One Underpriced FPL Asset from all of the ‘Big Six’

Manchester City- Kovačić – MID – £5.0m

The Croatian centre midfielder made the move from Chelsea to Manchester City this summer.

By no means is he a star signing like we’re used to seeing from Pep and City, but he may be going under the radar in the FPL community and here’s why:

  • Firstly, we saw Kevin De Bruyne leave the pitch after picking up an injury in the Champions League Final last month. We now know that he is likely to miss the start of the season because of this which leaves his attacking midfield role vacant. Of course, the more likely suitors for this are Foden or Álvarez but Kovačić has the attributes to deputise.
  • Secondly, Gundogan has left Man City to join Barcelona, which leaves a more permanent vacancy in the number 8 role that he took up last season. Again, there is a more likely suitor for this in Bernardo Silva. However, there’s no guarantee that he’ll still be at the Etihad come the start of the season, which brings me to reason 3.
  • There are rumours that Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva could be leaving City in the near future. Replacements would almost certainly be purchased if they were to move on but it would, nevertheless, make Kovačić a more likely starter.

Of course, there’s every chance that he has been purchased predominantly as a rotation option but if he finds himself starting regularly, Mateo Kovačić could make a mockery of his £5.0m price tag.

Arsenal- Gabriel – DEF – £5.0m

Arsenal put together one of their strongest seasons in years, leading the league for most of it, only to be pipped to the post by City towards the end. One common theme to Arteta’s success over the season was to play largely the same personnel in each game. Gabriel, along with Aaron Ramsdale, started all 38 of Arsenal’s Premier League fixtures so there are not many safer bets xMins-wise.

It’s no surprise that Arsenal posted the third-lowest xGC (Expected Goals Conceded) of all teams last season behind only City and Newcastle. The Brazilian also found himself at second of the xG (Expected Goals) charts amongst all defenders last year, amassing a total of 3.44 xG.

The defender with the one of the highest goal threat, almost guaranteed starts and that was part of a top three defence last season can be yours for just £5.0m.

Manchester United- Fernandes – MID – £8.5m

We all know how good Bruno Fernandes is by now. The attacking midfielder racked up 8 goals and 8 assists last season from his 37 starts.

Looking at the expected data again, Bruno created 18.05 xA (Expected Assists) for his teammates. This underperformance of 9.05 can largely be attributed to the lack of a clinical number nine at Manchester United. This is being worked on by Erik ten Hag and should they sign a new striker, Bruno could be on for a much higher tally than 9 assists this season.

Bruno Fernandes Stats last season

  • Expected Assists– 18.05(1st overall)
  • Big Chances Created– 32(1st overall)
  • Expected Goal Involvement– 28.1(2nd among midfielders)

Chelsea- Nkunku – FWD – £7.5m

Chelsea’s new signing arrives with some pedigree so let’s delve into the numbers.

Last season he amassed 16 goals and 4 assists in 25 matches, 20 of which he started. He managed 0.74 npxGI (Non-Penalty Expected Goal Involvement) per 90 which ranks him 20th amongst all players in the top 5 European leagues. This is off the back of 20 goals and 13 assists in 34 matches the season before.

If he can get anywhere close to replicating these numbers for Chelsea, he will prove a bargain at just £7.5m.

Spurs- Pedro Porro – DEF – £5.0m

Despite Spurs’ tough season, Pedro Porro was one of the more positive notes. Upon his arrival in January, he took charge of the right wing-back position, playing 15 matches, scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists.

As he joined midway through the season it’s unfair to judge him on full season data so npxGI per 90 is the most appropriate statistic to analyse. The Spaniard ranks second amongst all defenders in this metric behind only Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It’s yet to be seen how new manager Ange Postecoglou will arrange his Spurs side but if he can get similar numbers out of Pedro Porro, £5.0m could prove to be a bargain.

Liverpool- Darwin – FWD – £7.5m

Darwin Núñez boasts some of the most impressive statistics in Europe. For npxGI, he’s third behind only Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappé, meaning he trumps Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland in this metric. We’ve all seen him register an obscene amount of big chances, only for him to fail to convert them. However, for a player of his quality, a cold finishing streak can only go on for so long.

The trouble right now is that Gakpo, Jota and Diaz finished the season ahead of the Uruguayan in Klopp’s pecking order. If Darwin can find his way back into the starting eleven regularly, he could make his price tag of £7.5m look silly.
