If it’s your first season playing FPL then there’ll be moments in some gameweeks when you would be left wondering why did I fall in my overall rank even though i had a decent score which was above average, the reason for that is Effective ownership.
The FPL site/app always shows the ownership of a player but not the effective ownership hence if you want to gain ranks you should know more about what it is.

What is Effective Ownership?
Effective ownership of a player is a calculation that adds together the percentage of managers who started a certain player, percentage of managers who captained a certain player and percentage of managers who have triple captained a player. Effective ownership tells you about how much would your rank benefit from points that your player gets.
In the above image, you can notice that the effective ownership of Bruno is just a bit more than 100%, which indicates that every point Bruno will score it won’t help your rank at all even though you have started him.
Salah in the image has an effective ownership of 130%, which means that if you’ve started him but he is not your captain, your rank will fall by every point he scores
An effective ownership of a player less than 100% is always good for your team since you’ll gain rank for every point that player scores. The lesser the effective ownership, the bigger the green arrow.
How Does Your Captaincy Choice Help In Tackling High Effective Ownership?
Whenever you start a player in your team it means you own a 100% stake of that player and when you captain him the stake of the specific player goes up to 200% and 300% in the case of a triple captain.
Anticipation becomes very important sometimes with effective ownership. For example, if Salah’s ownership is 48% and he has a favorable fixture coming up and you think many people will go for him as their captain and he could have an Effective Ownership of more than 100% in order to avoid a red arrow you can captain him so that if his Effective Ownership is more than 100% after the deadline you won’t get a red arrow for his points, instead you can gain ranks.
Has a player got more than 200% EO?
The first time when a player exceeded an EO of 200% was Kane in the 21/22 season in a double gameweek which meant you’ll not be able to gain ranks unless you triple-captained him
Last season(Haaland) regularly had an EO of around 200% in most gameweeks and crossed 200% on a few occasions!
Conclusion on Effective Ownership
From the very start of the season keep an eye on how the players are doing well and how is their movement in terms of transfers. Getting a player who is doing well and has low effective ownership would help you gain ranks massively and at the same time not having a player with high effective ownership can hamper your rank.
How to check the EO of my FPL players?
Managers can only know the Effective Ownership of players post-deadline and can use livefpl.net, it’s very accurate and helpful.
