FPL Rules & Basics

If you’re new to FPL, here is a link to all our FPL Beginners Guide including FPL Beginner’s Guide- How to play?, Bench boost, Team value, Triple captain, Effective ownership, Price Changes, Free Hit, Bonus Points, and more.

What is Free Hit?

The Free Hit chip allows you to make unlimited transfers for a single Gameweek. You can build a team of your choice on a Free Hit. However, at the next week’s deadline, your team returns to how it was at the start of the Gameweek, before using the chip.

Basic Rules of the Free Hit chip

Managers can use the Free Hit chip only once during the course of a season.

The Free Hit when played nullifies all the points hits taken in that week. At the same time, it also makes those transfers a part of the free hit. Therefore, you will lose those transfers prior to the next week’s deadline. So, in case you regret the number of hits you have taken in a week, you can Free Hit your way out of that.

The team value is not affected by the changes in the price of your free hit team. You can move early and get in players before their price rises. However, that increase won’t lead to a higher team value. However, your old team will lose/gain value based on price changes happening during the period in which you played your Free Hit.

When is the best time to use the FPL Free Hit?

The best time to play Free Hit, just like any other chip is when the season throws a series of doubles and blanks at you.

Free hit in a double gameweek & Blank gameweek

In a double gameweek, using this chip and getting as many players for the double as you can should be the strategy. In the case of a Blank Gameweek, many popular teams usually do not have a fixture. Therefore, free hit can help remove those players and get players from teams who do have a fixture. This can ultimately lead to gaining ranks against your rivals, who do not have a free hit in that week.

Free Hit also gives a great opportunity to managers to get in a few differentials in their teams. Usually getting in differentials for a free transfer means keeping them for a period of four to five weeks. Also, making sure they have a good enough run of fixtures and whatnot. On a free hit, however, managers can go for players who have the best fixture in that particular week. They don’t have to take their fixture run, rotation risk, and other associated factors into consideration.

Good time to play Free Hit in the Last gameweek of the season(GW38)?

GW38 has always seen a lot of goals and it is a good strategy to play free hit in the last gameweek as well.

fpl gw38 GOALS galore
In GW38 last season, some of the big teams faced relegation candidates.
This strategy could be applied for any good single gameweek as well when the fixtures are good.

In the last gameweek of the 2021/22 season, we saw 39 goals, a whopping 3.9 goals per game, much higher than the season average. The trend is the same for GW38 in the previous seasons too.

The trend continued in the 2022/23 FPL Season:

  • Total goals in GW38: 33 goals
  • Goals per game in GW38: 3.3
  • Goals per match(season average): 2.85

FPL Free Hit in Any Single Gameweek

During the season there will be some good single gameweeks in which the big teams play some easy fixtures that can be targetted for a free hit.
