One of the most memorable international tournaments of recent years has just gotten over but Football Mania continues!! We are back from the World Cup with a once-in-a-lifetime break in FPL and of course, people have started playing around with their drafts. There is a confusion among FPL managers in general- while this does feel like Pre-Season, we do have stats from the first 16 GWs and this means we now debate whether to consider or ignore the earlier stats.

Generally, a Wildcard leads to an initial bias towards attacking fixtures, and playing differentials, with Fixtures, leads to Form a popular adage. However, these are not simple decisions to make and a balance between short-term and long-term fixtures is very important. Fixture Planning is of course very crucial aspect of every wildcard and hence, let us start with having a look at the fixtures as things stand currently.
FPL GW17-22 Fixture Ticker
We have sorted GW 17-22 ( 6 GWs) for our reference using FFScout Fixture Ticker:-
Let’s not forget there are still some doubles being announced with Arsenal, Brighton, Everton, and Palace possibly looking to add fixtures to its forte. Ben Crellin is a Twitter page to follow during these times for continued clarity and better planning.
Now without further delay, let us have a look at the Twitter Template and discuss a bit on why it is so popular and does it make sense to follow it.
FPL GW17 Twitter Template Team
At first look, the team looks balanced with bench options expected to be double Fulham attack & Patterson with Ward as GK bench.
The template team also boasts of:
- Liv double attack
- City combination of Attack & Def
- Trippier & James as set and forget fullbacks with White as possible 4th def/backup
- A very attractive midfield of Salah, Rashford, Almiron, and Martinelli
Now, let us dive deep into the above team and see where the strengths are and where the opportunities lie.
FPL GW17 Twitter Template Team – Goalkeeper
I think Ward is such a beautiful choice now available to us thanks to his spectacular finish to the pre-WC times. He is into the Top 5 with his returns and at 4m, he is an asset to begin with as Leicester have started strengthening their defence with 5 clean sheets of his last 6 fixtures to go into the break. To pair with him, the template has Kepa thanks to the fixture ticker- this looks good as well.
However, in the case of budget- think DDG, and Pope are better long-term first choices. At the same time, if you are looking for money- the case can be made to go with double Leicester GK and save 0.5M+ to invest it in the other areas.

FPL GW17 Twitter Template Team – Defenders
We started the season with City, Arsenal, and Newcastle ruling the roost absolutely with stellar defensive performances. So, it is great to see we have all the 3 defensive assets with Cancelo also acting as a price cover with the opportunity to jump around in case Liverpool’s defence awakes. I think overall these 3 choices don’t require a debate and are an easy fit into your team unless you have price issues.
Chelsea have two superb fixtures to begin with and with Potter confirming the James return, it is only sensible Twitter is already up there on him but given the vast variety of options in Chelsea’s attack and lack of predictability, we can understand why we see only 1 Chelsea asset. Chelsea are facing City in a double GW which I feel is very tricky as a James owner as you would be left wondering if James starts both and if he doesn’t- honestly expecting him to start just City match.
Everton did very well in the first 10 GWs of the season and Patterson, when fit, feels like a sure starter. So, this is a very solid team defensively with James acting as a high price high return punt.

FPL GW17 Twitter Template Team – Midfielders
Midfield is where the opportunities lie as we had some fantastic assets evolve with one Miguel Almiron leading the chart and all Top 10 midfielders with returns > 75 points. Rashford and Andreas come in the Top 20 category but given the way, fixtures are aligned for United and the possibility of counters against Arsenal and City, it just makes sense to start with him.
Post the Carling Cup match- the debate has already started on Salah vs KDB- Ideally, I think KDB has the edge as he is a consistent performer and has now 8 points more than Salah. KDB also comes back from a humiliating WC campaign which means there would be a fire burning in his heart to lead City back to the top. Salah comes off a break and while he has a lot to prove, injuries in the Liverpool team has so far meant- their attack still feels disjointed.
The Pro here is Salah is going to be part of a 2 man attack and Darwin is looking to create more and more for him- hence, playing in his favor. I am leaning towards KDB as a long-term pick and he also has solid fixtures to begin but I think it is easy to remember- Salah on form is not fixture-dependent so we just need to see if he hits his stride early. He also improved a lot as the season progressed with the new formation helping Liverpool to get him much closer to goal.
I think there is no debate that Almiron has earned his way into our FPL squads- there are still doubters but I think we need to start with him and then see if we need to move out rather than the reverse.
Much has been written about how Martinelli ended the last 6 GWs where he was tremendously outperformed by Odegaard. With Arsenal fixtures looking tough, there are voices to sell him. I feel he is an asset who is joint 5th in Points and constantly ticks along. He might lack the explosiveness of Rashford’s returns but boy, he is consistent. I think he is someone to watch like Miggy but ideally would like to start with him. If not Martinelli- I think Trossard deserves a shout especially as we look for further announcements for Brighton’s double/triple GWs.
Both Arsenal and Brighton might get some sudden announcements with respect to Double. Arsenal already have a double planned later with City and Brentford at Home. Another double would mean Martinelli should not be touched unless it is for Bukayo Saka and that price point.
I have to add a thorough disadvantage of the template is the miss of an 8m price point. Currently, Maddison, Saka, and Foden are all in the Top 10 of Midfielders. Ideally, I would have liked to be able to start with 1 of these. (Foden/Saka).

FPL GW17 Twitter Template Team – Forwards
Haaland has changed this season with a numero Uno performance so far. He has already scored 18 goals and has 3 additional assists to his pocket as we are yet to hit the midway mark here in the FPL season. I don’t think we need to discuss this any further here.
While Kane has been a consistent performer this season being only second player with more than 100 points- his late return, tough fixtures, and Penalty Miss are perhaps factors playing on everyone’s minds as they are looking to start with Darwin Nunez.
Nunez has been a good player when starting- has 5 goals in 7 starts so far. However, the possibility of doubling up on Liverpool’s attack feels a bit premature to me. The Haaland-Kane combo settles the team easily but getting Nunez means you get an additional forward, something a lot of managers want to keep especially to attack Fulham double with Mitrovic.
Mitrovic, while a superb long-term option is currently struggling with injury and as things stand now has not trained with his team post-World Cup. Good alternatives in the same price range are- Martial, Nketiah, and Adams thanks to Sou fixtures. There is also a possibility to pick 2 of these price point forwards and use the extra money to upgrade Andreas Perreira, especially with Trossard, or use it to go to an 8 Million price point in the midfield. This is something FPL managers have to think about and take a call. My money is in this approach, to begin with.
These are my initial thoughts looking and discussing the Twitter Template. For more detailed views, do follow our podcast as we get deeper into these discussions and also share our current team drafts and plans ahead.
