the majority of teams. His run of three consecutive clean sheets, in which he managed 24 points, already had many talking about him.

Not only does Kepa have the form, but he also has the fixtures to go with it. In their first 7, they play Bournemouth (H), Nottingham Forest (A), Fulham (A) Palace (H), and Fulham (H) so it’s as good a run as De Gea’s if not better. Kepa also has a double in GW19 against MCI(H) and Fulham(A).

Another parallel with United for Chelsea is that there’s no assurance of their other defensive assets as it stands. Were he is fully fit, James would be in many a team but uncertainty about how his fitness will be managed means that few will go there. At center back, it’s any guess as to who starts from one game to the next and the same can be said for left wingback.

The only factor detracting from Kepa being top of this list is the looming shadow of his foot injury. At the time of writing, it’s unclear as to whether he’ll be fit for GW17. If it emerges that he has even a chance of featuring, it could be worth going with him with the comfort of knowing that you have Danny Ward as cover if Kepa doesn’t start.

Latest Kepa Injury update:

Kepa has trained and was pictured in training photos. At the moment it looks like he will start GW17. When talking about injuries, Potter didn’t mention about Kepa which is a good sign.

Nick Pope £5.3Million, TSB: 21.6%

Best FPL Goalkeepers to Consider From FPL GW17 ~ Nick Pope
Newcastle United Fixtures from FPL GW17 to GW23

Where the first two are picks more so due to fixtures, Pope undeniably has the form. Newcastle have the best defensive record in the league, conceding only twice in their last 6 fixtures, a run which contained Tottenham, Chelsea, and Man United. Pope has been a popular choice all season and will probably be in numerous teams on the other side.

There are however a couple of reasons for why he isn’t higher up on this list. Firstly, their fixtures of Leicester (A), Leeds (H), and Arsenal (A) aren’t the best, but as previously alluded to, that shouldn’t be too big an issue. The more pressing matter is that because of just how solid Newcastle have been, Pope hasn’t really had much to do so his ceiling is often 6 points. If you’re looking for up side, you may be inclined to move away from him but he’s undoubtedly among the safer option to go for.

What may also influence your thinking is that most will be on Kieran Trippier so you aren’t really gaining anything from a Newcastle clean sheet unless you double up.

Danny Ward £4.1Million, TSB: 28.8%

Leicester fixtures from FPL GW17 to GW23

You may be wondering why Ward is on this list, after all, he’ll probably be in every single squad as the bench keeper. However, it could be viable to go with him as your first choice and double up with Iversen(3.9 Million). A few opted for this strategy at the start of the season and were burnt by it as Leicester were diabolical defensively. In their last 8 though, they’ve been a different outfit all together keeping 6 clean sheets with Ward being the highest-scoring keeper in the game over that period. As such, if Leicester can maintain something even similar to that they’ve demonstrated in the last few GWs spending only £8M on your keepers may be well worth the saving.

Their fixtures are a mixed bag. Thought their first two of Newcastle (A) and Liverpool (H) aren’t especially appealing, following that they don’t face a top 6 side until GW23.

Other decent GK Options to consider:

Best FPL Goalkeepers to Consider From FPL GW17 ~ Ramsdale
  • Bernd Leno (£4.5 Million, TSB: 1.7%)- The former Arsenal man, has a double in GW19(Leicester & Chelsea), 3rd highest for saves amongst goalkeepers(59) but has kept only 2 clean sheets and Fulham have been leaky defensively.
  • Aaron Ramsdale £4.9 Million, TSB: 11.3%) – Ramsdale has the joint most CS(7) along with Pope but only thing that goes against him as an option are the fixtures with Arsenal playing Newcastle, Brighton, Spurs and Man United in the 4 out of the next 5 fixtures and he takes up a Arsenal spot. White(£4.7 Million) comes at a lesser price and could offer attacking returns as well. But interestingly Ramsdale and Ward rotate well as seen below. If you’re okay with rotating your GKs then go for it:)
Arsenal and Leicester defence rotate well

Why no premium goalkeepers?

The beady-eyed of you will have noticed that we haven’t selected any premium options in this list. This is primarily because of the value that the above options present. Its well documented that Ederson’s ceiling is generally 6 points an Allison has hardly been part of a solid defence this season so the two really don’t stand out as being worthwhile picks.
