FPL GW24 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) Is it okay to play the Wildcard ahead of FPL GW24?

Is it okay to play the Wildcard ahead of FPL GW24?

Managers not planning to play their Free Hit in GW29 were using their Wildcard chip between GW30-33. The idea here was to prepare for the doubles in GW34 and 37 while dead-ending the team in GW29, preparing for the blank week. But, after the announcement of a Double GW in GW25 and GW28, this strategy has changed slightly.

Now, many managers, especially those with a bunch of players from Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Luton, are thinking of restructuring their teams. They are targeting players from Man City and Brentford while keeping their Luton players for their double in GW25 & 28 and letting go of Spurs and Chelsea picks as they blank in GW26.

A wildcard allows you to do that without taking hits and going through the hassle of buying and selling multiple players from different teams. You can play the “Bench Boost” in GW25, but the “Triple Captain” chip on Haaland will be more popular that week, and there is a lot to lose here.

Wildcarding in GW24 is still a bit team-dependent. You can use your “Free Transfers” and get 5-6 Double Gameweek players for GW25 and around 10 playing picks for the Blank GW26. If this is possible, there is merit in saving the Wildcard to take advantage of the doubles later in the season.

But in case your team is in a mess. You would have to take multiple hits to sort out the problems, or if you want to go against the crowd, Wildcarding in FPL GW24 can be a great alternative strategy.

2) How do you plan for the upcoming Doubles and Blank Gameweek?

The current confirmed Double and Blank Gameweek fixtures are as follows:

Double Gameweek 25
✅ MCI vs CHE (H), BRE (H)
✅ BRE vs LIV (H), MCI (A)
✅ LIV vs BRE (A), LUT (H)
✅ LUT vs MUN (H), LIV (A)

Blank Gameweek 26
❌ CHE vs TOT
❌ LIV vs LUT

Double Gameweek 28

✅ BOU vs SHU (H), LUT (H)
✅ LUT vs CRY (A), BOU (A)

Fixtures going ahead in GW29
✅ FUL vs TOT
✅ BUR vs BRE
✅ WHU vs AVL

As I mentioned in the earlier section, one strategy is to use the Wildcard in GW24 and prepare for the double in GW25 and 28, along with Blanks in GW26 and 29. The other common strategy would be to use ‘Free Transfers’ and get to your preferred playing XI. You can plan your Man City moves depending on how many Man City players you have. They have a double in GW25 and don’t blank in GW26.

Next on the priority list is Liverpool, and I aim to get to 2 Liverpool players for their Double in GW25. The blank in GW26, and unless you are planning to Free Hit in GW26, you can keep it to 2 Liverpool players.

Then come your picks from Luton, a decent-form team with Doubles in GW25 and 28 but is blanking in GW26. And don’t go super heavy with Luton picks unless you are Free Hitting in GW26.

Brentford is another team that is worth looking at for now. They double in GW25 and don’t blank in GW26 and 29. The double in GW25 is against Liverpool and Man City, so the potential is slightly less, but it may still be worth it.

Then, coming to our final team, Bournemouth, who doubles in GW28, someone like Solanke will be a popular pick and captaincy option. One option is selling Solanke for Darwin and getting him back for the Double in GW28.

Ollie Watkins has no doubles coming up, but he can be held as he has a confirmed fixture in GW29.
Other picks like Richarlison and Palmer can be sold as they do blank in GW26. Players like Jota, Foden, or even more expensive picks like KDB and Salah (if confirmed fit) can be brought in before the Double in GW25.

3) Which Double Gameweek teams/players should be targeted this week?

Which Double Gameweek teams/players should be targeted this week?

My priority would be to get in Man City players first. They have a double in GW25 and don’t blank in GW26. Man City is a team in form and playing well. A triple-up on Man City is the best way to get the most out of their strong expected performance. Erling Haaland and Phil Foden are must-haves at the moment. I also like KDB more than Ederson/Walker, as there is more potential for points. I recommend a triple City attack unless your team structure doesn’t allow it.

Julián Álvarez is a don’t buy/don’t sell for me. He will likely get a start in GW24, but I am not confident in predicting a start for him every week. He can lose his place in the team, and that’s why he becomes a slightly risky pick.

Next is Liverpool, and Jota and Darwin look like the picks to have in attack. There is no sure-shot confirmation of a Salah start at the time of writing this article. He could still be a great differential pick, as many managers may find it very hard to bring back Salah. (because of funds spread across the team). It might be a great move if you already have him or can get him easily, especially if Salah starts both games.

Trent Alexander Arnold is another great pick to have, and even though he is coming back from injury, I expect him to play the majority of the upcoming games. While he is one of the best defenders going forward, I am not expecting Liverpool to keep clean sheets. I can’t afford him, and despite Liverpool’s clean sheet woes, he is one player I am scared of not owning right now.

Coming to other Double Gameweek teams, Brentford and Luton are also doubling in GW25. Both have a tricky double in GW25, facing Liverpool and Man City that week. You can still have Ivan Toney from the Brentford attack. He is a nailed attacker who will be Brentford’s talisman and can score against even tougher opposition.

If you want to make upgrades across the pitch, having a Luton defender may not be the worst decision this season. Luton also doubles in GW28, but do make a note of their blank in GW26. Alfie Doughty is the pick in defence, but he is £4.6m right now. You can go Amari’i Bell or even Teden Mengi (both £3.9m as cheap enablers)

4) What to do with Salah and Son?

What to do with Salah and Son?

Mohamed Salah and Son Heung-min missed recent Premier League action because of their commitment to the AFCON/Asia Cup. Both are now with their respective teams and can become a factor in our decision-making for the upcoming transfers.

Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah ahead of GW24: “We hope he can be part of parts of training next week, so we have to see, he’s going through all paces. It’s positive, it’s either next week or the week after – if you ask him it’s next week.”

Talking about Salah first, he got injured just before halftime in a group stage game against Ghana in AFCON. Based on the latest update it looks like Salah will play one of the two DGW25 games, which makes it tricky to hold him(if you still have him) or plan to get him for DGW25.

I don’t expect him to start both games, but stranger things have happened in the FPL world. It’s surely a wait-and-watch for me.

Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou:

“[Heung-Min Son] got back on Wednesday [from the Asian Cup]. He did recovery on Thursday but trained with the team today. “[Available for this weekend] Yeah, definitely Sonny and Biss. They trained well.

Son Heung-min is an interesting one! I expect him to start getting minutes in the team very soon. Spurs have great attacking fixtures, but there is a blank gameweek for them in GW26. Also, many managers like me have Richarlison, and he is ticking along very nicely. For now, Son doesn’t trouble my thinking, but I will closely monitor his progress.

5) Is it time to sell Arsenal players?

Is it time to sell Arsenal players ahead of FPL GW24

The Arsenal defence and Bukayo Saka, in particular, have been excellent from an FPL point of view. We have now come to a stage where we must take a few tricky calls. Arsenal players can easily tick along, but the team doesn’t have a double in GW25, or 28 and is likely to blank in GW29.

This makes the case for selling players like Bukayo Saka, Gabriel, etc and getting picks from Man City/Liverpool instead. Yes, there can be massive points swings if the Arsenal players outperform the Double Gameweek picks, but it’s a risk worth taking.

And it’s for this reason that downgrading any Arsenal defender to afford one of the Man City/Liverpool attackers is absolutely. As mentioned earlier, a Luton player can be bought, but don’t expect them to start keeping clean sheets all of a sudden, and they also blank in GW26.

I’d sell Martin Ødegaard and Gabriel Martinelli in midfield, as better alternatives are available.

Bukayo Saka is a slightly tricky one! He has scored 3 times in his last 4 games and has shown some decent form. Plus, he is owned by almost 60% of managers and can be a rank killer if you don’t own him. It depends on your play style. I am a manager who takes risks and plays aggressively. If you are the same, selling Saka is a fine move. If you want to play safe, keep him and find an alternative route to get an additional double gameweek player.

6) Who are the best forwards to have in our teams right now?

Who are the best forwards to have in our teams right now?

This is a dilemma a lot of FPL managers are facing right now. Many of us are playing with 3 strikers, and it’s gotten even more challenging to select the correct 3.

Erling Haaland is a must-have right now. I expect him to start every game for Man City, and it’s not worth going without him. There is much more to lose, and it’s better not to overcomplicate.

Then we have the remaining two spots and a bunch of strikers to choose from. The popular trio is Ollie Watkins, Dominic Solanke and Julián Álvarez. We also have Darwin Nunez and differentials like Ivan Toney, Matheus Cunha, Joao Pedro and Elijah Adebayo as options.

Alvarez and Nunez have doubles in GW25, and Solanke has a double in GW28. Adebayo has a double in GW25+28, but he doesn’t cut it for me. I understand the value he can provide at the said price point (£4.9m) but there are better picks out there.

For me, there are better City attackers to target, and Alvarez is not a priority. One of Solanke/Watkins can be sold if you are okay with the risk, and Nunez can be brought in for the double in GW25. If you don’t want to sell Watkins, selling Solanke is an option for Nunez. Then, reverse the move for Solanke’s double in GW28.

Suppose you are looking for a differential pick. In that case, Ivan Toney is a great shout for me and is ahead of players like Cunha, Pedro and Adebayo. He doubles in GW25 and doesn’t blank in GW26 & 29.

That will be all from my side for this week! I wish you all the best for FPL Gameweek 24, and I will see you all next week.
