FPL GW29 Tips – Key Questions/Dilemmas Answered

1) How many hits to take this week?

FPL GW29 Tips- Is it okay to take hits this week?

Taking hits, especially in double gameweeks, is underrated. It depends on what players you are taking a hit for and how much potential there is for a good points haul. Also, what players are you letting go, and what’s their haul potential this week?

It is a perfect window if you are a risk-taking manager chasing rank. If you are wildcarding in GW30, you can take -4/-8s, go for one-week punts and get a few differentials in your team for GW29. Even without a wildcard, attacking the double fixtures in GW29 can boost your rank in the short run.

Depending on your available chips, you can plan for a slightly longer term and get in players from Brighton, Man Utd and even Liverpool, as all have a double gameweek in GW34. In such a scenario, even taking a -8/-12 is justifiable if its sets you up nicely for the upcoming gameweeks. This is helpful, especially when you don’t have the Wildcard and Free Hit chip.

2) When to use the Wildcard chip? (GW29 vs 30 vs 33)

Is it worth playing the Wildcard Ahead of FPL GW29?

Wildcard in GW29 allows you to attack the doubles if you don’t have enough double gameweek players. Generally, if you are not happy with your overall team this week, in that case, you can use the Wildcard right now instead of taking multiple hits to set up your ideal team.

It is quite a team-dependent strategy, but using the Wildcard prevents you from using the Bench Boost chip this week, which may/may not be ideal for your team. Keep that in mind before you hit that Wildcard button.

By delaying the Wildcard by one week, you can dead-end your team in GW29 and prepare a new team for GW30-38. Depending on the availability of the Free Hit chip, you can plan long-term for the Doubles in GW34 or follow a balanced approach and prepare for GW32 and G34. (in case of no free hit)

Another alternative is to use the Wildcard in GW33 and set up a Bench Boost in GW34. This is a possibility if you have a good team for GW29. You must see your current bench and compare it with the bench in GW34. Whichever bench you feel will score more points, you go with that particular strategy.

3) Is it worth selling Arsenal players this week?

FPL GW29 Tips- Hold or Sell Arsenal Assets

Starting with the Arsenal defence, selling Saliba is straightforward as he is injured. It’s even worth selling players like Gabriel and Zinchenko for a Double Gameweek defender option this week.

Since the FPL restart, Arsenal ranks 8th for xGC/90 and Big chances conceded/90. Their defence is not elite anymore, as they have only kept 5 clean sheets since the restart and 3 in their last 10 matches. Plus, the injury to Saliba doesn’t help. With only a single game this week and trickier games coming up, you can look towards Chilwell/Shaw as potential replacements.

It’s tricky when it comes to their attackers. Despite all their defensive troubles, Arsenal is still an excellent attack. They can easily score 3-4 goals against the leaky Leeds defence in GW29.

Stats since FPL restart (GW17 onwards)

Saka vs Odegaard vs Martinelli

  • Points – 94 vs 76 vs 80
  • Bonus Points – 11 vs 10 vs 7
  • Goals+ Assists – 12 vs 9 vs 9
  • xGI – 6.73 vs 7.11 vs 6.40
  • Shots in the box – 31 vs 20 vs 30
  • Big Chances – 4 vs 2 vs 7
  • Big Chances Created – 4 vs 6 vs 1

There is not a massive difference in stats for all three Arsenal attackers. Saka has performed better in recent games, and because he is on penalties with high ownership, you can hold him for GW29. It’s a safe strategy and looks good if you want to consolidate rank.

Suppose you are on a double-up on the Arsenal attack. In that case, you can sell Martinelli/Odegaard to get in players like Maddison/Fernandes/Salah. This may be required if you are chasing points and are trying to gain rank.

4) What to do with Erling Haaland?

FPL GW29 Tips- What to do with Haaland?

Erling Haaland is nursing a groin injury ahead of Man City’s game vs Liverpool game and it is clearly not known if he’ll play the game or not. It’s been confirmed that Haaland will be assessed after Man City’s training on Friday. Although Pep also mentioned that he spoke with him and added that he feels good.

Your position is pretty simple if you don’t have him in your team right now. You monitor Haaland this week and see his fitness situation before the GW30 deadline. You can get him for the Southampton game if he is fully fit by that point.

If you have him in your team and are not playing the Bench Boost chip this week, you can just put him on the bench and monitor his progress. You can sell him for a double gameweek player too if you want to play more aggressively and feel confident that he might not play vs Liverpool.

In a scenario where you are Wildcarding this week, you can take him out and go for forward options like Watkins, Isak or even the Chelsea attackers and switch one of these picks or Kane to get him back for GW30. (provided he is fit). Alternatively, you can buy him and then bench him this week.

Man City play in the early kick off and there should be early team news which could confirm if Haaland is starting or not. You can also leave it late and decide on Haaland based on the early team news, but do note a lot of managers will try to do this and the FPL website has crashed a few times in the past before a deadline because of this.

5) Best forwards to target in Gameweek 29?

FPL GW29 Tips- Best Forwards to Target

There are a plethora of forwards to choose from for the doubles in Gameweek 29.

Watkins and Toney are popular picks going into GW29 but don’t have the best fixtures. Both have tricky doubles, but I prefer to get in Watkins as a transfer out of the two this week. The Aston Villa forward has been in good form recently, getting 8 attacking returns in his last 8 games. Toney is up against BHA and MUN and is on 9 yellow cards. One more booking, and he gets a 2 match ban.

Regarding differential forwards, Alexander Isak is a great budget option. With Wilson struggling to remain fit, Isak is a nailed option in the Newcastle attack. He has scored 3 goals in his last 2 games, getting 20 points and is also on penalties. Suppose you are trying to get slightly more premium options in defence or midfield. In that case, Isak is an excellent forward buy this week.

Havertz/Felix are also worth considering if you are looking at ultra-differential picks. Coming to Felix, he scored 8 points in the previous home game. He has looked sharp over the International Break scoring for Portugal and is a low rotation risk amongst Chelsea players.

Coming to Harry Kane, and he is still an excellent hold. I don’t see a situation where we must sell Harry Kane this week. The fixture run is perfect for Tottenham despite no doubles. Kane has been super consistent this season, scoring 21 goals, and he can be a great captaincy alternative to Haaland in GW31.

6) Bench Boost in GW29 vs GW34?

FPL GW29 Tips- Bench Boost GW29 vs Bench Boost GW34

Many FPL managers are contemplating using the Bench Boost chip in Double GW29 or 34. The ultimate potential depends on what players you have on the bench and their respective matchups.

Bench Boost in GW29

  • Use it this week to take advantage of the double gameweeks for 12 teams. Even teams like Arsenal, Man City and Tottenham have an excellent single gameweek fixtures providing you with a great chance to score maximum points.
  • Using the BB this week, you can focus mainly on playing XI for the doubles in GW34 by taking money from your team’s bench and making your XI stronger.
  • Your bench this week will most likely have players from Newcastle/West Ham, Arsenal or even Tottenham and all of these teams have good potential this week.

Bench Boost in GW34

  • Bench Boost in GW34 is a bit challenging to nail.
  • Premium teams like Man City, Man United and Liverpool have a double gameweek and playing the bench boost would stop you from investing in premium players like the Man City MIDs, Salah, Bruno or even the Liverpool defence.
  • You are most likely going to target Newcastle against Southampton for GW34. Even Leicester has a good game against Everton. Other teams like Arsenal and Tottenham have tricky games, and the bench points ceiling looks slightly lower than GW29.

Overall, it’s better to use the Bench Boost in GW29 when compared to GW34 as it allows you to have a stronger playing XI in GW34 and take advantage of some premium teams having really good double gameweek fixtures.
