Leicester City FPL Preview | Fixture Analysis | Key FPL Players

With the deadline not even two weeks, far managers are tinkering a lot to find that perfect squad. Leicester were very unfortunate to miss out on a top4 finish last season after losing out on that UCL on the last day. They are a well-run team and are fairly consistent finishing 5th in the last two seasons. Surely they would love to break into the top4 this season and they have the players to do that. In this article we will take a detailed look at the Leicester team with their fixtures, FPL players to target and avoid, under-the-radar picks, and expected lineups.

Leicester City team stats xG/90 and xA/90 from 2020/21 season

Leicester City 2021/22 Fixtures:

Leicester have a decent start, to be honest. Some easy ones along with Manchester City in the first five. But with a long-term view, I feel they have the fixtures to make a good start to this season. Wolves and Palace under a new manager, 2 promoted teams along with Brighton and Burnley in the first 10 are not bad at all in my opinion.

They won 6 out of the first 8 matches last season and 6 out of 10 in the season before that. With these decent fixtures to start off with Leicester could be a team to target for sure.

Burnley, Brighton, Wolves, and Palace were in the bottom 7 teams for goals scored last season which indicates potential clean sheets.

Best FPL Players from Leicester City to Target:

Kelechi Iheanacho – £7m – Fwd

Leicester city forwards to target for 2021/22 FPL season ~ Kelechi Iheanacho

Iheanacho was on fire during the second half of the season. He finished with a tally of 12 goals and 2 assists which were all scored from gw22 onwards. Among all Leicester players, Iheanacho was on top for shots/90, second for shots in the box/90, and third for key passes/90. It’s still not sure how Leicester would set up formation-wise playing a 2 man St system or not but despite that he should keep his place after a fine end to the season.

He had 17 big chances all season and managed to get 38 shots in the box. With an xGI of 36% and a non-penalty xG of 0.57/90 which ranked 2nd only behind Vardy, he should be a great option just costing 7.5m.

Harvey Barnes£7m – Mid

Leicester city midfielders to target for 2021/22 FPL season ~ Harvey Barnes

Barnes is one of the most direct players on the Leicester side and offers a huge goal threat. He was on course for his best season but got injured, unfortunately. He’s back in training now and scored in a pre-season game recently. Last season he had 1.85 shots in the box/90 which was only behind Vardy and Iheanacho for Leicester.

Barnes recorded 9 big chances and averaged 5.27 points per start. Between gameweeks 15-26 he scored 6 goals and provided 4 assists and was averaging 6.33 points per start. With Leicester changing to a 2 man striker system after he got injured it is still to be seen how they set up for this campaign. That being said Barnes is one of the main attacking players and should find a place in the squad regardless of the setup.

Jamie Vardy£10.5m – Fwd

Leicester city forwards to target for 2021/22 FPL season ~ Jamie Vardy

Yes, Vardy is old!! Yes, he is injury-prone!! But once again he was the top scorer for Leicester. Despite all those concerns he finished last season with 15 goals and 14 assists. He had a good start to the season but tailed off during the end only managing to score 4 goals in the last 21 games. Despite that, he scored 187 points and has been very consistent over the past few seasons scoring 210, 174, 183 points before that.

I expect him to be a good option to start the season with but with the new addition of Patson Daka there is some rotation bound to happen later on when the European games start.

Players to Watch out from Leicester City in FPL:

James Maddison£7m – Mid

Leicester city midfielders to target for 2021/22 FPL season ~ James Maddison

Maddison finished last season with 8 goals and 7 assists. He is one of the most creative players on the team and provided 51 key passes. With 75 shots over the season, he was only second to Vardy who had 82. 125+ points over the past 3 seasons indicate he is fairly consistent and without any injuries he could easily cross the 150 point mark.

Clearly, Maddison plays a much forward role in the team which looks good from an FPL point of view. Last season he had 2.78 touches in the box/90 and a price of 7m he could be a good budget option to have.

Timothy Castagne£5.5m – Def

Leicester City defenders to target in FPL 2021/22 season ~ Timothy Castange

Castagne had a good debut season for Leicester and had a decent attacking threat too. He scored 2 goals and provided 4 assists playing 2345 mins. Even though his attacking numbers were not great when compared to others he was on top among all other defenders (from Leicester). He managed to get 0.31 shots/90 and 0.80 key passes/90. If he could improve on those numbers he could offer great value as Leicester are generally tight at the back.

Ricardo Pereira£5.5m – Def

Leicester City defenders to target in FPL 2021/22 season ~ Ricardo Pereira

Periera was injured for quite a long time but was back towards the end of last season. He’s a very attacking full back and has scored 123 and 146 points in seasons before that racking up 5 goals and 10 assists during that time. If he can nail down a starting spot this season he could be a great differential

When fit last season Pereira played quite an advanced role and has a great eye for goal. Operating in such areas is something that every FPL manager wants from the defenders and thus could be a great buy.

Leicester City Team Setup:

Last season Leicester played 2 formations mainly. One being the 4-2-3-1 and the other one being the 3-4-1-2. This major shift in the style of play was after Harvey Barnes got injured. Barnes was in the form of his life and was set to have his best season but he was very unfortunate to suffer an injury. In the 3-4-1-2 Vardy and Iheanacho played up top and the latter was on fire. During that time he was unstoppable and a key figure in the attack.

My predicted starting lineup for the 21/22 season

It’s hard to predict how Leicester line up this season with Barnes and Iheanacho. I feel a 4-2-3-1 setup could be used to start with Iheanacho playing on the right. Fofana is another player who could have had a very promising season but it’s really sad to see him get a long-term injury in pre-season a few days back. Luke Thomas who played a few matches at the end of last season could be the starting left-back but that’s still to be seen.

Conclusion on Leicester City FPL assets:

Players like Barnes or Iheanacho could be good options to start with as the fixtures are decent. They offer good value and could start the season strong. Leicester were good at the back too last season and if any of the wing-backs are nailed they could get some attacking returns and be great differentials. Ricardo and Luke Thomas played in good positions last time and should be monitored by FPL managers.
