With this being my third ALLABOUTFPL article, it would be nice to introduce myself to you all. My name is Soumyadut, though people find it easier to call me Soum. Some may know me as @FPL_Soum on Twitter. I have been playing Fantasy Premier League for around 10 years, but with seriousness since last 4 years. I have managed 2 X Top 1% Finishes in last 3 seasons, and gunning for the same this year too. I have been a Man Utd and Brazil fan for as long as I can remember.

Newcastle United 2022/23 Season Overview
Newcastle carries a rich legacy with its name. The famous white and black stripes have been adorned by many legends like Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, Paul Gascoigne, James Milner, Fabricio Coloccini, Michael Owen and Kevin Keegan. Under the tutelage of the latter and Sir Bobby Robson, the club threatened to be a part of Big 4 once during the mid-90s and again during the early 2000s. But then came the dark days when they got relegated in 09/10 and again in 15/16. But what was remarkable was the way they bounced straight back winning the Championship the very next season. A series of mid-table performances continued and then the miracle happened.
On 7 October 2021, after 14 years as owner, Mike Ashley sold the club to a Saudi consortium for a reported £305 million, making them the richest football club in the world. The new owners brought in Eddie Howe as the new manager, Dan Ashworth as the new Sporting Director and Darren Eales as the club’s new CEO. Contrary to the fans’ expectations, the new owners did not start splashing cash all over. On hindsight that was a shrewd move as they went for prudent buys like Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett, Sven Botman, Nick Pope and Alexander Isak. These names do not ooze super stardom but probably that was necessary for a manager like Howe who is still learning the tricks of trade and having to manage super egos might have been an unnecessary headache for him.
Newcastle 2022/23 Best Starting XI
Newcastle currently sit 3rd in the EPL table while being ranked joint 1st in terms of goals conceded (fewest) and clean sheets along with Arsenal. Newcastle’s only defeat has come at Anfield in GW5, implying the Magpies are undefeated at St. James’ Park this season. Newcastle have picked up an astonishing 22 points out of a possible 24 since October, only dropping points in a goalless stalemate at Old Trafford. Talisman Allan Saint-Maximin played only 33 mins in those 8 matches while big-money summer signing Alexander Isak missed out entirely. This speaks of the depth of the squad as Miguel Almirón stepped up with 7 goals and Callum Wilson chipped in with 4 goals as well.
Latest Newcastle United Updates:
- Newcastle reached the quarterfinals of the Carabao cup after a 1-0 win over Bournemouth. Newcastle registered an xG of 1.7 xG vs BOU. Miguel Almiron missed a big chance for Newcastle.
- ASM came in at the 57th minute replacing Willock.
- Eddie Howe on Isak before the Carabao cup game: “Not much has changed with Alex, we’re still in the same situation. We’re assessing him day by day and want to make sure when he returns he’s in the best possible condition.
- Earlier in the break, Newcastle won 5-0 against Al Hilal and 2-1 against Rayo Vallecano.
Newcastle United Upcoming Fixtures from GW17
Newcastle has an extremely appealing fixture list right until mid-February. Except Arsenal, they do not face any team from the current Top 8. In fact, 3 of the 4 teams they face next (except Arsenal), are all in the Bottom 6 in terms of goals conceded.
In terms of home & away, Newcastle’s next fixtures alternate every week.
Deep diving into their form by Home & Away, we see Howe’s boys (should we call them Howelings?) have been conservative in away matches scoring 1.71 goals per match, whereas at home they have scored 2.13 goals per match. So, keep this in mind while choosing Wilson or Almirón against Leicester (6 CS in the last 8 matches) and Arsenal (joint-best defence in the league, along with Newcastle)
However, there is not much of a difference in terms of defensive numbers.
Before going further do vote in FPL GW17 Captaincy Poll below. The metrics has a 12/15 successful returns record this season. Do vote in the captaincy poll for this week below. The captaincy metrics blog from @AK_FPL1 will be posted soon based on the votes.
Best Newcastle United FPL Assets by Position from GW17
Goalkeepers:
Nick Pope – £5.3 m
Goalkeeper with the highest FPL points, clean sheets, mins played, fewest goals conceded – you name it and Pope has it. He has settled in quickly in his new team and has already seen the highest price increase and most transfer ins amongst Goalkeepers. Since Newcastle has been equally frugal in both home and away matches, Pope can be your set & forget GK for the season.
Newcastle United FPL Defenders to Target from FPL GW17:
Kieran Trippier – £5.9 m
I have covered Trippier in detail in my article on defenders. But to give you a 1 line summary – Trippier is an absolute MUST-HAVE in your FPL team. Trippier has seen a price rise of £0.9 m – the highest in FPL this season and for obvious reasons. He is the 3rd highest-scoring FPL asset behind Haaland and Kane. Amongst defenders, he is ranked 1st for FPL points, bonus, BPS, assists, clean sheets, big chances created, chances created, successful corners, crosses, and successful crosses. This season, he has blanked only twice (against Liverpool and Spurs).

Fabian Schär – £4.9 m
Schär has started every match for Newcastle except the one in which their only loss came. So he is a guaranteed starter in the water-tight Newcastle defence. But he is not just a bench fodder for guaranteed mins in a strong defence. Amongst defenders, he is ranked 5th for FPL points and 6th for value. Switzerland made an early exit from the FIFA World Cup in the R16, so Schär will have almost 3 weeks of rest before he travels to the King Power Stadium on Boxing Day.

Newcastle United FPL Midfielders to Target from FPL GW17:
Miguel Almirón – £5.8 m
What is Jack Grealish’s favourite sweet dish? Humble Pie
The baby-faced Paraguayan has pulled off incredible numbers in the last 8 GWs scoring 71 points and blanking only once against Manchester United. He is the highest-scoring midfielder currently ahead of giants like De Bruyne and Salah. He is 2nd in terms of value this season (behind teammate Trippier). The only thing which might put FPL managers in doubt is Almirón’s underlying numbers. He has an XG of only 4.57. In fact, Almirón does not feature in the Top 10 for conventional attacking metrics like XGI, XG, Shots Inside Box, Shots on Target, Big Chances, and Penalty Area Touches.
But as the saying goes – “make hay while the sun shines”. Two years ago, we have seen a certain Lingard defying underlying stats and plundering FPL returns consistently while purists were made to rue their cautious approach of relying too much on statistics.

Joe Willock – £4.9 m
While Bruno Guimarães continues to be a more popular Newcastle assets (both in terms of FPL team selected by and international exposure), it is Willock who has turned out to be a cheeky differential. Owned by only 0.6% managers, Willock is in a rich vein of form having scored 20 FPL points including 4 bonus points in his last two matches.
The lad surely knows how to continue a scoring streak having scored in 7 consecutive games last year. So I won’t bet against him continuing his scoring streak once the season resumes. However, there are options aplenty to choose from in that price bracket. And with Trippier already occupying a Newcastle slot in your FPL team, be aware of the risks if you are betting on this differential potential hidden gem.

Newcastle United FPL Forwards to Target from FPL GW17:
Callum Wilson – £7.4 m
As was the case for the last 4 years, Wilson started this season as well with a bang. 2 goals in the first 3 matches including one against Man City, and the Newcastle striker were flying. Then came the injury. He returned just in time in GW 9 to cover up for the injured Isaak and immediately returned 11 points in the next 2 games. Two tough games against Man Utd and Everton came without any return.
Then there was a goal against the mighty Spurs and then came the monstrous haul of 19 points against Aston Villa at home. It was followed by two more blanks in the last two games. On his day Wilson can make a mockery of any defence. Rejuvenated after a long World Cup break, Wilson might just be the man to catapult you in your mini-leagues, especially with Isak ruled out for the near term.

Alexander Isak – £6.6m
Newcastle managed to land Isak in a club-record deal worth £60 million. Isak’s work permit came through in time for him to play against Liverpool at Anfield in GW5. And he got off to a great start, putting Newcastle 1-0 up with an emphatic strike in the 38th minute. Isak also found the net in the second half, this time with a composed finish. But the goal was ruled out for an incredibly close offside. He scored once again in GW8 against Bournemouth to record 3 bonus points and a total of 9 FPL points.
But he has not featured for Eddie Howe’s squad since then owing to an injury. Howe recently said that the 23-year-old might not return in time for the season restart. But once Isak does start playing he surely knows how to score. Amongst forwards, he is still 3rd in terms of points per match. If he returns after the Arsenal match, he can wreak havoc against the likes of Fulham, Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Bournemouth.

Other Notable Newcastle United Options from FPL GW17
Defender – Sven Botman – £4.4m
No defender priced at £4.5m or less, has scored more FPL points than Botman. He is the cheapest route into the fantastic Newcastle defence.

Midfielder – Allan Saint-Maximin – £6.2m
An electric powerhouse when fit, Saint-Maximin can make the smartest defenders look amateurish on his day as was evident by his 3 assists against Man City in GW3. He followed it up with another 9 points in GW 4 and then got injured. Saint-Maximin hasn’t started a Premier League game since August.
But when he does start, he makes his presence felt. His last 16 PL starts produced ten wins, three draws and only two defeats, NUFC averaging more than two points per game over those sixteen PL matches. Now Allan Saint-Maximin is itching to get back into action, with Bournemouth in the League Cup ahead of Leicester away in the Premier League in nine days’ time.
