A Friend In Need Is a Friend Indeed – Best £4.5m MID options in FPL

Fantasy Premier League season 21/22 is knocking at the door and if you are yet to decide who to take as the midfield enabler in your team, then you’ve come to the right place. Choosing £4.5m FPL MID options might not seem to be among the most important decisions, but they can actually become valuable when your team is in bad shape after an unexpected injury blow or a red card. They are like the friend in need. You don’t want to start them week in week out but again you might have to trust them to go through one odd week whenever needed.

Before going further do vote in this week’s Gameweek 1 allaboutfpl captaincy poll. The same will be available in the captaincy analysis and metrics blog written by @AK_FPL1. The metrics has been delivering consistently with a success of more than 80% since debuting in GW29 last year and is absolutely free. Stay tuned for the same.

Here’s what you should be looking for in a £4.5m FPL MID:

  • Expected minutes (Is he absolutely nailed on?)
  • A player of a team which you don’t mind using up for an extra spot
  • Attacking potentiality
  • Clean Sheet chances
  • Less chance of getting cards
  • Pre-season performance

Yives Bissouma (£4.5m) BHA

Best £4.5m MID in FPL for the 2021/22 fpl Season ~ Yives Bissouma

The most popular pick (13.5%) at this price tag. That’s quite understandable as he played the most minutes among £4.5m MID options last season (3,111). However, among the FPL managers this season, BHA GK pair Sanchez (£4.5m) and Steele (£4.0m) seem to be becoming a good strategy. Adding to that, after Lamptey’s injury news, now Veltman is also looking to be a good choice at a £4.5m price tag. That would conflict with my second point of the ‘looking for’ list.

Bissouma plays at CDM and naturally, players at this position have to tackle risky ones from time to time. He got 8 yellow cards (6th highest among MID) and a red card last season so that means he doesn’t really hold back while tackling. That’s no good news for us FPL managers at all. But defensively they are a strong side and with good early fixtures, he may bag some potential CS points. He loves to try from distance sometimes and last season, he had 1.22 shots per 90 mins which was the highest among all £4.5m MID options. He had a total of 42 shots last season and 35 of them were from outside the box and 7 from inside the penalty area.

He’s one of the safest £4.5m MID options this year. He’ll probably provide you occasional 2/3 points just whenever you need him from the bench.

Josh Brownhill (£4.5m) – BUR

Best £4.5m MID in FPL for the 2021/22 fpl Season ~ Josh Brownhill

Having 32 starts last season, the Burnley midfielder played 2,813 mins in total. He’s currently owned by 3.3%. He scored two goals in the preseason for BUR and he offers more potential attacking threats than most other MID options at this price tag. He can play both as an RM and CM which gives him versatility.

He played as almost a CAM at the last stages of the season and in the last friendly match for BUR, he started in the Right midfield position. He’s had 2 six-yard box shots, 11 penalty area shots, and 21 out-of-box shots last season with a total of 34. He’s had the most touches (65) in the opposition penalty area among £4.5m MID last season. This year, he’s expected to be on the set-piece duty as well which increases the attacking return chances even more.

It is very unlikely to get more than two BUR players in our drafts so it’s no bother to use him as a bench option. I believe he’ll be a regular starter and will play a big role in their midfield.

Brownhill only got 2 yellow cards last season and they are defensively decent as well to get some potential CS points.

Personally, I think he’s one of the best picks out there at this price tag and he’ll get some more attacking returns this year.

Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) – NOR

Best £4.5m MID in FPL for the 2021/22 fpl Season ~ Billy Gilmour

The Scottish 20 y/o Chelsea midfielder is loaned out to Norwich City for the whole season. As things stand, he’s very much nailed on right now in their CM position. He also had some good minutes in the preseason-friendly games after joining the new club and showed some good promise as well.

He’s one of the creative players in their team and I’m really excited to watch him play. This could be a breakthrough season in the premier league for the Scotsman. In the last friendly game against NEW, Gilmour was on their set-piece duty. If that continues, then the chance of getting assists certainly gets increased for him.

Fixture wise he does not have the best ones in the early GWs, to be honest, but a £4.5m MID option is not the one that you change frequently, so planning for longer-term would be wise.

I think all the hype around him is well justified and he can easily become one of the best options at this cheap price tag.

Lukas Rupp (£4.5m) – NOR

Best £4.5m MID in FPL for the 2021/22 fpl Season ~ Lukas Rupp

We’ve got another cheap MID option from Norwich City this year. The German midfielder is surely one to watch and has some attacking potentiality.

He played 1,267 minutes last season (15 starts out of 23) for NOR in the Championship. But this year, he started most of the preseason games which indicates he’ll start to get regular game time in the league.

In the preseason games, Rupp played alongside their young loanee Gilmour in the central midfield. Last season he managed to bag 3 assists for his team before facing an injury. He can offer a lot in the attack as he can play different roles in the team whenever needed.

He can be a viable cheap bench option for the FPL managers but I would suggest getting Gilmour instead from NOR options for now because he has a slightly higher ceiling.

Oriol Romeu (£4.5m) – SOU

Best £4.5m MID in FPL for the 2021/22 fpl Season ~ ORiol Romeu

Another £4.5m MID option who is very much nailed on the first team. Romeu plays as a defensive midfielder for the Saints. He played 1,763 minutes before facing an injury to cut his game time last season. During this period, he scored one goal and provided one assist. He had a total of 14 shots (only 3 inside the penalty area) which means he’ll return attacking points rarely. He also got 6 yellow cards last season.

FPL managers won’t mind losing a spot for SOU players so in that sense he can be a safe option for your bench who’s absolutely nailed on the team.

Gibbs-White (£4.5m) – WOL

Best £4.5m MID in FPL for the 2021/22 fpl Season ~ Gibbs White

Only selected by 0.7%, Gibbs-White from WOL can be a good option for the FPL managers. Morgan Gibbs-White played 11 games last season with Wolves where he only started 4 of them before being loaned out to Swansea City in the championship. While being there, he scored a goal and bagged an assist

But this season, he played all the preseason games for WOL where he started 5 out of 6 games. He’s a versatile player who can play as an attacking midfielder and also a winger.

With Neto and Podence out, Gibbs-White looks a viable option in the beginning. But one thing to consider, you’d probably want a nailed-on long-term player on your bench to enable this spot. However, if he becomes a regular starter in the squad, he’ll become a popular £4.5m MID in no time.

Allan (£4.5m) – EVE

Best £4.5m MID in FPL for the 2021/22 fpl Season ~ Allan

The Brazilian midfielder came to Carlo Ancelotti’s side last year hoping to make a real difference in the team. He’s a quality player undoubtedly but not the best of options for FPL. He likes to lay deep in the midfield and rarely comes forward to join the attack.

Allan’s season was curtailed through injury but when fit, he started almost every game. He played 2,051 minutes for Everton but yet to register any attacking return for them.

With the new manager Rafa Benitez in the team, I think it’s a wait-and-see how he uses Allan. He’s got fairly good fixtures in the early GWs.

Oliver Skipp (£4.5m) – TOT

Best £4.5m MID in FPL for the 2021/22 fpl Season ~ Skipp

Last year, Oliver Skipp was loaned out to Championship team Norwich where he became one of their important players in no time. He helped NOR to win the title and promote themselves to Premier League by playing 45 games (44 starts) for them. He also scored a goal and provided an assist with 8 shots and 1 shot on target.

20 y/o defensive-minded English midfielder started 4/5 preseason games under the new Spurs manager Nuno. It’s very early to say if he’ll be a regular one in the teamsheet but surely he’s one to watch out for.

Nevertheless, I don’t think it’s very wise to take one of Spur’s players to be your bench option. They’ve got some serious assets like Kane(?), Son, Dele, Reguilon, and Doherty. Everyone knows under Nuno, how good the wingbacks perform. So later in the season, I wouldn’t be much surprised to see people doubling up or even tripling up on them especially after Cristian Romero coming to strengthen their defense and the rumors of Lautaro Martinez coming.
