Article written by @soumyadut(Do follow) on the “Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders(£6.0-£7.5 Million)” for the 2023/24 FPL Season
Have you seen the movie Hacksaw Ridge? The film focuses on the World War II experiences of Desmond Doss, an American pacifist combat medic who refused to carry or use a weapon. The Army made Doss’ life hell during training throwing everything at him – from abuses to shoes as they deemed Doss unworthy of fighting by their side. In fact, they considered him to be a liability. All that changed in Okinawa in the spring of 1945. Doss’ company faced a gruelling task: Climb a steep, jagged cliff — sometimes called Hacksaw Ridge — to a plateau where thousands of heavily armed Japanese soldiers were waiting for them. Under a barrage of gunfire and explosions, Doss crawled on the ground and kept saving men after men – 75 of them including the very mates who had shamed him. President Harry Truman awarded Doss the Medal of Honor in 1945.
The mid-premium midfielders are a tad like Doss. They may not carry the same venom apparently as your big guns. But they are your rank savers when your Salahs and Haalands blank on certain occasions. Hello and welcome to the second category of midfielders that I am going to cover – the mid-premium bucket (£6.0 m – 7.5 m). I am Soum and I hope by the end of the article you will have slightly more information to make your decisions regarding your FPL team.

Best Mid-Priced FPL Midfielders (£6.0 -£7.5 Million)
£6.0 Millon FPL Midfielders
Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool)
Mac Allister is expected to fill in the still vacant shoes of Georginio Wijnaldum. Mac Allister made 70 tackles in 2022/23, more than any Liverpool player. But Mac is not just expected to be a CDM. Klopp expects his new signing be a lot more involved in the attack. And the World Cup winner might just be the right man to do that. He had 86 shots last season, bettered only by Salah amongst Liverpool players. 34 of these were on target and a similar 34 were shots in the box, both bettered by only Salah and Darwin amongst Liverpool players. His XG and XGI were also only behind Salah and Darwin (among Pool players). To sum up, Mac Allister is capable of filling Wijnaldum’s shoes to improve Liverpool’s defence and also add to the final third contributions which Gini used to do so effectively. The only con which might work against Mac Allister is he will no longer be on penalties, like he was at Brighton.

Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest)
Nottingham Forest signed a staggering 30 players in 22/23. That’s more than some of the team’s full squad. But the man who shone the brightest amongst the crowd of newcomers was Morgan Gibbs-White who arrived from Wolves for a club-record fee. Gibbs-White topped almost every metric for Forest: Key Passes, Big Chances Created, shots, xA, Assists, xGI, GI and hence unsurprisingly BPS and overall points as well. But what’s remarkable is that he did it consistently by picking up the highest mins for his club as well playing 37 games out of 38. The only problem is Forest’s horror opening fixtures – they face Arsenal (A), Man Utd (A), Chelsea (A), Man City (A) and Liverpool (A) in their first 10 GWs. So maybe it’s better to wait and watch Gibbs-White for the first few games.

Solly March, Pascal Groß & Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton & Hove Albion)
This is the one of the biggest debates doing the rounds among FPL managers – how many BHA assets to accommodate and which of them? And from my experience, the one we leave out invariably outscores everyone else. First let’s understand why the trio is in such hot demand.
In the second half of the season (GW 20-38), De Zerbi’s team is ranked 1st for shots, shots on target, shots in the box, big chances and most importantly xG.
Couple this with the fact that each of the first 3 matches of Brighton has an FDR of 2.
Now let’s try to understand which of these three or how many of these three should you consider.
Basis this, if we take the cumulative rank March comes out on Top with a weighted score of 27, followed by Groß (35) and Mitoma a distant 3rd with a weighted score of 44.
But let’s be fair to Mitoma. He broke into the first team quite late. So let’s relook at the same numbers for the period when BHA trumped the likes of Man City for xG ie GWs 20-38
Now Mitoma comes out on Top with a weighted score of 29, followed by March (32) and then Groß with 44.
What does this numerical mumbo jumbo tell you?
If we take the entire season March is the standout pick of the lot. Mitoma took his time to shine during the second half of the campaign. But March wasn’t too far behind in the second half too as evident with the small gap between him and Mitoma; whereas the same gap is huge (in favour of March) when the entire season is taken into context.
Groß will give you assurance of mins but not of points.
My suggestion: Go with March followed by Mitoma. If you’re desperate for the 3rd BHA asset as well, it can be Pervis Estupiñán or even Julio Enciso (who was covered in detail in the previous article).
Note of caution – BHA fixtures turn bad post GW 3. So if you’re thinking of 3 assets, think of ways to get rid of them as well. Going for 3rd BHA MF might not be the best idea given the plethora of options at your disposal

Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford)
Mbeumo’s stats when Toney didn’t play (last 2 seasons):
- 10 games
- 6 goals
- 3 assists
We are also assuming that he’ll be on penalty duty till the time Toney is suspended. Brentford’s fixtures are kind too
Mbeumo managed 9G/9A & 150 FPL points last season when he was enlisted as a forward. Among midfielders priced £6.5 m or less, Mbeumo ranked 3rd for xA, Big Chances Created, 2nd for Bonus Points, Shots on Target, xGI, xG, 1st for xPoints, Big Chances, Shots in the Box and GI
A change of position also means more points for goals & clean sheet points for Mbeumo this season.
The only drawback I can think of is Brennan Johnson has been heavily linked with Brentford. He can potentially play as a ST for Brentford. So can Kevin Schade, who was signed last season and Yoane Wissa who made 38/38 appearances (16 starts) last season with 7 goals and 4 FPL assists.
Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace)
The hype around Eze is understandable. Among midfielders priced £6.5 m or less, Eze’s numbers were quite good last season
Among MF priced £6.5 m or below | Eze |
Points | 1st |
Bonus | 1st |
Goals Scored | 3rd |
But this where the good story ends. He outperformed his xG and xGI by a decent margin
xG | 7.12 |
G | 10 |
xGI | 12.6 |
GI | 15 |
This makes sense as he is not in the Top 15 when it comes to Shots in the Box. And if you look at the video of his goals from last season, the picture becomes clearer as quite of them are bangers from outside the box, which are treats for the eyes but not assurances for guaranteed points. Palace’s fixtures are also not as straightforward as Brentford’s. I would suggest observing Eze till GW 10 after which, Palace’s favourable run starts
Pre-Season form: Eze has been in great form during the pre-season.

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)
Bowen lit up the Championship for Hull City as he was scored 52 goals in just 117 games across three seasons. Soon West Ham came calling and Bowen took to the EPL like a duck to water. In the 3 full seasons he has played so far for the Hammers he has scored 141, 206 and 145 points. Although he didn’t reach the same heights as 21-22 season last year, he more than made up for it as he scored in the 90th minute to secure a 2-1 win over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final thus ending West Ham’s 58-year wait for a European trophy. He has started the pre-season in electric form picking up 3 goals and 2 assists in 90 mins across 2 games. 2 of West Ham’s first 4 games are against Bournemouth and Luton – both with an FDR of 2. But they also face Chelsea, Brighton, Man City, Liverpool, Newcastle and Aston Villa in the first 9 GWs. So wait for the WHU fixtures to turn favourable which will also give you the required time to assess Bowen before bringing him in probably around GW10
Pre-season form: Bowen has been in brilliant form during the pre-season friendlies.

Raheem Sterling (Chelsea)
The lad can play – there’s no doubt about that.
Before last season, 7 out of 8 times he has scored ~ 150 points in FPL – the only exception being 15-16 when he moved to a new club. Last year also, he moved to a new club. So it doesn’t require a Sherlock Holmes to decipher the reason for the drop in his performance as he takes a little time to adjust to new surroundings. The fiasco which was happening at Chelsea didn’t help much either.
But even then, Sterling topped the charts for almost every metric among Chelsea outfield players – Shots in the Box, Shots on Target, Big Chances, Big Chances Created, Key Passes, xA, Assists, xG, Goals, xGI, GI, Bonus Points, xPoints and most importantly FPL points. I am not even sure if this can be termed as underperformance.
This might be the year where Sterling explodes using the famous “new manager bounce”. We have seen wingers like Son wreak havoc under Pochettino. After the host of departures, the 3 wingers at Chelsea are Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke. Sterling is the most experienced of the lot having won multiple EPL titles. Hence he might get plenty of game time this season. In fact last season as well, he was 2nd in terms of matches and mins played in EPL among his team mates (non GK).
Watch out for the first two GWs and then bring him in between GW 3-8 and GW 16-24

Phil Foden (Manchester City)
Last year, with Sterling gone the expectations were ripe that Foden will get more mins. But that was not the case, and his appendectomy operation didn’t help Foden’s cause either. Yet Foden registered his highest ever FPL points last season – such was his impact.
Foden’s rank among Man City MFs | 22-23 Season |
Mins | 7th |
Shots on Target | 1st |
Shots in the Box | 1st |
Big Chances | 2nd |
xG | 2nd |
Goals Scored | 1st |
xGI | 2nd |
GI | 2nd |
Bonus Points | 2nd |
FPL Points | 2nd |
So it is clear that Phil Foden’s success this season does not depend on his role or positioning; it depends on his minutes. This season Gundogan and Mahrez have left. There are rumours that Bernardo Silva will leave too and KDB is injured for the first few games. Will this be the year when Phil Foden finally arrives? City’s first 7 fixtures are extremely kind with 4 of them against sides who were promoted this year or last year. Will Haaland alone be enough City cover for these juicy fixtures?

James Maddison (Spurs)
James Maddison was playing for a squad which got relegated. He started only 28 matches and had an underwhelming campaign by his standards. Yet his numbers are quite decent when taken into context.
Maddison’s rank in 22-23 Season | Among MFs under £7.5 m | Among Spurs MFs |
xA | 4th | 1st |
Big Chances Created | 4th | 1st |
Key Passes | 4th | 1st |
xGI | 4th | 2nd |
GI | 2nd | 1st |
Goals Scored | 5th | 1st |
Shots | 2nd | 1st |
“Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play,” said Levy when he introduced Postecoglou. If we believe in what Levy said, Maddison might have a season similar to 21-22. Unlike last season, he will have good finishers in Son and Kane (compared to Iheanacho and Vardy). Maddison might be the cheap enabler to the Spurs attack who have exceptionally good fixtures between GW 3 and GW 12
The only two factors which might work against Maddison is (a) Kane leaving and (b) the fact that Madders will no longer have the lion’s share of set pieces.
