The Search for the Next Lundstram: Best £4.0M FPL Defenders

It feels like every year now a new £4.0M asset is born (John Lundstram, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tyrick Mitchell, to name a few), and in this post, I will attempt to uncover some of the £4.0M FPL defenders that have the potential to be the new ultimate budget enabler, and perhaps even earn a few points along the way.

Best £4.0M FPL Defenders for the 2021/22 FPL Season

Kostas Tsimikas, Liverpool, 8.5%

Best £4.0M FPL defenders for the 21/22 FPL season ~ Kostas Tsimikas

Rating – 10/10

I won’t beat around the bush here. Kostas Tsimikas is the name on everyone’s lips at the moment in the FPL universe, strangely enough. Sometimes life throws you a curveball and this is certainly an example of that. Andy Robertson suffered an ill-fated injury on Sunday evening, which is set to have him on the sidelines for a number of weeks. Unfortunately for us, we are really in the dark as to how long his ankle injury will keep him out of play for, with Klopp keeping somewhat tight-lipped regarding. Fortunately, we do have, in my opinion, an absolute no-risk potential gem in Kostas Tsimikas.

Kostas Tsimikas is one of the finest examples that validate the famous quote, ‘one door closes, another one opens‘. At £4.0M we would be really foolish to ignore, especially when he took a DIRECT FREE KICK in Monday night’s game. Sure, it hit the wall, but in case you didn’t catch that, HE TOOK A DIRECT FREE KICK. We potentially have Trent Alexander Arnold’s apprentice. How could you possibly say no to that?

It is widely accepted that Tsimikas will be the man to replace Robertson, with whispers of James Milner floating around attempting to defuse our elation at the fact we have a £4.0M defender playing in one of the best defences in the Premier League with some of the kindest fixtures in all of the league right now. Oh, and did I mention Virgil Van Dijk is also poised to be back in the starting XI in the coming weeks? This little Greek gemstone has clean sheet potential, attacking returns potential and bonus potential, for £4.0M. He costs 4% of your overall budget. Seriously, if you haven’t got this man in your team, you are wasting a ginormous opportunity.

Daniel Amartey, Leicester City, 9.9%

Best £4.0M FPL defenders for the 21/22 FPL season ~ Amartey

Rating – 8/10

It was a busy and eventful weekend for our avid FPL community as Daniel Amartey also emerged as a potential £4.0M budget option. Amartey was fielded in the back three in Leicester’s Community Shield game versus Manchester City on Saturday, and this did not go unnoticed. There aren’t many things that would go unnoticed to the millions of watchful eyes in the FPL community, we’d probably be able to find brown sugar spilt on a beach to be honest. (Yes, I’m aware he played in a nationally televised ‘cup final’ and it was literally quite hard not to miss the fact that he played, but run with it).

What received our attention more so was the plaudits that came from Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers post match. Rodgers said: “The more I’ve seen of him, I think he’s going to be a very important player for our squad. Why? Because I think he’s shown he can play at centre-half – he played that earlier on in his career and with the national team – he’s played at right-back here – he would be a different type of right-back in terms of how I would use him – and he can also play in midfield, so I think his value to the squad is very important.

“He’s someone who has really impressed me, with his attitude and with his qualities.”

This praise is further strengthened by the fact the Foxes have a bit of an injury crisis at centre back right now with Wesley Fofana’s horrific leg break last week and Jonny Evans’ foot injury keeping him on the sidelines for approximately another month. With that being said, it could be Daniel Amartey’s place to lose, but keep an eye out for any developments in the transfer market, as Rodgers did not rule out any further signings to cover the area.

Leicester start with a mixed bag of games, but nevertheless, they do have the potential for clean sheets. After all, they did just stop the current Premier League champions from scoring against them on Saturday.

Andrew Omobamidele, Norwich, 2.2%

Best £4.0M FPL defenders for the 21/22 FPL season ~ Andrew Omobamidele

Rating – 5/10

Andrew Omobamidele is another player who has a chance to shine due to an unfortunate injury to the side. With Grant Hanley rumoured to be out of action until the International break, which follows Gameweek 3, Omobamidele looks to be the man tasked with filling in till their captain returns.

Omobamidele started the final eight games in Norwich’s Championship-winning season, and manager Daniel Farke had some nice words to say about his performances: “It was a big, big challenge and task without any first-team experience to step up and to come into the crunch time period of the season. I am pretty, pretty pleased with him.

“To come into a team who desperately needs to win each and every point in each game and then to deliver with this consistency is pretty remarkable.

“When I think about the attacking players teams like Bournemouth and Watford have, okay it is not perhaps Manchester City and Liverpool, but they definitely had Premier League quality.”

Fortunately, (or unfortunately) Omobamidele will get his chance to prove himself versus Manchester City and Liverpool, as Norwich play them in their first three games.

He is almost assured to start at the heart of the defence, and well, if you are backing an upset to happen in any of the aforementioned games, Omobamidele is your man.

There is a small chance he does keep a spot if he impresses enough, but he will need to be doing his best Giorgio Chiellini impression to keep their club captain out of the side.

Ki-Jana Hoever, Wolves, 2.2%

Best £4.0M FPL defenders for the 21/22 FPL season ~ Ki-Jana Hoever

Rating – 4/10

The ex-Liverpool man joined Wolves last summer for £9 million, but we have still yet to see him with a solid run of games in the side. However has played in the preseason but with Nelson Semedo to return prior to GW1, once he finishes isolating, he will more than likely take back his starting spot. In the instance, Nelson Semedo becomes injured, Hoever *should* make the right-back spot his own, so he is definitely one to keep an eye on. He may play the occasional couple minutes, but nothing is to suggest he will be a viable FPL asset – yet.

Tino Livramento, Southampton, 1.7%

Best £4.0M FPL defenders for the 21/22 FPL season ~ Tino Livramento

Rating – 6/10

New summer signing Tino Livramento is another potential candidate for being a nice budget enabler, however, much like Ki-Jana Hoever, it depends on the fitness of the first choice right-back, Kyle Walker-Peters. Unfortunately for Tino, KWP was one of Southampton’s best players last season, so it seems rather unlikely that he will lose his starting spot.

However, it should be noted that the ex-Chelsea man is able to play in right midfield as well as right back. He started his career on the south coast rather well too, getting an assist inside 90 seconds of coming on to the pitch in the saints’ final pre-season friendly versus Athletic Bilbao, setting up Theo Walcott. The young full-back managed to notch up 4 goals and 15 assists last season across all competitions which makes his attacking potential rather evident. It should be noted that he largely featured in youth football last season.

Livramento is definitely one to watch in this regard, and if Walker-Peters was to pick up an unfortunate injury, Tino could potentially become a goldmine.
