Best £4.0 Million FPL Defenders for the 2023/24 season

Issa Kaboré – Luton Town

Luton Town have signed Issa Kaboré on loan from Man City and he comes in at 4.0 Million on FPL. The young defender was on loan at Olympique de Marseille last season and he featured 29 times for the Ligue 1 side including 4 champions league games. Before heading out on loan again Man City extended his contract as well!

He’s expected to be the first-choice RWB for Luton this season and offers a better goal threat than Bell, Another 4.0 million defender from Luton who is expected to slot in as one of the three CBs.

Here’s his heatmap from last season in Ligue 1

From Sofascore

Verdict: Safe and the most explosive option amongst the 4.0 Million defenders currently!

Jordan Beyer- Burnley

Best £4.0 Million FPL Defenders for the 2023/24 season- Jordan Beyer
  • Position: Center Back
  • Stats from last season in Championship: 30 matches played, 29 starts, 1 goal, 2 assists, 0.08 xGI/90

Burnley had the best defence in the Championship last season both in terms of Goals Conceded and Expected Goals Conceded. Beyer started 29 games last season- Started all the games when he was fit. He is an integral part of Kompany’s possession-based football and could be up for Bonus points as well if Burnley keep clean sheets.

Verdict

Safe and Best Pick 4.0 million defender pick right now. Technically quality player and starts every game when fit.

Amari’i Bell- Luton Town

Best £4.0 Million FPL Defenders for the 2023/24 season- Bell
  • Position: LCB/LB
  • Stats from last season in Championship: 44 matches played, 43 starts, 1 goal, 1 assist, 0.08 xGI/90

Bell was the 6th Highest scoring defender in GAFFR Fantasy(Championship Fantasy) last season. He is nailed to start at LCB for Luton this season in a 3-5-2 setup.

Verdict

Nailed on for minutes, but don’t expect Luton Town to keep too many clean sheets. Can chip with 2 points when required as the 15th player- Don’t expect too much from him.

George Baldock- Sheffield United

Best £4.0 Million FPL Defenders for the 2023/24 season- Baldock
  • Position: RCB/RWB
  • Stats from last season in Championship: 36 matches played, 33 starts, 1 goal, 3 assists, 0.12 xGI/90

Not at all a new name. Baldock was a prominent figure in the Lord Lundstram season(2019/20 season when Sheffield finished 9th). In fact, he played 90 minutes in all 38 games.

Baldock’s numbers when Sheffield played in Premier League:

  • 2019/20- 38 matches played, 38 starts, 2 goals, 4 assists, 13 clean sheets, 0.13 xGI/90, 142 FPL Points
  • 2020/21- 32 matches played, 32 starts, 0 goals, 2 assists, 4 clean sheets, 0.06 xGI/90, 63 FPL Points

There is an issue that comes with Baldock though- Rotation risk. There is Jayden Bogle(£4.5m) who also completes for the same RB slot. Bogle played 20 games(16 starts) in Championship last season- so there is surely competition for that position. When both Baldock and Bogle were both fit/available and competed for the same position last season, Baldock started 8 games while Bogle started 5. So Baldock has the edge, but not by much. It is Baldock’s spot to lose, but Bogle is waiting there.

Verdict

High risk, High reward. Most attacking 4.0 Defender when compared to Beyer and Bell. But there is rotation risk as mentioned. If Bogle is injured/Baldock is clearly the first choice in pre-season games, surely Baldock has to be the pick.

Baldock has also got a goal during the pre-season!

Sheffield United Friendlies Summary:

  • Basham A
  • Lowe A
  • Baldock ⚽️
  • Slimane ⚽️
  • McBurnie A
  • Osborn ⚽️
  • Berge A

Norrington David

Best £4.0 Million FPL Defenders for the 2023/24 season- Norrington David

Rhys Norrington-Davies is another 4.0 Million defender option to watch out for from Sheffield United this season. The versatile defender played predominantly as a CB last season but also covered as an LWB in a few games. He played regularly till Matchday 16 for Sheffield before an injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

Other £4.0 Million FPL Defenders to keep an eye on for the 2023/24 season

  • Lamptey– Injury-prone but has exciting potential when he plays. The second choice to Veltman. Worth considering if he stays fit and gets a run of games.
  • Van Hecke– Down the pecking order to Dunk and Webster. But a few injuries/transfer news could change things
  • Malo Gusto– Second choice at the moment to Reece James who is injury prone
  • Charlie Taylor– Backup center back(Not left-back these days) for Burnley. Can be an option if there are injuries
  • Holgate– Versatile and can play almost anywhere in back 4. Can breakthrough if there are few injuries
  • Branthwaite– Impressive on his loan spell away from Everton at PSV last season. Remains to be seen what happens in the transfer window.

Sean Dyche on Branthwaite(as on 13/07/2023):

Absolutely. The Euros win was fantastic for them and many congratulations for their success. Jarrad had a good campaign away from Everton. We’re looking forward to seeing him at close quarters when he’s back but these lads do need a break as they’ve played a lot of football and they are still relatively young.

  • Mads Andersen– Club record signing for Luton. Can play anywhere in the back three.

There may be better 4.0 million defenders coming in due to summer signings/loan moves/injuries. We should get more picks or better clarity on these picks with the help of Pre-Season Friendlies and more transfer news. We will keep the blog updated with the latest information.
