Man City GW1-16 Review & Best Man City FPL assets from GW17

Almost halfway through the FPL season, what have we learned about Man City FPL assets so far?

In this article, I will review Gameweeks 1-16 and share my perspective on how to approach Man City’s assets for our FPL GW17 squads. For weekly Man City content (including lineup predictions and starting odds) and general FPL threads, check me out on Twitter @4lex_mcfc!

Man City GW1-16 Review

So far this season, Man City have won 10 games, lost 2, and drawn 2. They have scored 40 goals (2.86/game, 27.6 xG) and conceded 14 goals (1.00/game, 11.2 xGA). Since I last reviewed City’s season after GW8, their attacking stats have dropped off a little. At that point, City were on pace to score 125 goals this season and now they are on pace to score around 108 goals. This is a more realistic figure, and it would be slightly above average compared to what we are used to seeing under Pep. In defense, City are underperforming (perhaps better said as their opponents are overperforming) and they are on pace to have a slightly worse defensive record than we are used to seeing under Pep. Overall, relative to the past few seasons, this makes City’s attacking assets generally more attractive and their defensive assets generally less attractive.

Top 10 Man City FPL Points GW1-16

Top 10 Man City FPL Points GW1-16
  1. Haaland (12.2 m FWD) – 123 pts
  2. De Bruyne (12.6 m MID) – 90 pts
  3. Foden (8.3 m MID) – 76 pts
  4. Cancelo (7.4 m DEF) – 70 pts
  5. Bernardo (6.9 m MID) – 64 pts
  6. Ederson (5.4 m GK) – 57 pts
  7. Gundogan (7.3 m MID) – 45 pts
  8. Dias (5.9 m DEF) – 40 pts
  9. Rodri (5.6 m MID) – 38 pts
  10. Alvarez (6.0 m FWD) – 32 pts

Man City have 6 assets who have performed a level above the rest. To no surprise, Haaland sits atop the list with KDB a little way behind. Then, Foden and Cancelo are a level or two below KDB. Lastly, Bernardo and Ederson boast decent campaigns, just behind them.

Projecting Season Totals

Past FPL points are not always a good indicator of future FPL points, but in this case, I think it is safe to say that these 6 assets will continue (relatively closely) along these trajectories. All of their minutes and roles are relatively secure, and 14 games played is a large enough sample size to apply across a 38-game season. If we average their points per game across an entire season, here is what those 6 assets are on pace for:

  1. Haaland – 333 pts
  2. De Bruyne – 244 pts
  3. Foden – 206 pts
  4. Cancelo – 190 pts
  5. Bernardo – 173 pts
  6. Ederson – 154 pts

Due to the rigorous winter schedule, and assuming City progress into the latter rounds of the UCL, we could see a dip in these numbers (aside from Ederson) due to heavier rotation. However, I believe these figures are a relatively good indicator of what to expect. If this is accurate (plus/minus 10 points), the top 4 would all have exceptional FPL seasons, with Bernardo and Ederson having good (but not great) seasons.

Looking Ahead to GW17 and Beyond

Upcoming fixtures

Here is how Man City’s schedule looks over the next 10 Gameweeks:

  • GW17 – lee
  • GW18 – EVE
  • GW19 – che
  • DGW20* – mun + TOT
  • GW21 – WOL
  • GW22 – tot
  • DGW23 – AVL + ars
  • GW24 – nfo
  • GW25 – bou
  • GW26 – NEW

* = The TOT fixture has about a 30% chance of being rescheduled, depending on the cup draw

In this run, City’s fixtures are mixed. They are not outstandingly good or bad, and the inclusion of 1-2 Double Gameweeks makes City assets a bit tastier than usual. Owning at least one City asset alongside Haaland should probably be the aim, so who do we go with?

Before going further do vote in FPL GW17 Captaincy Poll below. The metrics has a 12/15 successful returns record this season. Do vote in the captaincy poll for this week below. The captaincy metrics blog from @AK_FPL1 will be posted soon based on the votes.

Assessing Man City’s top 6 FPL assets Ahead of FPL GW17

Erling Haaland – What is there to talk about at this point? He is an FPL machine, potentially the best asset the game has ever seen. Put him in your squad and captain him most weeks, unless you are either brave, stubborn, or masochistic.

Assessing Man City's top 6 FPL assets from FPL GW17 ~ KDB and Haaland

Kevin De Bruyne KDB is the second most explosive asset in the Man City squad. Accordingly, he is priced at a premium: 12.6 million. In general, there is not much I have to say about KDB. He is the second most nailed attacker in the team when fit, he produces at an extremely high and consistent rate when playing, and he is the fifth-highest overall scorer so far this season. He is always a great pick, it just comes down to who you want as a second and/or third premium. If you like Bruno, Kane, or Salah better, then go with them. In my opinion, picking between them comes down to personal judgement.

Assessing Man City's top 6 FPL assets from FPL GW17 ~ Phil Foden

Phil Foden – Where do I start? He is one of my favorite Man City players, but he is such a frustrating FPL asset. As soon as you think he has found a hot streak, he goes cold. As soon as you think he is nailed, he gets benched twice in a row. In theory, he is a great asset. He should start about 75% of games, he has double-digit haul potential, and he is generously priced at 8.3 million; but, he is just not a predictable FPL asset. While the upcoming DGWs look tasty, Foden is certainly at risk to 1/2.

Personally, I am not really considering Foden on my GW17 Wildcard, as much as I would like to. In my opinion, Bukayo Saka (8.0 m) offers just as much as Foden with a more consistent route to FPL points (due to xMins and penalties). Doubling up on both could be on the cards, depending on how you want to utilize your 5 MID spots. For me, I am looking at two premiums, Saka, and two cheaper MIDs – so Foden is not a viable pick unless I downgrade a premium. If you are looking to own Foden, I would recommend owning him over a long period of time – just put him in your team and do not think about him unless he gets injured.

Assessing Man City's top 6 FPL assets from FPL GW17 ~ Joao Cancelo

Joao Cancelo Cancelo is the most nailed Man City defender by far (ignoring Ederson). Avoiding injury, he will likely be benched less than five times all season. For one of the best defenses in the league, a nailed defender is a gem of an FPL asset. However, Cancelo is no longer a no-brainer pick, as he once was. In my opinion, there are three main caveats with Cancelo: he costs 7.4 million, his underlying attacking stats are about a third of last season’s, and there are cheaper alternatives on other elite defenses (Arsenal and Newcastle). In my opinion, Cancelo is an above-average pick, but he is not a great asset anymore. When 4.9 million Fabian Schar is only three points behind Cancelo all season, I really begin to question Cancelo’s spot in my team. I think there is an argument to be made with Cancelo either way, so trust your judgement and go with the side you believe in.

Assessing Man City's top 6 FPL assets from FPL GW17 ~ Bernardo Silva

Bernardo Silva – Bernardo is like Phil Foden-lite. He comes in at 6.9 million (1.4 m cheaper than Foden) and is the third most nailed attacker after Haaland and KDB. Like Foden, Bernardo is an unpredictable asset. He sort of stumbles into returns and slowly ticks along. Therefore, he is also best owned over a long period of time. He will likely finish around 10th for total MID points at the end of the season (currently 12th). At that price, he is competing with the likes of Rashford and Almiron, but they are all in the similar FPL assets. If you prefer Bernardo to the others, and think the (approximately) 10th-highest-scoring MID in the game is good value at 6.9 m, Bernardo is a good pick.

Ederson – Lastly, we have Ederson. When we look at City in a vacuum, he seems like a great pick. You get a nailed defensive asset on one of the best defenses in the league. However, with GKs, we always need to compare them to each other. Ederson is only the 9th highest-scoring GK this season. City do not give up many shots, so Ederson is typically a 2 or 6-point asset. He is the definition of a safe coverage pick, but he lacks the ceiling of other goalkeepers. I would not criticize anyone who picked Ederson, I would probably just say you are a bit boring.

Akanji, Stones, or Walker over Cancelo from FPL GW17?

Akanji, Stones, or Walker over Cancelo from FPL GW17?

With any of City’s other defenders, rotation will be constant. In my opinion, Akanji, Dias, Laporte, Stones, and Walker (and Ake, to a degree) will all rotate about an equal amount. You can expect them to start about 60% of the time, on average.

They all offer about equal goals, and bonus potential, and none of them sub on very often, so it really comes down to price points and speculation on which types of games they will start. With that in mind, I think Akanji and Stones are the most attractive assets. Out of those listed above they are the joint-2nd and 4th cheapest at 5.0 m and 5.4 m, respectively. Ake is 5.0 m and Walker is the cheapest at 4.8 m.

I don’t expect Ake to start as much as the others unless injury occurs, so he is out of the question for now. Out of the other three, I think Walker has the least attractive expected rotation. In my opinion, Walker will get used in games when the opposition have a high attacking threat and/or a challenging left winger – this is generally the best teams. In comparison, Akanji and Stones should start more games against worse opposition – when you would expect City to keep a clean sheet more often than not.

Picking between the two, I think Stones has a higher goal threat and is generally first-choice in defense, but Akanji seems to rotate in for the easier games. Especially when Champions League starts back up, I think Akanji gets the better end of rotation for FPL. So, at the moment, Stones slightly edges it, but once Champions League returns, Akanji slightly edges it.

Since this article was written, it has been revealed that Ruben Dias is injured for approximately one month. The only impact this has is that it makes Stones and Akanji slightly more appealing in the short term, but they are still not nailed. Arsenal and Newcastle’s defenses still offer nailed defenders for as cheap.

The case against City defense from FPL GW17

With all that being mentioned, we still have to decide who to own out of Cancelo, Akanji, and Stones. In my opinion, looking at the bigger picture, Arsenal and Newcastle offer just as good, if not better, assets for cheaper. Trippier will be in most teams, but I really think adding two more Arsenal and Newcastle defenders is a great move. These three teams are by far the best defenses, and City simply lack cheap, nailed assets like the other teams have.

Man City Attacking triple-up?

Man City Attacking triple-up worth in FPL from GW17?

So, if we opt for no City defense, what about tripling up on Haaland, KDB, and Foden? In my opinion, it comes down to how you judge KDB and Foden individually. Do you like them better than their alternatives? Are you holding Foden as a long-term pick? If so, then I see no problem with tripling up. The one worry would be the potential for 2/3 to get benched and sub on. However, I think that should happen very rarely, especially before the Champions League returns.

Pep fitness quote reaction

On Wednesday, Pep said: “The players at the World Cup are in better condition than the ones that were here. Sergio, Erling, Riyad, Cole, they are missing a little bit. They competed every day and we had holidays. That’s why it’s so important to maintain the rhythm.”

What I read from this is that we can approach business as normal. There may be some worried about how the World Cup players will return, but I think that is overthinking things. The only potential dilemma, across the board, is who will be ready for GW17. For GW18 and beyond, rotation should return to normal.

What About the Other Man City Assets?

You might be curious about an asset I failed to mention, so here’s a 1-2 sentence opinion about why each is not an FPL asset worth considering at the moment:

  • Riyad Mahrez – Not first-choice, and even when he is, he is a super frustrating asset.
  • Ilkay Gundogan – Good xMins, but less attacking threat than Bernardo (who is 0.4 m cheaper and a bit more nailed) generally.
  • Jack Grealish – His current role is not one that translates to a good FPL asset.
  • Julian Alvarez – Maybe Pep starts to play him more now, but there is no need to be the first one to jump on him. If he ever looks to be a regular starter, he will be an amazing asset.
  • Ruben Dias – Too expensive compared to Akanji/Stones and subs on too often.
  • Aymeric Laporte – Too expensive compared to Akanji/Stones.

Conclusion on Man City FPL Assets

All in all, I think anywhere from 1-3 Man City assets is viable on a GW17 Wildcard. Haaland is a no-brainer, then I would seriously consider KDB, Cancelo, Foden, Stones, Bernardo, and Akanji (in priority order). All other assets, I would ignore for the time being.
