FPL GW21 Tips & Preview – Breaking Down Key Dilemmas

Welcome to Insanely Football’s Tips and Dilemmas blog for GW21 of the FPL 2022/23 season. This blog will break down all the popular Dilemmas FPL managers have this week and help you maximize your points for FPL GW21.

FPL GW21 Tips – Preview and Dilemmas Answered

1) Is it worth saving a ‘Free Transfer’ this week?

Avoiding making forced transfers right now can be crucial for your rank at this Fantasy Premier League season stage. If you believe your team is in good shape and there aren’t any major issues to solve, saving a transfer is the right way.

We might get some information about DGW22 after the GW21 deadline. You can only draw so many conclusions from the available information. It’s always better to be patient and get as much information as possible before making your moves. 

No game-changing transfer trends are emerging apart from getting Brighton attackers on your team. You can go on the offensive by bringing in a Brighton midfielder against Leicester and the games after that. You can even go for Fernandes or one of the Arsenal attackers despite a tricky game this week. It’s a high-risk, high-reward strategy and might only suit a few FPL managers. 

Unless you have picked a player at the risk of not starting in Gameweek 21 and you don’t have enough bench cover, you can save the transfer. This will give you two free transfers for Gameweek 22 and one additional gameweek worth of information which can be vital. 

There is no right or wrong answer here, as there is no single way of playing FPL. It depends on how comfortable you are with your team this week and how much risk you will take. If any players would improve your overall squad, lock in that transfer before the deadline.

2) Which Brighton players to go for right now?

There is a lot of buzz around Brighton players right now, which is quite understandable. 

We will start with the defence first. Brighton has not kept only kept two clean sheets in the last 14 fixtures. Even post FPL restart, the Seagulls have managed to keep just a single clean sheet in four games. With better fixtures coming up and the likelihood of maximum numbers of double gameweeks to be scheduled from now till the end of the season, it is worth getting a Brighton defender.

If you want the most nailed option, there is Lewis Dunk (£4.7m). He has started every game this season without getting subbed even once. You won’t get much goal threat with him (xGI – 0.03), but we have seen in the past that he can score the odd goal from set pieces. 

If you are looking for a player with more attacking threat, Pervis Estupiñán (£4.5m) plays Brighton’s full-back/wing-back role. He has also started regularly since GW14 and has two attacking returns this season. His goal involvement per 90 mins for the season (0.13) is also higher than Dunks. 

Now, coming to Brighton’s attack. The team has scored twelve goals in the last four games, and March has been instrumental in those performances. He has contributed to 50% of those goals (4G+2A), getting three double-digit hauls in the same duration. 

Compared to other Brighton options like Mitoma/Ferguson, he looks better. March has been more explosive with okay underlying stats but has three double-digit hauls in the last four games. He looks excellent on the right side of the BHA attack.

Brighton’s other midfielder, Mitoma, definitely does better for xGI (0.58 to March’s 0.44) and looks like the more steady option. He will consistently deliver 6-8 points on average per game. 

Mitoma is the one to consider if you are looking for a long-term safe pick. But if you see this Brighton transfer as short-term and are looking at getting immediate gains, go for March instead.

*Ferguson (£4.5m), playing as a forward for Brighton, is not high on my watchlist. He might not be as nailed as the Brighton midfielders. There are so many decent options available for the third striker spot. Going for Ferguson feels like wasting an attacking spot.

3) Who are the best budget midfielders to consider ahead of FPL GW21?

For this blog, I have considered any midfielder ranging between £4.5m-6.5m as a ‘budget’ option. Now this range can be different for you, which is fine. 

Looking at the upper limit first, we have Rodrigo from Leeds, priced at £6.4m. He has had a good campaign getting 11 attacking returns this season. This includes a great run of form from GW13-16, where he scored five goals in four matches. Leeds has good fixtures in the upcoming weeks, and there is also the possibility of a double gameweek shortly. Suppose you are looking at a differential pick and can’t afford the more expensive Odegaard (£6.8m). In that case, Rodrigo can be a decent alternative. 

Miguel Almirón from Newcastle is another FPL option who has looked in great touch scoring nine times and assisting twice this season. The Newcastle attacker is the 2nd highest-scoring midfielder in the game, just three points behind the leader Odegaard. At just £5.9m, that is an absolute steal. There is a slight issue with him, though. Since the FPL restart, he has only returned in one game and hasn’t scored in the last three matches. Even if we consider the eye test, he has not looked that convincing, and it might be time to look for a replacement.

Potential replacements can be your Brighton midfielders, Solly March and Kaoru Mitoma. Both are great options in the attack, around £5m. They allow you to save money and target Brighton’s good fixtures in the short term. Make sure you have some bench cover if Brighton blanks in GW25, and you will be good to go.

Other Brighton players, i.e. Pascal Groß and Leandro Trossard, are not worth considering. Groß has 9 attacking returns (6G+3A) this season and is still joint top among all Brighton players for FPL points this season. Lately, he has been playing a more withdrawn role, and options like Mitoma and March have emerged, making Groß a slightly less appealing FPL asset. 

Trossard, priced higher than £6.5m in the game, moved to Arsenal after falling out with Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi. We don’t know if Trossard will get regular game time and where exactly he will play. Because of these unknown elements, it’s a wait-and-watch situation with Trossard for the time being.

Another player in the £5m price range is Granit Xhaka. One could have considered him a great value option early on in the season. Now, with the emergence of Odegaard as a great FPL pick alongside the already-established Martinelli and Saka, it becomes challenging to consider Xhaka. To make matters worse, Trossard is in the mix too, and there are just better midfield options than Xhaka right now. 

If you want to go safe, you can still consider Andreas Pereira. He has been Fulham’s chief creator in attack, providing seven assists this season. 76 points in total and ahead of players like Son, Sterling, Mount, Bowen etc., is some achievement. His fixtures could be better, but Fulham are a good attacking side, and you can always bench Pereira for the more challenging games.

4) Which defenders to consider for FPL GW21 and beyond?

It’s been a tough season for defenders as premium picks like Trent, Robertson, Van Dijk, James, Chilwell etc., have all had a season to forget. Cancelo, who was getting consistent starts, has lost his place in the team and is undoubtedly not worth his premium price anymore. 

On the other hand, we have players from Newcastle and Arsenal who occupy the top seven spots for FPL points among all defenders this season. Trippier, in particular, has been immense and is a must-have. There is also an excellent case for a doubling up on the Newcastle defence with one of Botman/Burn. Both are budget options and are playing for the best defence in the league right now. 

If you are looking for a solid premium option, then Luke Shaw is great. This season, he has been brilliant for Man Utd, showing his versatility by playing at CB occasionally. The positional change from LB to CB may need improvement from his attacking output, but it does well for his bonus points potential if Man Utd keep a clean sheet.

There is a chance that Man Utd will get a Double Gameweek in GW22, and Shaw is a strong option. 

If you plan to get in Man Utd/Newcastle defenders, be aware there is a possible blank gameweek in GW25 on the horizon. Do factor in how to navigate that week when planning these defender moves. 

Talking about some more good defenders, another great pick is Ben White from Arsenal. He provides better value than Gabriel and Saliba as he is cheaper and priced at only £4.7m. That is about a 0.5-0.6m saving, which can be used elsewhere to make essential upgrades.

It feels strange to me not talking about Man City defenders straight away. That is how problematic it has been to guess Man City’s backline. On top of that, they have only kept a single clean sheet in the last seven games. 

Man City defenders are not a must, but if you want to go for one, Stones might be the most nailed pick. He has been decent for City but only provides a little goal threat. Other attacking defenders, like Lewis, Cancelo, Walker etc., are rotated a lot, and it’s better to avoid them altogether. 

Brighton has some good fixtures coming up, but they are not keeping clean sheets right now. Brentford, like Brighton, isn’t the tightest of defences. I will avoid both teams for defender options. Hugo Bueno (£3.9m) can be an enabler option if you are considering a cheaper defender pick. Most weeks, he is not to play, but he has a confirmed fixture in GW25 when it might be challenging to field three defenders. An excellent 5th defender option, in my opinion.

5) What to do with Man City players going into FPL GW21?

The first name we have to talk about is Kevin De Bruyne. He didn’t feature in Man City’s 3-2 win against Tottenham in GW20. One major positive is that he was rested entirely and will likely start against the Wolves team this week, barring any late injury concerns. Wait for any final comments by Pep. If you don’t get anything concrete, hold him and play him in your XI.

There are doubts about most of the other realistic Man City options. Haaland will definitely start. Beyond that, it can be any one of Mahrez, Grealish or Foden starting in Man City’s front three. 

If you own Mahrez, you keep him for GW21. He was excellent in the second half against Tottenham, contributing to three of the four goals Man City scored. Don’t be surprised if he is on the bench, though. That is just classic FPL for you! 🙂

The situation with Phil Foden is an odd one. He also didn’t feature against Tottenham, and there are high chances a fully rested Foden will start against Wolves. Wrt to Foden too. I’d keep him for at least one more week and assess based on what happens in GW21. 

Coming to other defenders like Cancelo, Walker and Lewis, it is okay to sell them this week. Prioritise defenders from Arsenal as a replacement. You can even look at Shaw or a double-up on the Newcastle defence. It becomes a bit trickier if you have Akanji, Ake or even Stones. I’d hold all three against Wolves. There are high chances all three make the playing XI in GW21.
