Who Are The Best Chelsea Assets To Consider For FPL DGW34?

@fpl_flair is back with a piece on Chelsea assets ahead of FPL DGW34, currently ranked 326 in the world after an incredible GW33. Do drop him a follow if you haven’t already!

After an exhilarating DGW33, we’re thrown straight into another DGW with Chelsea and United doubling as FPL managers search for the best assets in Thomas Tuchel’s minefield. I’ll be discussing the best Chelsea assets for DGW34 and beyond, taking both a short and long-term view. First, let’s look at the fixtures.

Chelsea Fixtures From FPL DGW34 to GW38

Chelsea Fixtures From FPL GW34 to GW38

Overall, Chelsea’s fixtures look fantastic, with them up against three relegation contenders, the goal-shy Wolves and porous Leicester, plus the DGW of West Ham and United – neither of whom have particularly impressed recently. It is important to note Chelsea have the FA Cup final on May 14, 3 days after the Leeds game – making that match look prime for rotation. Now, let’s take a look at who we can get from Tuchel’s team.

Antonio Rudiger (6.2M)

Rudiger Chelsea FPL DGW34

Rudiger is unquestionably the most nailed of the Chelsea defender, starting all but two PL games yesterday. His forays forward, excellent set-piece ability – as shown with a goal vs Real Madrid, and leadership make him an important part of Tuchel’s side. Unfortunately, he picked up an injury in the FA Cup semi-final and doesn’t seem to have trained all week, with Tuchel considering him unlikely to play West Ham. Because of this, I would avoid buying Rudiger, however, owners have a more interesting decision on their hands. Personally, with his general nailedness I would consider him one of the most likely players to play both games in DGW36 – because of this, I’d avoid selling him, especially for a hit. However, it is worth remembering that in Chelsea’s last DGW, Rudiger was benched vs Norwich after a lengthy run of games – so while he’s less risky than the other options long-term, that risk is still there.

Reece James (6.3M) / Marcos Alonso (5.5M)

James vs Alonso Chelsea FPL DGW34

James has been a force of nature for me this season, while Marcos Alonso the opposite – so it’s interesting to think that the latter could be the better pick for the rest of the season. Both are phenomenal FPL assets as wingbacks in Chelsea’s 3-4-3, able to make runs in the box and deliver crosses aplomb. However, James has been played at RCB recently, which presents both a concern and a boost for those looking to own.

Tuchel has mentioned that he’s looking to conserve James’ fitness, especially with the injury he suffered, and this has resulted in him taking time away from the position FPL managers would prefer. This isn’t an anywhere near permanent change, however, it can definitely continue. With 3 games played in the last 8 days, one going to ET, I’m concerned about a benching for Reece in the DGW – a familiar theme with Tuchel’s assets.

Alonso has played a similar amount of minutes, plus a start vs Southampton, so he could also be at risk – though the players who can play his role are less than Reece, who can drop out for Azpi. It’s risk and reward with the Chelsea fullbacks, but as it stands I’m not feeling particularly optimistic about either in terms of minutes. If I had to choose one though, it’d be Alonso – more likely to play wingback and less threat to his position.

Mason Mount (7.7M)

Mount Chelsea FPL DGW34

Mount is a player who I’m really excited to own for the DGW, having picked him up last week for his assist against Arsenal. Chelsea’s starboy has had a superb season, with 10 goals and 9 assists in 27 appearances (22 starts) in the PL. For the form lovers among you, Mason is enjoying plenty of that too – with 3 goals and 3 assists in his last 5 PL games, and a goal and assist vs Madrid in the CL QF. He’s crucial to Tuchel’s system and is Chelsea’s most nailed attacker in general, with his quality shown by a much-improved npxG+xA/90 of 0.56 this season.

However, there is a concern, as always with Tuchel, with rotation. Mount is generally a fitness machine and plays consistently, having started 5 games in 14 days. This does mean that he is less nailed than we would want this week. However, he is still a superb option for now until the rest of the season and should bring in plenty of points! For captaincy, we may want to look at his German counterpart…

Kai Havertz (7.9M)

Havertz Chelsea FPL DGW34

Tuchel’s finally reinstalled Havertz as his center forward, and it has paid dividends – Chelsea look a much better team with him up top, with his incredible off-the-ball movement, silky touching, and quality finishing all much needed and appreciated qualities. His underlying stats at striker are astoundingly good, and he’s showing it on the pitch too with 10 goals and 3 assists in 22 games when played up top this season. A benching vs Arsenal for rest’s sake bodes well for his starting chances in the DGW, especially after Lukaku’s invisible performance. However, I am confident he’s one of the most likely players to get rested in DGW36 vs Leeds, so keep that in mind when bringing him in. Nevertheless, Kai would, for me, be the best option for captaincy this week alongside Salah.

Timo Werner (8.9M)

Timo Werner Chelsea FPL DGW34

Turbo Timo has burst into form in recent weeks, grabbing 3 goals and 2 assists in his last 3 games. His underlying stats have always been impressive, so there’s no wonder that managers are looking to take out their misfiring strikers and chance the double. While I do like him as a pick if you have funds and spare and want to get rid of say, a Lacazette or a Broja, he is unquestionably the least nailed of Chelsea’s best front three – Pulisic, Lukaku, and Ziyech could easily come in in either or both of the DGWs and drop Timo to the bench. Because of this, I wouldn’t go out of my way to get him or captain him, and at his price there are better value and more nailed strikers out there – so I’d say he’s one for if you have a more unique team situation.

Overall, despite the appeal of the DGW, I’m not feeling Chelsea. Rotation is a major concern with the minutes leading up to DGW34 and the presence of a cup final in DGW36, and more nailed players could prove to be better estimated. However, Chelsea are a top team, and chancing two games for them could work out beautifully. Overall, my top three assets would be:

  1. Havertz
  2. Mount
  3. Alonso

That’s it for today’s article, hope you enjoyed it! As for me, I’ve got a lot to consider after an unexpectedly lovely green arrow into the top 350 in DGW33. Currently, I’m looking to add zero to one Chelsea to my current team (that owns Mount), with Doherty -> Laporte on my mind. Shoot me any questions on my Twitter, @fpl_flair!
