FPL GW34 Transfer Trends And Best Transfer Combinations

Welcome to FPL GW34 Transfer Trends! This is a weekly series where we take a bit of time to analyze some of the major transfer trends on FPL prior to the deadline.

This past Gameweek was one of ups and downs, depending on when your captain may have played. Those that took a gamble on Ronaldo saw it pay off, while betting on Fernandes fared badly. Those who opted to hold Salah against United saw him reap massive rewards in a rare instance of him being a differential. Many returns from other players all around either made or broke FPL ranks all around.

This week, we can see the transfer trends show people buying players from Chelsea, Norwich, and Liverpool. The top 5 transfers OUT come from Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester, and Tottenham.

Leading the top transfers out prior to this deadline is Saka (121k), despite claiming a 10 point haul in DGW33. He is followed closely by Chelsea defender Rüdiger, whose injury has prompted 113k managers to look for other defensive replacements.

Despite their doubles coming up, Maddison sees 96k transfers out, and Kane also sees 96k transfers out after his blank against Brighton. Finally, Lacazette’s doubt has initiated 92k replacements ahead of the deadline.

On the flip side, there is a Chelsea-dominant majority in the top transfers in, which is no surprise given their doubles in GW34 and 36. Chelsea’s hottest prospect is Mason Mount, who sees 263k managers already bring him into their teams.

He is followed by Norwich forward Pukki, who impressed 138k managers with his recent run of form. The two Chelsea players of Werner (110k) and James (93k) come after him, as managers prepare to target the doubles. Finally, Salah’s massive haul against United in GW33 sees 78k managers bring him in ahead of the Merseyside Derby.

The 3 transfer combinations we will be focusing on are: Rüdiger to James, Lacazette to Pukki, and Barnes to Mount.

FPL GW34 Transfer Combination 1:

Antonio Rüdiger (£6.2) to Reece James (£6.3)

Chelsea’s fixtures from GW34-38

With Rüdiger’s long-term injury and the advent of Chelsea’s double in GW34, 22% of managers have already swapped to fellow Chelsea teammate Reece James.

Despite his injury, James has begun his return to playing with the Chelsea in the last few games. As we’ve seen in previous occasions, James is very explosive and capable of hauling in FPL. He has registered 5 hauls that exceed 10 points this season. The defender has scored 5 goals, 6 assists, and 6 clean sheets in games that he has played in.

AbuBakar Siddiq on Twitter (@BigManBakar) writes about the choosing process between James and Alonso, two defenders in contention as options to replace Rüdiger.

The key points that Bakar discusses include:

  • James is Chelsea’s best outlet of attack
  • Despite playing as a right center-back in a few games prior, this should imply he will be more nailed and less prone to rotation
  • His xGi per 90 mins this season is only behind Alexander-Arnold, showing how explosive he can be
  • Favourable fixtures

Who do Chelsea face in GW34?

Chelsea play West Ham at home and Man United away in GW34. According to Drafthound, Chelsea have a relatively high 71% odds of keeping a clean sheet in one of their two fixtures in GW34. West Ham have yet to keep a clean sheet away from home this calendar year, averaging an xGC of roughly 2.

United have been a team that have shown glimpses of form but also really struggled trying to play under Rangnick. In the last 6 gameweeks alone, United have not kept a single clean sheet across both home and away games, conceding a whopping 14 goals in the period. Drafthound predicts their odds of keeping clean sheets against Chelsea to be 18%.

Both of these fixtures are key games that Chelsea assets, both defensive and attacking options, can exploit for points and returns.

Man United have conceded 14 goals in the last 6 gameweeks, keeping no clean sheets.

FPL GW34 Transfer Combination 2:

Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3) to Teemu Pukki (£6.0)

Norwich’s fixtures from GW34-38

Lacazette’s doubt leaves Arsenal with very few striker options. Many managers, almost 14.2%, have opted for Norwich striker Teemu Pukki.

While Norwich players aren’t screaming as prominent options at this current point in time, those looking for a striker to free up budget can look to Pukki at £6.0m. With 5 returns in the last 6 Premier League games, he has shown consistency in returns. During that time, he has scored 4 goals and 1 assist.

Statistically in the last 6 gameweeks, he has the 3rd best non-penalty xG among all forwards in the league, the 2nd best total shots (20), and the 2nd best shots on target (9).

Something to consider too is Norwich have a decent double in GW36, so Pukki at his price point could be a hold for the rest of the season as a budget enabler.

Who do Norwich face in GW34?

Norwich play Newcastle at home in GW34. Drafthound predicts that odds of Newcastle keeping a clean sheet will be around 31%. This season alone, Newcastle have only kept two clean sheets, conceding 29 goals in that time. They’ve conceded the 3rd most big chances among all teams (44).

Their xGC away from home (1.74) is higher than their xGC at home (1.52).

Pukki will be instrumental to the Norwich attack as they look to try and claw back whatever they can in the remainder of the season.

Newcastle have only kept 2 clean sheets across all of their away games this season.

FPL GW34 Transfer Combination 3:

Harvey Barnes (£6.6) to Mason Mount (£7.7)

FPL GW34 Transfer Trends ~ Harvey Barnes (£6.6) to Mason Mount (£7.7)
Chelsea’s fixtures from GW34-38

Despite his performance in DGW33, Barnes is being shipped out by close to 8.3% of managers ahead of the deadline for a very hot prospect this week: Chelsea’s Mason Mount.

With the doubles and fixture run that Chelsea have in the upcoming gameweeks, Chelsea attackers are great picks for the remainder of the season. Mount is arguably one of the standout picks from the Chelsea attack, given his security of starts and consistency. He has flourished in a central position under Tuchel’s new 3-4-1-2 formation.

Among all Chelsea attackers this season, he is top for total shots (55), shots on target (26), goals scored (10), xGI (0.5), big chances created (9), assists (10), touches in the box (104), and entries into the box (171).

Havertz comes close as a decent second Chelsea attacking option. The selection will be close between the two. However, according to Sophie Wellington’s comparison between Havertz and Mount, Mount would just about edge it over Havertz. His consistency of returns throughout the season, security of starts, performance under the new formation, and set-piece duty boosts his appeal over Havertz.
