Best £6.5m FPL Midfielders- Stats, Comparison ahead of GW1

The new Premier League season is finally upon us, so it’s time to finalize our FPL gameweek one teams!

One of the most competitive positions ahead of the 2023/24 season is the £6.5m midfielder slot. Should early favourites Mbeumo and Mitoma be locked into your team, or will the pre-season form of Eze be too tempting to overlook? As well as this, differential options March and new signing Diaby will also be considered.

Mbeumo has the most goal contributions of these options – him scoring fewer points than Eze is primarily due to him being classed as a forward last season. Eze and March both had 14 goal contributions (excluding FPL assists), with half of March’s coming from assists. Mbeumo did play the most minutes among these players, and still comes out on top for a lot of the data per 90 minutes. He does also benefit greatly from Toney being out, and will be Brentford’s penalty taker. There was a slight injury scare in pre-season, but him being substituted at 30 minutes seemed to be just a precaution. He did manage 1 goal in pre-season.

Mbeumo without Toney last season:

Mbeumo did perform really in the matches Toney missed last season(5 matches).

  • Matches- 5
  • Goals- 5
  • Assists- 2
  • xG/90- 0.76
  • xA/90- 0.27

Mitoma had a high FPL points total per 90 of 5.37, and his figures per 90 minutes are fairly positive. His expected figures are better however, having the highest expected goals per 90 along with Mbeumo. While March has not got a pre-season return, Mitoma does have two assists. Out of these options, Hub predicts Mitoma to score the most points from GW1-6 (29.9).

March did under-perform his xGI, but he did also get awarded 3 FPL assists, so eventually his numbers became more balanced. I think his numbers do warrant consideration over teammate Mitoma as a more differential option, with the highest xGI total per 90 minutes. Although the rumors have not been confirmed, Brighton have been linked with Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus. If this transfer does go through, this could negatively affect March’s playing time.

Eze had the highest points total and per 90 minutes, and the highest actual goals. He does have the lowest non-penalty xGI of the four assets, but him being first-choice penalty taker and on free-kicks will surely boost his potential. He has also had 5 assists and 2 goals in pre-season.

Eze under Roy Hodgson(Since GW29):

Eze has been really good ever since Roy Hodgson took over. He has been the Talisman since then with 6 goals, 2 assists from 10 games.

Rank among midfielders

  • Shots on Target- Joint 3rd
  • Goals- 3rd
  • FPL Points- 2nd

Moussa Diaby

[Stats taken from FBEF]

Diaby had a great season with Leverkusen. In 33 starts, he got 9 goals (xG=11.0) and 8 assists (xA=8.2). He averaged 1.13 shots on target per 90 and 1.93 key passes per 90. In pre-season, he has scored 2 goals.

Team Statistics

Brighton came out as the best team by far last season, not just by their actual table result, but also throughout their attacking numbers. Therefore, it is clear to see why Mitoma has been such a popular pick in the community, and also shows that March could be a great differential option if nothing threatens his starting spot.

Despite Eze’s great season, Crystal Palace are the worst-performing team in all but one of the statistics shown here. Therefore, it is clear that Eze is the stand-out goal threat from this team, but this could perhaps hinder his ability to keep on delivering points compared to the Brighton assets.

Brentford consistently come in as the second-best team here, and so I think Mbeumo and Wissa are definitely options you should be considering given their price tags.

Aston Villa’s attacking statistics are fairly average, though they did finish just 1 point behind Brighton in the end.

Fixtures from GW1- GW6

Hub rank Brighton’s opening six fixtures as the second-most favourable among all teams. With an opening two games against newly-promoted Luton Town at home and Wolves, targeting Brighton’s assets has been popular among the FPL community. They will eventually face tougher opponents in Newcastle and Man United, but this initial fixture run has the potential for great points.

Crystal Palace also have some favourable fixtures, including Sheffield United, Wolves, and Fulham. There are some tougher away fixtures, and a game at the Emirates.

According to Hub, Brentford have the 4th-best opening fixtures. After a tough first game against Spurs, they really hit a favourable run, and having their talisman for just £6.5m during these games looks to be an appealing option.

Aston Villa have the worst fixtures of these teams. They face Newcastle, Liverpool, and Chelsea – all away from home. The back-to-back games against Everton and Burnley is appealing, but it may not be possible to target these considering how precious transfers will be.

£6.5m FPL Midfielders Comparison – Verdict

Of these options, Eze is my personal favourite, and he will most likely be in my GW1 team. 7 returns in pre-season is enough for me to take notice and make space for him, and his set-piece threat only adds to that.

However, you cannot overlook the fact that Brighton were the best team last season and also have the nicest opening fixtures. As such, going without Mitoma is a huge risk. I think March is a tempting differential, as long as you keep an eye on the Kudus transfer rumours, but it’s one I personally won’t be going with. As of now, Mitoma is likely to remain in my team for GW1, and having two assets at that £6.5m price points means I can have flexibility if someone like Diaby hits the ground running.

I will warily be starting without Mbeumo in GW1. I think I would rather Eze and Mitoma, and I’m most likely going to target Brentford’s nice fixtures with Wissa up front. However, with Mbeumo now being the first-choice penalty taker, I know it’s a risk going without him.

Diaby, as well as being a risk given that he’s a new signing, also has the worst fixtures of all the teams I have discussed. I think, for these reasons, he is an avoid for me in GW1. He is still an exciting asset, and one that I will be looking to bring in once Villa’s fixtures switch.
